2010 Subaru Forester (3rd Gen) - How to replace the low beam headlight bulb (and a 2020 prediction!)

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 19 сер 2024
  • In this video I will be showing you how to replace both the drivers side and passenger side low beam headlamp bulb on a 2010 Subaru Forester.
Where you access the bulb is the same on both sides, behind the head light assembly.
However, in order to be able to remove the passenger side, you have to remove a part.
    Watch and learn!
Also, during the video I stated that I like to change both bulbs at the same time.
I was more focused on what I was doing at the moment. What I meant to say is that I am changing both bulbs this time because these are supposed to be brighter.
    My apologies!

This post is to help anybody out that has their low beams just go out all of a sudden. I was taking my wife to work one morning and when I turned the lights on they came in for a split second and both went out. Since they both went out simultaneously I thought it was a fuse or relay. I checked them and they were good. I checked the bulbs and the filaments were intact. I went on UA-cam and found there were several other things it could be, so I drove around for a month with only high beams till I could save enough to take it to the dealer to have it diagnosed and fixed. Skip to yesterday. I stopped by the dealer and told them the issue but decided to go ahead and buy some stock Subaru headlights. Well, it totally fixed the problem. Apparently, the aftermarket bulbs have some electronic parts in the housing, so the bulb can look fine but be gone. So, replace the bulbs first. Cheap 40 dollar fix.

You made it look easy but getting the plastic caps off my 13 year old vehicle was a bit of work. I had to tap the fins with a screwdriver and mallet, and use wide grips to get them loose enough to twist manually. I also found the second headlight used a different connector than the first which used the button type that you showed. The other one was an odd side-snap connector type.
Then again, getting the caps back on was not trivial. They have four grooves at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. You need to line them up and snap it on before attempting to screw it back the quarter turn. Anyway, thanks for the video. Saved me $90 or so.

I try and reply to all comments, no matter how old the video.
      Glad you came here!
As for what you described, you could be dealing with a blown fuse. Or both bulbs could have gone out at the same time.
I would try and replace the bulbs first. It’s inexpensive and could be the culprit.
If that doesn’t work, try changing out the fuse.
Your owners manual should have a page that shows you all the fuses. Check which one is for the low beams and replace it.
Let me know how it goes!

@@DIYTutorialGuy Sir, really saved the day on this one! I’m not super handy so am cautious, especially with my wife’s car, and needed to replace before doing some night driving and the dealer was already closed. The housing button on this was the trick. Replacement in this case was inside the waterproof case but on the passenger side, so needed to remove the air (turbo) intake manifold but then had plenty of room to work. Please keep these videos up, especially with Subarus staying on the road as long as they do.

As for your statement feeling good about 2020, in order for me not to feel good at that time I would have needed a time machine. I still feel good about it. We have a lot of work ahead us both on individual and societal levels, but feeling bad or down about it only compounds the situation.
People can look at the situation and only focus on how bad it is and can be, or they can remain positive and focus on what they are going to do to get through the situation with the best possible outcomes.
I choose the latter, that’s all.
I hope you stay healthy through this.
