  • A 1956 Lantz cartoon, directed by Alex Lovy. I think it's a pretty fun one, and clearly influenced timing-wise by Avery's tenure at the studio. This is a 35mm IB Technicolor print, with the soundtrack exposed for your interest, just like they're scanned!

i haven't seen enough lantz cartoons to have a say in this, but something about the mid-50s lantz cartoons (that i've seen) hit different. imaginative and manic in a way that the bigger, nicer studios weren't. unpolished compared to the decade's best looney tunes, but unique! convict concierto has been a hidden favorite of mine for a bit, and that's on top of the tex shorts.

It probably owes to the fact Lantz pretty much allowed Directors to do whatever they wanted in their shorts, arguably more than what the brass of Warner allowed. Most of the shorts unique and manic nature in the mid-50s is also because of Tex Avery. His brief return left an influence on practically everyone at Lantz, and gags of his could still be seen in shorts up until the studio’s end. I’d like to think that between Don Patterson, Tex Avery, and those who were influenced thereafter, the mid-50s could be seen as a second golden age for Lantz’s studio, right up there with the Dick Lundy period of the late 40s.

seeing a lantz cartoon in this "5:4 esque" aspect ratio looks really nice, the restoration metv aired a couple months ago looks good too

One of the best Avery-esque animated shorts Walter Lantz has produced in the 1950s compared to other Lovy-directed shorts. In the era timeline of Lantz' studio, besides Disney Legend Dick Lundy helping to direct shorts from the 40s, Two animators helped working on these shorts in the 50s were MGM Tex Avery legends from the 40s.

note that every shot is safe for a 1.19:1 aspect ratio. it was around this time universal was touting the lantz cartunes were suitable to also be screened in scope! it would look ugly, but evidently, they didn't care.

Can you guess which UPA character was hugely popular around this time?
