I actually knew someone who refused to wear a bridesmaid dress at her best friend’s wedding because “it made her look pregnant.” She backed out as a bridesmaid and their friendship was over. I mean, if I had a BFF and they wanted me to wear an ugly dress, I’d do it! It would be my friend’s day, not mine. But yeah, I’m sure that’s how their conversation went. It was quite the scandal 😮
i feel like the lack of proper communication is the core of the problem here. the fact they're calling last minute after the dress was already paid for and then got a different dress on their own without consulting the bride about it is causing a bunch of unnecessary stress and drama. getting dresses that all of the maids will love isn't easy but there should still be an effort and it should come to a conclusion in a timely manner. i can only speak for myself here now but if i were a bridesmaid i'd still wanna feel pretty and comfortable, like i want to enjoy the day alongside the bride and everyone else, and not feel like sh/t because i'm wearing a dress that i hate. but i reiterate that's something that should be discussed _way_ ahead of time
I wouldn't wear a dress that would've made me look pregnant tbh, I'd wear at least some belt or waist lace with it so to not look pregnant , that or propose a change and sew of others agree, if they don't agree then attend as a regular guest. A friendship shouldn't depend wether you are a bridesmaid or not, you can support the bride from a little bit afar as a guest, finding middle ground between ppl is great as long there's respect.

You dont like the dress you can suggest a change and if most ppl dont agree to your change suggestion , you either can put some light decorations on your bridesmaid dress like a belt or flower or a mild bow, if not agree to disagree and respectfully step down from bridesmaid and attend as a guest(you can still support the bride from afar as a guest,no need to be a bridesmaid if you dont want to be so or dont like the conditions of it)in whatever you like as long as it's formal/in theme ,whatever dress or even suit you like. Respect and communication can go a long way.
