Just want to say this since I've gotten a lot of these comments. The people on this list ARE Samoan, they potentially could also be Tongan or Hawaiian, but if they're on this list, they (according to the research I did on them) have Samoan ancestry. I understand the difference between the different Polynesian states, but that's what makes this cultural phenomenon so interesting is that it's specifically those of Samoan Ancestry that wind up in the NFL. I appreciate everyone's concern, but I promise I am not labeling every Polynesian person as Samoan.

For all of us Polynesian kids in America, I think football was our first love from the moment we knew how to run. My grandmother and her family came here from Fiji, but the love for the sport remains the same. Growing up, telling other kids that your family came from a tropical island always came with mixed reactions, but I am grateful that there were guys like Troy Polamalu, Haloti Ngata, and Junior Seau for me to look up to Ou te alofa i lou aiga to all my Samoans

I had a Samoan guy in batt with me. I watched him miss his brake coming out of a Chinook aussie style (face first) and hit the ground chest first at full speed from like 70 ft up. Got up and brushes the dust off like nothing happened.
I went to high school in Hawaii with a lot of Samoans and generally speaking they're huge. Not to mention usually athletic for their size. Eg. a 6'1" 300 lbs Samoan will usually be able to move better than someone of the same size of another race. It's no wonder they dominate physical sports like football and rugby.
I was playing a pickup basketball game in Ewa about a year ago, and a 6-1, 275 lb dude there was easily the most athletic person I have ever met. He moved like a damn cat.

I was born and raised in California and was a 49er fan forever. Troy Polomalu is one my favorite players of all time. I didn't like the steelers and I watched more Steeler games just to watch that man absolutely control the defense.
Samoan players are fundamentally sound, mainly have great instincts in the game, are students of the game, tough as nails, but importantly very teachable players who have great leadership skills and team players. Very efficient and effective in how they see and play the game.

Bro, i just watched that Burrow video you made. That season we had a DT transfer (from Texas Tech I think) named Brayden Fehoko. Prior to every home game, during the team’s ceremonial walk down the hill into Tiger stadium, Braden would always find his dad and brother in the sea of Tiger fans lining both sides of the street... Then, face to face, the three Fehokos would perform their Hakka(that traditional war “dance”) Gave me and many others chills. That was just part of the magic of that season.
Pittsburgher here. A little personal story. My cousin, fresh out of college, was working at a local Pittsburgh hospital. Troy’s wife was at the hospital and just gave birth. My cousin walked into the room to do something routine and łooked up and saw Troy Polanski sitting there and her jaw dropped to the floor. I also recall playing the Pats that season, Manu tackling Mosi, and the play by play guy saying that he was just waiting for the chance to say "Tuiasosopo tackles Tatupu". Later on, Mosi's boy Lofa was starting at MLB for the Seahawks while Manu's oldest son Marques was playing QB at the UW. The offense the Huskies were running at that time was a mix of pass-heavy pro set and old fashioned option run game. One game against, I think San Jose State but have to check that, Marques ran for 200 yards and threw for 300.

I remember meeting Pisa Tinoisamoa in 2006 when I was a young teen. Super nice guy, and a badass on the field. I wish he stayed healthy in his career; he was a solid, solid linebacker for us when he was. Currently, I'd say my favorite player on the Rams (my team cheering for) is Makea "Puka" Nacua; he plays wide receiver the way I played offense in pickup games with my friends. It's amazing how Pacific Islanders as a whole have influenced the game of football, the game I grew up watching, and there really has to be a spotlight on them as well. Thank you for showing that spotlight - coming from a Caucasian with all sorts of European descent; it was a good discussion, and it made me learn a ton.
Samoans stamp in sports and combat sports is absolutely incredible when you take into account that there are less than 1m of them in existence across the world. It’s a true testament to their amazing genetics and heritage. Just imagine a population of them equivalent to America? They would rule combat sports AND contact sports lol.
There was a time when the west coast junior colleges had lines that were almost all Samoan. I would see them around my town and what stood out was their size and that they didn't wear shoes very often.

Our first practice they ran the Oklahoma drill & I was scared cause up until that point in my life, the only physical altercations I've been in was with my mom & her slipper 😂 the drill started & I cracked the other kid into the dirt & everything else was history. Growing up in Hawaii, listened to Hawaii high school games on the radio. Mosi's school was part of Oahu's private high school division aka ILH. Whenever his team(Punahou) all you heard was..."Tatupu w/the ball, up the middle for 5yds." Or.."Tatupu catches the pass for 12yds...1st down, Punahou!" Mosi Tatupu was a standout speacial teamer, his Pro Bowl nod was due to his play on coverage units. He was widely considered one of the best special teams players in the AFC, during the 80's. Even had his own fan club in New England: "Mosi's Mooses" 😏 Awesome video, Coach Parks [cough, ahem] Punts!

Having lived several years in Hawaii I can say that Samoan dominance is not an anomaly. I remember getting on the bus and seeing about 6 or 7 Giants, 350 lb Plus Men (and women) looking at formidable and menacing is any NFL player. Yet they like all the other Hawaiians I met were the most pleasant people that I've ever been associated yet they like all the other Hawaiians I met were the most pleasant people that I've ever lived amongst. Well they may be a bit hostile to tourists and outsiders once you live in their community with them they will literally give you the shirt off their back..,. This is no expression they are the most generous and family based people imaginable.

I grew up in Hawaii and went to high school with a lot of Samoans as well. Mostly good people even though they can often be intimidating. Funny too, they like to joke around. But I can also say a lot of them have kind of a short fuse when it comes to conflict, I've seen it myself.
Between Lolotai in 1945 & Tautolo in 1976, there was Bob Apisa to Packers/1968. Apisa instead found fame/notoreity in Hollywood. Nicholson followed Apisa, also from Michigan State, to NFL/1974
Mosi Tatupu was a BEAST and probably the first Polynesian player I remember. I remember him mostly as a punt returner but he had a good career overall.

Troy polomolou played in our high school league. First 2 plays of the game were Troy touchdowns . First was kick return, took it to the house. Second play they kicked it off. He ran like 4 people over to get to the guy with the ball whome which he distroyed, caused a fumble. Then he picked it up and ran it to another touchdown.

For all of us Polynesian kids in America, I think football was our first love from the moment we knew how to run. My grandmother and her family came here from Fiji, but the love for the sport remains the same.
Growing up, telling other kids that your family came from a tropical island always came with mixed reactions, but I am grateful that there were guys like Troy Polamalu, Haloti Ngata, and Junior Seau for me to look up to

I went to high school in Hawaii with a lot of Samoans and generally speaking they're huge. Not to mention usually athletic for their size. Eg. a 6'1" 300 lbs Samoan will usually be able to move better than someone of the same size of another race. It's no wonder they dominate physical sports like football and rugby.

Bro, i just watched that Burrow video you made. That season we had a DT transfer (from Texas Tech I think) named Brayden Fehoko. Prior to every home game, during the team’s ceremonial walk down the hill into Tiger stadium, Braden would always find his dad and brother in the sea of Tiger fans lining both sides of the street...
Then, face to face, the three Fehokos would perform their Hakka(that traditional war “dance”) Gave me and many others chills. That was just part of the magic of that season.

Pittsburgher here. A little personal story. My cousin, fresh out of college, was working at a local Pittsburgh hospital. Troy’s wife was at the hospital and just gave birth. My cousin walked into the room to do something routine and łooked up and saw Troy Polanski sitting there and her jaw dropped to the floor. I'm a Seattle boy, I remember when the Seahawks drafted Manu Tuiasosopo out of UCLA. I also recall playing the Pats that season, Manu tackling Mosi, and the play by play guy saying that he was just waiting for the chance to say "Tuiasosopo tackles Tatupu". Later on, Mosi's boy Lofa was starting at MLB for the Seahawks while Manu's oldest son Marques was playing QB at the UW.
The offense the Huskies were running at that time was a mix of pass-heavy pro set and old fashioned option run game. One game against, I think San Jose State but have to check that, Marques ran for 200 yards and threw for 300.
Marques was also a backup qb for the raiders.
That game was against Stanford in 1999. Stanford was the Pac 10 champ that year. He became the first player ever to do that.

I remember meeting Pisa Tinoisamoa in 2006 when I was a young teen. Super nice guy, and a badass on the field. I wish he stayed healthy in his career; he was a solid, solid linebacker for us when he was. Currently, I'd say my favorite player on the Rams (my team cheering for) is Makea "Puka" Nacua; he plays wide receiver the way I played offense in pickup games with my friends.
It's amazing how Pacific Islanders as a whole have influenced the game of football, the game I grew up watching, and there really has to be a spotlight on them as well. Thank you for showing that spotlight - coming from a Caucasian with all sorts of European descent; it was a good discussion, and it made me learn a ton.
Samoans stamp in sports and combat sports is absolutely incredible when you take into account that there are less than 1m of them in existence across the world. Whenever his team(Punahou) all you heard was..."Tatupu w/the ball, up the middle for 5yds." Or.."Tatupu catches the pass for 12yds...1st down, Punahou!" Mosi was a veritable Beast in HI h.s. football. You don't get a NCAAF Award named for you by just being "ordinary"

Most schools around the globe teach their students better Geography (I had Geography right until highschool in foreign schools). The only Americans I know who have a grasp of Geography are higher learning and military. Having lived several years in Hawaii I can say that Samoan dominance is not an anomaly. I remember getting on the bus and seeing about 6 or 7 Giants, 350 lb Plus Men (and women) looking at formidable and menacing is any NFL player. Yet they like all the other Hawaiians I met were the most pleasant people that I've ever been associated yet they like all the other Hawaiians I met were the most pleasant people that I've ever lived amongst.
Well they may be a bit hostile to tourists and outsiders once you live in their community with them they will literally give you the shirt off their back..,. This is no expression they are the most generous and family based people imaginable.
This hit home I’ve never met people that fit gentlemanly perfectly in between whistles fold you in half like a lawn chair after the whistle unfold you tell you try harder like I just gave you my all 😂

I grew up in Hawaii and went to high school with a lot of Samoans as well. Mostly good people even though they can often be intimidating. Funny too, they like to joke around. But I can also say a lot of them have kind of a short fuse when it comes to conflict, I've seen it myself.

Mosi Tatupu was a BEAST and probably the first Polynesian player I remember. I remember him mostly as a punt returner but he had a good career overall.

Troy polomolou played in our high school league. First 2 plays of the game were Troy touchdowns . First was kick return, took it to the house. Second play they kicked it off. He ran like 4 people over to get to the guy with the ball whome which he distroyed, caused a fumble. Then he picked it up and ran it to another touchdown.
