After the car crash took his arm, Rick Allen came back to the studio where the band had been recording. Nobody ever talked about replacing him or what they were going to do. They were just happy he was back and he'd just go into a room by himself....and spent his days figuring out how he could drum with one arm - setting up to drum with his feet, and practicing day after day. The band admits now, they were just happy he was doing something, but in the back of their minds of course he could never do what he once did. One day he called them into the room and proceeded to play one of their hits in their entirety on his new setup using his feet. By the end all of them were in tears.
One of my ex firefighter colleagues in Sheffield was a massive Def Leppard fan, he was in charge of the first fire appliance on scene at Ricks accident. He was almost in tears when they cut him out of the wreckage but elated that he mastered the art of one arm drumming.
