Some history on the music: The rhythm of this song comes from the Bolivian-Aymara genre called saya-caporales, regularly confused with the AfroBolivian saya, which is faster. The origins of the caporales dance are indigenous Aymara and precolonial (and concern the sacred lake), however the colonial interpretation or narrative (partly from the state's agenda to make Aymara ceremony patrimony or property of Bolivia) has to do with the story of how, during the Spanish conquest, enslaved Native Americans were captured to replace the enslaved Africans that were dying from the toxicity and high altitudes of the Bolivian mines (alto Peru). According to the Spaniards' own written accounts, Native Americans were seen by the Spanish as a free renewable resource for labor, as slaves that weren't taxable, and therefore routinely kept off record. As a method to enslave the Aymara nation, the Spanish appropriated the Inka's mita system, which was understood as a sacred (ritual) obligation of work for the community. As the abolitionist waves came through Bolivia during the 19th century, Native Aymara people would not get to know legal freedom from slavery and the hacienda system until the mid 20th century (1950's).
