The role of Nick Arnstein was very difficult. It required someone who had sex-appeal; charm and who would not come across in any way as lecherous or as a sort of "male chauvinist". Also, the actor had to have real on-screen chemistry with Streisand. Omar Sharif fit the bill in every way. His graceful and subtle performance complemented Streisand and he never tried to upstage her. The audience believed the romance. Omar Sharif was smooth without being oily; romantic without coming on too strong. He deserves a great deal of credit for making "Funny Girl" the classic film it is.

SO AGREE. You stated this beautifully. It was a tough role and I can't think of anyone else who could have pulled it off like he did.

I just watched the movie and it was incredibly subtle. He defied my expectations every time he appeared on screen. It is indeed a tough role. A tough balancing act that few could pull off. I was lost just as Fanny was.

He created a mysterious, unattainable model of male charisma that made the story magic whenever he appeared onscreen

His acting was so good in that movie. Remember the scene where he’s playing poker and he folded his hand. The look on his face, you just knew that he had a good hand but he lacked confidence to play the hand. It was very good acting with no dialogue at that moment.

I was in love with him all my life. Wish I'd known he wanted someone to take him out to dinner in his old age.

as an Egyptian i have noticed that when people leave Egypt and go to a western country they get more lighter skin over the years. omar sherif had a much darker skin tone when he was acting in egypt.

The least engaged interviewer in history. He’s actually looking down, appearing to be NOT interested, as Mr. Sharif explains the historic casting of Funny Girl. Wow.

When the film adaptation of Jule Styne and Bob Merrill's Funny Girl was being cast at Columbia, there was certainly no question that Streisand would repeat her signature role of Fanny Brice in the film. However, the casting of the role of Nick Arnstein, played on stage by Sydney Chaplin, was more difficult. There was some initial discussion of Frank Sinatra playing the role, but Sinatra was believed to be too old at 52, and the score was weighted entirely in favor of Streisand. Others, including David Janssen were also considered, but the role ultimately went to Sharif, who was excellent.

Honestly to say, I even cried when I heard about his loneliness last years😭. How could this be possible? I am so sad to hear that. The life is such strange thing, he had so many women and could not find right woman. Maybe it was the price for the fame he had. Rest in peace, dearest Omar 🙏. You always will be missed!

Mrlmiller07: There certainly was a question if she would play the role. What gave her the film role wasn’t that she did it on Broadway, had successful television specials, public appearances or hit recordings. It was due to her doing the London production and. THAT guaranteed her the film role. She only did the role s few months as she was pregnant. David Jansen was very high on the list until Sharif’s name was an option, possibility and then reality. Sydney Chaplin? Not a snowball’s chance in hell.

William Wyler may have seemed old to a young Omar, but he certainly wasn't 80. At the time of Funny Girl he would have been about 65/66. He wasn't quite 80 when he died in 1981.
