Great video Justine! Fast fashion crafting is getting out of hand! Nothing is new really. All the new stuff looks like the old stuff in modern packaging. It's great for new crafters but if you already have similar supplies you shouldn't feel pressure to buy more and more. Thank you for being sane:)
I agree. old stuff repackaged. And, I am not really seeing any new innovative craft supplies. What's really annoying is when there is something new many retailers jump on the wagon and create their version. I mean how many slim dies do you really need?
You Go Girl ! Thank you for having the guts to voice your opinion on this subject ! I'm sure you are going to get some flack for this... but who cares. So many of us are already grumbling about it at home. Use what you have, find other ways to use it, get what you want and don't be pressured into spending more than your budget allows. We are all really crafty or we wouldn't be doing this. We can figure it out. Stay crafty and enjoy yourself. Thank You Justine.
Thank you. How refreshing to watch a crafting video where someone is not selling something. I’m so tired of all the never ending products that are constantly being released. It’s like a feeding frenzy. This is honest and very helpful.
I hear you with the never ending products... I love Gina K Designs, but I have stopped watching her videos... she is working on doing monthly releases... by the time I get the product, the next release is already over, and she's working on the new release, but not the "one back" stuff. It is the same way with most stamp companies now... everything is new, spend $$$$$$$ for 1 or 2 cards worth, then spend $$$$ for another 1 or 2 cards worth. I check to see if I can find at least 3-5 separate uses for it, I don't bother getting it. As an example, the current SU mini has a Christmas Season bundle of stamps and dies. I bought it, because it was just 2 sizes of pine cones, and lots of foliage stems. Nothing was really specific for Christmas, except for the holly leaves. I can use this set in place of Forever Fern, and get some Christmas cards out of it to boot. :)
Yes, so ridiculous and annoying to see new products relentlessly being thrust on the audience every minute or so!!! 🙄 it's like we're all sitting ducks, and I think we all have fallen for it too! The pressure to buy the latest n greatest, even though in the end it reduces our creativity rather than enhancing it. What's more not much is "new" just old ideas being circulated in new "packaging" . I've stopped watching Jennifer mcguire regularly too... her using selling tactics like slipping in key phrases " easy to use", "so simple and fast" etc etc every second sentence she speaks, just get to me so irritated now!
@@Card_Crazed I totally understand where you are coming from. We are being inundated, but it’s definitely up to each of us to get control. I want to be able to watch these new videos and like stated here- use old stamps I have from long ago and create similar designs. That’s great for our creativity. I have become a fan of Gina K videos for many reasons, and I think she uses old products quite often. More often then I’ve seen other companies do it. And it doesn’t seem like she purges her older designs as frequently as some other companies . There are a couple companies that revisit old designs. I would love to see more of this. There are plenty of designs that could be “revisited” and still generate new income with new stampers, or even more seasoned stampers that just couldn’t invest in something the first time around! At any rate, it is definitely up to each of us to have control over our spending habits with all these new releases. I personally have to get better with this. It makes me really appreciate this type of video from Justine.
@@marigoldStudio i have stopped watching her, too. I used to enjoy her “My Favorite Crafty Things” series but now I can’t even finish an episode. So annoying with “I use this a lot, etc blah blah,” but you can tel the stamp set has not been used!
Great thoughts on thinking twice before getting something new. As someone who never de-stashes I already have so many stamps, dies, stencils, inks, papers, tools, etc. that something in my stash is bound to give me the same general design result. Good for you for reminding us that we can be creative without over-spending on more & more stuff!
I had some of that mesh silicon material that you can use under rugs to stop them moving about. Just cut a piece of that into 4 or 5 squares big enough for an ink pad and it does the same job as the expensive product.
I have been fighting with myself over so much of what you spoke about in this video. I have decided if I can't figure out another way of doing the same thing, maybe I don't need it. I use a silicone pot holder to hold my ink pad still, I use a Scan n Cut to cut out stamps, and I now make my own layering stencils with my Cricut. It may actually take a little longer to get it figured out, the the process of doing so is part of the fun. Thank you so much for being a sensible crafter!
I have a scan n cut & I love it!! Occasionally I’ll still buy a coordinating die, depending on the way it cuts out, like if it cuts out all the inside bits, but even then only sometimes. Scan n cut was a great investment.
I have fallen victim to wanting all the new things but there are so many releases from so many companies that it is impossible to keep up and I end up making just one card from a stamp and die set. I've spent $50 making a card that could be purchased for $5. Now when I see something that I like, I try to think of stamps and dies that I already have that could make a similar card. I have almost 500 stamp sets, not stamps, but sets!! It is time to get real. Thanks for sharing this video. I love all the stamp companies but there are too many releases too close together. From now on I am only going to buy stamps that I know I will use over and over again. Same for other supplies.
I agree Carole. i have fallen into the trap of buying all these new stamps or stamps/dies and the releases seem to never end. it seems like there is one every two weeks. i need to recreate the look with items i already have - so doable if I take a moment to look. thanks for your insight.
Carol, I am in the same boat! I have decided that now I will keep to only 3 companies. Unless I see a stamp set from another company other than one of those 3, then I may buy it. But it has really helped sticking with 3.
Very well said! I've been stamping for almost 25 years and, honestly, the craft industry is out of control. I moved to Brasil 7 years ago from NY and took ALL of my stuff. 7 years later I still have not used most of it and have no idea what I even own. When I saw these new ink pad holders come out, I thought the same thing as you. Cool but I can use my left hand to hold them.
The height of irony with the ink pad holders is seeing someone trying to pitch the sale of a holder by using it in her video, but she couldn't stop holding the holder while loading her branded, overpriced brush.
Thank you so much for bringing common sense back to crafting. During the pandemic I started watching lots of videos - too many - until I was beginning to forget my own style. I have stamps and dies I'll never use because they looked great in the video - but they aren't my style. Lots of us have been challenged during the pandemic to keep our mojo going. Sit back, be quiet and consider making the things that are true to you.
The old adage KISS "keep it simple stupid" comes to mind. So far, I've resisted buying the complicated sets or bundles. I can't see spending $24 on a stamp set for one card, so I try to make do with what I have. I think the companies are pricing lots of people out of the market.
I used to watch people on UA-cam do 1 kit 10 cards from Simon says stamp kits (and others) and keep meaning to create my own kits from my stash, if I can get 10 different cards out of one stamp set I think that’s not too bad! I also have gotten better at thinking about how I’ll use my products… love cute woodsy critter sets (lawn fawn) but most cards I give are for adult birthdays… so they don’t make sense to buy (anymore of them 😂). I really like justines new(ish) direction on her channel cause it’s so easy to want all the new things when you see people playing with them all on other channels! (Not dissing other channels at all, I love everyone who takes the time to put out free content for us, but they can be a bit too successful in emptying my wallet 😂)
I also reason a purchase sometimes by thinking about how when I first started creating there weren’t so many stamp “sets” to purchase (besides Stampin Up and CTMH) and the stamps in the local stores were $5 to $10 for one stamp. (The wood mounted ones) In some cases they still are being sold this way (locally and online) 🤔😱 That helped me “justify” buying a “set” of 8-10 stamps for $15-$24. But it’s definitely over kill out there now. 😏 We just need to be more selective. 😉
Justine you have hit the nail on the head with this video! I'm so pleased I'm not the only one who thinks those ink pad holders are RIDICULOUS! Like you said, WHEN was moving ink pad a problem?!? And don't even get me started at a certain company's 'flipped' stamps (ie.where a little critter stamp was facing left, you can now get the SAME STAMP but it's facing right... WTF?!) As you said marketing is spot on for a lot of these things but it's an expensive enough hobby as it is without the unnecessary products that we "must have". I'm also in the 'always made slimline cards without the slimline products' camp. I feel like I've got more creative but a lot of companies have gotten less creative; and instead of thinking of new designs they've just rehashed old ones into a different format. I miss the days of new releases bringing out something super-fun and innovative. Having said this, I guess I should be thankful to these companies since I now use what I have rather than buy new things which has led to me having A LOT more fun and creativity than I did before. Thank you for saying it like it is! Xxx
@@mandy.austin I agree with you. I was 'shouted' at on one channel for saying that I found the dies too expensive and restrictive to be worth the investment. .... Unsubscribed.
@@M5518-k5u people arent thinking for themselves very well at the moment i suspect. There is still so much fear around & the craft companies are making hay while the sun shines ... all the while virtue signalling their hearts out.
@@M5518-k5u I was not yelled at, but I was shamed by a comment I made on a channel regarding not buying coordinating dies because I use my scan-n-cut to cut out the stamped items I color. They made me feel like I was stealing because I didn’t buy the coordinating dies. Some of us do not get the items for free before they come out to use and advertise for the companies and that stuff is expensive!
@@kimberlysiddons I am so sorry you experienced that. So if we follow their logic; unless we use a coordinating die then we're stealing??! Which means that using scissors to cut out any image is stealing also?? Glory, there are going to be a lot of us in crafting prison on charges of stealing lol lol. Honestly, what a silly comment they made! Take no notice of them Kimberly, you keep using your scan and cut and enjoy it! 🧡
I completely agree. When the ink pad holders came out, I was like, "Is this really necessary? Who's so violently blending that they can't hold their ink pad in place?" And the brushes are a little crazy too. I found color coordinated sets on Amazon that I love for both neutral colors and rainbow for a fractionof the cost. Oh, and I wish I was organized. I'm one of those people that has good intentions to make swatches, but never get to it... I could go on and on about every single one of your points lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, you are not alone.
I went to the Dollar Tree, bought non-slip shelf liner and use a small piece of that to make my ink pads stay still. Then use the rest on my shelves or as jar openers in the kitchen.
@@ienjoygardening7361 Brilliant. The Dollar Tree has many little crafting hacks. I'm a fan of their makeup brushes for blending and I have many organization bins throughout my craftroom.
This is actually such an amazing and super useful video. We get so confused by all the brand new shiny products but really and truly nobody needs everything. Card making is meant to be relaxing not a money vacuum ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have currently put buying card making products on hold. I hardly watch stamp company new releases or card maker UA-cam videos. It happened naturally without any thought. I had enough of buying supplies and I just stopped buying. I’ve gone back to what I started doing before card making, which was coloring in adult coloring books or my favorite, finding coloring pages (free or purchased) and printing those on my paper of choice. I buy far less now, and I’m using my distress oxide ink pad’s and foam dome blenders for backgrounds on my coloring pages. Bonus: I’m using up my stash of cards I kept on making and the pile is slowly dwindling, and I haven’t made any new cards or card panels for a few months. I have bought some nice coloring pencils and I’m saving up for some more, but I don’t feel the urge to splurge and empty my bank account. It’s very liberating.
Yay for you!! That is seriously great. Something I need to do for sure. I also love coloring & haven’t done it in awhile. Perhaps I’ll get out a coloring book today…
With so many crafters getting out of this expensive hobby, I have found it easier to save lots of money by buying most of my paper craft supplies from the local Goodwill and other similar charity shops.
My local scrapbooking store holds a "garage sale" where individuals can buy space to sell unwanted crafting items for store credit. I find many $1, $2, $3 items that were much, much more! Some of the items are brand new, never used. It's win-win-win-win! The sellers get rid of items, the store has more sales, the buyers get great deals, we are basically recycling so the environment wins, too! I've also found crafting items at the Goodwill and Arc. People donate just as many new items as they do used.
This is the best video I´ve seen in a long time, Justine, you are just right. Craft marketing has gone way to far and I´m more into stretching my investment/supplies creatively rather than spending a lot of money in things I will use once or twice. Thanks!
This is sooooo good and soooo true!! I have looked at all the layering dies and crazy new tool bits and wondered why? It is a commercial circus out there, and when budgets are limited, it’s confusing to decide where to spend your money. Your video really helped me reflect and consider wants vs needs. Thanks
The message I heard from this video is to know yourself, how you work, what you like to make, and really consider whether something is worth it to you. We are all different, with different tastes, styles, storage, and budgets. I love my swatches and use them almost every time I craft (but I don’t have special swatch products). As much as I like to look at patterned paper, I find I just don’t use it. I usually catch myself before buying another pad, but sometimes a really pretty one slips through. 😀 But I am enjoying the basic slimline dies so that I make it a bit easier on myself when making these styles of cards. Have I bought a ton? No. Some? Yep, and they were thoughtfully purchased, which again, is what I got out of your video. Take care!
Thank you for saying these things, Justine! I have often wished, like with the blending brush craze/issue, that stamp companies would focus on making unique-to-them products (stamps, dies, stencils, etc.), rather than just rebranding something like makeup brushes or chamois cloths, & then charging an arm & a leg. And one company will come out with a tool, then it seems like other companies have to follow suit. I mean, do we really need 5 different companies selling their Teflon bone folders??? One supply I do personally use that you listed is patterned paper. Yes, I do have a TON of it, but I also make use of it. Sometimes on a card, I in fact have very little cardstock, but more patterned paper. Not to where it looks too busy or like "patterned paper sneeze," though! Anyway, thank you again. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)
This was timely. When I began crafting three years ago I found myself buying everything that was recommended and only using a quarter of what I purchased. I recently took an inventory of my stash and found that I have spent hundreds of dollars on duplicate stamps, dies, inks, machines and other tools. Because I had so much, I became overwhelmed and stopped crafting. I am now in the process of purging and decluttering. I look forward to getting back in the groove using only those products that I truly love.
I'm not saying that I don't spend way too much on card crafting however, the best thing I can recommend is keeping either a paper or a digital list or notebook of some kind with pictures, of your crafty inventory, it can be a pain at times to maintain but it is sooooo worth it because you are less likely to buy sets of things that are pretty much the same as the ones you already have. I can't tell you how many times I see a video or blog post of something "new" and get that fleeting though that "I have to have it" and then I go look at my digital listing, and realize "oh wait this is pretty darn close to that so".
i tried to catalog my 20-years of stamps, stencils etc and it became labor intensive. Completing that project I now i realize have too many items to choose from. Time to purge or give away some. I became a 'curator' of craft supplies and not necessarily A PRODUCER of cards...as much as i could/should.
This is a great video and so many good points. I feel people are going this route after spending so much money over the years. shop your stash is the best solution nowadays.
I’ve started a no spend year on craft supplies. I’ve found I only need clear embossing powders and clear stickles to go with any color that I have. Getting ready to downsize my stamp collection and hopefully start using up my patterned papers.
Justine you are so right about the products you mentioned, especially patterned papers, I purchased a few 12 x 12 paper pads when I started crafting thinking I could cut them down for cards, however once I've got into card making properly I don't use the patterned paper and the fun in making the card is making my own background like you suggested. Will not be buying slim line dies either.
These days i mainly buy inks, reinkers, professional art supplies , watercolour paper ....stickers...alpha and sentiment dies....i feel like there are way too many releases to keep up with and craft supplies have increased steeply in price, although that may be only in Australia where i live. But here supplies cost twice or more than twice what they cost in the States and some brands even three or four times the cost.... so it's not exchange rate related. Those wanting to start nowadays will have a hard time getting even the basics in many cases. On other threads I see people complaining that their craft time has become stressful ... it's meant to be helping their mental health at a time like this. You're right to discriminate and to teach your audience to do the same because the craft community was never like this before.
We are opposites. I LOVE the bundles and enjoy all of the possibilities that they offer. I also am obsessed with layering dies. I think my love of layering dies stems back to when I began my cardmaking journey with the original cricut... I find it really relaxing. I definitely think this kind of list isn't for everyone. Now that I have built quite a stash, the thing I have been trying to do is only get products that I really love, not just sort of like. It's hard to not want it all. 😂
I have a suggestion for everyone on how to keep your ink pads from moving around while ink blending. Go to a dollar store and buy a package of foam mesh underlay. I take it and cut off a strip about 3” x 12” depending what works best for you and then I place the pads I want to use in a row and ink blend from there. Works great! Hope you get a chance to try this and if you do, please let me know what you think.
YESSSSS! A million times yes! These are all thoughts that I've had. I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I think the only one that I am contemplating is actually swatching my embossing powder lids because they often come out a different color than they appear. I find myself buying the more basic dies these days. The stamp sets that I do buy are smaller and not as intricate as the layered sets. And brushes... I just bought some inexpensive makeup brushes on Amazon with colored handles. Sure I don't have one for each color of ink, but the 20 or so brushes I got were cheaper than one set of eight in the scrapbooking or card making world. I used to have a ring with a bunch of different techniques or suggestions. I used to like to grab three or four of these and scrap that way. It forced me to think in a different way how to use the things I already had.
Speaking of techniques, if you haven't heard about Justine's technique binder class, it's chock full of techniques for a nominal cost. Now THAT is bang for your buck!
Great video! I've been saying most of these things to myself lately as my craft room gets more and more cluttered with product. It seems fast and easy = $$$. Let the creative juices flow and only buy a "must have". Easier said than done when most tutorials feature latest products and cards that are so beautifully created. Many times when the product finally arrives I forget what technique was used that enticed me to buy it. Then it becomes a fishing expedition on finding the tutorial. Thanks Justine! A common sense video!
I can’t tell you how timely this was for me! I’m getting so frustrated with the craft world right now.... it’s like it’s a commercial in every video and you’re so pressured . Then I stopped and looked at what I have and have made up my mind to use what I have with different techniques. I could go on and on but I won’t. I’m in complete agreement! Thank you for helping me to feel normal! 💕🙋♀️🌴🇺🇸
I was agreeing with you up until patterned paper. I was like ”Listen Justine” 😂 The only reason people get into the hype of all these products is because of the well-known influencers using them in their videos and media. Then end up destashing them all brand new in package lol I’m so glad someone finally said it.
What an honest video and I feel the same way…. I purchased blending brushes at Dollar Tree for $1.00 and have all the sizes and don’t need the pretty color coordinated ones!! Love it
Thank you so much for doing this video. The onslaught of new products every single month is a clear sign that these stamp companies are not truly interested in anything but the almighty dollar in their pocket. It's not to encourage creativity or keeping the hobby affordable to all income levels. Please do more of these. Viewers need to be encouraged to be happy with something new once in awhile and not feel pressured to buy yet another stamp set or gizmo or gadget just because so and so uses it. Vote with your dollars and vote wisely.
@@LHarrolle I understand your perspective but I’m not an ATM machine. If people stop buying businesses will fold, but consumers need to take care of their own financial needs first. Sure if a consumer has extra spending money go for it, but I’m not so sure everyone does but will get caught up with the hype and buy anyway. I’ve watched a few live streams with a major name. Occasionally someone will post a comment in live chat about the high prices etc and the comment is deleted by the moderators. That’s how is it.
There are plenty of videos on less expensive craft products. And you could do what this video suggests--think about whether you personally need it. Of course they want to sell their products, that's what companies do. Just pick a fave company and support them. You don't have to watch everyone's videos or visit every store.
Love this video and you are absolutely correct. I’ve been card making for 25 years and when I started we had to make everything ourselves as you couldn’t purchase much. Now everything is pre made and you might as well go and purchases a preprinted card. I know it’s about the merchandising but as an artist it’s a little much.
Great insight. My life wad getting out of hand buying crafting items. I started 2 years ago to stop buying any card/craft products. I use only what I have now. If I don't have something in a form or color or type, I make do or change direction. My motto from now on is to make what I can with what I have. Period.
I need to adopt that motto. A couple years ago I stopped buying & was really working on the “use what I have” mantra. I did great for (sad to admit this) only 4-5 months. Then a release came out from Simon Says & I was absolutely in love with several items. I was certain I would use them all, had ideas for all of them, so I got them. And that was fine, except that it started me back to looking at every release & I found I was easily shopping again. Early this year I got rid of a bunch of stuff & it felt so good to give it away to someone who wanted to stamp but didn’t have many supplies. I need to do that again. And “make do with what I have!”
Gee, and here I thought it was just me who felt this way. I also make jewelry...solder, set stones, enamel, etc. When jewelry making became really popular and more mainstream, companies did the same thing. Marketed tools that made no sense and were often made by the jewelry artist. I am retired and work at a Michael's and am amazed at the amount of 'stuff' that gets pushed at consumers that stifles their creativity and, in many instances, is practically useless. It's a crazy world.🦋
This video needed to be made! Companies that are forcing their customers to purchase “bundled” sets are going to alienate their existing customers who might only want the stamp but don’t need the dies, the foiling plates, and all the other stuff they’ll be forced to pay for that come “bundled” with it. That might work for new crafters, but many existing crafters have already figured out there are less-expensive and BETTER alternatives to achieving the same end. I understand that companies HAVE to make ever-increasing profits to satisfy their stakeholders, but tricking their customers is not the way to do it. Those ink pad holders are a perfect example of creating a product to solve a problem that doesn’t even exist. And then trying to convince the public that they need to buy that product to solve that problem that they don’t even have.
Who's forcing customers to buy? All of the bundled sets I've seen offer the items for individual sale also. Some people like the bundles and some don't.
Thanks for this video, Justine! So practical and I really needed to be reminded, too. I have been wanting to shop seeing all these new product releases from companies each time I open UA-cam. No one will ever be able to keep up and trying to will eventually lead to anxiety - which totally defeats the purpose of crafting.
Agree! I stocked up on consumables last year during lockdown. I now have enough stuff that will last me for a year or two. I didn’t get sucked into several of the items you discussed. Thanks!
Your honesty is why I am now subbed, liked, alarmed to your channel. As a beginner, I have bought stuff I see in videos thinking I absolutely must have it only to find out that I don't. In fact have yet to use on a project. Thank you for such and enlightening tutorial especially for someone on a strict budget to now spend on just what one needs.

Patterned 12x12 paper is great for photography backgrounds for small items like jewelery, cosmetics and personal care products. You can fit a ton of different backgrounds in a photo album, flip through the book and take photos.
I've bought most of my craft supplies at the thrift store! Ink pads, paper, punches, embosser machine, die cuts, stamps, etc! Alot of people try something, buying everything they can to make that item, only to hit barriers or just plain get disinterested. And I get the rewards!
You have just voiced everything I have been thinking regarding the current marketing game involved with the Cardmaking industry, and I’m not even a real stamper (digital die cutting!) thank you for your honest view on how people can remain creative yet frugal and get the most out of their existing supplies.
Oh my goodness this video is so on target! I’m not very experienced but have gotten caught up in this trap. Thank you so much for making me feel okay about thinking it’s to much.
I think you handled this perfectly! Crafting is so "nicey-nice" that it's impossible to say anything that is remotely negative!!! And let's face it...if we love something, we'll buy it. But we need this type of honest feedback as well. I'm horrible when it comes to buying new things. My room is completely out of control! Please continue this series. Because by now, I don't know if you'll end up getting on any DT's so we'll keep watching to monetize you. LOL
Thank you, thank you for this video! You have put many of my thoughts into words. Justine, would you consider doing a slimline card tutorial without all the hyped up things we would have to buy?
OMG I so agree with this video, everything you said about buying and using your craft products I have been saying for awhile now. I still have weakness when buying crafty things, so I put the item in my basket and go back a week later and see if I really really need it. Most of the time I just say no!! Great video!! Also liked the one on pattern paper.
You are spot on . I'm only a hobby crafter, after I've watched crafting videos I have succumbed to buying craft supplies that realistically I don't need. I get easily overwhelmed with my stuff, can never find a particular thing I'm looking for. Instead of my hobby being fun, it becomes stressful. I don't have an outlet for anything I may create and invariably I ask myself what do I do with everything!
Not just your video amazing with all the points covered but the expressions behind are also on the point. I feel exactly the same for lot of the things you mentioned here. e.g. cutout 15 times to make a flower!! I don't know man!!. SO so so so true. For a lot of people this is just a hobby and a way to destress. If I loose one die cut after so much work, I'll be so frustrated that I might never use that product again(been there, done that). I have done very little crafting in last 1 and half year(pandemic time) due to thinking of cleaning my desk after few minutes of crafting to use it for my work next day so I know now I would never buy a product which is too complex to use or serve a very specific purpose. Thank you so much for doing this kind of video, I wish lot of crafters also does this kind of video(everyone does what to buy but never what not to spend on).
I hear you! It's unfortunate that the craft is getting so out of hand. I'm not going to participate! The ink holder is the latest crazy trend. Not only are they ridiculously expensive, I just don't see me using them; besides, do you know how many craft supplies I can buy with even the purchase of just three? When the slimline rage came into fruition, I did fall into the die pit. I bought a few stitched (because I love them!) but find that I really don't make that many slimlines so NO MORE! The chuckie tool craze went crazy. Why spend nearly $40 on something that you can just use a dry eraser or air hockey pusher that will work just as fine for a fraction of the cost? I do like the concept so I took an old candle lid, cardboard, felt and sequins and made my own for zero cost. I have so many supplies I have yet to use I'm really evaluating what my future purchases will be. I appreciate you, as an influencer, being honest and not feel the need to "represent" the companies. Don't get me wrong, I spend plenty with my favorite companies but some have just gone too far. Have a good day!
I agree. As for the "Chuckie tool," I never used my dry-erase eraser, so now it sticks to the drawer of my craft table--which is a heavy-duty metal tool chest with a butcher block top. (Yes, I did spend a lot on the workbench, but I have never regretted it!)
Interesting video, Justine. Can’t say I disagree with much that you said. One thing I will say about the bundles you spoke about with matching stamps, dies, multiple stencils, embossing folder and hot foil plates! 🤯 One of the biggest issues for me (aside from the cost) is these new products are coming out monthly. You invest in all this stuff that matches and next month it’s old news. You’ll never keep up with this industry, and it was already tough before. Trust me I do my fair share of support of multiple companies because let’s face it - with the right design team- you will want it all. But I have to take a break because I’m running out of room to store it, and time to use it! 🤪 TFS!
This is the FIRST of your videos that I have ever, ever, agreed with every single thing that you said, Justine! Thankfully, I never got sucked into half of those gimmicky things… simply because of price. Those bundles you were talking about work out to be several hundred dollars where I live. Definitely not worth it unless someone buys it for me as a Christmas present 😝
Justine, I am so down with you on this! This year I freed myself from the “kits” scheme. If I could get back the money that I have wasted on kits . . .
The kits helped me when I was first starting. I stopped using them pretty early though. They helped me learn stuff. My fingers didn't like that they sent so many tiny dies, I was using the spellbinders ones and they do that all the time but their kits are nice. Tiny stamps don't bother me though, they are fun to have for little embellies and such.
Love this and thank you. I love crafters/card makers that endorse the idea of using what we already have oppose to endorsing purchasing the latest new products. IMO buying new products limits the means to be creative. Before we had these new and wonderful products, we *had* to be creative and innovative. Unfortunately, creativity is dissipating.
I’m currently watching a series of videos and I’m thinking of THIS video and I’m appreciating your take on the situation. Honestly I love this craft and I love all the videos I watch at no cost to myself. BUT I’m beginning to not appreciate the creation and marketing of products that are redundant and not needed. I hope everyone makes their purchases based in real usefulness and not YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS NEW PRODUCT!!
It's so refreshing to see someone speak honestly and realistically about these things. I can't afford the "latest and greatest" in the crafting world, and some crafters on UA-cam make me feel badly about it.
Swatching, that is a chore. I recently started swatching my colored pencils because that's what the colorist guru in one of my FB groups insists everyone MUST do. Yeah, I don't look at my swatches either, because old habits die hard and it's faster to just "eyeball it". Watercolors, on the other hand, are different because a lot of paints do not look anything like they do in their pans or tubes when they are painted out. Soooo, long story short, I have learned to choose my battles. Colored pencils, don't bother, watercolors swatch... and no fancy swatch books for me either, I just use a mixed media spiral bound sketch book.
Nice tips their MsJustine. I am just starting my paper crafting but I cant deny that their are alot of opinions on the market and all of them are nice. Happy to say I am trying ti be a smart consumer and buy only what I really like and need. Dont even have any blending brush and instead use scrap foams use as wrapping packages and its good for me. Really like your advices and always looking forward for your new video everytime. Stay safe.
Thank you for this! I know my husband thinks I have too many craft supplies, but he has no idea how much I COULD spend on craft supplies!!! I have a Cricut, & I enjoy saving money by making a lot of my own things like sentiment cut-outs, stencils & such. (It’s also an “older” Cricut, several models ago. I’ve seen a meme many times on Facebook that collecting craft supplies & actually using them are two different things. SO true!!!
Love this! I totally agree with the ink pad holders- I use a rubber square that is for opening jars! It sits on my glass mat well and doesn't move! And it only cost me $1!!! Love your honesty and I totally agree with a lot of them! Thanks for sharing!
Yes! Totally agree with you on all of these, except the patterned paper. I don't think I'll be able to break that habit. Thank you for saying out loud what I have been thinking.
I love your video, I do have a slightly different take on the ink holders - for people with limited mobility, or hand issues they might be worthwhile. When I injured my left shoulder, all of a sudden I couldn't hold a piece of paper while I cut it. So I'm glad people create products that can help provide more accessibility. That being said, I don't need them. So I don't buy them. I do love the stamp bundles, but that's because I choose a few, and I know myself and how often I'll use the item. So far no regrets with the 3 I have. Slimline, I have 4 items for that and that's all I need. Like you I also use normal stamps, etc. for slimline. I will choose the slimline option if it's the same cost as the A2 though, I figure I can cut it down. And then I can also make A7 sizes if I want. Another card maker did a month of videos by creating her own box from shopping her stash and coming up with ideas based on it. It was clever and inspired me to stop shopping on my computer and shop my stash :D I enjoy your videos for the same type of inspiration!
Truth! Great thoughts! Being a fairly new card maker, you get sucked into all the products. I figured out all these new releases every season is what everyone is doing and new product will come and go, etc. Thank you.
I love the section on layered dies - made me appreciate my Cricut a whole lot! I tend to use my Cuttlebug for embossing and Cricut for cutting. You get a lot of bang for your buck and don’t have to keep buying new dies.
Hey if you have a scan n cut you don't need to get the dies or stencils. You can make them on your own. AND you can resize you stamp to fit any project you need. The scan n cut is one purchase and can be used for so many crafty ides. No I do not work for scan n cut or brother.
I'm with you on this! I avoided the whole die cutting thing for a while, but then got a ScanNCut which can do a lot of that for me (plus some). Then I got into Spellbinders kits (incl dies) during the pandemic. But now I have such a good collection that I think I'm set for a while. I'm not going for those layering dies anymore... too.much.work. I'm also finding the same with layering stamps. I'm just trying to use more of what I have right now... being more creative with what I have (with my limited crafting time). Thanks for another great video!
Enjoyed your video. I so agree with you on this craziness of the industry. Everything is getting first and foremost out of control economically. So many things are getting to be crazy price points. I am in the middle of a move in temporary quarters for 6 months. I packed a small bag to take with me of a cross-section of things. There are some things I am missing desperately and others I am thinking that I will buy no more in that category ever again. Thanks for being honest.
I really love your vlog and being so honest with what is going on in the crafting industry, specifically cardmaking supplies. I like watching release videos to see what’s “new”. But I’m never compelled to buy. How many floral stamps do I need to have? Will buying another snowflake or butterfly stamp make any difference to the person I’m sending the card to? The beauty of cardmaking is being able to make a handmade card that comes from your heart, where you have invested time on - not how many or how much supplies you have used. Thank you Justine for being a voice for crafters like us who just enjoy creating with what we have in our stash.😊♥️
I agree with you. The person receiving the card can't tell if we used £50 blending tools or £1 blending tools, and, they don't care! Nor do they care about card trends! They just appreciate the fact that they got a card!
This is a very insightful video to encourage fans of your channel not to overspend unnecessarily. I agree with most you have said and Ive never invested in those things either. Patterned paper Ive slowed down but I find them very useful so I dont regret having a stash.
Aahhh…a sane voice of wisdom in a crazy, consumption-driven craft world! Often all the stuff actually inhibits creativity. Thanks for speaking out dear Justine!
Thank you. You make a lot of sense with this video. I have fallen into the trap of buying more than I need, and I have decided to go with what I already have-which is probably more than I need to make different cards for many years! Your video confirms that I am making the right decision. Thanks, again.
First, I was nodding in agreement. Then I started nodding vigorously and saying, "yes! Yes!" Then I started laughing out loud when you described the stack of patterned papers you jettisoned in 2013. We all love the latest greatest thing, but I'm with you on how it's soooo easy to get way too much stuff -- and then we spend too much time acquiring and managing the stuff -- and not MAKING or CREATING with all that great stuff! I have been on my "use what you have" program for over a year now, and while I do get a new doodad now and then, I find the "less is more" mantra to be a great way to get creative. You go, girl!
Yay for you. I have thought the same thing for years. I am a stamper of probably 27 or 28 years and I don't feel like I need to buy anything I can figure it out with what I have. Thank you so much.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This video was so honest and clear, and I agreed with everything you said. It’s so important to be honest with ourselves about why we are buying what we are buying. Do I really need more blending tools? Nope. Paper? Nope. Stamps. Oh my gosh, no! And you are spot on about swatches… I never look at mine 😂
@@wandazleaskeigh7710 I see it as a video of what she would not get in the future, because having already bought it, decided she could do without and use her money elsewhere. Yours, my, anyone’s needs/wants are always different and I like watching these videos to see what other peoples experience is. I have some of the things she does and have not purchased some of the things too. I watched it without any issue!
You are spot on Justine. I started stamping years ago and liked how you could buy a whole set of stamps for under $20. You could mix them around and get all kinds of combinations with sets etccc......Now it seems like the industry has gone into hyper drive and as you said, there are so many supplies that are so expensive that you could never make enough cards to justify the , stamps, stencils, hot foil etc... and they different types of inks, sooooo many, I feel like there are hardly any stamps these days and sooo many are flowers. I really feel like we have to make so many choices of not going down a path like, gel plates, or foiling machines, copics. I know you really have to watch yourself since Germans have much smaller houses than Americans do. Hope you are having a lovely fall.
First one here! I was so early that when this popped up in my feed your name wasn't even under the video, just your picture. Weird lol. It's funny the things we realize we don't need after we thought we just had to have them 😉. My list of things I don't buy anymore is definitely longer than my shopping list. I don't own a single blending brush... Or sponge... I grabbed a bag of makeup wedges at the dollar store over 5 years ago and I'm still using them! I've never seen the need to buy a die to cut out a card base- if I can't cut a simple card base shape with my paper cutter then maybe I shouldn't be making cards at all. And then to buy the slimline dies? I would much rather spend my money on something pretty... Like more ink that I don't need 😂. I hope it's okay to share another creator's link here... For those of you that haven't seen the hoarders video, please don't watch it with anything in your mouth because I can assure you, it will soon be coming out of your nose. She hits it on the head as far as all of the stuff we think we need, but don't really. ua-cam.com/video/r3D77sMmwd8/v-deo.html
TFS. You bring up some good points. I can’t believe what some of these haulers do with or where can store all they buy. And yes, it is marketing when the same design is revamped to different uses, from stamp, to die, to stencil, & foiling. It is a real turn off when a video showcases a new design but the list of products to create a card is a mile long. I do use patterned paper to create cards to donate to charities because it is quicker; however, I do not have a large stash, and certainly not to your height!
Fast fashion crafting.... Omg, Lindsay, that sooo nails it. Crafting has gone from Pucci to H&M.
So agree just changing bits and selling at ridiculous prices
Amen!
You’re absolutely right! That’s the reason that I follow the Frugal crafter! You need to watch her, she is brilliant! ❤️
Justine… yeah for you!!! It is so annoying how creativity is being replaced by consumerism! I applaud you for you wisdom! Thanks!
Great idea, thanks!
I use sort of the same thing. Mine is rubbery shelf liner and it works perfectly.
@@jcparkins Same here! I’ve always had the shelf liner version on hand for years, and it’s really inexpensive.
Great idea. Never crossed my mind Thanks
You can use dollar tree silicone mats
I have been fighting with myself over so much of what you spoke about in this video. I have decided if I can't figure out another way of doing the same thing, maybe I don't need it. I use a silicone pot holder to hold my ink pad still, I use a Scan n Cut to cut out stamps, and I now make my own layering stencils with my Cricut. It may actually take a little longer to get it figured out, the the process of doing so is part of the fun. Thank you so much for being a sensible crafter!
Thank you all...Justine you're a blessing!
I have a database for my stamps. I have over 11,000 (not sets) and they aren’t all catalogued yet. It’s been almost 20 years but still.
I’ve been making envelopes with my LOADS of patterned paper. I agree, creating my own backgrounds, I often don’t even think of patterned paper.
@@daisyv5038 I haven't seen them but just as you say, I thought hang on...don't you have to HOLD the holder 🤣🤣🤣
@@daisyv5038 😂😂😂
This was so refreshing to hear someone point out the reality of this paper crafting rabbit hole
(The wood mounted ones)
In some cases they still are
being sold this way
(locally and online) 🤔😱
That helped me “justify” buying a “set” of 8-10 stamps for $15-$24.
Xxx
I havent bought a single slimline product. I think it's ridiculous too.
“ Violent Blending!” 😂😂😂
@@Nan8able I was gonna reply exactly that but I see you’ve beaten me to it. 😀
Like the only reason I could come up with for the ink pad holder was if you are disabled and therefore only have use of one hand/arm.
Yes! I unsubscribed from all the new letters and realized my crafting life has become so much better. Made me realize I don’t need a lot of stuff.
@@divyaruth3563 absolutely!
Yay for you!! That is seriously great. Something I need to do for sure. I also love coloring & haven’t done it in awhile. Perhaps I’ll get out a coloring book today…
@@harriettezmalloy7182 Go for it. I haven’t stopped coloring!
I do this as well as yard sales. Its amazing how easy it is to find or make what you want for pennies on the dollar
Tuesday Morning is another great place to find paper craft supplies. You have to look through everything, but you can find some good buys.
This is the best video I´ve seen in a long time, Justine, you are just right. Craft marketing has gone way to far and I´m more into stretching my investment/supplies creatively rather than spending a lot of money in things I will use once or twice. Thanks!
I agree with everything you pointed out here! One thing I do with all my cards is line the envelopes and that’s how I’m using up my patterned paper.
Oh what a fab idea!
Great idea!
That's a great idea!
That's a FANtastic idea, Dana...TFS!
I started making my own envelope too
This is sooooo good and soooo true!! I have looked at all the layering dies and crazy new tool bits and wondered why? It is a commercial circus out there, and when budgets are limited, it’s confusing to decide where to spend your money. Your video really helped me reflect and consider wants vs needs. Thanks
Absolutely it’s a commercial circus out there, and those finicky dies to make intricate flowers are…. I better not say in case I offend anyone.
It is a commercial circus alright! :)
YES! To most of these if not all. The ink stabilizing pads were one that I truly didn’t see the point in, without even buying them.
I use a piece of the shelf liner and it works perfectly
My sentiments exactly....I need to use what I already have and fight the need to buy more stuff!! Thanks!!!
Thank you!! So much truth here. The slim line product line is just a way for these companies to get more money.
That’s a fantastic idea! I love the idea of laying out a strip to place a bunch of ink pads on. Thanks!!
Thanks Jennifer for your comment.
I’ve been using the foamy shelf liner for a few years. Iiialso use it in my mixed media art journals, and to make patterns on my gel plate.
I've swatched the lids. I did it simply because mine are kept in a drawer and it's easy to see which one I want without taking them all out.
@@janrogers8352 That's exactly why I want to do it. I like the idea of being able to glance and grab! 😊
Thank you for reenforcing what I already felt!!! It’s hard when you suffer from “Gotta Have It All” syndrome. Great video!
I am so on the same page! I’m purging so much stuff! And you put a voice to my feelings perfectly. Thank you! ❤️
thank you SO much for validating how I've been feeling. There's so much stuff and I'm completely overwhelmed.
It's getting to the point where we will all need professional counseling to combat our overwhelmed anxiety 😳 Hugs Kate in New York
I was like ”Listen Justine” 😂
The only reason people get into the hype of all these products is because of the well-known influencers using them in their videos and media. Then end up destashing them all brand new in package lol I’m so glad someone finally said it.
lolol
Sure. Maybe these companies should stop trying. No more videos and no more new products. We can all sit back and watch them fold then, one by one.
Thank you!!! I did invest in a scan n cut. I use it to cut out stamped images instead of buying dies. It’s already paid for itself.
Oh Justine, what a breath of fresh air you are. Common sense points of view. I hope you have no backlash from this video. Bless you and thank you.
Unfortunately, she has had to explain herself already.😞
LoL, so true! ❤️
Who's forcing customers to buy? All of the bundled sets I've seen offer the items for individual sale also. Some people like the bundles and some don't.
So nice to know others feel the way I do. Those ink pad holders seem so wasteful. Loved your thoughts on aper as well
Thanks for this video, Justine!
Thanks!
Thank you I glad you shared this. I think the craft community should talk about this way more. It could help a lot.

I literally do the cart thing for almost everything I buy--crafty or not...buying online is too easy!
I agree with you completely. When a the chuckie tool came out I thought that looks just like an air hockey pusher, too!
Using a candle lid for a “Chuckie/Debby tool” is an amazing idea!! Thanks for sharing that.
🤪 TFS!
Thank you for saying this out loud. I feel the same way. Yes I’ve bought more stamps that i probably don’t need but all these extras are not needed.
Great video, Justine! This resonates with me on so many levels! I’m with you on so many of these “not going to buy anymore.” ♥️😊
Haha maybe for super intense colorists one must swatch. No idea. I’ve done fine without it.
Absolutely Love this video Justine! I'm sure you could do a 2nd & 3rd part. 😂 I know I could. ❤😘
Thank you for your honesty. It can be so easy to get caught up in the current trends and spend a whole lot of money without needing to.
Love this! Great job putting all this craft “stuff” I think I need and then don’t use! Agreed with everything you said! Thank you so much!🙏
Nice tips their MsJustine.
It was clever and inspired me to stop shopping on my computer and shop my stash :D I enjoy your videos for the same type of inspiration!
great points!
Great job Justine. You are so right on. I do swatch watercolors because it is so hard to tell what the color is in the pan.
1:07 “Nobody does this!” So true! 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t see anything bundled that you couldn’t also buy separately....
@@kathyp374 do you see her telling people not to buy stuff or is she telling us her own experience about these products ? 🤔
I agree with you on slimline dies
I been making slimline cards for years without dies.

That video is HILARIOUS! "Tim! You're killing me!" 🤣🤣🤣
omgosh, that video is hysterical! This was totally me from about 2000 to 2010, lol.
That video is genius! TFS!
That video is hilarious 🤣
Hilarious video! Thanks for sharing!
