      All of mine died first time I tried. Second time I put clear plastic (like ziplock) bags over the whole plant. All three of them survived and are doing well. No rooting hormone.

      I do this exact method for all propagation of succulents and even my palm trees. Works like a charm. I have it in my shed where it reaches anywhere between 60 degrees and 80 degrees.
      The plants love humidity but be careful as too much can cause the main stem to break easily.
      As soon as it develops roots plant it in a small pot

      Decades ago there was no rooting hormones and no store-bought potting soil.
      Hundreds of years ago, people were planting orchards, but very few knew about grafting and air-layering.
      Mine came from seeds, but I don't care about improved varieties. Seeds produce mixed results, some bad, some good. One of my tangerine trees has small fruit that has 15 to 30 seeds and little edible flesh.
      If it works 10% of the time, it's probably worth it to some people. I have a couple of wonderful trees, but one got freeze damaged and is struggling - 10% success is worth the effort.

    Hi can I ask about lemon tree cuttings. I did a air layer on one of the lemon branches and it was looking good to start with but started going backwards and very yellow in then brown. It had a few roots on it so I cut it and then cut all the bad yellow leaves and put some rooting hormone on the roots and put it in a container that is so far working for my either cuttings. Will it survive?

  • @mppp1877
    @mppp1877 4 роки тому +9

    IMPORTANT QUESTION: Once you plant the cutting, what degree of sunlight or light does it need? You did not mention the conditions. should it be cold, hot, medium and bright, dark, partial light and does it require fake light, real sunlight. We need details please.

    • @kqdwills
      @kqdwills 2 роки тому +2

      This is not a good video clips on propagating lemon trees. Your question is legit. Dipping the cutting part in the rooting powder is recommended, since it would speed up the process of rooting, therefore limiting the failure rate. Also keep them in the shade in moisture condition. That means this method would have high successful rate in southern states like TX, FL, GA, while low rate in AZ, NM, the desert... avoid direct sunlight, wind, also important.

    I took a cutting from my lemon tree before watching this video, it hasn’t died and has about 2 leaves on the stem but….. it’s started to flower! What do I do? Just go with it or remove the flowers? Clearly I don’t want fruit on it, it’s only about 6 inches long.

    • @CyberGardens
      @CyberGardens  3 роки тому +3

      remove the flower buds to save energy for the roots to grow, we want leaves and roots to form. be patient, when the second and third set of leaves appear its happy days.
      thanks for watching, good luck 🌱

    Which is better method to propagate citrus plants? Cutting or Air Layering?

    • @shinigami2693
      @shinigami2693 2 роки тому +2

      Air layering: most citrus can be propagated this way. Some citrus like pomelo have low success rate with cuttings although it is a quicker method ( based on experience: citrus cuttings root at the 2nd to 4rth week whilst airlayering citrus roots at the first 1 to 1 1/2 months ). Keep in mind that lemons have the highest success rate amongst the citruses when it comes to cuttings.

Usually one is afraid of the resources being taken, but here the support gets it going then you split it before the relationship turns sour... keke I need lemon trees so badly they're banned from sale here !!!

    Thanks , its first time I've seen propagation lemon by cutting. So could you please tell me if this method can replaced by grafting? Or if new lemon is 100% like the main lemon tree?

    • @cosmicallyspeaking871
      @cosmicallyspeaking871 5 років тому +2

      Yes, you can get the exact genetic replica of the original plant by grafting, air layering or in the case of citrus, by planting cuttings as well. I usually plant about 50 cuttings, out of which I get 10 good plants, sometimes less or more. And the taste of the fruits is the same because the branch the plant grew out of was part of the same larger tree.

    • @cosmicallyspeaking871
      @cosmicallyspeaking871 4 роки тому +3

      @@xo7454 ~ Rooting depends on your location, geography, soil, weather, humidity, heat or the strength of the sunlight, the maturity of the cuttings you choose, the tree you choose (to get the cuttings from) & very many other factors. I live in the southern part of Bharat (India) where we have tropical, hot & humid weather & it rains a lot, which naturally facilitates early rooting of any cuttings (citrus, guava, pomegranate, flowering plants etc). Typically, for me, it takes about anywhere from a month to 3 months to get some solid roots. I try not to rush things. Once, I have the cuttings with good roots, I transfer them to pots with new soil & organic manure like cow dung. I keep them growing that way for another few months, depending on the condition of the cuttings, before I transfer them, plant them on to the soil on the ground. Again, there are not hard rules on this. You really have to experiment & monitor them. For me, this is loads of fun, so I wouldn't mind doing it. Of course, I have had very many failures (nature is NEVER in our control = In fact, we are part of nature), but you work at it over & over again until you're successful. So why not try this yourself & have fun? :)

    • @CyberGardens

      great question. i dont know the exact answer. when i transplant it fruits, so it seems to have the original age of the mother plant in sapling form.
      it takes a year to get a good root ball and then another year or two for small fruit to appear.. but im not sure if its due to the small pot and root shock.
