If they intentionally looked for their Lex among the Superman auditions, that'd be very clever.
They didn’t.
Thats how Tom Hiddleston got Loki lol he auditioned for Thor
@@0912sooli
Yup there's even videos of Tom wielding Mjnoir with long blonde hair
Did marvel say they intentionally seeked Loki from Thor auditions or was it that they preferred Hiddleston in the Loki role after seeing him?
@@0912sooli He auditioned for Thor and they offered him Loki, I'm saying if there's a yin yang thing in your movie, to make it more convincing casting someone who irl thinks of themself as the good guy while fitting the other part more is a genuinely good casting strategy.
The fact he initially turned down Lex Luthor auditions and insisted on going for Superman is the most Lex thing imaginable. He’s gonna crush this.
Happy to see Holt get the role of Lex after missing out on both Batman and Superman! I’m sure he’s gonna crush it.
Someone who lost out on Batman and Superman playing Lex feels so poetic
Hoult is the dude you think is completely normal and within the first 20 seconds of talking to him you realize “oh you’re weird.” but you stick around due to the initial approachability.
That's something Lex and Clark both have
They're both geeks and nerds who just happened to be very charming and charismatic enough to where you don't fully see it at first
Which is very cool
My favorite quote of the video: “I gotta say, we’ve got a lot of actors in this movie.”
Phew! Imagine if they wanted anyone other than actors? It’d be a mess…
@@alexmartin3143 I say they should've gotten a bunch of oil drillers and then trained them to be actors! It's the perfect plan!
@@alexmartin3143We need race swapped actors like the folks at Disney and marvel 😂
Holt is a perfect cast for Lex. He has the calm and calculated feel, but you know under the surface he can go crazy at any moment, or that he's brewing something bigger. I can see Holt as insane Lex, evil scientist Lex, friend Lex and politician Lex.
Yep. I can already see that as he abused Elle Fanning on The Great season 1 EP 1. I'm watching the whole show just to see his evil side😊
And he gives off "Hey this guy gets us common folk" Politician vibe that Lex Luthor has
I'm so happy to hear he will be cast as Lex Luthor. Honestly, I think he's a perfect pick to play Lex, especially if you've seen his performance on the show 'The Great', which I really think solidifies how well he could play Lex Luthor as on that show he can play a charismatic and charming man of power while still having an underlying layer of cunning, cruelty and imposing menace. I absolutely cannot wait to see his performance!
Him and David Corenswet on screen together could give us one of the best depictions of the iconic rivalry put to screen, maybe even become one of the best CBM rivalries as I can imagine his dynamic with Corenswet's Superman will be *ELECTRIC!!!*
I also find it ironically poetic how he couldn't get cast as Batman or Superman yet is cast as Lex, which I imagine will be a great personal motivation when playing as Lex
We have never had a good Lex Luthor in a live-action Superman movie, so Nicholas Hoult as Lex could finally give us the intelligent businessman/calculating evil genius we've been begging for on screen.
I'm glad you recapped the video for us
DUDE I'm already watching The Great and holy shit Nick Hoult will be the best Lex Luthor since the Smallvile Lex 😊
@@I-speak-U-shut-itI am really happy to hear that you see the vision for him as Lex. That show really portrays how menacing Hoult can be in a role, and Im sure he could really bring in a layer of nuance and intellectual charisma to the role to make us both love and hate Lex Luthor as a character. We've never really gotten a good live-action movie depiction of Lex Luthor, and audiences deserve the chance to see why he's Superman's archenemy and one of the greatest villains in fiction.
Something I want to see out of this new movie is the classic idea that Lex actually had hair before he met Clark and lost his hair to the Kryptonite he started hording, essentially killing himself over his own ego just for a leg up on Supes
You don’t have to imagine Hoult being bald, just watch Mad Max Fury Road!
Oh man he was brilliant in this! 100%!
@@ItsTheCatSpeaking24FACTS 😊
Glad to see we can watch previous shows and movies with Nick Hoult in it to know he'll be great Lex Luthor in comparison to that trash ding ding ding snotty nose Jesse Eisenberg Lex Luthor 🤣
I’m hoping for a Lex that believes he DESERVES everything because he has the base to understand that looking the part means he can have the power necessary.
Lex might have the power to HELP Superman but he may not understand that Superman is a super version of a man. And being a Man who is Super is what he wants and what he desires
I would like to point out that holt is nearly the same hight as superman, with him being 6'4 and holt being 6'3
How he almost played superman makes me think how most of the best Doom/Mr Fantastic picks could play either character
you make an excellent point about lex eventually helping the justice league. i really feel that is the type of universe gunn is going to build out
If this Superman movie is going to jump into Superman having been active for a while, I think it would be cool to see this Lex start out as a full blown hero trying to emulate Superman, à la SuperLex from the DC Universe Rebirth where he wore blue armor with a red cape and the S shield.
Hahaha Like Syndrome trying to be the hero at the end battle of the Incredibles. Before the Incredibles showed up to the city to save the day.
I was first introduced to Nicholas Hoult in About a Boy and have followed his career ever since. Dude has played so many characters who are basically Lex Jr., chief among them being Tony from Skins. He's got this in the bag!
He was bald in Mad Max so you can already see what he looks like.
It’s been highlighted how the heroes are mostly all legacy characters. But Lex also has the pressure of his family legacy specifically from his father and that complicated relationship. He is a Jr. after all
I adore his acting
He’s got such a wide range and is no stranger to playing scientists so yes I can ABSOLUTELY see him as Lex.
And I’m excited
Imma need to hear your reactions to the Jimmy Olsen casting
dear god, Gunn is COOKING with this cast. Clark, Lois, Lex AND Jimmy are all so perfectly cast. Can’t wait to see who they cast for Jor, Perry white and the Kents
Definitely a safer and more conventional choice than Howerton.
Hoult's been golden for over a decade, and he seems to be on the shortlist for almost everything that isn't a big action spectacle. He's done prestige, he's done comic book, he's done romance, he's done comedy. Former child actor turned movie star, or about as close as most people can get to being movie stars these days. And he's still pretty young, so if all goes well, he could play the roll for 20 years or more if he wants to. My only reservation is that he's starting off too young for Lex. I would have liked to see a clearer break from Eisenberg.
Fair, but I think his overall build and demeanor is different enough from Eisenberg that its a non-issue. Plus, they could be doing the "Lex and Superman are contemporaries/maybe teenage buddies?". Who knows, maybe this Lex will be an up-and-coming Metropolis entrepreneur, playing off Clark also being new to metropolis.
@@ProjektTaku Well, the writing and directing are going to make a far greater difference than the actor chosen. I was just hoping for a more mature (Clancy Brown-esque) Lex. I prefer Lex to embody the status quo that Superman, by his very existence, can't help but challenge. Sure, Superman stands up for the little guy, but the little guy usually has to fear the big guy more than the monster/mutant/scientist psycho of the week. Lex represents traditional authority, the sort people had to run to for help because there was literally no other power (no Zorro, no Robin Hood) to appeal to. Superman is a challenge to this centuries-old, even feudalistic, relationship between commoner and Lord. For a young man, Supes' age, to represent this age-old authority? Doesn't fit. I prefer an older Lex.
@@andrewklang809 I do enjoy the DCAU lex, but this can work as well. We don't often get to see what Lex did to get big in metropolis, its kind of just implied he used his super-smarts in some vague way to help, along with shady business.
If you really want Superman to embody his "Champion of the oppressed" title, Morgan Edge could work, if they want to go with the traditional version instead of the fantastic S&L Superman's brother version, and be the rep for the status quo, and once he's defeated Lex fills in that gap. Plus Lex can grow with this Superman into the mature version of the DCAU.
People often forget that Lex & Supes being contemporaries isn't new, goes way back to the silver age with the first Alexander Luthor (Earth-2's Lex was named Alexei was quite a bit different from that lex and the modern one, more psychotic and bloodthirsty).
Much as I love Howerton and think he'd make a great villain in something, Gunn's right to cast a similar age to the actor playing Superman.
I would love to see Howerton playing Eobard Thawne but I don't really see Thawne showing up any time soon.
Michael Rosenbaum was a great Lex Luthor 😄
@banquetoftheleviathan1404Yo I didn't know he was in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia till like the end of the episode when he stole money from the cash register 😂
The writing on Smallville frequently had me rolling my eyes, but Michael Rosenbaum consistently gave a solid performance.
Supergirl also had a lot of eyeroll seasons, but season 4 was by far the strongest (in terms of writing...with the budget and schedule of that show, you kind of just have to take the production value for what it is) and Jon Cryer was another (surprisingly) great Lex, and very well utilized for that storyline.
But animation is really where there have been multiple very consistent, very well executed takes on Lex. Clancy Brown's version in the DCAU being the most notable, obviously.
I hope this will be the first cinematic Lex to come close to any of those.
A lot of his roles are him being subordinate to an older man… Renfield(Dracula), Mad Max: Fury Road(Immortan Joe), The Menu(Ralph Fiennes), First Class/DOFP(Charles, kinda)
Not even the first time he's been bald, he was always in Mad Max: Fury Road which is one of my all time favourites and he's such an engaging and traggic character in that, he's a supreme actor
I do hope the role plays to his strengths and not try to force a mold that doesn't work like Jesse Eisenberg.
I still think his Lex Luthor could have worked if it was more 'Evil Mark Zuckerberg' and not Discount Joker.
I want him to be like the Smallvile Lex Luthor 😊
Lex is beloved by metropolis so he needs to be moreso like a George Soros tycoon philanthropist mixed with Bill Clinton type of person
Someone who's seen as a icon with a few people like Lois and Clark maybe Jimmy seeing through the facade
Mark Zuckerberg isn't well liked by the majority of people (I don't dislike or like him I'm indifferent)
I remember hearing Clancy Brown did a fantastic Superman audition for the 90s cartoon that they really liked and then they were like "Oh hey, could you read for Lex too? We think you'd be brilliant for that" and the rest is history 😊
I'm glad he's Lex. The perfect voice for the role.
@@I-speak-U-shut-it
Nando mentioned parasite since he was in All Star Superman and Superman legacy is inspired by that comic, I can see him showing up
James Gunn's "Slither" movie is almost like a homage to Parasite and his origin story
Even the absorbing sub plot
It’s fine, but Nando had me sold on Leslie Odom Jr. He is my Lex. But I’m willing to see the Beast take a shot at it
I just keep getting more and more excited for this film but also the new DCU as a whole! I love the way the Gunn is fleshing out this universe so early on. Can’t wait to see the finished product!
I'll admit I went through a bit of a Nicholas Hoult burnout not too long ago, but this news is really exciting! Outside of Smallville, I've never been very satisfied with the live action portrayals of my favorite DC villain, but I feel like Hoult and Gunn can do him justice.
Loved him in The Menu, I can totally see him conniving and plotting.
Makes sense. Lex should be an example of what Batman and Superman would be if they weren’t super.
People should see Superman and Batman as “the desire” and “the goal” respectively.
He should wish he had the physical power and acumen of Superman, and the drive and conviction of Batman. His flaw should be that he believes he needs to do the wrong things to become the amalgation of both
I really love this is the story he picked to tell.
I really hope that this goes through, for Hoults sake. I also love the choice. He and Corenswet are the same age and he rivals him in height. Those are the two things I wanted from Lex. I hope that Gunn wants Lex to bulk up as well
I'm happy with the casting Hoult will nail it
I saw the thumbnail first and thought he was buzz Lightyear lol
No way, i was just reading a comic with lex and then this notification came up, AWESOME!!!
Interesting…
He did a pretty solid job acting in those X-men movies, both when he was well written and when he wasn’t.
I think, and this is entirely just a random theory, Lex will be Lois and Clark’s (not as Superman) villain in this. I imagine this will show Clark having to actually balance the two lives. Clark and Lois are investigating LexCorp because Lois has a hunch that Luthor is up to something and Clark tags along because of his feelings for her, maybe Jimmy is there too sort of Adventures with Superman style. And then Clark has to disappear at points to deal with the Engineer which will lead to him coming back to Lois when she’s confronting Lex because he “got lost” or something like that. Idk, just an idea
I think his character in Skins is a great building block for the egotistical Sociopath that Lex needs to be, a Charming manipulator that gets what he wants and uses people like puppets, Effectively only for his own benefit
Folded all my clothes watching this one. Another great video, thanks.
Totally agree about the "north stars" for Lex: the DCAU Lex as voiced by Clancy Brown is what I imagine, while Rosenbaum did a great job embodying a more human, nuanced Lex. I found Cryer grating in what I saw of him, but I didn't watch Supergirl so I missed out on most of his stuff, just Crisis on Infinite Earths and previews for Supergirl. Much as he has problems, I think Kevin Spacey did a solid job of melding the Gene Hackman more jokey Lex with menace, which is certainly a route to consider, was not that big on the Lois & Clark Lex (or much else of that show).
I hope this is a Lex that is able to develop from an evil businessman to a full on supervillain. Ideally I wanna see him go from businessman to the president to being disgraced to leading the legion of doom, I do like businessman Lex but I wanna see something else
Hoult is exceptional casting. Stoked to see this.
You bring up the character briefly in the video but I’d love to see you go through candidates for James Bond!
Him being of similar age to Supes means we can have the Clark-Lex friendship that was so compelling in Smallville before Lex goes full evil.
It pains me that we've never had a live action Luthor that was everything I love about the character. The genius, the false philanthropist and humanitarian, the businessman, the leader, the egotistical megalomaniac, Superman's nemesis but also a threat to the entire JL.
I hope this new version is all of it, and like you say, he can be many things.
Upon hearing this I started catching up on The Great starting with Season 2 - Hoult really is a good actor, very good at playing charming sleazy egomaniac!
If you get a chance to see Skins, Hoult does a very solid audition as like a teenage version of Lex. Tony Stonem has this arrogant, entitled, catty persona, like he feels like he's the smartest person in the room whether he is or not, that, aged up, would feel Lex to me
Nando, Have you ever seen Smallville? To alot of people, that version of Lex is the definitive version.
Having a Lex that could have also been Superman is amazing. Lex has that strong distaste for Superman in part because he wants to be him. Superficially the characters are similar. They both got power, influence, good looks, and in a sense try to do good in the world but there's always something ideologically that Lex has a problem with. I'm very excited to see how the cast and crew represent this.
My girlfriend put me onto Skins recently and man does it back up this casting. Even as a young newcomer actor, he’s always had this innate ability of playing a cunning (almost sociopathic) douchebag that at the same time has a LOT of charisma. It’s wild cause he’d make an amazing Batman or Superman but he’s PERFECT for Lex. He’s got so much range and that makes me even more excited for his casting.
His perfect blend for Lex Luthor now really thinking about it
I really like Nicholas Hoult, and based on his character from The Favourite, I think he could be a pretty fun Lex Luthor
Very funny this got posted right before Jimmy Olsen
I'd absolutely love this casting. Hoult really is a great actor and he shines when he can play complex, mysterious or unhinged characters, rather than heroes. Batman or Superman wouldn't have been a good fit. But this is perfect for him.
Since and Hold and Corenswet are close in age (holt is 33 and Corenswet is 30) I could see Legacy taking some inspirations from Birthright, with Clark and Luthor being established as friends in Smallville until an incident caused a fallout between the two.
Nando be like : this is great , wouldnt of been my choice ( insert actor who doesnt look anything like the comicbook counterpart)
Can we, as dudes normalize calling other dudes handsome, without being made fun of for sounding gay? It’s easy to recognize and appreciate a handsome man, as a man. Doesn’t mean you’re gay.
Michael Rosenbaum offered to shave Nicholas Hoult’s head. Have Clancy Brown help shave Hoult’s head. I want to see that video and I want to see Nicholas in the Luthor Armor. That would be awesome to see him in the armor.
It's a shame your casting picks are never right, because you have a great eye and great takes. Casting directors should be reaching out to you!
I really like Lex as he's depicted in "Young Justice" he has David Xanatos energy.
Well seeing how tom hiddlston lost thor and loki is one of the best characters of the mcu I am very exited to see holts take
FACTS Something tells me that Hoult will outshine Superman 😊
he was soooo good in “The Menu”
And The Great on Hulu
I thought he was a terrible Beast but this is a nice fit.
I hope we see a convincingly charismatic Luthor. Someone that could become the president like his comic counterpart.
In The Great he has his embalmed mother kept in a glass sarcophagus in the middle of the hall and he brings his fiancee to 'meet Mother'. He has all the issues and needs intense therapy and to be taken out of power and he'll be fine. Please watch it.
In The Great Nick does a phenomenal job of getting across a character who has goodness in him, but through a very abusive set of parents encouraging his cruelty and just generally sucking, along with having power all his life that entitlement doesn't feel like a strong enough word to describe, has caused him to be a selfish, cruel and insecure person. It'll be so cool to see these traits not played for comedy (tho knowing Gunn there'll be plenty of laughs) and allowing him to play a smart character. Peter is a dummy. A himbo if you will. Don't believe me, watch the show
Skins is a must watch such a good show!!!
First show where he plays a character who isn’t good hearted but grows overtime
He also did a great job on The Menu. And all of these are great range. In the Menu, he is someone so obsessed with food that I think he could apply that to Alex who is obsessed with power.
Cranston isn't bald lol. And if you're just talking about bald characters, Hoult has played one of those. Also, Cranston would've made the greatest Lex EVER at one point in time, obviously being aged out of the role now. But a movie focused on the creation and evolution of Lex in the same vein as Joaquin's Joker, yeah, Cranston would've absolutely owned that part like nobody else. So pumped about Hoult, though, he was maybe my top choice for Gunn's world.
Yaaaaaasssssss we LOVE to see it!!
I'm also excited about this casting news of Hoult as Lex Luthor. Also primarily because of his work in The Menu.
I liked most of the original casting in the original DCEU EXCEPT for Jesse Eisenberg as Lex. He was too introverted neurotic to me that didn't make me believe this guy can be a charismatic/charming billionaire with a malicious and dark, jealous, intent. I believe Hoult can teeter on that fine line between being an influential world leader and political figure while also having his own personal agenda hellbent on exacting his own vendetta.
Thing is, I do really think Eisenberg was capable of doing a more understated, dark performance, but the direction wasn't having it.
Leslie Odom Jr might be busy playing Kang soon
Please make an intimidating LL. Weve seen the smart and sophisticated Luthor, I think we all want an intimidating and sophisticated Luthor like the one from the Animated aeries
Reminds me of Loki, he wanted to be Thor but the castors seen differently.
LOL! I just started watching this and this looked and found out Jimmy was just cast too 😆
We gonna be getting a few Nando videos this week I'm assuming.
Now thid is a cast I can see!
Been following him since Skins. Hope this goes well for him
Two of the only likeable billionaires are/were Paul McCartney and Jimmy Buffet
INSPIRED choice!
@The Nando Cut Leslie Odom Jr. would be a fantastic Brainiac.
He will do a great job in the part.
FACTS love that actor. Something tells me that Superman Legacy will be a Lex Luthor movie, not a Superman movie. Which is a good thing. BvS gave us a shit Lex Luthor. We need a Smallville style Lex Luthor for Superman Legacy. The dude who played Lex on Smallville 😊 BEST LEX EVER * chef's kiss
Best lex interpretation of all time is in Young Justice imo
It would be great to introduce Lex Luthor and have Michael Rosenbaum be mistaken for him because he is bald, and I think James Gunn may be able to talk him into it
Lex Luther = Patrick Fabian (Howard Hamlin from better call Saul)
I hope James McAvoy is cast as Mr Freeze.
Odom was my frontrunner, but if true Holt is gonna kill this
There has only been ONE "already bald" actor who was perfect for Lex Luthor: Billy Zane.
Nicholas says there will be a wig of his hair for the movie
I like Nicholas Hoult but he often has this nervous, self-depreciating demeanor which seems a bit at odds with Lex Luthor's over-the-top confidence/narcism, I'll be curious to see how that plays.
Us dudes have to normalize calling other dudes handsome, as if it’s women calling other women beautiful, or guys calling other dudes jacked.
I enjoy Nicholaus Hoult’s characters. He is a handsome, charming actor.
Borderline sociopath is basically Nicholas Holt in “Skins”, sans the borderline. 😂
I would’ve preferred Bradley cooper since I like lex having a good decade on Superman. but this pick isn’t too shabby. At the very least Hoult can grow into it over the next decade
I don’t think he’s gonna be the main antagonist either
Omg I need to fix the collar on your Henley
Also idk how I’m just now seeing a this, but have any of us realized the comparisons between Clark and Lex and Woody and Buzz?? It’s mostly just the colors, but now I wanna stew on this and see if I can create anything else
Skyler just got confirmed as Jimmy. Congratulations, you're a prophet
Honestly skyler would of made a great Mcu cyclop
It should of been Billy Zane ! He’s a replica of the Lex Luthor from the Justice League cartoons
You only want him cause he's been bald
@@Chuck_ELI want him cause he was ansem seeker of darkness
I hope he gets the Warsuit at some point. I don't think we've had a live action Warsuit yet.
Also I hope he's in other DC movies. Luthor is Superman's nemesis, but he should kind of have his fingers in every pie. I'm picturing evil white Nick Fury with two eyes saying "I'm here to talk to you about the Legion of Doom initiative."
Mejor que sea vandal savage el de la iniciativa legión of doom suena demasiado parecido a lo que snyder quería hacer con su lex
This is why DC is on top of Marvel now. Marvel would have made an unqualified diversity pick and made Lex a black, female, lesbian with a sassy actor who had NO connection to the material.
DC instead picked a actor who will be bringing a "grudge" to the table after being passed over for playing Superman and Batman.
The reason why RDJ, Helmsworth, Evans and Boseman all worked is because they all identified with the character they were playing. This Lex will go down as the greatest Lex Luther of ALL TIME!! ✌🏾✌🏾
