Excellent instructions. Save me lots of money from buying icloud storage! My almost 10-year-old Synology NAS, DS 211j, still works for the backup - amazing. thank you.
I'll definitely have to give this a try. I've got a DS416j myself, and it's been fantastic for keeping my PC data backed up. Also great for sharing files between devices. ...In hindsight, I'm not sure why I *haven't* also backed up photos/videos from my phone yet.
Haha right? I use a couple cloud backup solutions just to have last resort raw dumps, but having them locally is a lot easier. Especially when I need them for videos or whatnot.
Nice tutorial Mr. EposVox! I've had my synology nas for a few months now and I truly recommend every household to get one because of the various capabilities and low cost compared to an actual server.
great tool, how do i get this app to carry on uploading the photos/videos from my phone to my nas even if/after the app is closed on the phone, it seems to stop uploading until i open the app back up?
I set this up, and have the same problem I had when I tried backup with DS Photo. This only works when the phone is unlocked and the app is running, which basically means my backup will never finish. I have 10,000 photos to back up and if it's not running while at idle basically makes this a not very useful solution.
Hi thanks for your great video. a bit too short but great anyway. i think that the key word here would be SYNC. That means of course upload the photos to the NAS but at the same time delete them when it's done. Google photos does this perfectly and send the photos to the iphone photo thrash once it has been uploaded. does ds file does the same or do you have to do the deletion manually.
BTW "Sync" means having a copy in both places, not delete the local. Nitpicky, but that's quite literally the definition so worth mentioning. They give you a button to delete all backed up photos/videos as it does them, so that's nice, but doesn't do it automatically.
Defiently cool. I must admit, that for the ease of use. I sold my soul to google photos, and they now store all my photos, (I even have an unlimited dataplan). Only "problem" is that google compress the images if I want to have unlimited storage.. no problem for me, I don't think their compression is that aggressive (if they haven't told me they compressed them, I wouldn't know). Anyway the photo from my phone don't need to be 100% original quality anywho. I do like the Synology service though, but in case everything I own burn down, google got my photos (and my soul)... (yeah I know, the disadvantages too)
I use Google photos extensively. They don't compress for the unlimited storage option so long as you stay within their stipulated limits of 16MP and 1080p. They only compress when you upload higher MP counts or 4K videos. The unlimited option is limited by sizes so people don't start to dump 25MB, 50MB RAW files online unless one opts to pay for that service of storing originals. support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791?hl=en
DSPhoto already as the possibility to do that. As soon as there an internet connection, and if there is any new photo on the phone or tablet, it immediately uploads to the NAS
I can only pick DCIM folder on the SD location. Mmy default photo/video storage is SD, but videos in 60fps are auto saved on Phone storage & won't be backed up in this case...
You mention almost exclusive about backing up photos, photos, photos, in this short explanation. However, there is no mention about backing up videos, especially 4K videos. Videos are more space intensive then just photos. The DS File also indicates no support for videos (or other files for that matter... PDF, spreadsheets, etc.) only photos. Synology should start to support video data as well as other data. DS file should have checkable options as to what sort of data to back up from the device. ...photos, video, data files, etc. I also carry around many PDF references as well as spreadsheets, RTF, DOC files.
It does videos. There's a basic checkbox at the bottom to "ignore videos" that I mentioned, but otherwise it backs them up. But yes I agree that it'd be a solid idea to do JUST photos in the DS Photos app and in this one to let you choose all file types to back up. :)
I just now checked this function in the DS File and see that you can in fact back up all data. You can choose the DCIM folder only, or all folders. It's just Synology lays out the interface which is not intuitive up front what can be done. One needs to read through each item as to what can be done. Anyway, was not aware of this function so Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I have a Synology DS1515 starting to age, but am starting to concurrently use QNAP's TS-653B. The advantage of this device is that it can be used as a DAS and NAS concurrently via a USB-C Quick Access connection on the front panel.
Very informative and well presented video! Question: Once my pictures and videos are uploaded via WiFi to the Synology NAS and “most” deleted from my iPhone or iPad, how can I access those pics or videos “temporarily” to show one of them (now only on my NAS) to someone else for just a quick view? Thank you for your videos and sharing your knowledge and expertise!!!
I also have researching solution for this kind backup, do u have any solution for below requirement ? a) Can just backup new photo after full photo backup from iphone to synology ? b) I maybe delete some photos in iphone but such photos has been backup to synology in previous backup tasks, can be delete such photos in synology automatically on next backup ?
for data limit reasons. for example i have a 10gb limit on my cell phone plan if i did 1 4k video that could easily use that entire 10gb just transfering it if i had instant backup enabled and i was not on wifi. now instant backup and wifi upload only enabled is fine
can't get this to do background upload. already enabled background processes in settings and gave this app permissions. the app keeps signing me out everytime i quit it. i have to manually open the app, log in, click on photos backup and only then will it backup.
Hi, I used to save my photos via Onedrive in the past. I bought Synology a few months ago and now I´m trying to using DS Photo app. I have problem with photo file size. I have iPhone 8, when I take a photo and upload via Onedrive the files has 5-7MB. When I use DSphoto app the file has 2-2,5MB. I checked all settings in app but still the same restult. Do you have any idea what I´m doing wrong? Thanks!
Backing up photo feature is nice, but you get double files. We need the option "backup to NAS and delete áfter backed up". Backup should save time. That is not when you backup and after a couple of weeks/days you want to backup again, because you did add new photo's in your map or moved to another map. This is really frustrating. Just need a backup option that synchronizes with the NAS backup folders/files and PHONE backup folders/files.
1. verify that pictures are backed up 2. delete images on phone 3. organize images on nas In that order there shouldn't be a problem with double backups. As long as you deleted the original picture before organizing.
Somehow these various services always like to focus on just photos ignoring videos, (especially 4K videos) and other data files. I wish they'd start to get out of that one track-minded syndrome and also start to consider video, PDF, DOC and other data files also as data that is worth while backing up. Short-sighted to just focus on photos. Fortunately I have a function built in provided by the phone manufacturer that automatically connects to my home network to back up locally or to the NAS. I also have Google Photos which backs up the photos and videos on-the-fly as the data is created.
Not Working anymore on Pixel android 8.1. Always have a backup error and connexion error while i'm already connect and see all files on my NAS. Very bad application.
DS Cloud would be one solution as it allows you to choose the folders on your DiskStation which you want to sync to your mobile device but depending on your requirements it may not be the best solution. Its internal viewer isn't great when viewing hi-res images/photographs compared to DS File or DS Photo.
that's wierd because that is exactly how I have got it setup to do....lol any thing new appears on my device it automatically uploads ..or ammo reading what you are talking about wrong?
I think you misunderstood me so I've rephrased the original comment. DS Cloud can do two-way sync between the DiskStation and mobile device but I was trying to say that it might not be the all in one solution if say you were a photographer or similar. Hope that clears up any confusion.
The main purpose of the app is to free up your phone storage space so you can continue to take more photos and videos. Remember, each app has its own space. App 1 cannot see what is used by app 2. You don’t want your gaming app to access your finance app. So there is no way a synology app can backup your whole phone. You need to do that externally via a PC or MAC.
There are plenty of options! This is one of them, and great if you already have or are considering a Synology NAS (which are great for other reasons as I've covered before).

I love mine!
nice app, but can it also organize photos into subfolders, based on date stamps? i keep them separately by month/year on my Synology NAS.
Great instructions and super simple to setup! Saves us a bunch of time when we want to update our photo collections with pictures from our phones!
Thanks for watching!
great tool, how do i get this app to carry on uploading the photos/videos from my phone to my nas even if/after the app is closed on the phone, it seems to stop uploading until i open the app back up?
Great Tip , What Win 10 file explorer or plug on are you using ?
i was struggeli,g for 4 hours thankyou !!
Thanks, clear and useful presentation. I like my NAS more every time.
Great tutorial, just what I was looking for. Fav'd and subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing!

How often does it back-up to the NAS from the phone?
Hello, thanks for this information but I have a question. Can I sync my phone photos or it just backsup to synology?
A novice question I'm sure but should I check the 'HTTPS' box when logging into DS file?
Thanks for this

I like Google Photos as a last-ditch, make sure everything is online backup, but I don't use it as a primary service.
I use Google photos extensively. They don't compress for the unlimited storage option so long as you stay within their stipulated limits of 16MP and 1080p. Can you backup from different devices (i.e. from wife's phone and from my phone)?
DSPhoto already as the possibility to do that. As soon as there an internet connection, and if there is any new photo on the phone or tablet, it immediately uploads to the NAS
Does WD My Cloud Home also delete photos/videos from the source after backup?
nice, but i wanted to select a sub folder into DCIM, and i couldn't, i had to backup my thousand photos i did'nt want to... :/ sad
I can only pick DCIM folder on the SD location. Mmy default photo/video storage is SD, but videos in 60fps are auto saved on Phone storage & won't be backed up in this case...
Any idea how could I back up my videos too? It's only save my photos

hy nice but for me it back up only photo no video . any idea why ? Galaxy s9
Can this sort of stuff be done with freenas?
It is a bit confusing that the same functionality seems to exists in DS Photo, isn't it more obvious to use that one?
It's not the same
Is there a option to synchronize as icloud do? when I delete a picture on my phone, it delete in the cloud as well

Something like that available on freeNAS ?
I use AirDroid 2 app. Works the same way.
Thanks for watching!
thank you, that was helpful
How does WD My Cloud app compare?
i read a review that said the only thing the wdmc app allows is downloading your camera roll from iphone and there isnt a proper ipad app.
How to do you back up videos with Synology DS File and NAS? I have it and I can only back up photos.
I... showed you how. It only does photos if you check "Upload photos only", but otherwise it does both. Might work a little different on iPhone.
Somehow these various services always like to focus on just photos ignoring videos, (especially 4K videos) and other data files. I was waiting for the 220+ but it is taking forever to be released
If I'm already using instant upload for photos & videos with DS photo - is there any reason to switch to this method?
Just if you wanna also do other file management on the NAS
Not Working anymore on Pixel android 8.1. Always have a backup error and connexion error while i'm already connect and see all files on my NAS. Very bad application.
nice video bro
Thanks!

why not just backup the entire phone data. maybe I have pdf files, document files that need backup, so having only photo backup option sucks

Unnecessary music ruined the video.
... or you just could use an app like Syncme wireless which doesnt need extra hardware... and is free...
