I come from a very small town in South Carolina. My graduating class had less than 100 people. My parents were and still is very religious. My parents both worked very hard. My Dad is retired now and my mom is still working for Walmart over 20 years. Hopefully she will be retiring soon. I have one sister we are 3 years apart.

Very very similar life. My parents were and are married so that was the difference for me. I'm grateful for my childhood because it made me who I am.

Jenell, thank you so much for sharing your story. I'm a first-generation college student. I work full time and study in a bachelors degree program designed for adult students like me. Thank you for this look into your childhood. Thank you for inspiring.

This was soo inspirational. My dad had a college education, mom had a high school education with a dash of college courses. My parents divorced when I was 5. I didn’t realize we were “poor” until I was in high school. My mom was awesome at making something out of nothing. My upbringing inspired me to do better and so did this video! Thanks! 🙌🏽

My haitian parents gave their all. They left Haiti for Canada to give us a chance. While in Canada, I was born. Later, our entire family were also able to get our american residence. Now we have the privilege to have dual citizenship. I am grateful for their sacrifice of differing their dreams. I now am an RN with a Bachelor’s degree and feel fulfilled when I go back home to Montreal and financially take care of my parents. Their sacrifice made me have complete respect for the importance of education and knowing your worth. All four of their kids have degrees and we are determined to spoil them with gratitude and love. 🇭🇹🇨🇦🇺🇸

So refreshing! Your honesty in this video is just so refreshing! My parents migrated to NYC from Grenada at ages 25 and 21. They too were disappointed that their assumption of streets paved with gold were false. Less than a year later they would have my sis and then me. We grew up in a modest neighborhood in brooklyn but during the 80s things changed and drugs, violence, and hearing gun shots was a norm. I always knew I wanted to be in hospital administration and I went on to obtain my masters in Healthcare Administration by putting myself through college. Ten years ago I bought a house for my parents so they could enjoy retirement in their own home.

Loved this. I was born and raised in the projects. I didn't know I was poor until about middle school. Honestly even then I didn't use the word poor, I just understood I wasn't able to do many things. Fast forward, I have a degree in Education and a family of my own. My husband and I work very hard so that our two boys get to experience things we never did. I adore my mom for all her hard work. She did the best she could with what she had.

I love this concept and story behind this video! Great editing and your story is inspiring. Keep these up!
My parents had me at 15 and 18 so they struggled a lot in the beginning. But I’d like to think they are proud of who I am today.

My grandparents (on my dad's side) came here from the islands and my father and his siblings grew up in the projects. He never finished college. My mother has a masters degree and is an educator. We grew up middle class. We had it pretty good. Weren't rich or poor. My brother went to school for music production, but laziness has him doing a 9 to 5. I chose not to finish school and do what I always wanted. Laziness kept me from it for some years. I got married, we had kids, and I was a stay at home mom. I love being home. My husband also didn't finish college. He works in corporate making very good money and we're both starting businesses, as well as both being authors. Life is funny. Everyone has a different story, and it's interesting to see where we end up.

Its so funny that every immigrant believes that America is that way. I was born here in America, last of 7 and my parents bought a home and then bought several homes and now were all grown realizing how little we had and how happy we were. Amazing. Kids nowadays will not understand the struggle. My daughter has only not been to Africa ans Antartica at 9 years old. But every year growing up i went to disney, several vacations including the caribbean, went to catholic school and went for my BA and MS why? Because i could. Because it means something to my parents that we are educated. They made it happen for me so I will make it happen for my kid(s). It is so important to dream. It is so important to have goals.

Honey! I’m definitely happy to always say that I’m not from here. #HaitianPride ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾 I came here when I was 16 years of age. My mom died I couldn’t go to her funeral. We watched this on tape right in our living room. I walked across stage, graduated high school but sat for a good chunk of time waiting for my immigration status to clear (no it wasn’t gap year. It was painful). I’ve worked really hard to be where I am today! But It saddens me even more to see what other immigrants have to go through what’s happening today.
