      @@sarahjaynescott545 i doubt they think that far. Their eyes focus on the profit and making sure the business survives. Which is not unreasonable to do. And on the flip side, many smaller businesses would go under or could not afford to pay employees livable wages of ~24 dollars an hour. A lot of this is due to how the economy works rather than the small businesses.

    I remember a janitor job I had. I was paid to be there for 4 hours. My first day, I finished my work in 30 minutes. I told my boss, and I was rewarded with doing everyone else's job for the rest of the 3.5 hours. From then on you couldn't find me working. I do the same thing at mine. I work as a contract house cleaner and one of the companies I work with pays by the hour. For each contract, they list how long they expect the job to take. I'm pretty efficient, so I always finish early, sometimes with nearly an hour to spare. If the customer is home, I'll work slower or pretend to clean things that don't need it until time runs out (or I'll drive home and clock out when I park). If the customer's not home, I just wait the clock out and call it a day. Every house I clean looks fantastic, and I intend to collect my full pay for each one. I shouldn't be penalized for being better at my job than they anticpated

      Yep. If you finish your work, you get rewarded with more work. You have to do the work of people who show up late and spend their time socializing and making friends, including with the boss. Then you’re seen as the stressed-out b*tch, and they’re popular and loved by everyone. Slow down. When you finish your work, keep busy cleaning up and organizing your area. Better yet, intersperse these activities so it’s not obvious.

      #1. Your company is not 100% responsible for the person's livelihood, so they're less likely to want a raise or promotion.

I am in Silicon Valley and for anyone reading this - just know that it is NOT a meritocacy - and the only freedom you have is to change jobs; but if you can work TWO jobs, then go for it. I'm a Boomer (62 this year, will be retiring early), have been working in IT for 37 years and have held numerous positions throughout my career all while rising up thru the ranks (full stack developer, lead, architect, mid manager, senior manager, director, VP). The only way I survived & thrived in this industry was to 1) change companies every 2-4 years to get the best salary increases / knowledge and 2) always have other active external connections to that next opportunity so you can jump fast if needed/wanted.
    Based upon today's job market & corporate environment the idea of having 2 jobs at once accomplishes all of my previous points simultaneously. I love the fact that this generation is putting companies on blast, effecting change and taking back control.

    Being against employees with multiple jobs is about control. Employees are supposed to be dependent on the employer and fear the loss of their livelihood. Employees with multiple jobs make employers uneasy, thinking there's less control and ownership over the employee's livelihood, which they think impacts productivity, which is a fallacy. Employees with multiple jobs don't have to let their employers exert unnecessary control over their lives, because they can more readily quit. They choose when to be the pilot and when to be the passenger.

Once I get to a certain level in a year and have my CE maintenance credits plan worked out I'll explore this. Company pays minimal wages, takes years to issue a 3 percent raise. I'll be overjoyed to say goodbye to this job forever. The hilarious thing is that they've become extremely dependent on me, my job duties have quadrupled, and I have no idea who they'd find to replace me at the wages I'm paid, but can't manage a raise. Eh...disagree to a point. If this is a call center, WFH job, and they expect you to sit by the phone with their customer service app open on your computer for 8-hours each day, then I better get paid for 8 hours even if I get only 1 phone call. That's opportunity cost.
      If I'm not the only call rep, and I can get another call center job simultaneously to the point that there's a very low chance I'll have two calls at the exact same time, why not double-dip?
      The point is that relatively few jobs are really in a position to pay entirely based on productivity numbers. R&D work can take weeks or months (or longer) without producing a commercially useful output. Edison would have loved not to pay the engineers and scientists who developed the 800 ways NOT to build a lightbulb.

      Crazy when even the military is a better employer than half the private sector. Better pay, better benefits, somehow better flexibility, childcare assistance...come on, Corporate America, you can be better.

    This was the push I needed! I work in Cyber Security right now, but I want to learn code so bad! So I think I’ll go ahead and pick up gigs freelancing now to build my portfolio to move into a job as an SRE. Self-taught programmers aren’t always seen in the best light so I think that’ll be my way to get a foot in the door. Thanks :)

      I'm self taught as well and worked 3 months for free to hone my coding skills. Best decision I've ever made. Now 5 years later, there's always jobs everywhere, even tho I'm past the point of working for other people, since becoming a contractor and starting my own business.

      I am in Infosec and have an Infosec degree coding is not the same as software engineering there is also no such thing as a self thought programmer. You might want to hold on a bit. I do EHR for hospitals Cyber Security is not the same as engineering good secure code. I think you are too far away from that goal.

      @@elir.torres8642 ??? I don’t have any goals of continuing in Cyber Security. If I’m being honest, I hate it. I know much more than Cyber Security principals, I have a CCNA (working on CCNP), a couple AWS Certs, I can functionally use Terraform, Ansible, Grafana, Docker, and K8, on top of the regular eCPPT and CySA+ rigamarole that a lot of Cyber Security folk have, as well as, like you, a degree. Not that any of that really matters in the face of experience. I want to do SRE and/or Cloud Deployment like I said earlier. Sorry if I confused you with what I said. I really do just want to do Cloud Dev. If they want me to make code more secure then they’ll teach me, otherwise I fully intend to leave Cyber Security behind. I’d rather have the security of what I do be a part of the deployment life cycle, so it’ll be PART of my job, instead of EXCLUSIVELY my job as it is now. I already know how to use and read languages that all cyber security folk do (at least those at big companies) Powershell, Bash, and Python, but I want to do more than scripting but not be a full blown software engineer. And I’m not far away from that at all, I’m truly just one good GitHub project away. I think the part of “there being no self-taught programmer” is semantics, by that same logic there’s no self taught anything. There certainly aren’t self taught Cyber Security professionals. Everyone uses W3, stack overflow, as well as maybe a plain ol teacher, all in tandem. I understand that, but self taught in my parlance is more in reference to an HR system that doesn’t see all applicants in the same light.

    this is why getting paid by the hour is kind of a bad thing.
    You want to prolong the hours (without necessarily doing more work), while the client/company wants to decrease the hours (while getting more work out of you).
    Really is built like a lose-lose situation.

    • @Lawrence330
      @Lawrence330 2 роки тому

      For many fields, yes. For others, hourly is a necessity. Any job where you're on call or standby, for instance, should be hourly. I want to be paid for every hour that I'm "available" to drop everything and rush to solve "your problem (TM)."
      Jobs that I might call "production" but that don't have a productivity number, like fast food or cashiers, or even assembly line workers should also be paid hourly. If a jam occurs upstream of the assembly line and you're standing around waiting for repairs to be made so you can get back to work, that shouldn't come out of your paycheck. Ditto for slow days at stores or restaurants, where you're onsite just in case a customer comes in. "Sorry, you didn't make any sales today, no pay for you." Unacceptable, I spent my whole day here, it's marketing dept's fault that no one wants to shop here. That's opportunity cost, and employers should have to pay it if they need availability in blocks of time rather than "per deliverable."

    • @GameFuMaster
      @GameFuMaster 2 роки тому

      @@Lawrence330 true, being on "standby" should be hourly.
      fast food/cashier can have productivity numbers, but it's probably up and down throughout the day. So an averaged amount, which comes to an hourly wage, would probably be most suitable.
      But of course, it's still best for the worker to negotiate for hourly or KPM

    They had the same contract for stealing all ideas from people who worked there (my coworkers who had ideas told me this). Luckily for me, I was a contractor and didn’t have to sign that contract due to an oversight.

    This isn't even a new thing. In Britain, there's a chain of supermarkets called "Iceland". It was started in the 70s by two guys who'd been working as "junior managers" for a chain of department stores for several months, and they'd realised that there were no promotion prospects and "junior manager" was just a fancy title for a skivvy. So they came up with the idea of setting up a supermarket that specialised in fresh veg and frozen food - a simple business where if they rented a shop and got the right staff in, it would practically run itself. They carried on working as "junior managers" for the regular pay packet, and checked on the supermarket they'd started round the corner on their lunch breaks and after work - an arrangement that worked just fine. After a couple of months, their bosses at the department store found out somehow that they were running this supermarket on the side, and sacked them. So then they started running the supermarket full time, established a chain of them, and became millionaires.

    I worked for a small publishing company doing Photoshop and InDesign work, and maintaining the company website on the side. I was tasked with updating all of over 1000 html files with new company information. The boss told me "it's going to take you a long time but it's super important." I tried to tell him about text editors with global search-and-replace and he said "don't do anything fancy. the website is very important so it has to be done the right way." I told him I could probably finish it by the end of the week.
    Fifteen minutes later, I'd updated all of the files. I left one document open on my computer for three days and screwed off the whole time; then proudly announced I was finished a whole day ahead of schedule.

    I knew my old job was pretty dependent on me. I never saw anyone get fired (okay one person) but I watched a lot of people quit. I stayed because it gave me some benefits I needed, despite crap pay and a toxic work environment. I understood that and was okay with it. The second I realized how unlikely it was for them to fire me, I became quite vocal about my second job. I made it clear that I was only supplementing with the second job to fill in the pay gap from the first. I framed it in a way that still prioritized the first job, and I think I even believed that myself for a time. Normally I would just keep this to myself, especially when I suspected nothing would happen with the information. I had a part time job I could upgrade to full time at the snap of my fingers, and I would find a way to make up for the benefits, so voicing my thoughts and concerns wasn't a risky gamble. I wanted them to see the instability they were creating with all their employees, even if they did nothing about it.
    The tale ends with me leaving the moment my benefits were no longer useful to me, and the bosses acting super surprised about this. I'm sure they still bad talk me like I "took advantage" of benefits I earned. Having employees with one foot out the door isn't a a sign of disloyalty, it's a sign of fucking dignity and forethought.

    The problem e.g. in Central Europe is that you can be self-employed and then well... you just have a contract. And you can be "fully employed" by 1 company and you can't work "fully" for 2 companies. You can take up e.g. a 5-10-hour additional job but it's still a different kind of a contract (the second company then knows about the first one). It's pretty complex how it is here.

    First job: Web Dev/Graphic Artist - 2.8 years so far. Told them when I started that they can expect me to work at least two jobs at once
    Second Job: Run a Online Store for Collectibles, Funko Pop’s and Game related Items.
    Third Job: Uber Eats when I need extra spending money. Bought a $800 dollar shit box to deliver in.
    I’m gonna get my money one way or another.
    So it’s up to them if they want to keep paying me to build their stuff or they can spend another year and a half trying to find someone who does front-end and back-end and who is a talented graphic artist for their budget. Either way I’m gonna get that loot.

    If you do a great job you get more responsibilities. If you do an ok job you won't get much work. Both scenarios keep you employed but only one leaves your sanity intact. After overachieving for a year at my job I needed a year off to get myself into a stable state of mind. I stayed home for a year and slept, ate and got fat. And that's what I needed after burning out.
