This was cute, clever and refreshingly unique! Thank you so much for sharing this, Mr. Stanchfield!! I've been studying animation history off and on for nearly 40 years and I've never heard of these Sam Bassett cartoons! It started a bit slow, but once I gave it a chance with some time, and once I heard some snappy and bold dialog, I found it engaging! I like how it ends; it definitely has heart and one can kind of sympathize with the characters. Again, I like how the filmmakers try very well to find an original twist on the short cartoon narrative format!
Pretty competently produced - if this were five years earlier! By '63 there were many far superior shows on TV (Beany and Cecil, Alvin, and Deputy Dawg among others)
"You get him to make love to you, and I'll grab him" - not a line I ever thought I'd hear in a cartoon. Good thing Sam's definition of "making love" is evidently milder than most people's!
Around 26 HOUND FOR HIRE cartoons appear to have been made. I had once seen a filmography of cartoons produced by Zagreb listed online, with 26 of these. (They also had the Popeyes they did, labeled "Popaj" I and II) - ABC Films syndicated the series in 1969 with 26 episodes listed
01 - The Case of the Speechless Senator (SLUÄŒAJ SENATORA KOJI NIJE MOGAO GOVORITI) 02 - The Case of the Mixed-Up Magician (SLUÄŒAJ ZBUNJENOG ÄŒAROBNJAKA) 03 - [Fast Snail Case] (SLUÄŒAJ BRZOG PUŽA) 04 - [Case of a Madman with a Mustache] (SLUÄŒAJ LUÄAKA S BRKOVIMA) 05 - The Case of the Lazy Lion (SLUÄŒAJ LIJENOG LAVA) 06 - [Rocket Failure Case] (SLUÄŒAJ NEUSPJELE RAKETE) 07 - The Case of the Nervous Sheriff (SLUÄŒAJ NERVOZNOG Å ERIFA) 08 - The Case of the Ugly Deer (SLUÄŒAJ RUŽNE KOÅ UTE) 09 - The Case of the Stolen Locomotive (SLUÄŒAJ UKRADENE LOKOMOTIVE) 10 - [Case of a Scared Matador] (SLUÄŒAJ UPLAÅ ENOG MATADORA) 11 - [The Case of the Stupid Earth Squirrel] (SLUÄŒAJ BUDALASTE ZEMNE VJEVERICE) 12 - [How-Hoo-Hee Case] (SLUÄŒAJ HOW-HOO-HEE-JA) 13 - The Case of the Eggless Hen (SLUÄŒAJ KOKOÅ KE KOJA NIJE MOGLA SNIJETI JAJE) 14 - The Case of the Kangeroo Kid (SLUÄŒAJ MLADOG KLOKANA) 15 - The Case of the Soprano Tuba (SLUÄŒAJ SOPRANO TUBE) 16 - The Case of the Shy Private Eye (SLUÄŒAJ PLAÅ LJIVOG PRIVATNOG DETEKTIVA) 17 - [Case of Great Theft of Hat] (SLUÄŒAJ VELIKE KRAÄE Å EÅ IRA) 18 - [Sleeping Boxer Case] (SLUÄŒAJ POSPANOG BOKSERA) 19 - The Case of the Lost Message (SLUÄŒAJ IZGUBLJENE PORUKE) 20 - The Case of the Unhappy Ghost (SLUÄŒAJ NESRETNOG DUHA) 21 - [Case of a Sleepy Night Guard] (SLUÄŒAJ POSPANOG NOĆNOG ÄŒUVARA) 22 - [The Bald Shepherd Case] (SLUÄŒAJ ĆELAVOG OVÄŒARA) 23 - The Case of the Gloomy Gondolier (SLUÄŒAJ TUŽNOG GONDOLIJERA) 24 - The Case of the Unfinished Melody (SLUÄŒAJ NEDOVRÅ ENE MELODIJE) 25 - [Wicked Mouse Case] (SLUÄŒAJ OPAKOG MIÅ A) 26 - [Curious Cat Case] (SLUÄŒAJ RADOZNALE MAÄŒKE) Yes 26 have been documented and only now 10 (used to be 9) are available, missing ones with a confirmed english dub are “The Case of The Stolen Locomotive” (9), “The Case of The Shy Private Eye” 16, and “The Case of The Unfinished Melody” (24), I found this whole list in a txt document online somewhere and don’t know where it went back in 2020something. Been a big fan of the weird jank and eurohumor this series offers and have been doing my best to try and study it. Hope this helps
Phil Davis, an Aussie I think who also did one of the first ever adult comedy cartoons (supposedly) Astromutts with the same studio, though that has yet to be released besides a few frames (but is in the same style as this, plus english dubbed)
It feels weird watching something having a 1940's/early 50's cartoon style with Dingo Pictures levels of limited animation.
Or the Calimero-like Hanna-Barbanime feel.
At least it has proper voice actors.
This was cute, clever and refreshingly unique!

You could say it was a nice try.

0:26 1:47 2:23 2:52 This underrated classic gag of what they say every time the boat paddle breaks.

I suppose those Popeyes were handled by Gene Deitch at Zagreb.
According to the Ranko Munitić's book, Zagreb film did the animation for this series. Idk who directed this btw
Sorta wonder if Dusan Vukotic was involved on these.

All the Sam Basset cartoons I've seen are pretty weird. They're very interesting but I can't decide if I like them or not.
Still better than anything sssniperwolf puts out
Yugoslavians make good animators.
This looks familiar! What animation studio made this?
What the - - ??? Where did THIS come from?
