- This is the video I never wanted, or thought I would have to make. My van is gonna cost so much to fix that I'd be a fool to even try. Today, I retell that story.

I'm Matt and this is my channel - The Atypical Workshop. I was diagnosed with Autism in early 2020 and after initially struggling to come to terms with my #neurodiversity, I've since learned to embrace it. My alternative brain wiring allows me to see things from completely different perspectives, and to think of unique solutions that others would likely miss. The name 'Atypical Workshop' came about through the fusion of two very different themes:
During lockdown, while teaching myself carpentry, I also began watching Atypical (Netflix). The show both helped me to understand what I was going through, and reminded me of how capable I am. On 'The Atypical Workshop' I aim to use my unique skill set to both overcome the challenges I face and provide entertaining and informative content.

My van has suffered the same rot issues!.... Not only is there a inner and outer sill, there are two stiffener panels between the two.... Mine has major rot in all these panels.... But, we've elected to rebuild!.... Only the outer sill is available as a panel, we've had to fabricate all the rest..... My welder / fabricator is a top quality chap who also happens to be my son 😊😀
During my MOT the mechanic had a look at the sills - although nothing major, he expects they’ll need some work next time round. I guess the problem is that these sills rust from the inside? I’m half tempted to replace the entire sill on each side before it gets bad, and treat the metal on both the new sills and the chassis before welding them on. Is your son a welder by trade? Im not yet sure if I’ll attempt this work myself or have it done by someone else
@@AtypicalWorkshop The full outer sill panel fits quite well, if you can get away with just replacing that and treat the inner sill and the stiffeners from the inside that would be great..... My lad is a welder / fabricator but is doing my rust repairs coz it's for me.... He's into custom fabrication, and TIG welded roll cages for competition cars.... If you go for this yourself, it's a pretty big job but easily achievable with your application of skills... Assuming you have a decent welder 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to reply again :) Yeah that’s what I meant! Replace outer sills. There’s a couple of well put together UA-cam videos of someone doing exactly this in the same connect as mine (ua-cam.com/video/m2jQ5eCLfyE/v-deo.html). My welder is a Clarke gasless mig. Lower end of the market, but not the cheapest one either. I think it’s up to the task but I’ll do some research. Anyhow, got plenty to get done before I think about doing the sills. Leaks galore currently, plus the van won’t start via ignition, but I’ve figured that one out - corrosion somewhere on the cable between the battery and the starter solenoid. Opted to replace the whole cable since the battery end of it has damage too. Just waiting for Evri to deliver it now ⏱️
I am so sorry that you may lose your van. You have taught me so much over the months. Noticed you got a hair cut. When I have had stressful times, I have gotten haircuts. Some I did myself with not such great results. Hope you can salvage most of your work. Good luck with finding a new van. I will keep watching.
I’m glad you’ve learned so much! I did :) I like having my hair long, but not so much when it gets greasy from building/carpentry etc and gets in the way. 🤞most of it should be easy to install in another van, yes :)

My connect vans both had the same engine issue a couple off months after esch other then i had the same issues with the ford focus both off them so i bought my wofe a skoda octavia rs and myself a vw caddy
How do you find the caddy? If I was less far along with the conversion I’d be more open to looking at other replacement vans, but since it’s so complete my best option is likely finding another mk1 connect!

The issue with i had with both of my connect vans was an engine falure. The said the engine that is laying in the vans is the worst engine ever.
I have the vw caddy now for two weeks and its doing his job, its a newer one so i hope that i can use it for the upcoming years now.
You could get a really good condition one for 2 grand . Its shit to see it go but id rather just buy a better one an start again with the conversion.. ul be able to take parts off it too .

its for the best it goes as you dont have a clue , if you cannot afford a better van , buy a bike . you needed that hair cut too
