Fishing Mangroves... Tips for Catching Mangrove Jack

Fishing mangrove lined creeks and estuaries for mangrove jack can be a daunting experience for many anglers. Not only do you have to contend with the size of many of these mangrove systems to decide where to fish, but then there's the best techniques, lures and rigs.
This video takes a look at a few basic tips and considerations when skip casting and pitching weedless lures into mangroves that will hopefully help you catch more fish.

G’day @bigglyguy8429, it’s a pink fish tag. It has a unique ID number and a web address where anglers can report a recapture. Helps monitor fish stocks (movement, growers, numbers etc).

@@sportfishingjunkie I'm putting a new Yammy 2 stroke on my little sailing boat, and my old Honda on a 22ft river boat. Deffo want to learn this type of fishing for the rivers around here. My river boat will be parked on a side stream of a larger, fast flowing river, with a few side bits. Looking forward to casting for mangrove jack and whatever else lurks here. The area is pretty over-fished though

If you're looking at working them on the surface you'll need an EWG (weedless) hook. But they can be used sub-surface on a mustad jighead no problem 👍

I use both but have been only using surface the past few months and in most of my videos. I set myself a challenge of 100 barramundi and 100 Mangrove jack (mangrove snapper) this year on surface. Have over 100 barra and at 97 Mangrove jacks... so close! 😁😎

So you just throw a bead on the hook hey? Nice. Does it affect the hook clearance when it gets hit?

Yep, I cut it down to only a few millimeters in thickness though. It doesn't completely stop it... still working on a better fix. Hook up with jacks don't seem affected but any weedless presentation, especially with the extra bling on the hook may affect barra hookups because of the way they feed. I'll have to do some experimenting & testing and do a video when I have a better solution. Catch Ya! 🎣
