    Great job with your efforts. I would have painted all the cabinets a deep rich grey that would compliment the blue/grey counter top and not a whitewash.

    Do you plan to use a paintable caulk?

    I love neutrals, but just cannot do Grey's anymore unless they have a tan or brown undertone that doesn't show it as a Grey color. I'd rather have white, but with. Messy husband and 2 dogs, we are going with seal skin on the lower cabinets and maybe something similar to Anew Grey, but not Grey on the uppers. Will be more tan brown Grey. It goes great with the seal skin by Sherwin Williams. Great look, but we can't do this on ours. It has drawers and cabinets doors on both long sides and one end is against the wall and the other end we used old barn wood ripped to size that we needed to cover up those old orange golden oak cabinets. Glad to see them gone gone gone in color. Now to get rid of our floors, but that will be in 2024. Sick of the golden oak floors too,so going with sonething completely different then. Looks great, you did a great job!

      @@6thGearHouse yeah it is. We hired out for someone to build drawer and cabinet door fronts. We hired them to build the corner cabinet and drawers area Ina naked space. It's awesome. Then they also took our nook and but cabinets below the windows with granite coubtertops on top and it's our low seating breakfast and lunch bar. We eat in the dining area in the sunroom for our supper/ dinners. Qe vreally cool saddle brown faux leather kind of modern but rustic chairs for the breakfast bar where for now we have the coffee area stationed. When the sunroom is finished with bar with a sink, we will have a 4 chair bar and eat breakfast out there. We will also put our tall round table with 4 bar stools at the windows to nature watch while we eat. It's a large sunroom. We still have so much to do, but costs of lumber and supplies is just too high this year, so most of that will happen next year. We need to finish painting the exterior, the windows, put in a privacy fence on one side of our yard, from the snooping neighbors. We need to plant flower bulbs we gave each other for our Anniversary and shade loving astilbe plants. E have a bird feeder to install on a wooden post me need to buy and bury in the ground also.. We love working in our yard. We are painting walls in the family room, kitchen, nook and master bedroom this weekend. Touch up walls in master bath, laundry room, certain areas. Crown molding to install on the built in fir the family room. Yes alotbof work, but it's gratifying to know you did it yourself, it's so much less expensive too! Keep up the great work!!! You are amazing and improving all the time!!!

    prime with shellac primer don't have sand until finish coat

  • @agrocerygeek1323

    I applaud anyone's effort to do home improvement but I think this finish looks very homemade; it almost looks like primer rather than the final finish. I would have gone with a solid grey (or white) paint, and definitely used wood putty to fill all seams and sand before painting. The overlay wood pieces would have a more custom look if their vertical edges were beveled with a router. I would swap out your metal outlet cover for a wood outlet cover that is paintable/stainable to blend better.

    • @6thGearHouse

      Yes I did the back of the cabinet doors first, then the fronts. That way if I got any scratches on the back while setting them down to finish the front, it wouldn't be a big deal.

    Very nice. The knobs bite!!! Please reconsider. Those are "contractor grade". For all that work and effect the knobs/pulls should be more contemporary and/or substantial... Why not fill, sand and paint over the nail holes for a more professional/finished look? Just sayin...

      My wife wanted the "farmhouse" look. Between her changing her mind and the kids always kicking when sitting at the stools, I'll probably end up refinishing it again in a few years. At some point I'll refinish all the other cabinet as well and maybe then everything will match. This was just phase 1.

    Caulk, caulk, caulk for a seamless look, also at base of cabinet all around. I would have painted it a different color; I am not sure what color your walls are, but greens work very well in kitchens, like a pale olive green. Different knobs would have taken it up a notch. We are going to be painting our kitchen cabinets Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore after the weather cools off in FL and we got beautiful square Craftsman style knobs to upgrade from the plain round brushed nickel knobs. I feel that hand-done washes on walls or cabinets look very handmade and not classy. And a note to everyone: GRAY of any kind is now OUT. It has been wayyyy overdone for at least ten years. It is depressing and clinical in feel. STOP USING IT!! Go with brown tones like taupe or beige or cream. Lots of recently built homes still have gray walls or cabinets and it is SO annoying to go into an otherwise lovely home and see all that gray. First thing we'd have to do is paint the entire interior of the house. And those rectangular tile floors in streaky dark brown-gray that are supposed to look like wood are super UGLY! Use actual wood that looks like wood or tile that looks like tile. Be true to your materials.

    • @6thGearHouse
      @6thGearHouse  9 місяців тому +1

      I didn't caulk because my wife wanted the old farmhouse look. Once this gets old and she's bored w/ it, I'll be refinishing it again. Sorry you don't like the brown laminate wood floor, it's what we could afford after buying the house. I agree real wood is nice, but expensive. I think the floors look good enough. We painted the walls grey in 2017 when we moved in, but aren't trendy enough (and don't have the time) to repaint the house every few years as styles change. Notice how the rest of the cabinets in the kitchen are still light oak from 20 years ago... They'll probably stay that way until we win the lottery and buy new cabinets ;)

    • @virginiasoskin9082
      @virginiasoskin9082 9 місяців тому

      @@6thGearHouse Yeah, our interior was painted pale yellow about 7 years ago and we are not repainting either. Not for a good while. I was just saying that gray is out for those who might be thinking about painting something gray in the house. Instead, colors based on brown are coming back like beige, taupe, etc. Your island sure got a facelift. Good for you!
