Pigpen! The best way to keep his memory alive. I was just listening to the original which of course is remarkable. That said, it’s over 20 years since Jerry passed and 45 years since Pigpen passed away. I’m happy with this present incarnation of Dead and Company.
bamadeadhead There was not one Person that could ever do this song they way the late Great Pigpen! Maybe that is why they had stopped playing it for so many years after he died. Not to knock this version down in any way, but hey Pig was one of a kind
Hands down my favorite era of the Dead was when Working Man's Dead was released. Which i guess was 70 or 71. I'm not a huge dead head but the soul and grit on that album really put it in my top 5 all time albums. Pigpen brought so much soul to the band.
I had been listening to the Dead for a coupla years ('68-'69) but they were far from my favorite band (Hendrix/Cream/Zepplin) until Workingmans Dead/American Beauty came out 1970. That's when I got on da Bus forever. Even managed to literally follow their Bus in '81 from Charlottesville Va to Landover Md when the shrooms refused to wear off. My map reading skills were shot and needed the 'perfect' way to get there. '74 Wall of Sound Tour was my peak Dead period. Amps galore & a clean-shaven Jerry...what more could you ask for?
I was at this show and being too young to see Pig back in the day this was a dream come true to hear them bust out Easy Wind. What a hot show this was!
That is wtf im talkin about!! over 300+ shows and mayor I say this eith ease, you seriously deserve to be rt where you are. playn in the band !! damm man 100 %
Whose the lone dufus who gave this thumbs down? Loved it >>>!!!! Sorry they didn't break this out earlier on the tour (my FAVORITE Pig song of all time; the WD version is amazing). I caught 5 shows (2 Citi, 2 Boulder, 2nd Fenway), so I got a good taste of what this latest journey down the Grate(ful Dead) Highway is capable of putting out as "the vibe" on these great songs that really need to be played a certain way to produce what my ears need. For that reason I've been primarily a phan of Phil's bands, over Bobby's, but loved when they would get together for TOO (all versions), The Dead (all versions), & Furthur, but when Bobby had to leave the Capitol stage on 4/25/13 I think their teaming up days were over. They played out their commitments and for FTW they even had to be coaxed into doing it. However, Mayer has been the perfect antidote for Bob Weir and Oteil has been astounding in an equally impossible position as Mayer in who they are effectively replacing. Mayer always was a phenomenal guitarist, but I'm still amazed how consistently good his explorations of this music have been. And Oteil is locked in both Weir and Mayer. Most importantly, the Bob Weir I knew and loved is back. This band has been better than advertised. Seriously, the best played Grateful Dead music in only Garcia knows when.
@@SebastianGarcia-ln4sd I think there was an element of crafting it but I don't think he sat down and wrote out this solo note for note because I've heard every Easy Wind they've done and they're all different. He's just really good, but he did probably spend time 'learning' the song...
WOW!!! Ya know the more I listen to these guy's (Dead&Co) the more I love them. I loved Furthur, those intense jams that seemed to happen almost every song, was a perfect creation. Never would I thought another new project and different creation could bring this much excitement. And to be able to hear the Dead's music again with a different sound and this good....it like I'm listening to new Dead material! Bob Weir you did it again!! 'Blown Away' We are so blessed...to hear this music brought to new light, and so grateful. Thank you so much, love you guys! And John Mayer, keep smiling and having fun like you been, this is going to be one grateful ride.
All the respect to pigpen ,jerry, et.al. saw them many times and my love endures but mayer simply kills it. He adds his own style and i love it as much but fir different reasons i guess. I must admit when mayer first came on the music scene i did not forsee this level of musicianship but the man has it.. in spades. Kudos to him. I do believe jerry and pigpen are dancin to this wherever there souls may be🙂✌peace to y'all
It's so cool watching this after the video of the soundcheck from this show, 'cause you can see what they were thinking about beforehand and pick up on some of the little cues they decided on.
Fantastic John. Well Done. And to negative vibers, stop with the he isn't as good as pig pen stuff. Bobby isn't as good as pig pen on lovelight either, so what, it's still the Dead, with songs that dig deep into your soul, and should be heard and felt. Kudos to John who probably said "why don't we play this one, this song rocks".
yeah Mayer is goated in my eyes now. Didn't sound at all like Pigpen or Jerry... really puts his own spin on it and you can tell it's Mayer seeping through while still getting that Dead feel. Good shit.
this is a song that john mayer could sing and play well since it is more blues. but why did they abandon the arrangement they used when pigpen sang it? it used to shift rhythm at the 'easy wind' part. and bob weir used to play a guitar solo during the jam too
One of my fave Dead songs, just wish they weren't so very, very far from the Workingman's groove here. And why the Hell is Bobby playing slide? His licks and soloing on the Workingman's version are some of his hottest ever - I want to hear him play like THAT (even Mayer's lick at the very end is lifted straight from Weir on Workingman's Dead - which he plays right before Pig's harmonica solo). Oh well, at least they're playing it, and it's certainly interesting to hear Mayer slap Jerry's 1980's tone all over this 1970 tune.
I know I love this song. The OG members didn't even bust it out after Pig passed. This is fun and all but in no way impressive or memorable other than for nostalgia. Imho.✌
I think bobby is handing the reigns over to john so the music wont stop after he is gone i just hope john keeps playin dead songs for a very long time i know he's not jerry but the music must live on!!!
good to see this song back in the fold...but this version is sad. John is a good player but NOBODY can play like Jerry did back then...NOBODY. I wouldn't pay a dime to see Dead and Co.
I feel like this needs Phil Lesh in the mix to make it for my taste. Those bass lines are integral part of song. They do a very nice job though even without him. Just not the same.
Just go over and watch the version from Callbration 1970, crappy video yes, but the music is out in stratosphere , its so fucking good, it MOVES me in ways this version just doesnt come near to doing . This is ok, its perfectly well played , nice solo and Mayer has a decent voice, but it lacks that certain something... the sheer soul and blues chops injected into the song by Jerry and Pigpen . You simply cant replicate that and this band comes nowhere near doing so and sadly, it never really will.
There was a very good reason why The Grateful Dead dropped this from their repertoire. Let sleeping dogs lie. Not just anyone can cover this song. Im no hater but this is sad and pretty lifeless indeed.
Look at JM with his cute little white hipster watch and jumpin' all over that stage. The Dead are just chilin' as usual. He's like a puppy in a kennel with a bunch of older dogs. I'm just shocked they aren't getting annoyed and snapping at him!
Further evidence why I can't dig Mayer playing Dead tunes. His voice is grating and his guitar playing has no soul. Why would they pick a pop star who clearly enjoys people looking at him a bit too much with his posturing little dances and moves.

John nice!!!!! He sure does. LIKE A GLOVE!!!

I really appreciate how this isint just John Mayer emulating Jerry, he's doing the best (and most respectful) thing possible imo.
Kane Sanders this is a pigpen song tho ha he’s kinda like both of them combined but WAY slimmer

Sam Crocker Doesn't it seem like they dummied down the transition to the chorus to make it easier compared to that rehearsal video?

Mayer does Pigpen songs a lot better than I thought he would. He’s still not in the same stratosphere, but it’s an admirable attempt.
