- One of the most important parts of owning a fursuit is taking proper care of it. However, while care before and during your performance in suit is important, what you do AFTER a fursuiting session can end up making the most difference for long-term care!

you're suit is beautiful. I also have a Digitigrade suit of my character, I brush her every day even if I haven't worn her, I wash her paws, I wash the tail and the head. I love my suit so much and I spent 13k on it so I take pride in taking care of her
Oh be careful of overbrushing! We don't want her balding :( fursuits don't grow back new fur like real animals! (Unfortunately :p)
@@DreamtaleEnjoyer ohhhh I didn't think about that.... oops maybe I'll brush her twice a week now and wash her once every other week. im somewhat still new to owning a fursuit... its been 7-8 years of owning her but im still learning new stuff

I guess you could call me a hard core suiter. I usually go 5+ hours at a time at cons and im extremely active. My usual routine after de-suiting at a con is to flip the suit and paws inside out and spray liberally with my home made fursuit spray, then after flipping inside right, It gets hung up on one of those wetsuit dryer hangers with a fan in it to dry (those hangers are a godsend!). While its hanging I brush it out with a slicker brush with the brush held backwards so as to pull as little fur out as possible. I also use the same spray on my under armor. Its always a good feeling towards the end of a con when someone says I smell great! When I get home, everything gets washed in the washing machine and properly stored away. Ive been using this method since 2017 and going to multiple cons a year and everything still looks amazing!

I spray it very lightly on the outside just to be safe, most of it is inside

i really need someone to go in depth about how to wash different types of suit heads that use different materials. You cant wash a 3D printed head the same way you wash a foam base for example, and an EVA foam head is usually heavier so i assume it would be harder to dry. Ect ect
I agree! I’ve got a 3D printed kemono suit. And there’s like. No tutorials about how to wash them!!

If you ARE the maker, then i'd assume 3D printed bases should be washed just like Resin bases: Spot clean only. Something he didn't mention in the video is that you should ALSO use fursuit spray regularly on the inside of the head to prevent mold and bacteria growth (Just be careful not to spray the eye mesh, as some sprays can react with the paint on eye meshes and ruin them)! You should do this regardless of base material, but foam is much more likely to trap and grow mold than hard plastics or resin. Depending on the lining state inside of your head, be it if it's lined or not, can determine the best ways for you to clean the inside of your head. if there is no lining, you could even take some sort of sanitizing wipe to the inside of the head (Again, just be mindful of eye mesh and any electronics if your suit has any).

Edit: Should also mention, make sure you give your head enough time to air out after cleaning before you put it on again, especially if you use some sort of sani wipe! and of course, if you do use one, you can wipe off any residue with a paper towel!

You're actually a lifesaver x) I didn't make my suit myself, I commissioned it from a Chinese fursuitmaker, but when I asked about how to go about cleaning one of their suits, due to the language barrier I didn't get a lot out of it. So this is extremely helpful!!! I have used fursuit spray up till now, and have kept brushing my suit. I also put tiny anti bacteria packets in the box I keep my fursuit in. But thank you so much again for the tips, I really appreciate it and will definitely use them!! ^w^
Good info! The one improvement you could make is to place some USB desk fans inside the arms, legs, and/or head to help dry things out after suiting and before you fold your suit up. Those fans are easy to travel with and work with fursuit spray to prevent bad smells. I use them to keep Mach the big belly brown dragon fresh after suiting.
I miss advocating to use a fan to dry after allowing some minutes for desinfection to work. This is very helpfull to stretch the time after which a fursuit needs washing which can be a challenge on its own especially regarding foam heads.

I very recently made the financially questionable decision to commission a fursuit, so this info will be very handy next year (assuming I can pay it off before the next con). I absolutely love the purple/yellow contrast in your suit. It's stunningly gorgeous.
i have special hanger that actually ment for wetsuits it works wonders for my suit after use and i also spray my stuff down
Thank you for this! Im making my own fursuit for the first time and this helps whenever I get the project done! Since I don’t want to end up getting my fursuit smelly or moldy from the bacteria of the sweat! But I’m making a fursuit of my furry oc! I Just cant wait to wear the fursuit at my first convention or when I do public fursuiting!
Just a heads up about making fursuit spray! You want to use the straight from the bottle 70% concentration or diluted equivalent for actual disinfecting. Per the CDC isopropyl alcohol MUST be above 50% and below 90% to be effective at sanitizing surfaces.
I personally use just a 70% bottle from the pharmacy for my suit then do a couple small spritzes of the scented stuff where I wanna smell nice.

The alcohol solution is good to use each time after fursuiting at a con and put a fan blasting on high in the hotel room when you’re not using it. Then when I suit up again I’ll spray it with scented fursuit spray or even just body spray on the outside. Then when coming home I’ll wash it in a washing machine under delicate inside out. Don’t use Whoolite!!!
I've been using woolite ever since I got my suit and it's fine, so why shouldn't I use it? Is it dangerous for the fur?
@@sweetzeyraa it’s not dangerous lol. Whoolite is designed for natural wool and wool needs to retain its natural oils to keep wool looking nice. Synthetic furs don’t need oil. So whoolite won’t wash away your own oils from your fursuit completely. It looks and feels fresh but is not as clean as you think it will be. You have to wash your fur in COLD water. And you know oil is tough to wash away in cold water.

5:08 No Finn!! Unscented fursuit spray leaves NO scent behind! Isopropyl alcohol COMPLETELY evaporates off, not a trace of alcohol scent behind, and of course water is the same. It does smell strongly of alcohol while it's still wet, but after it's all dry there seriously isn't a trace.
Source: I wear a mask with a cardboard base that can't be deep cleaned for obvious reasons. I learned that scented sprays will build up residue after a while, so my only option for her is unscented spray. I've had her for a few months now and recently wore her for several hours on end out in the sun for a renaissance faire-after a good thorough spray and drying under a fan she's scentless! AND my family is known to have extra sensitive noses, my dad is genuinely like a drvg sniffing dog. We'd know if she smelled at all! Like alcohol or otherwise :p

What if your fursuit/kaiju suit doesn't have fur what do you do to keep it clean and smelling fresh?
I don't know if Finn has done a video on this but what is the best way to travel with a suit? I see that he had a decent size case for his but what are some things I or others can do to help protect our suits during travel. I'm hoping to travel with mine both by air and ground so any tips and tricks would help out greatly. And thank you Finn for all the useful information.👍
I have a partial so its a bit easier, but I use a big post bag that I can easily put away under a chair or something. Its like a sack, and it just happens to be wide enough to fit in my head/tail/paws along with accessoires. Its very useful for smaller furmeets or events where I don't have to stay anywhere.
If traveling for a longer time I do use a case, although practically I can travel with that too (I had to for Nordic Fuzzcon, though that's mostly because the con was part of a 3-week vacation in Denmark so I ran out of space XD).
Of course I don't just dump it in there. All the parts are in seperate plastic bags (especially the head, because it has hair and having it clit along other parts or stuff I take along would be messy). I like to put lil' noise-compression foamsquares between parts, but anything works there (blankets, towels, pillows, w/e you have in house really), it just happens that I have an abundance of that stuff.
Cushioning that stuff is particulary true for 3d-printed bases.
Basically, TLDR, assure it won't be able to move in your case/bag to reduce force of impact by cushioning it. Its very hard to damage it that way during travel even if you or flight personal are rough with it.
I have never brushed any of my fursuits that's why I have fursuits that are well over 20 years old that are still quite wearable.
Every time you brush your suit you are pulling out fibers that will never grow back. That's why you see so many fursuits being retired only after a few years as they are developing bald spots.
I don't have mine for relatively as long and have used brushes, but since recently I just swapped to a big-gap comb.
Its great. Takes longer (..slightly) sure but when I'm in the lounge I'm socializing while taking care of my suit anyway, and the effect is still similar regardless (and you have more control overall). No fibers are being pulled out either. Combine it with a good spray (I use a hair-repair spray, smells nice and keeps the fibers unclitted) and you're set really.

What case do you use to store your suit??
not a fursuiter but i do work costumes in theatre: when costumes aren't washed between shows (and sometimes even when they are gonna be washed) we use a similar type of spray to disinfect. you can use vodka mixed with either a 1:1 or 1:2 water to vodka ratio (or straight vodka if its particularly bad), and I've worked in a theatre where they also mix in a little bit of unscented laundry detergent. make sure to hit the spots where you sweat the most and make sure that the spray seeps into the fabric. give the rest of it a solid spray as well but rlly focus on parts like the armpits, back, and crotch. I personally wouldn't recommend having the scented oil in the disinfectant spray, you wont smell the alcohol once its dry at all and the oils could build up and be more difficult to clean properly later. if you want a particular scent then i'd say once you next put the suit on to give a little spritz of the scent you want.
additionally, in general careful when washing the foam itself, it dries super slow and can mold super easily so try to avoid soaking the foam.

Not really! Overwashing is definitely a thing! Firstly you can combat balding when you DO wash your suit by turning things inside out where you can (I.e. bodysuit, maybe handpaws) and putting other things in mesh bags to protect the fur. Or, since washing machines are inherently just really aggressive, you can go with the bathtub soup version :p (fill a bathtub with cool water and a splash of fursuit-safe detergent, toss suit in, rub sweaty areas gently, rinse a few times, then hang to dry & brush gently as usual)
But really only wash when you can tell it's necessary, when a good spray-down isn't enough. If you can't tell whether it's still musky after a spray, there's no shame in asking a friend! Hope that helps ^^
@@DreamtaleEnjoyer Thank you for the advice. Tbh my fursuit is partial (head, handpaws, footpaws, sleeves and tail) so I can only turn upside down the sleeves and the handpaws, the others would be with a simple spray. I'm asking mostly because I'll wear it when heat comes so I needed some advice XD
@@voleitor2016 You ever compared doing the dishes with rinsing after mealtime or w/o? And how much harder it is to properly clean dishes w/o doing the rinsing step and letting it fester for a bit?
Same with fursuits. If you apply immediate care after suiting each time, it'll go a long way. I realistically don't have to actually wash my suit that often in such a deep manner (even with my floordragger tail, which sees washing more often, but not so much that it gets annoying and it depends where I'm dragging it around)
@@RazakelKairo1994 So basically is getting the parts on water and let it be for a bit if it gets too stained? As much maybe I could shoot some alcohol inside the parts, it'd be good for the times I'll wear it.
