- As an early Christmas present, I thought I'd give you guys my Howell remix for next year.
Each year I get better at my remixing and the Howell theme shows this the best. You could almost say this title sequence is Christmassy couldn't you?
If you compare this to my previous remix, there are plenty changes and fixes. This theme is just too lovely and I can't help myself when it comes to remixing it!
If I hit 800, what do you guys suggest I do for it?
Again, I hope you guys enjoy this, and despite the fact I said my last upload would probably be the last for this year, rule #1 The Doctor lies!

I remember as a kid in 1980 seeing this for the first time on "The Leisure Hive". I still remember my jaw hitting the floor in utter awe.... 40 years later in 2020 it STILL hasn't been beaten. And so glad 'my doctor' Tom Baker was the first to get it.
I always wondered how it must have been getting see and hear this opening theme for the very first time, after years and years of the Derbyshire arrangement (which is a classic in it's own right ofcourse).
I always imagined it must have been awesome! But then again, I'm a synthesizer/electronic music buff, so I'm probably a bit biased.
@@Cornughon I take it you were either not born, or too young to remember it. Sometimes I wish I could upload or save my memories with attached feeling so others could see, hear, and feel what it was like.
I'm not really into DW anymore, if even whatsoever. But I'm super jealous you got to experience this live, very jealous

The only theme to blow my mind was sylvesters. Remembrance being my fave serial. But this as a bass line alone is peng af. Im listening with a grin Tom would be jealous of. These fan remasters edits reimaginings are so fucking good. I was born in 2000 btw but got several rotd dvds as i meled 2 and half killed the 3rd replacement disk 😂
It has that adventerous punch with each tones and it is so vibrant that you can listen to this masterpiece everyday.
Listening to this puts a wide, psychotic Tom Baker-esque grin on my face.
Sounds like bliss with headphones.

They really could have chosen that or a better headshot for the intro i think, here it looks like he was caught off guard and they flashed the camera on him before they said smile.
I've just been through EVERY version of the theme from 1963 to the present day, and Howell's version is head and shoulders above every other.
My absolute fave version - I always get goosebumps when the second verse starts!
That middle 8 is lovely
Yamaha CS-80. What a version of DD's original - that opening and the **BOOM!!** at the end - all fabulous - but it's the second verse, or chorus I suppose where the notes go up octaves and I personally have never listened to a section of music that elevates my mood like that section of this theme. It's primal and it hits the same receptors in the brain that really, really good drugs do. A MASTERPIECE!
Why I love this theme so much is that it's very thumpy in a way that really puts emphasis on the beat. It's also pretty jazzy, but still mysterious at the same time.

The CS-80's resonant Highpass filter and exceptionally gooey PWM make for that super-obese bassline.
I've made the same patch on my CS-60 - the CS-80 doubles the number of oscillators, so I have to record mine twice to get the same result.

So glad I found this, I am not a who fan by any stretch but this is the best TV tune of all time and I remember it well from being a kid
The buildup and the explosion at the end was perfection
Crazy note: but the explosion at the end is a tribute to Douglas Adams, who wrote "The Hitchhikers Guide To Galaxy." The explosion is what they saw at the restaurant at the end of the universe.
Just watched the Peter Howell ”masterclass” video, and he said that they put the explosion there to discourage the tv announcer from talking over the end to announce the next program. They wanted to ”blow up the announcer” :-)
Peter Howell might not be your average pop star well known by millions, but this composition tops everything out there.
So original. Handcrafted. Fits it’s purpose extremely well. This song IS Dr. Who.

This is a brilliant treatment of this. That first opening few seconds of this just sends an electric pulse throughout my entire body. They didn't have to refresh the amazing original Delia Derbyshire creation, but Peter Howell absolutely knocked it out of the park. It retains the mystery, and to an entire generation it was the sound of Who.
EDIT some days later - Don't stop - one day you'll think you've got it right. The reality is, you did get it right ages ago, yet you're still wanting to perfect it in any way you can - I applaud that, tis a good cause. :)
Though, video wise, do pop Colin in there. He was The Doctor, whether you like it, or not! ;)

Being born in the late 70's, Peter (The First) was "my Doctor", and this was "my theme". (And boy was I shocked in the late 80's when I saw a re-run of Tom's last season and this was "his" theme too!)
I even had a cassette tape with Howell's theme looped, that I would listen to whilst going to sleep as a teen...
Derbyshire: "My theme is eternal."

Incredible timeless piece. I wonder how much Peter Howell made from this, hope he made a bucket load, deserved it. Remember seeing it for the first time myself and I was gobsmacked. Needed something spectacular though to follow the previous iconic eerie masterpiece and boy, did we ever get it.
I grew up with Tennant, so the Tenth Doctor's openings never fail to make me smile.
But despite that, THIS one is definitely my favourite. That deep, awesome bass. Those electric, futuristic melodies. And those smooth chords. Not to mention the middle eight!
This is the best ever opening and closing credits Dr. Who theme music EVER!
My first and favorite version of the theme I started watching with Peter Davison.
Brilliant I grew up in the 70's with Tom Baker through the 1980's and BBC used this for Tom's intro to 1980 I loved the rock sound it had. You did a great job.
This was the absolutely the best Doctor Who version of the theme song.😊
This version has an almost 1980s new wave/synthesizer sound to fit the era. Love it!
i wonder why
Peter used the Yamaha CS80 and ARP Odyssey amongst others to realise this, plus effected sound snippets (like the sound of a match being struck) - in a time when digital sampling was very much in its infancy. All of this was done with analogue tape.

LBSCS Productions To me, this theme doesn't fit Colin's titles. This theme is brighter and lighter. Colin's was dens and dark.

I love the vaguely electric guitar-sounding notes throughout from 0:26. I used to hate this theme (I found it as a kid through the The Veiled Leopard audio drama CD they gave out with Doctor Who Magazine) but the more I heard it, the more I grew to love it, and now it's my second favourite version of the theme! :3

Oddly enough its not an electric guitar but voice filtered through a Synthesizer called "Vocoding" there are specialized devices for this called "Vocoders".

Sorry to everyone who was expecting an 800 subs special. I've felt that perhaps should do one every 200 subscribers now because coming up with a great idea every hundred subs isn't easy! New video is in the works, just not exactly sure on its release.

Rediscovering my love for the Doctor after going back to the classic episodes. I grew up when this theme tune aired and loved it so very 80's. Tom embodied the doctor so well very eccentric and British. Such good memories! I had Dr. Who figures when I was young. Always wondered what a K9 was now I know! Long live the Doctor!

Using a Vocoder to sound like an overdriven Electric guitar but smoother is pretty genius. Howell and the Radiophonic workshop really made some magic with this version. That bass and the synth pads will always have a timeless charm, and changing the key was a nice touch too to give it that new feel
The original is of course iconic so to make a new version faces the challenge of meeting a very high standard that still stands the test of time. This is definitely the best revised version and it's worth playing loud, one of the best themes ever created.
I actually just recently uploaded a far superior remixing of this theme.
I could listen to this all night, the definitive Dr Who theme!

When I was on holiday as a kid my parents bought me the BBC Childrens Themes which Doctor Who was the first Theme on the record. I remember I couldn't wait to get home to listen to it, firstly not via a tv speaker or rubbish sound from TV recording via a portable tape machine mic which picked up every noise in the room.... but from a brand new record out of big hifi speakers!! The memory still sends shivers and I remember wondering what comes after the fading intro as I had never heard the middle 8 before as it was missing from the earlier Tom Baker theme.

I used to watch this show I also used to watch the Twilight Zone and I also used to watch the other Sci-Fi TV show that was on in this time.
