  • An arrangement of the Jacques Brel tune, with an English reinterpretation.
The other night I came home with the old chestnut Seasons in the Sun cycling in my head, for no good reason. Annoyed, I googled it. As It turns out, it was a 10 million seller, and widely thought to be one of the sappiest hit singles ever, unsurprisingly. On further inspection, it turned out to be an English adaptation of a Jacques Brel tune (a very trendy thing to do, in those days). After enjoying the subtle Gallic wit and conflicted, sophisticated pathos of the original, which had been flattened by the Rod Mckuen/Terry Jacks version that stormed the charts in the early 70s, I decided it deserved another shot. So here you go. I feel that this is far more true to Brels' original. I may have embroidered it with some of my own experience, I'll let you compare it with the original… you figure it out.
Goodbye, friend, I loved you well
Goodbye, friend, I loved you well, you know
we have drunk of the same booze
and sung away our common blues
and pulled each other through this world
Goodbye, friend, I’m going to die
I’d leave you everything I have, you know
but lets admit now that it’s true
while i was gone, you had her too
I know you’ll take care of my girl
lets all sing, lets all dance
lets all laugh like crazy asses
everybody raise your glasses as they put me in the ground
Goodbye, priest, I loved you well
rather: liked you well enough, you know
the ships we sailed were far apart
your star was jesus, mine was art
but we followed the same light
Goodbye, priest, I’m going to die
It sucks to die while you’re still young, you know
But you’ve eased the burden on my heart 'cause you're ancient and you're smart
I know that you’ll console my wife
    (Chorus)
    Goodbye, jack, you pompous ass
I had you figured out quite well, you know
It is killing me to die
While you are living oh so fine
your healthy, strong and boring life
That’s right, jack, I’m going to die!
It’s hard to die while it’s still Spring, you know.
But I take the flowers with me as I go
‘cause you foot the bill and pay the toll - thats how you get to fuck my wife
    (Chorus)
lets all sing, lets all dance
lets forgive and hug each other
we’re all sisters and all brothers when they put us in the ground
lets all sing, lets all dance
lets all drink and shag each other
we can all be friends and lovers til they put us in the ground
Goodbye, wife, I loved you well
Goodbye, my wife, I loved you well, you know
But I’m catching the next train
    I don’t think i need explain
    it’s something i just can’t control
    it’s a shame I’ve got to die
now that my eyes are finally open wide
i’m sorry they were often closed
I’m so grateful you were mine
try to forgive my wretched soul
    (Chorus)
lets all sing, lets all dance
lets all laugh like crazy asses
everybody raise your glasses as they put me in the ground

As Belgian, I love jacques Brel very much, he is my favorite singer. I think you made a very good job. This is a beautiful song and you keep it beautiful.

Tristan,You are so animated and engaging in this video. The song suits really suits your style, but you can sing anything anyways! If I ever were to expire, I would want this version from you played at my celebration of Life...

I‘m Dutch and Jacques Brel was quite big over here. Probably because he was Belgian and Belgium is like our country’s little sister.
But when I found out my favorite Jacques Brel song had an English translation (seasons in the sun) I was really disappointed with the way they totally missed the mark.
Your translation has much more of the same raw energy the original had and it’s much better if you ask me.
    Well done.
