This video came out at just the right time for me. At 55 I have decided I want to collect Barbie as I couldn't as a kid. I remember when I was 9 my Dad let me buy a toy and I picked out the 1977 Super Star Barbie( I just l found out this what she was called). He tried to talk me out of it , but I got it. I remember the shame he felt in buying that for me and it caused me to give it to a little girl I was friends with. So I have decided to find me a Super Star Barbie to start my collection. Thank you for the info and this video!

As a doll collector myself I find most collectors fall into certain categories. For example I find that people who collect mostly THRIFTED dolls are usually attracted to the artistic and creative side of doll collecting. Restoring the dolls has a calming effect and releaves anxiety. People that collect mostly VINTAGE, especially dolls from their childhood, are usually seeking the security and comfort of a simpler happier time in their life. Those who collect to COMPLETION, who need to have every doll of every series ....are usually resellers, in it for financial and monetary reasons, than actual love of the dolls. And then you have those people who collect in EXCESS. Who just buy and buy, and buy, until their whole house is filled. These people are usually doing it out of loneliness. The huge excess acts almost like a filler of the empty emotional space around them. And of course, these categories can overlap. I myself, collect new dolls, vintage dolls, and do some thrifting. Whatever you collect, as long as it comforts you or fills you with happiness, that's all that matters.🧡 Great topic Arjan!

Not sure your assessment is true in all cases, like you said there’s overlap. Or different reasons, too. But OOF don’t come at me with the loneliness bit…that’s me and I don’t like it 🤣 my house is not full to the brim with dolls, however. Not yet, anyway… 🧐

I can agree with this! I started with collecting 1980s toys from my childhood and of course had to have some Barbies! Really got into them and now I love (some) modern dolls too. I find restoring thrifted dolls or even restyling newer dolls extremely therapeutic.

Some interesting points. I know I like to be kind to the thrifted ones through giving them a loving home and of course I love thrifted bags of clothes. I have grabbed the vintage one I remembered the most from childhood and am having a fun time feeling safe but also being creative with purchased outfits I’m building.

Hi, Arjen- I love to collect Barbie dolls, but I always limit myself to only 100 (for many reasons). Storing the dolls, cleaning the dust from the dolls hair, and keeping the dolls looking clean and new is very important to me. I have been collecting 40+ years. I also like to build my own Barbie houses, but I limit myself to only 15 houses due to storage in my "Barbie room". I enjoy watching your show and My Froggy Stuff. "Playing" with my Barbies and Kens by dressing them and building them a new house is very comforting to me. I have friends who collect Barbies. We are all in the 70 year old age group. We are happy women who enjoy our Barbies. I enjoy all your videos, my friend. Be blessed.

I chose to resume a small, limited collection of dolls because I am alone and disabled and wanted to have some beauty to add to my environment. I decided to be discriminating. It’s difficult to do but makes me feel more in control of the collection. Yes, my world is not safe and is often chaotic because of my health issues. When I sit down with a doll to restyle her/his hair or change the clothing, I feel useful and at peace. I can see how your dolls enhance your life in a positive way. You choose what makes you feel pleased and don’t just add a doll without consideration. This was a wonderful and informative video. Thank you for being so open and honest with us. So pleased to be a part of the doll collecting community with you! 👍🏻💖🌹💖👍🏻

You make some really good observations and identify some great pointers! I was a raging alcoholic for over a decade. I started collecting after I quit drinking, It really helped feel the void left without booze. It brought me a lot of comfort, my first time opening a doll from my childhood that I bought of Ebay I got the most joyous nostagic feeling. I do try not to let my collecting get out of control (addictive personality) but it is hard when there is so many beautiful dolls out there.

Hello from Connecticut, USA I am 53 years old and recently have begun recollecting The Barbies I played with and cherished as a lil kid. The time period that I played and hung out with Barbie and all her pals was from the late 70s through the early 80s. I have a particular fondness for the superstar era 💖. The only rule I have for recollecting as an adult is that they MUST be out of the box only!!!!! I want to get my hands on them and really experience the joy of them to the fullest. In the 90s I started collecting only the NRFB Barbies and not only did I run out of room but I got bored. Now, enjoying the dolls on the stands in my room is my jam! I totally agree with you on the “safe familiar space” that these dolls bring. When life gets hard it’s a place where I can go and “forget” for awhile. Before I go, have you ever heard of the naturalista line? It’s a black owned brand that makes the most gorgeous dolls with the most beautiful realistic hair. They are so lovely! 🌹

I enjoyed this video very much! I used to feel weird telling people about my collection of dolls. I guess it was fear of being judged. I often wish I had a good friend who shares my passion for dolls. Sadly, I do not. I love to watch doll hunting videos and videos about dolls. I collect Barbies, Monster High, Mermaid dolls, reborn baby dolls and Rainbow High. Basically, I collect dolls that I fall in love with! I often wonder about the “why” and what in my brain has made me love dolls so much. Especially when so many people say that dolls are “creepy”. I do not think that! I love to dress them up, play with their hair and take photos of them. Thank you so much for helping me to see that it’s OK to love my dolls! Who cares what other people think! If it helps me to be happy and “cope” with everything in life! I still wish I had a “dolly loving bestie” though!

Barbie was my first dolly love. I've been collecting her off and on since I was a kid and I so wish I still had some of my early dolls. Someday I will replace some of them. I started collecting her again when my girls grew up and moved out. I love the Asian dolls because they look like my girls. Now I collect Barbie(of course), Rainbow/Shadow High, Monster High, and some OMG. I have to be mindful of how much I collect because of both budget (I'm a teacher 😂) and space (I have to have my collection in my bedroom because I live with other people. Fortunately my room is decent sized). I go for the lines (Barbie Extra and Looks for Barbie) and specific dolls that I really love and don't try to get every single doll from every doll line. I get why some people are completionists but it just isn't practical for me. And Arjen, thank you for being part of my safe space for collecting. My family isn't negative about it but, other than my youngest daughter, they don't really get it either. I do consider you my doll collecting friend and I just think you are so fun! ❤ ya! Arjen, you covered all of the bases in this video. Being a Barbie Collector for over 50 plus years, I am truly running out of space. I used to have a Barbie Room, but since I have downsized where I live, I now only have my large 1 bedroom which has turned into a Barbie Museum. I have wall to wall shelving, NRFB Barbies everywhere, my loose Barbies from when I was a child, and my daughters from when she was a child. I had a Birthday and received another 6 Barbies, 2 Barbie coloring books, a box of pastels, 3 surprise open packs of Tattoos of Barbie Stamps, and so much more. I am truly blessed. Thank you for doing this video and mentioning scalpers. I feel they take away the Barbies from us instead of doing good for us. Thank you so very much for this wonderful insight into collecting!

Oh wow! The Conceptual Circle of Magic to ward of chaos really hit home for me! I've never really thought about it before, but the way I "play" with dolls (mostly redressing, restyling or restoring) is very meditative for me. I don't watch TV or use social media or even listen to the radio when I do it, it's one of the few times I completely allow myself to cocoon in my own little world and outside worries are shut out.
I've genuinely never thought about that before.

Very nice video for people interested in collecting. As someone who is nearing 60 and has had Barbie’s for most of my life, I just collect what I like. Unfortunately for my wallet, I have liked a lot lately: the movie Barbie’s, Monster High 3G, Rainbow High. Goodness, there are so many dolls to collect. I have never really had a space. But since my children are grown and I’m a grandma now, We are turning in one of the spare bedrooms into a doll room. I don’t have anyone in my life that really shares doll collecting either. Dear Arjen, you are a joy and most definitely pulled at my heart strings with this one! The whole 'hunt' thing, really was a 'Eureka' moment - many times, I would get a much loved doll home and within minutes, be looking for that next one! Well, as they say, humans are a 'collector' species, so we are just aligning with our natural inclination! 😉
My journey into doll collecting as an adult started in 2008 (I'm now 49), and had not had a doll since my mum, without meaning to, embarrassed me at 13 into not collecting dolls anymore. I had saved my pocket money to buy Jem from Jem and the Holograms, and she basically just said rhetorically one day, 'Aren't you too old to be playing with dolls'. I still remember that sense of humiliation - the dolls went away soon after that. Skip to 2008, I was looking for puppets like in the film 'Being John Malkovich', and came across a Dollshe Saint doll instead - that was my very first introduction to bjd's and the rest is history! BJD's, Pullip, Blythe, Ever After High, Monster High, Barbie, Sindy, so many have come and gone, but never forgotten!
I never used to like seeing dolls in boxes, (the poor dolls were suffocating!), but now I can see them as no different to 3D pieces of wall art, if you will and that's great - perspectives are not absolutes and can morph and shift all the time!^^ I'm hoping to collect some vintage Barbies too, which reminds me, somewhat painfully, that me, my sister and cousins were gifted some actual Barbie's from the 60's by my aunts when we were kids, but of course we didn't appreciate them, we just thought they were 'old dolls', (like duh) 😋 So basically, they were destroyed. I was watching Trixie Mattel today, and it made me think of how much dolls are like social-diarists for the times in plastic. lol If I see a 'Pink & Pretty Barbie (1981), my heart skips a beat as I had her as a child - I just remember how special and luxurious I thought her outfit was. Peaches & Cream Barbie was/is much coveted by me also for that nostalgia hit.
    .
Even though we are lone in our doll collecting, Arjen, I hope you know you are not alone in doll collecting (if that makes sense). We see you, we are here for you. I've said it before, but thank you for doing what you do here on UA-cam - dolls are so incredibly therapeutic and even just watching content like yours, makes the day seem a little brighter.
Best wishes and big hugs! xx P.S. Sorry for the thesis! 😅🥰💛

I feel so happy to have grabbed Pet Pal Courtney again, which is the one I really remembered from childhood. My cousin and I are obsessed with the Descendants movies so we’ve been collecting those Hasbro dolls and outfits together too. She just bought me my first Ken, the gorgeous BMR1959 with the makeup and green hair and I’m obsessed with him.

Thank you so much for your channel. There is a rush of happiness just to see my dolls each day. Lately, I have been into Barbie but I have many different types of dolls. So I would tell new collectors not to limit themselves to just one type. Certain dolls just catch me and I feel that excitement but not just for Barbie. I love the satisfaction of finding that doll that catches my eye. Many of my dolls I cherish now I do not think I would have wanted at another time in my life. So I would tell a new collector to keep an open mind and eyes. We all have our own eyes for what we like. I am so like you in that my dolls are my escape and have been for a very long time. Thank you for sharing your way of collecting. Doll collecting is such an individual hobby. Everybody does it in their own way. But I do think one important thing to keep in mind is that collecting should be fun and one should not go into debt for collecting. It is a money losing hobby. Collect only what you love and what "sparks joy. " I get asked many times by friends how much is my collection is "worth" and how much I expect on my "investment" and why I "destroy" my dolls by taking them out of the box . I tell them I collect for joy and that I don't think of it as an investment. It is an expenditure. It is like having a nice meal out at a restaurant. I enjoyed the meal and that is it. When I get a doll and I dressed it or style it to my liking, it makes me happy. I don't want to look at a doll in the box and hope that it will worth something one day. If someone wants to invest for the future, dolls are not it. Life is too short, if one wants to play with a doll out of the box, then do it. By keeping it in the box may not increase its value and they end up missing out on the fun of playing with the dolls.

Here we go...this is going to be a long one, lol. I loved this video! All of it, good job! I remember binge watching your vidoes to 3 in the morning almost 2 years ago and then sharing a picture of my childhood barbies with you all layed out on my kitchen counter. A week after that I started on this insane journey of barbie collecting. I have learned from my mistakes along the way. I've paid way to much money for dolls I thought were "rare" and turns out they were not. I've come to realize waiting and being patient is key to getting those hard to find dolls. I normally purchase naked barbies to save money and slowly piece together their outfits as I go.
I have over 600 dolls now and storing them has become a challenge! I buy the large Rubbermaid containers that can be stored under my bed. They work great! Every month I rotate dolls I have on display so every girlie can have their time to shine.
I guess the only advice I'd share is just wait. You see a doll you want so bad but it's super expensive, just wait! It will resurface again I swear! You want to enjoy collecting without putting yourself or your family into debt! Happy hunting folks!

Very interesting video! I like to collect because it does remind me of my childhood, and how much I loved playing with my dolls. So I try to recreate that feeling, that security.
And that hunting thing you mentioned, it's so true!
Tonight I went hunting at a local store that has been selling sets of doll clothes and shoes for Barbie sized dolls at $5.00, and I scored big-time! So I'm on cloud 9 tonight LOL
I think one of my motivations for collecting is I make these things I call "Barbie Packs" for kids.
Usually I give them away at Christmas time, but I'm trying to find places that will take them all year long.
Basically, I pick a doll and I give her a variety of outfits and shoes, jewelry and other accessories so that the child that gets this pack, I hope anyway, that it will impact them like Barbies did for my childhood, and be their "safe space" and comfort.
Plus, it gives me a chance to play again when I make them.
    Interesting subject!

That's why I started my UA-cam channel. Sharing my collection. I store my dolls in storage totes. I recommend Rubber Maid. I unbox most of my dolls, however, a few of my dolls I keep the packaging, and store the doll in the box. My Star Trek Green slave girl is one box I kept, and after Halloween my Draculaura, and Rainbow High masquerade dolls will go back in their boxes to come out next year for Halloween.🙂. It's easier for me at least, to store my dolls in the totes without boxes as I get more in them than I do keeping them in their boxes.

Thanks for all the wonderful tips, Arjen!! 💖 it was interesting to hear about why people get into collecting. I was the youngest of 5 kids, the oldest of which was graduating high school by the time I was born! Both of my parents worked on top of raising 5 kids and getting us to all our extracurricular activities. In my free time at home, I was usually left alone in my room with my barbies. That was my calm, happy time. Everyone was always too busy to play with me, so my barbies became my friends.

Arjen I am just so glad to have you as one of my best Collector Friends. I also have no one in my real life who appreciates Barbie the way I do. Many look at my collecting as a frivolous waste of money, however, when they are shown the appreciation in price that many of my dolls have, they are quite surprised. It is so nice to have your videos to tune in to, and I must add that you are quite the Influencer. I keep saying "No More." then you drop a video with another cutie that I probably hadn't planned on buying, but I just have to have her.

My First Barbie was 1983 and I thought she was beautiful. She was everything that I could imagine in a doll. She had great careers, she was beautiful and she was something that was mine, only mine. I began to play with Barbie a little late in life, but I then left her for a good long while, while I pursued other things… Lately Barbie has called me back to her and I am beginning a new collection. I have the @barbiestyle doll no1 and I am in love… she is gorgeous… I also have the movie dolls… I am going to get some of my dolls from my Mum’s house - thankfully she didn’t sell them or get rid of them. 😊

This past year has been life changing for me… how I view life, myself, my time and energy. Maybe it’s because I became a mom. I relate to what you say about escaping the chaos. The world is so crazy right now my Barbie’s and the Barbie world is such an escape and happy place. Wanting to live a slower life, more simple and authentic and for me that’s my Barbie collection and staying in my safe zone at times. I used to go on UA-cam and watch a lot of beauty content and you know it never made me feel better after watching it… watching Barbie videos, connecting with other Barbie collectors gives me such peace and happiness. What a nice topic. I wanna share my story too. I don’t collect dolls but I like to buy dolls I like, first of all because of budget and space! I have been diagnosed with severe allergy to dogs and cats, and I had to give my lovely black cat baby to my co-worker, who loves him so much❤ so all is good with my previous fur baby. After that I was so lonely and I started to gaze at dolls, because obviously I can have only toys because of my medical condition. When I was a kid I had only 2 budget barbies and few fake barbies because our family was poor back then when I was a child. But I made tons of custom clothes for them and I liked it so much and found comfort in my craft. Now from God’s bless I am in a better position and I thought why not to buy dolls now? And I can bring that joy in my life that I was not able to afford! I remember after school I will got to stores just to have a look at those wonderful Barbies, packed in beautiful pink boxes, with beautiful dresses and shoes! It was a heaven for me, my little secret, even in my teenage years but I simply could not afford them 😢 and I thought that one day, when I will have a pay cheque like those adults, those wonderful dolls would be mine 😊. Then I forgot about my dream due to school, college and career. After I left in this empty spot, after I had to give away my fur baby, it just clicked! I started to buy rainbow high dolls, there were available and started to become very popular and I think I entered this doll world in right time, because I love rainbow high dolls! Such a good quality. In total I have majority rainbow high dolls, and couple shadow. Then other good event happened is a release of G3 Monster High dolls, guys we live in a good time in terms of dolls. And of course I fell in love with them too, only G3, the old ones are too scary for me 😅. Then I thought how about Barbie? The girl who actually brought the spark to me with dolls? And I struggled, my beautiful girl is now pixellated and losing quality😢😢😢. I bought only one barbie extra (#3 pixellated) and few cutie reveal ones, thanks they are not pixellated, have long saran hair. Love 💗 your series of cutie reveal by the way! By the way I just got pink bear girl, she has saran hair, eyes are ok, BUT her lips slightly pixellated. I haven’t found that perfect Barbie doll yet, so I want to learn how to reroot Barbie so girl will have long gorgeous hair 😅. That being said, I am new, I have in total only around 45 dolls, and by calculation I spent around 2k😅😅 cad, so I am very mindful about budget and a space. I am not crazy and not a complete collection person, if I don’t like I can skip entire collection, I buy only dolls I like and interact with, because they are first of all for my mental health and overall joy. I have plans to learn of how to reroot doll, customize their lip colour with acrylic paint and varnish, make clothes and customize shoes 👠. I like that craft aspect of it so I play less video games 😂. And in that case I interact and engage with my dolls, I compain to them about life, news, politics and etc. They are very patient and supportive 😅😊. I live in Canada and can say that Facebook Market place is the safest and cheapest place to buy dolls from collectors in a good condition. I bought couple of thrift dolls and just simply disgusted, they are dirty, moldy, can have a whole bunch of other bacteria and such so I decided never do that. Guys I recommend checking Facebook Market Place. Join dolls communities and see what other collectors have, before release of collections usually they try to sell there first for cheap. I just recently bought from one collector all three Korean band Rainbow high dolls, mint for just $75 cad! Here in Canada some people even agree to ship internationally, so if you approach safely and respectfully people will understand and ship it to you to Europe. Check USA and Canada facebook market, I have seen people sell STUFF! Join our doll communities, become part of it, get to know people and let the Internet connect you guys. I don’t hunt old dolls, I am quite happy what we have now, if anything I have plans to customize until I reach my perfect point. Any way, happy hunting people, the HUNT 😅, let it to bring dolls we wish! ❤. 😊

Arjen, thank you very much for such an interesting video. My magic circle of safety is the books my sister and I love to read from time to time, and our two Meena Fleur dolls from Rainbow High🦊. Special thanks for the terminology, I had to screenshot everything so that I could then rewrite it in a notebook😅. I'm so glad that I have such a wonderful friend like you😭🤗 who lives across the ocean! ^^
From time to time I forgot to read the Russian auto-translation😂, because I was looking at your hat all the time😅, I like it so much. What a pity that this hat can no longer be bought anywhere (I remember that you wrote to me that you bought it somewhere in Korea)😊 ~

Regarding storage in basements: not everyone’s basement is the same and some can be okay for storage. However, it is necessary to check the humidity in different seasons with a good-quality hygrometer and buy a dehumidifier, if necessary. Of course if there is mold growing in corners and/or other items stored there like clothes have gotten moldy, don’t risk it.

Hi there, I just subscribed. Loved the video. I love the vintage Barbies, I just started up on this but cannot believe the prices of the vintage clothing and not to mention the dolls. I do have a #4 and #5 Forget #1 #2, #3, (they have a prototype of #1 on eBay - $25,000). I want to show the progress of Barbie in my collection from the early 60's to today. I do have some repros and I absolutely loved the Silkstones. Have you checked some of the prices on those now? It's just unreal. So I am selling off some of my other dolls that I have collected through the years and thinning out. So yes, it's good to search and go to flea markets to see if you can discover anything. The dolls and collecting take my mind off of stress and people nowadays. The dolls take me back to when I was growing up. You provide wonderful tips and just fun looking and searching. Most of my dolls are Barbie's followed by arround 30 Integrity Toys dolls , some Tonner Dolls and just a handful of random other dolls.
I have stopped to collect Integrity Toys dolls and Tonner Dolls arround 5 years ago ... can't remember why (maybe it was the lack of interesting new dolls) ... sad thing is that since December 2018, the Tonner Doll company officially closed. :(
Now I'm at the point that I'm waiting that Mattel releases more dolls that I want , just a month ago I have even bought 2 of my longtime grail collector dolls.

Regarding price: When I am on eBay, I select the “sold” filter so I see what dolls actually sell for vs. what sellers think they should get. Also, I live in Canada, and I know that if someone is selling from Canada, the price will usually be lower because the population is smaller, and I think many US residents don’t bother buying from outside their own country.

I’ve seen people use acme cream to get rid of sun yellowing and sometimes marker you put cream on the stains or yellow spots and the. Wrap the doll in cling wrap and leave them on the sun for at least a day and wash it off then repeat if needed it takes multiple times sometimes just thought I’d throw this in here for anyone who has dolls that may need it
Also I so feel seen with that quite on the collection being a circle of magic against chaos and uncertainty my dolls are so calming for me I adore them

Oh my goodness, this was such an intense and informative video. You covered many key points of collecting Barbies. This top is far and wide. As for me I've been collecting Barbies and all sorts of dolls for over twenty years. And let's not get into space, which is always an issue for me. But let me say this was how i snatched my husband. I began by bringing one doll into his home. Then there were more. He also purchased them for me. And if i want my very first Barbie from childhood, it will cost him over $10,000. Which he loves me, but I don't think That Much.😂. The #1 Barbie from 1959. Okay now you know my age..oops!. I'm obsessed with that black and white striped bathing suit. I have all the reproductions including the bathing suit alone framed in a shadow box. So, if you ask if i have an addiction to Barbies. Well yeah!.. keep those videos coming Arjen. I'll keep watching😊❤

My collection isn't big. I have a few dolls. I dont have a space for a big collection for many reasons. But the bigbest issue is that Im afraid to be judge by my family. I love them with all of my heart. They are great but... Im na audult and I think they wouldnt undestand why Im collecting and why Im spending money on dolls. I keep my barbies im my wardrobe behind my clothes. Nobady knows 😐 They are my safety place but also a secret that I dont want to have.

I still love them but I did stop buying them since well, SPACE, haha and I wanted to focus more on Vintage Barbies for my collection instead of adding new dolls lines 🙈😅🩷 WHICH IS SUPER HARD because these RH doll man! they are just soo good!

@Barbination I like them because the clothes are great quality and I can get them very cheap. I know in Europe they are more money. My favorite Barbie line is The Looks. As much as I like the line I feel like I get more for my money when I buy RH Dolls. Plus, their clothes fit the petite body well.

A couple of key learns for me; collect what you love. You are never going to be able to own every single Barbie doll & accessory ever released, so learning what you’re really passionate about (theme, era, face sculpt, license) helps narrow the field on what you’re looking for. The other is patience, in most instances Barbie was mass produced & though we get into the habit of believing in a dolls rarity the reality is she will pop up again (and again) & often times at a better or more affordable price. 🩷

That whole 'conceptual circle of magic that wards off uncertainty and chaos' quote was definitely an AHA moment for me! Had to hit pause and write it all down. Thank you for making this video! The deeper why? of doll collecting is something that so so rarely gets talked about. 🩷

I’ve always been of the belief that MIB or NM, means that at some point the doll has been out of the box & replaced to sell or NM can mean that the doll is lose (no box) but has no wear as she’s lived on a shelf with little play. So a NRFB doll would mean that she’s remained sealed the entirety of her life or a completely new release. To broaden the definitions a little more. 🩷
