John Legend: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- At 34, John Legend has sold millions of records, won nine Grammys, collaborated with many of the biggest stars in music (Jay-Z, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, The Roots, et al), and achieved the kind of statesmanlike musical-ambassador status usually afforded to artists twice his age. He is, in short, the sort of star who doesn't usually perform behind desks in offices.
But once we'd wedged a piano back there, Legend sounded perfectly at home. His rich, soulful voice never suffered for a lack of processing and production as he performed three songs for NPR Music and a few hundred of our rapt coworkers, loved ones and hangers-on.
Though he recently released a fine new album titled Love in the Future, from which "Made to Love" and "All of Me" were drawn for this set, Legend took special care to provide the backstory for "Move," which he'd recorded for the soundtrack to 12 Years a Slave. Legend executive-produced that soundtrack himself - don't be surprised if you wind up hearing him perform "Move" again on Oscar night - and recorded the album version with U.K. musician Fink. Here, though, it's stripped down considerably, with just Legend's piano and the acoustic guitar of guest Bobby Anderson providing accompaniment.
Legend doesn't play settings this intimate very often, and it's not as if he has anything to prove at this point in his career. But, just in case he did, he retains a busker's lung capacity, the charisma of a born star and the easygoing grace of a performer fit for any stage - even a tiny one. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

John Legend's voice is made of the crackling of a fireplace, hot chocolate, and fuzzy slippers on a christmas morning.
made my day!cheers :)
Lol it’s true
All of me loves all of you
MusingsofaJay♡ wow perfect description
Beautiful description!
One of the great voices of our times. How effortless he makes it seem.
John Legend dun took off HAM ON THIS RIGHT HERE! *A U T H E N T I C V I E W S D O W T C O W M* dun took his career off 2 the next level fr fr no cap
Gotta tell this story, it was the 4th of July 2014 and I was back home in Philly. They put on a free concert in the park before the fireworks and it was cold and rainy and everyone was miserable. 3 groups performed and they got out of there after 15 mins or 3 songs apiece. John Legend came out in the rain and proceeded to sing soaking wet for 45 mins and by the end of his concert everyone was up and dancing and singing along. I've been a fan ever since.
His voice is velvet autumn air
I felt that comment on a spiritual level 😂
I love how you describe his voice!! Totally agree
Hello Dana how are you doing...?
That was so deep
So effortless it's almost unfair how much talent he has.
He sure worked hard for it!!
Know what u mean though...
Yeah, he said at an interview that he worked very hard for reaching that level
Amazing!
And we dont see all the work behind
His brother is just as good if not better look up Vaughn Anthony
John Legend is such a refreshing and creative breeze in the stale music business. So much of the river of sublime tradition flows through him. I hear Nat King Cole, Sam Cook, Mahalia Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Marvin Gaye and so many other greats in him...classical, pop, jazz, blues...He sings, writes, plays...what a deep and wide fountain...
Brian Walsh I agree! I would love to hear him and Adele do a duet! That would be amazing.
And Donny Hathaway
Brian Walsh well said
Chocolate Bunni nice addition. Agreed
I just so fully agree. He’s my biggest musical inspiration
This version of Made to Love is way better than the album version
Yeah, it's so raw, which brings out the authentic beauty of the track. A song like that is better stripped down and not produced. Some of Legend's tracks suffer from overproduction, which isn't a fault of his. It's just the industry. Anyway, I loved this version so much. Watched it three times.
ben bdippin big facts
Yes, I agree! I played it like 5 times in a row LOL
thats true about most tiny desk performances
This version - that he just sat down and belted out solo in one take. So impressive.
Hands down, one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard.
Agreed
His voice is crazy good. One of the best voices mankind has ever heard. Word.
Nasir V this is facts... Imma big fan of his vocal ability and writing
Nasir V
You haven't heard alot then.
well, one of the best of the ones that are still alive :D
Hello Layne how are you doing..?
PLEASE get D'angelo on here!!!
+One2three4abc For real tho
ahh d angelo the modern black music goddess
He would KILL!
goddess?
Yes!!!
I don't think I could handle seeing him live. Not without embarrassing myself.
Saw him in a small theater in Bellingham, WA in 2014. I can barely listen to his records anymore because they don't compare to his live performance.
Hilarious
His live performance is unreal. an addiction, you will have a hard time listening to the CD after hearing the real thing. His talent is so amazing
He is literally amazing live!!!
Hello Tami how are you doing...?
Very enjoyable. No high-effects video required, just a good audio and video engineer, and a performer who lives in the song.
This is the perfect combo. I love both NPR & John Legend.
They worked very well together as you have said. Cheers!
I want to live forever in a captured moment of John’s voice. Like trying to stop a wave from returning back to the ocean. Impossible. Just hold onto the memory.
Man those first few notes of Made to Love were amazing. Brought me back to his first album...blissful and memorizing vocals...pure talent and those keys! 😫😍
the voice crack at 12:50 is why I love live music so much. It reminds us that behind all the watered down crap we hear on the radio that's polished to perfection there is still a human behind the music. Hearing absolute masters make mistakes reminds me that we are all mortals and nothing should be as perfect as the fake world we live in wants us to believe it is.
Anyone here from 2019? John Legend's voice never gets old!
I could just listen to him talk for hours
"We were made to laur"
hahahaha... so true
Herman Pettersen loool 😂😂
Herman Pettersen damn straight...:D
hahahaha
Herman Pettersen 😂😂😂
Beautiful. He's one of the best singer/composer at this time. wonderful.
I feel so lucky to say that my generation produced such a legendary talent like John Legend.
One of the great voices of our times. How effortless he makes it seem.
"Made to Love" is hands down sounds the best - to me. I still find it funny some think he's autotuned, in an office, with a crowd, while he has so many vocal fluctuations in his music which sound amazing.
"Made To Love" 0:05
"Move" 6:26
"All Of Me" 10:32
I salute you

A Jamie Foxx tiny Desk Concert would be AMAZING!
yes please
J-Foxx would be sick
im still waiting Jamie Foxx would be amazing.
yes. His last album Hollywood was so underrated.
YES
I was asked to cover All of Me and I refused. How can I cover a song that is just done so well by this man? I'd be a fool.
Did you ever cave in? It's such an amazing song.
I watch this over and over for his rich voice and those damn expresssions. He has such a captivating face.
there is so much purity in his eyes. hes got so much love and kindness like within him, u can feel from his music. oh i love him.
Tiny desk allows artists to be raw, intimate and real. Love the talent - stripped of all the glitter and being intimate with it 💚
We are all witnessing a LEGEND! We should all be thankful that John Legend exists. NPR you guys should be very proud at what you have created, I cant say enough about tiny desk.
The best thing to come out of Clark County Ohio ever!!! Sheer talent. Class. Thank you John Stevens for sharing your talent with us. Cheers from Park Layne!!!
I think I'd give up a limb to have his voice.
I couldn't believe it when John said he wrote a song with Fink... OMG! He is such an underrated songwriter... Maybe John will help him getting the views he deserves! These two together are awesome...
Don't get me wrong, and this is the first time I saw this clip. I love John any day, but there is no way he can ever come close to Fink's version of this song (it's called Move on me, not Move btw).
Hello Aga how are you doing...?
I'm goose-bumped by the soothing sound of both John and the guitarist around 9:30
:That part always makes a mighty "move" on me. On repeat since 2014.
I am so stunned by the intimacy NPr has created in this "tiny desk" set....my favorite artists sound even better to me when playing for this audience in this setting. T pain was great, Lianne LaHavas., Deqn Sue, Adele, Natalie Merchant, Sun Ra Arkestra (wow! peeled my wig), oh oh oh EDmar Castaneda !!!! how super special that was......
Hello Kim how are you doing...?
Sweet like honey. I could listening to John Legend Live all day and night. Thanks NPR😍
Criminally underrated.
'sold millions of records, won nine Grammys'... mhmm
SpikeSpiegel And still underrated. Not that many millions either.
Should count him lucky, even with great skill at something you can't expect a certain amount of success. Take William Blake as one example.
anderson paak
true but hes just starting
john legend's voice is always so rich and soulful, such a classy lad~
Lost count of how many times I've watched this. This is fantastic.
On a side note, I desperately need the tabs for "Move." My gosh ❤️
This is the perfect combo. I love both NPR & John Legend.
This is, by far, one of the best performance that I've ever seen in Tiny Desk. I can't stop watching it...
Just keep thinking of jamie foxx's impersonation of him lol
yeaahhhh no shit😂😂😂
IKR
I thought I was the only one
me too. That impression was spot on.
DeathnoteIsTheLife 😂
All of Me is a song i can never get over... it describes love in the realest of ways. Everytime i listen to it, i smile
Listen to the jazz All of Me, it's better:)
how can you even end such a performance with humility? I'd be like "I know right? 😎"
This is easily the best version of "Made to Love"
The album version and his other live performances of this song just seem rushed.
He makes music sound effortless. Incredible.
God damn, you're hot! :)
Hello Deann how are you doing ...?
His voice is so crisp and pure it’s like he’s almost lipsyncing from his album.
He made it sound so effortless. John is dope. Great performance.
He almost seems sad. His voice is like a sip of scotch, exuding a smokey resonance reminiscent of the draw from a cuban cigar maybe? He just sounds so good.
TroubleinZION ❤
Beautiful simile. You describe it so beautifully.
TroubleinZION I couldn't say any better..
You sir have a way with words
WOW....the sip of scotch so perfectly describes his voice
All of Me always brings a tear to my eye. Such a powerful and deep song.
i only thought i loved that song before now.
John is so talented!! Thanks Tiny Desk for featuring so much amazing talent!!
John Legend is astounding.......thanks for posting this!
Everyone who sings from the heart makes it look easy

I rarely use the term "Musical Genius", but here it applies.
This, People...THIS!!!! Look into the audience. Just Look at the diversity of the crowd. All the walks of life represented. No one cares about the religious beliefs of the person standing beside them. No social status hierarchy, not a care in the world for 15 minutes. Just humans, being human. Great music can move mountains, great musicians touch your soul. John Legend is one of those people that can do both.
Why must someone always post a comment like this?
I want you to make a movie like the lion king but with humans :D
What the fuck has that got to do with anythin?
owenmcburns nothing at all just words that i felt were needed
I like your conviction. Now, in response to your request, there is a stage play of the lion king, or you could just watch hamlet.
00:00 Made To Love
6:25 Move
10:32 All Of Me
“Move” was AMAZING. I felt the raw emotion in my soul. Such a powerful message. Well done John Legend 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
So nobody’s gunna talk
About John’s poreless and seemingly flawless complexion?
Thought I just clicked on a glossier ad...
Skin and vocal dexterity is like butta😩✨ HOW SWAY?!
i just stared at him...
He looked a little bit ashy to me
✨Pure heart✨Pure soul✨Pure gift✨Pure gold
Thank you, John. The Love in your voice brings much needed Light to the planet.May you and Your Family Be Forever Blessed, Sweet Brother
yep this guy deserves everything he has going for him he's amazing
Tiny Desk, Big Voice
Here hear. ..
How can't we love his voice. Smooth like a butter, sweet like a candy.
I Love this perfomance . I Love John Legend so much. His voice is extremely comforting to me.
Why do I feel like he just kissed all my scars and made me smile? Thx. The Legend!!!
I like how they showed the crowd. It seems like they only show it if it's a sea of humanity.
Thank you so much to Tiny desk NPR Music....a wide variety of music and artists, a great concept! To hear JL in this way is brilliant... :-) Compliments to the sound team once again.
waiting for Childish Gambino
Are you eating though?
where that Redbone? !?! straight acoustic
Yes, but I would like it if he would also play some songs from before this last album
Yes! We need Bino, please! But he is obviously super busy lately filming and voice acting.
you must not watch Atlanta lol
saw him live, probably one of the best performances I have heard live.
do we ever stop and wonder, all of me is actually one of the greatest love songs of all time, really defined this generation.
He has a beautiful voice, but that piano playing.. Wow! Such a talented artist.
Hello Carla how are you doing...?
If they ever make a movie about Sam Cooke, John should play him.
Where is that movie?! I need it lol
I hear you, but listen to Aloe Blacc cover Change Is Gonna Come
I need that movie in my lifetime.
@@joannwood2854 hello Joann how are you doing..?

John Legend's voice is 1 of the best voices in popular music! He is one of my favorite singers and this video reminds me of why!!!
We were made to love 2020 who is here with me!
Thank you NPR! I love these intimate sessions with world class musicians.
This mans voice is so rich. I remember seeing him for the first time singing on a hip hop song. And I am so glad he made it. His voice was always something special.
One of the best voices in popular music hands down. "All of Me" is one of the best love songs ever written. Congrats to John and Chrissy on the birth of their baby girl!

Ahhhh John Legend ❤️
After watching this yesterday I had to watch it the minute I woke up, so beatiful! 😇
Yes, John Legend. A gift to all of us. His phrasing....oh, my. I am reminded of the pianist Bill Evans. I hear the same excellence listening to John sing. The perfect turn of a melody. Egad, he's just so good.

Hello how are you doing...?
A Masterpiece.John’s sultry voice and heartfelt lyrics often move me to tears, but if I didn’t know better he seems heartbroken during his performance!🤔
I always love John Legend concerts, though obviously this is different, but they always attract such a wide range of people. It's beautiful.
goosebumps are an understatement.
Wish there would be an NPR tiny desk session of another talented John: Mr. Mayer. John Legend, as always, makes my soul happy with his amazing talents 👏
JOHN MAYER PLEASE!
The timbre of his tone is the money. It's a whole industry
Love this program. Shout out to NPR and all the guest for the pure music.
