I’m Matt, and this is my channel - The Atypical Workshop. I was diagnosed with Autism in early 2020 and after initially struggling to come to terms with my #neurodiversity, I’ve since learned to embrace it. My alternative brain wiring allows me to see things from completely different perspectives and to think of unique solutions that others might miss. The name ‘Atypical Workshop’ came about through the fusion of two very different themes:
During lockdown, while teaching myself carpentry, I also began watching Atypical (Netflix). The show both helped me to understand what I was going through and reminded me of how capable I am. On The Atypical Workshop, I aim to use my unique skill set to both overcome the challenges I face and provide entertaining and informative content.

      Thank you! Yeah I’m pretty pleased overall 👍 I think I paid about £60 for the pair of sills - unfortunately the eBay listing has expired and they were bought in dans account - I can ask him to look tomorrow. Paint: (2 x grey hi-build primer cans, 1 x grey stonechip can, 2 x colour matched metallic base coat cans, 1 x super gloss lacquer can. I paid about £120 for all of that, but that should be more than enough, since the passenger side which is yet to be sprayed will require less paint. You’ll want some filler, and some 180 grit sand paper to smooth it back too. Hope this helps! Matt

    Hey, I'm going to be starting a Connect conversion in the coming months, love the detail and work you put into you videos, well done Sir : ) ...Cant wait to see the camper finished ......Do you still think the Connect is a good choice for a mini camper van conversion?

    • @AtypicalWorkshop
      @AtypicalWorkshop 22 дні тому

      I would say size wise the t230 is an excellent choice. Unfortunately the newest version of the mk1 is now 12 years out - mine is 15. Expect work to fix rust every year. If you know your way around the mechanical side and have time to do some welding or are happy to pay someone, go for it. If not, I’d go for something newer. It’s a shame that the mk2 connect doesn’t come in the high roof version like mine, but if that’s not an issue, they’re a decent size.

    • @SillyMonkeys
      @SillyMonkeys 22 дні тому

      @@AtypicalWorkshop hey, yes ,size is what attracts me , you can sit in the back, without hitting your head off the roof, i dont know another good option for a van this size., and yes, why didn't Ford make a high roof version of the next model , there is a 2024 connect now, which looks nice, but i dont think there is a high roof version of that either : ( .... I'm currently building a workshop, hopefully be finished by September, and then I'm going to buy one, some of the police ones come up an Ebay occasionally, usually pretty mint, but a little expensive, although maybe saves work / money, down the line .

    Cool! I decided on the same design as you, for mostly the same reasons. It's weird I haven't seen it around more often. In the end I ran into issues with transporting bikes though; the width of the vehicle meant I needed to take apart the bike to transport it, which wouldn't do for me. Instead I bought a bunch of euronorm boxes, which fit perfectly in several different configurations, depending on what I want to do with the van that day or weekend. It's a bit of a compromise, but a modular build is great to figure out what I actually need. Trying to practice KISS is always a challenge. I'm super happy to see 'my' original idea come into being with your build!

    • @AtypicalWorkshop
      @AtypicalWorkshop Місяць тому

      Great minds think alike! Perhaps we should coin it ‘the Ricktypical Sliding Bed’ 😂 What are euronorm boxes? I’ve never heard of them

    • @RickMeijer
      @RickMeijer Місяць тому

      @@AtypicalWorkshop euronorm boxes are a type of box designed around standard pallet size. They usually come in the sizes 60x40, 40x30, 30x20. Every box can fit two boxes of a smaller size on it. Since most vans are built around pallets, this results in a near-perfect fit, with multiple configurations possible. A setup like yours, for example can be achived by placing three 60x40 boxes in the back, and two in the front. When it's time for bed you could rotate them to have a 180x80 platform. It's a bit of a faff, but great for finding out what works for you. Besides: I can build a small cabinet by stacking boxes. I can take out a box and use it as a portable seat, or fill up with groceries. If I'm going on a bike trip I can have a bench on the left- and right side of the car, leaving the middle open to transport my bike. If I'm bringing my girlfriend for a longer trip it's easy to just have the whole bottom be made of crates, creating a huge storage space. And so on.

    Thanks a lot for this awesome guide! Question: How did you make/get the PVC blocks?

      I’m glad it was useful! I think I’ve got some footage somewhere of how I made them that I forgot about. I’ll have a look later and get back to you. Give me a nudge this evening if you don’t hear back as I might forget 😂

    I know it's been a while for you, but time doesn't exist on the internet. What a fantastic resource, thank you! I was planning to just attach the camera to the rear light wire, but your solution seems a bit less firehazardy.

      Cheers Rick, I appreciate the kind words even after all this time (or no time 😁). I found it to be a worthwhile time investment once I’d figured out which wire went where! It’s a more future-proofed solution too - if it fails, the modification is fairly accessible instead of being hidden behind the van conversion

      @@AtypicalWorkshop I’m really enjoying your videos. You’re really thorough. Hope you’re still at it (building stuff, that is), you seem to have a knack for it. Finished the rear cam yesterday, partly thanks to you!

      @@RickMeijer Great news! I'm very much building stuff still, just haven't had the time to do much on my van for ages. I made good progress towards the end of last summer and filmed a bunch but the weather turned before I was done, so there's a fair bit more to make and film, and a whole lot more to edit! I also had to replace my sills in november in time for mot (also filmed and edited, just not yet released), so there's a fair amount in the pipeline, just hopefully sooner rather than later haha

    Firstly i personally wouldn't use timber on a van floor it has no R rating 🤔 Paint with truck bed paint after thoroughly cleaning and treating any rust spots the cover with the insulation boards you would use under a concrete slab ,it has a very high compression rating, simply cut to size and glue to the floor with sikoflex ,then cover with 8mm ply again stuck with sikoflex ,this way you get No thermal bridging 😊 Plus you can drive over that insulation board with ya van and it wont compress so your floor will always remain flat,unlike the normal kingspan which over time will sag slightly when walked on 😊

      @AtypicalWorkshop 6 місяців тому

      Some good points here! In many ways this would be superior to what I’ve done, but I wanted to be able to remove the floor without any hassle, so gluing everything down wasn’t an option 👍

    at 06:40, when you used acetone to clean off the old silicone etc, did it not take the top layer of paint off as well?

    • @AtypicalWorkshop
      @AtypicalWorkshop 10 місяців тому

      Don’t quote me on this, but I think that the lacquer on the paint does a sufficient job at protecting it. I tried less aggressive stuff like white spirit first but it didn’t do much. Sorry for the late response, hope that’s helpful :)

    Great video, such attention to detail! I'm thinking of just rivet nutting my ply ceiling to the van metal roof beams; do you think this could be a bad idea? Thanks

    Thank you for your video, gave some inspiration, so much so, i bought a genuine set off ebay, followed your instructions and everything fitted, took me ages to get it to work because i didnt out a fuse in 56 or 57 i think, soon as i did that, perfect. Things i woukd have done differently doing it again, save metal clips from behind actual switch, connect plug from loom through the door first, i had everything set up but plug doesnt fit through door, plug first, wires through door. But again, without your video, i woukdnt have even tried it so thank you 👏👏👏
