Singing, dancing, and playing at the same time? It’s called showmanship.

The two dancers here are Mai (light blue costume) and Nenne (orange). And yes, Nenne was the one doing the dueling keyboard backpacks with Oreo on Hunting Summer.
I'm so glad Home Gnome requested this one, and I'm happy that you've been having fun getting to know all these different sides to Gacharic Spin!

Oreo was specifically brought in as the vocal replacement to Armmy she just happened to be really really good at the keys as well.
If you want to see Gachapin in the states keep your eye on anime expos since they are the ones that will usually bring them to the states.

I'm not sure that's quite correct about Oreo, she had been a live support keyboardist for the band for a while when Armmmy was still in the group, there are photos and live clips out there of the band with Oreo on keys and Armmmy on vocals. That said I'm really not 100% sure, there's no doubt her singing abilities made her an attractive addition from the bands perspective.

@@ckiemnstr345 I've seen one picture of Oreo with the group while Armmy was there. I think I saw old fancam footage at some point too. Oreo played support keyboards for live shows from time to time, then joined them on their Gachapinch tour early in 2012. Oreo didn't officially join the band until after the tour was finished.
From some translated interviews, it seems like the band asked Oreo to join earlier on, but Oreo initially declined. After EU-PHORIA ended, Oreo said she wasn't sure if she'd want to be in a band anymore.

It's funny you mention AKB48. Back in 2012, Hana, Koga, and Tomo-zo were hired to help teach some of the girls how to play instruments for the single "Give Me Five". In 2020, GS played as the backing band when two of the members of AKB48 had a solo concert.
I think the band+dancers era of Gacharic Spin was definitely idol-inspired. Bright, colorful and fun!

What an amazing choice by Home Gnome! I was so addicted to this video in 2016/2017 when I got it on the bonus DVD to KAKUHEN, so nice to see it getting some more of the appreciation it deserves! Truly one of the most versatile, original, and talented bands currently going.
It's something I've thought ever since I discovered them, but I just don't understand why they aren't world-wide superstars. I mean what more is required? It can't be more talent right? It can't be more effort or passion right? What's the missing ingredient? This question continues to challenge me.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 2 роки тому +3

I am not sure what's the "missing ingredient", but just like some others here are saying a lot of their music doesn't grab me personally. For example, this song ガンバンバダンサー is not really my thing. I did enjoy the video though.
MindSet did grab me last year and it's probably my favourite track I have heard last year and it made me preorder their newest album, buy their previous one and buy their lastest bluray. But all in all most of their music is not for me. That doesn't mean that it's bad, but in general it's a bit too poppy for my tastes. I do think they are fun to watch though as I love how much fun they seem to have even though I am not always down for their upbeat crazyness depending on the day. But I probably never would have given them a proper look if it wasn't for MindSet last year.
I will most likely continue to buy their stuff and keep ordering their livestreams on ZAIKO though even though it's not something I listen to a lot.
I do think they deserve to be more well known, but I think their extremely upbeat sillyness is probably not something that jives with a lot of Western audiences. I don't think a lot of people in the West look at talent or passion unfortunately. The costumes most Japanese bands wear are probably also a turnoff for a lot of Western audiences, at least they are not for me even though I don't mind them wearing them if they like the astethic.
Most people don't get exposed to Japanese music or don't try to listen to it even if they are with the exception of Intro/Outro Anime songs for the niche that watches Anime. At least not here in Europe, I assume it's the same in the US. Hell, I wasn't really aware of most J-Rock/J-Metal bands until a year ago when Band-Maid made me dive in. The only Japanese bands I was aware of and listened to were metal bands Sigh, Funeral Moth and Coffins. I also bought some Senri Kawaguchi albums a couple of years ago. I was aware of Maximum The Hormone and Babymetal, but never gave them a listen. I honestly think Babymetal and what we can see from J-Pop (and K-Pop) in general might be why people get misconceptions about what J-Rock and J-Metal bands can be. They might think all bands are like that and that's great if you love that type of music and spectacle, but might be a turnoff if you don't.
I don't know how well known they are in Japan, but being around for as long as they have, I assume they are at least doing ok.
As a last thing that I noticed.
Hana and Oreo (but especially Hana) are starting to sing out of tune on some of their newer stuff and I noticed it wasn't the case when I listen to older stuff. I am honestly worried Hana has screamed her voice to pieces as her screams don't sound that they are done in a good "healthy" way. It's fine when she sings in her lower range, but when she goes up it's sometimes very distracting for me. I don't hear it in their Doll$Boxx releases, so I think it's a recent thing. I even notice it on their album newest release, so it's not only live. I really hope she didn't kill her voice because in those older videos she sounds really good.

@@MaartenT Thank you for your detailed thoughts, it's much appreciated!
I suspect that your thought that their "upbeat craziness" may be off-putting to some Western audiences, especially rock/metal fans who tend to prefer their music and artists dour/grim/serious, is probably true. Although that said they've toned that aspect down the last few years. They still have fun and they still dress somewhat brightly, but they don't have the totally insane costumes any more (whilst probably overall for the best, I do miss the burger suit!).
They are decently popular in Japan, not a stadium filler band but well known and highly respected, especially in musical circles.
Regarding Hana + Oreo's pitching, I'd have to disagree in general. Are they always perfect? Absolutely not, they are humans! Are they extremely good? Absolutely! I think what you might be picking up on with Hana is there are a few notes between about E5 and G5 that she sometimes goes for with a mix voice when perhaps sometimes, depending on the day, she could consider settling for a flip to head voice. It wouldn't sound as powerful, but it'd be so much easier to pull off, especially if you're already a bit tired. I'd also disagree regarding her screams sounding unhealthy, whilst I'm no screaming production technique expert they sound like low pressure, wide embrochure, false chord screams which, as far as my understanding goes, is how they should be done, I'm very open to being corrected on that though as not an area of particular expertise for myself! Finally I'd be very curious to know what on the new album you thought sounded out of tune? I'm very sensitive to pitching and as yet not noticed any pitchiness myself on that album, I could well have missed something though!
Thanks again for the great comment and discussion!

@@homegnome2429 We do run into each other a lot! Whilst it's nice to get to know other fans it sometimes feels like it's only me, you, and about a half dozen others out there consistently pushing for this band to get the attention it deserves, which plays into the discussion me and Maarten have been having. Oh well, we'll keep on pushing, once the magic of Gacha has been understood I don't see how there's any possible turning back from the path, even if it's a sparsely populated one it's still worth it.

@@nanakakitano9724 Yes, when I first started pushing requests with various reactors, I suppose I hoped that this would help to get them seen by a wider audience, but considering the general number of views for a vid compared to the number of subscibers it seems like by far the majority of people will only watch selective bands anyway, and so aren't really picking up new things to listen to.
Whereas, I pick a small number of reactors that I enjoy and respect and then watch pretty much everything they release and from time to time pick up something new I can get into.
For right now I'm happy enough to enjoy getting these reactions shared, even if it's within a fairly small group of die-hard fans, and if it has a marginal impact on attracting new fans then that's great too.

Oreo was hanging out because she and tomo played together in their previous band and Oreo got to play a few songs.
When armmy disappeared they were left hanging. Hana wrote all the songs and has a great voice so no problem on lead vocals but they needed someone to fill Hana’s backup position. Tomo could do the cute stuff wasn’t going to be harmonizing anytime soon and koga is tone deaf so no go there.
Now personally I’m not a big fan of Oreo’s voice but they were in a bind and Oreo does have a rather amazing ability to harmonize with Hana.
    Plus we get keyboards…yeah..
I’m not sure hana would have thought that having to write every song with a keyboard part was a plus.
Btw I do think that this is one of the best examples of Oreo’s singing especially in the scating and shortly after the real rocker chick voice comes through. Unfortunately we find out the result of Oreo puting her voice out there, just for a few lines, her voice cracks as she attempts to say thank you.
The fact that she grabs her throat and gives that silly grin let’s us know they she also knows that this is not her new jam..

I don't know if they did it because they were the two members of the band who were interchangeable when it came to playing the keyboards, but you may have noticed that both Nenne and Oreo are wearing name badges. You can see them clearly at 6:27.
"Nenne" is written in Hiragana (ねんね), and "Oreo Reona" is written in Katakana (オレオレオナ) 🙂

Late as usual to the comments thread, but thank you Wave Potter for posting this. This is an amazing performance by a -- and I don't use his term lightly -- legendary band. They put on an epic show, no matter what their lineup is. And this clip is no exception. That unison with Nenne and Oreo is beyond words. It feels like an improvisation, but I can tell you musician to musician it likely took lots of practice. I say "legendary" because of their history of set back, regroup, and rebound for most of their existence. The current version with yuri and Angie is no less stellar, but it's perhaps all the more remarkable for having the longest period with the same band members going into just its fourth year.
