手技 TEWAZA 「房州うちわ」 BOSHU Uchiwa (fans)／伝統工芸 青山スクエア Japan traditional crafts Aoyama Square

関東でうちわ作りが始ったのは江戸時代です。当時房州はうちわの材料となる竹の産地でした。房州でのうちわ作りは明治10年ごろからといわれており、明治17年（1884年）には安房郡の一大物産として生産されていたとのことです。京うちわ、丸亀うちわとともに日本三大うちわのひとつとして、南房州で受け継がれています。
Developed and nurtured in the southern part of the Boso Peninsula, Boshu-uchiwa or round fan is known as one of the three most favored uchiwa in Japan, along with Kyo and Marugame fans. Unlike the sashi-e handled Kyo uchiwa (a handle separately crafted and attached to the ribs) and the hira-e (flat) handled Marugame-uchiwa, Boshu-uchiwa is a maru-e (round) handled fan, whose ribs are made of a bamboo called "medake." Boshu fans are very popular for their durability and subtle beanty of the bamboo rids exposed in the lower part which is not covered with washi paper.
