What are your favorite travel essentials, are there any items you won' t travel without? Thanks so much for watching and let us know if you have any questions in the comments below :)
I used to travel for business and got in the habit of always packing a rubber doorstop -- shove it under the door whenever you're in the room. Better than any lock I've ever found! (I had a colleague who carried two: she'd keep one on the bathroom counter in case she ever had to run and barracade inside. Sounds extreme, but solo females on the road for weeks at a time have seen a lot...)
I´ve found that taking less clothes and shoes is always a good idea. Also, depending on the destination and climate there, you can buy some clothes cheaply if you need them. This is usually true in the warmer countries. Also, in warmer countries, if you wash your clothes and hang them up to dry, they will be dry or mostly dry by morning and then you can just rewear them. I often use a hairdryer (the one provided in your hotel or airbnb) to dry off any clothes that are still slightly damp. I usually use shampoo to handwash my clothes (usually a clear type of shampoo rather than a creamy one and also take a nice new dishwashing sponge and use the same shampoo to wash any cups or dishes if eating in hotel room) and never wear or pack jeans as they are too heavy and difficult to handwash and take ages to dry. Better to take tights and several pairs of leggings which you can even wear on top of each other if it is cold. It is good to take at least one pair of good pants/trousers though. Wearing a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers/trainers on the plane means using up less space in your luggage and less weight. You can pick up things like flip flops and swimsuits, shorts etc at your destination if and when you need them. Good idea to take a plastic cup and plate and cutlery (but good solid ones rather than the cheap plastic ones which can. break, which happened with a pack of forks I bought once from a Spar type shop). Leggings and long sleeved t shirts are my essentials as you can wear some to sleep and wear some outdoors. My final tip, always have a bottle of water that you buy after going through security and have a pack of potato chips and at least one roll of toilet paper in your carry on bag. Good idea to have some small packs of tissues with you too. I have had instances where the flight had delays and/or announced they had no food. At least if you have your own water and snacks, you can take your medications if you need to and survive. If you take enough snacks or buy something to eat in the airport on arrival with you, you can also survive the first night at your hotel without having to go out to find food if you arrive late at night or are just really exhausted after your trip. Also good to take a few lightweight plastic bags to put any unwashed clothes/laundry or shoes into so you can keep them separate from the clean stuff in your bags if you are moving from place to place and need to pack them in a hurry.
Thank you, Camila! Those 22-year old's have more energy than we do but we are always curious about how they are able to do it financially. We are on a tight budget and worked for 30-plus years before we started!😆Thank you for watching our channel!! Cheers!!!🍻
Beginning our journey - literally at the infancy stage of preparing our home for sale. There are obvious stages that follow suit - beginning to travel this summer as empty nester couple (FINALLY). So… cool channel guys, well done!!
After 30 years of travel for months at a time, i pretty much pack like you guys. A couple things, i like pockets on the outside of my bag to pull out or stuff something in it in a hurry. I tend to pack as if im going away for a week, and that covers it almost always. One point though, i always leave room for souvenir shirts or something similar, I usually bring a couple less tshirts, and use the room for the ones i buy on the road. Great video, ill be showing my girlfriend and get her packing!
Definitely helpful. I lean toward the Brian type packing or even less. The quick dry material makes sooo much sense as well as layering. I dislike luggage fees. Thanks!
I have that identical black bag and the strap works almost doubled and fed through belt loops. Its flat enough to fit under a shirt and everything is close to your body. The straps have strong hooks and make it possible to use in belt mode and long enough for a crossbody when out and about or a wallet in another bag. Enjoy your travels and stay safe and healthy
Hi! It's such a great bag/purse... and has certainly stood the test of time from me! I love how versatile it is, like you said more like a wallet in a larger bag. Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻
Great video. The only thing I'd add is a couple of fast drying convertible pants, a fanny pack, cord to hang clothes and safety pin that doubles as clothes pin. Oh, and I bring an umbrella which has always been used.
Great job, guys! I've been binge watching you since yesterday. And I subscribed. On my last trip to Europe, a few months ago, the lady at immigration asked me (with a stern look,) "why have you packed such a little amount of things?" I, answered, "because I've learned how to pack after traveling for so long." She smiled a little after my answer.😀 Headed to Portugal for 10 days in 3 weeks. Keep traveling and stay safe!
That is really funny 😊 - it is a skill learned as you travel more that is for sure. Nothing like hauling around things you don't need for months on end, not fun! We learned so much after this packing video and lightened the load considerably for our trip to SE Asia.
Great tips well presented. One of the things I learned to maximize space is to roll your clothing items tightly. You wont believe how much extra space it creates. So far on our couple of 3 week trips to Europe, we have managed with one duffel, and a backpack for each of us. Reason for the duffel being practically no weight. We were well under the limit on weight imposed by local European Airlines and were always under 8Kg / 18 lbs. The only hassle with the duffel being having to hand carry it. Of course for the longer trip like yours what you have presented is ideal, and you just pay for one large check in when flying. Great job guys. Just got back from the Greek island and Amalfi coast, Naples area 3 week trip and trying to catch up on your Vlogs. Cheers.
Thanks, CM! Glad you made it home safe and sound and great tips on the duffle bags. Catch up on those vlogs more are coming your way soon!!! Cheers!!!🍻
I’m so glad you did this video! I really enjoyed it! I was one of the scores of people that told you I wanted to see it! Of course, that was before I embarked on my 4 1/2 month trip that I’m currently on. But I will be doing this every year, so it’s always good to pick up new tips and continue to experiment with ways to downsize and pack lighter 😉👍🙌
We are so happy to hear you found the video helpful! I know for us this will be a continual learning process that will also vary based on the location we are traveling to. Enjoy your current travels 😊 Cheers🍻
Yes, Carrie that looked like a lot of clothes to me 🤣… last summer when I went overseas I brought one pair of yoga pants, one carat of black jeans, one pair of capris, one pair of long hiking pants, one pair of shorts. Only one of everything! I don’t wear tank tops at all, but I do need to wear a skirt at least once a week so I have skirts to go with my nicer tops
Hey fellow "Hamster" - Thanks so much for watching :) I love the saying on that bag...so fitting! I got it as a little gift while at my old job, so no better use than taking on this adventure! Thanks again for your support, we appreciate it. Cheers🍻
I love this video. As someone who has been on hundreds of trips over the years, it took me a long time to optimize my packing. I also hate flip flops Brian, but they are great in hostels/zimmers/etc. especially in the bathrooms. I have the added weight of a full camera gear setup (DSLR), laptop, associated adapters/chargers. You definitely learn what you actually need vs what you think you need after a few trips. I know it sounds weird, but I also pack clothes that are about worn out (socks, underwear, t-shirts that are basically ready to throw out) and on the trip in the trash they go. Out with the old, in with the new. I also make sure to leave space for souvenirs. Anything essential always goes in carryon (I mostly travel all carryon now, even for trips as long as 30 days.... yes, it's an art not a science). Again, great video!
We are looking at heading to Dublin in early spring this year and plan to do just that. We will toss out the cool weather clothes before heading south to the warmer climates. We seem to pack less each time we head back out. 😃
I LOVE my Eagle Creek travel bags! They make, or at least used to make a carry on bag that you zip a backpack to. You have an extendedable handle to roll both bags as one, backpack straps to carry both on your back or one on the back and one on your front. I would roll up to check in, unzip the backpack and never had a problem. Once in the Airbnb I would leave the carry on and just walk around with the back pack.
That's a great way to do it, Jerry. I am finding that my carry-on has enough room to toss my backpack in and just use my sling on the plan. Less is more when traveling the way we do. Safe travels!! Cheers!!🍻
I always like a fast drying towel, great for cleaning up spills and drying off after beach, never use any other towels or as a sheet to sleep on or extra blanket on plane.
One pink one blue ..... They are great you two.... Went to the Seattle Away store. Showed them your video at the store. Picked up the ones with the battery.... Our six year old carry on luggage were falling apart... Love the lifetime warranties....great Advice...
That's great guys! We just dragged ours through the streets of Oradea. Our airbnb isn't ready so stopped at a coffee shop and plugged in! Love it! Cheers 🍻
If weather is nice, ive gone for over a month with jus a small backpack. Must haves include, bandanas, ( so versitile), quick dry dress, a spoon, compact rain jacket ( also use for warmth), wool socks, hand sanitizing wipes, sawyer bottle top water purifier ( if needed). Bathing suit that can also be used as undies and bra. Loose shorts comfy enough to also sleep in....everything must serve multiple purposes.
Just came back to this video. I now do carry on all the time What I found is I had a personal shoulder strap bag for under the seat on the plane like Carrie. I found it to hard when disembarking & embarking planes through Asia when I had to do it on the tarmac or even just stairs at stations with my carry on & shoulder bag. I have since purchased a leather backpack for under the seat (good size) It is so much easier now when I have to use steps carrying both bags. I now carry the carry on with the backpack on my back I have one hand free. So much easier for me now 😊
Hey guys. Really enjoying your videos. My wife and myself also recently started full time travel and have been documenting it all on UA-cam. Excited to see where you go next
Thank you, Peter!! We will be sure to check out your channel!!! We are always looking to follow some new vloggers!!! Maybe we will run into you two someday, safe travels!! Cheers!!!🍻

What do you do if you decide to take a cruise? What do you wear to go out to dinner. We carry less casual clothes to make room for smart clothes for the cruises. I don’t like underdressing to go to dinners while cruising. I feel like I stand out too much.
The two cruses we went on this year you will not stand out no matter what you wear. We are very light travelers, and we were just fine in shorts and t-shirts. There may be a formal night and you can go to the buffet if they decide to enforce a dress code in the dining hall. Thanks for watching!! Cheers!!🍻
Here is a link to our current packing list, Nikki. brianandcarrie.myflodesk.com/packinglist We started out with too many clothes and camera gear. We just scaled everything back and picked up a few essentials that have made life a bit easier. Our website has a few other links that will give you an idea. Thank you for watching!! ❤ www.brianandcarrietravels.com/
Larry and Minnie are here again.... Carrie, Minnie just bought your bag with the removable bottom via your link... We're going to the store near Seattle to check out the carry on .... Great video thank you...
I’m a little late seeing this video but just recently found your channel and binge watching lol. Really enjoying it. Could you make a video recommending comfortable shoes and sandals for travel and walking.
Great tips, I do throw in a pair of black or khaki golf pants to use as dress pants for nicer dinners or concerts. Thanks for your help. PS. Just landed in Budapest last night cool timing on your last video.
Hi Brian and Carrie, Happy Holidays. Can you please do another packing video or at least update your take along items. It's been a year and would love to know what worked great in the last year and what you've upgraded or changed.
I have been traveling for the last 14 years and I only carry one pair sneakers, one sandals, one flip-flops, and one high heels for dancing. My suitcase content is different than yours, but we all have different style of traveling. Enjoy your travels as I am enjoying mine.
Great video! Thanks for making this packing video. It’s always interesting to see what other travelers’ tips & tricks are. I picked up a few from your video, that I’m going to incorporate into my setup. Happy and Safe Travels! 🍻✈️
Thank you so much!! We were going to be in Poland like you two but switched it up to Portugal! You two should check it out, we absolutely love it here!! Keep those videos coming guys! Cheers!!!🍻
We are packing even less when we leave for SE Asia 1st of January. I like the idea of buying as I need. Thank you for watching and for the comment!! Cheers!!🍻
Aw I can truly relate, even I watch so many packing videos. I am a light traveler, often going places with just my bento bag from Nomad Lane. Thought I'd recommend it to you guys for future travels too, it is the best!
Just finished watching this Super helpful video with my wife. This was awesome and extremely helpful! Keep those videos coming. They are helping me in convincing my wife to do something similar to what you guys are doing. THANK YOU 🤗
Thanks, We will be traveling this summer and refuse to pay for luggage, we even joked we would have to travel using the "Jack Reacher" method of packing, but now I see we have options.
Great video! I have been traveling for years but great video! Keep it simple simple simple. I am going to show this video to my wife and see if it has any positive effect after 5 years!
Love it guys! Hopefully you have helped us for our planned vacation to Italy in September. We had planned a trip with my brother and his husband well before we thought there was a chance that we would be on the road in 2023. It seems crazy to think about living out of a carry-on for 6 months. We will see if I can be as low maintenance as Brian. Lol
I'm as low maintenance as it gets Mac!! 😄Life just seems simple with less. We plan on Italy in the fall of 2023. make sure you take notes and pass them on. We would love to hear about your trip!!! Thanks for watching and safe travels. Cheers!!!🍻
We planned this trip a few months ago. We are going to Lake Maggiore. This wasn’t planned as a low-cost trip though. Lol. We went to Italy in 2019 and had planned to go back the very next year. Of course Covid hit and we have had to cancel an Italy trip twice.
Our plan now is to spend all three months in the Schengen area in Italy. Starting in the north and working our way south. That makes things a little more cost-effective for us and we get to experience most of what Italy has to offer.
I have a carry-on that zips to a backpack so you can wheel both but now I usually leave the carry-on at home and just take the backpack. Check out alpaca and merino wool for underwear, socks, t-shirts, and hoody. You can actually wear socks or t-shirts for over a month without washing and it will not smell. Travelling with 2 socks, underwear, t-shirts and shorts drastically cuts down on size of backpack needed.
Marino wool is key to any travel, especially the socks and underwear!! Great tips, Jerry. Thank you for adding to the channel and safe travels!! Cheers!! 🍻
Hi! I started watching your videos because I'm planning to retire this year, and will be traveling to Asia for a year by myself. Your videos are very informative and helpful. I don't know if you already made a video on travel tech, and how to be connected (phone plans/cards?, internet/wifi, Netflix/Amazon/Hulu, travel apps, etc). Also, maybe combine it with banking, credit cards, etc. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Safe travels!
Great questions, Patricia! We have touched on all of that in various videos, however, we are going to do a travel essentials video that will include all that in one video in the coming weeks. So exciting about your retirement and travels to Asia, congratulations! We will be headed to Asia in January for 5 to 6 months. Thank you for watching and safe travels. Cheers!!!🍻
Personally I would not put prescriptions (or eye correction) in carry-on suitcase. I've had too many instances in which I was unexpectedly forced to check my suitcase, which is even smaller than yours. Reasons vary from being over weight to full overhead bins to extremely small overhead bins in small short haul planes. Because of that, I often pack a few essential clothing items in my under-seat bag in case my luggage gets lost, which I see you do too!
We did a video fairly recently in Turkey where we showed our typical day as well as our go to groceries. You may find that interesting ua-cam.com/video/g4i1tLPbVUo/v-deo.html
Great info and thanks for sharing! Really enjoyed last week's video too and I'm so glad you are loving the Algarve. It's actually sunny in Seattle today. Unbelievable! 😅 But I'd still much rather be relaxing on a beach in the Algarve. That day will come again, but in the meantime I'll continue to live vicariously through you two. Thanks for the continued motivation with the vids and keep 'em coming! 🙂👍
Thank you! We are hearing the weather up there is getting better!! Next week's video will be more on the Algarve and beaches in our area. Thanks again for the continued support and well keep 'em coming!! Cheers!!!🍻
This video is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing all your trial and error experience with us. It’s just what we needed to help us make some important adjustments and decisions. You guys rock!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Hello - looking for an update video on how the carry on luggage worked out. Did you miss carrying a flex or a medium ? How did away hold up after 6 months . Happy travels and looking forward to your next travels !
My husband and I just finished watching this packing video of yours and boy did we laugh at ourselves! We started our travel time beginning of August 2022 and first landed in Italy. When we started we had 2 backpacks, a duffle bag, a large rolling 70lb suitcase, 2 blankets and 2 pillows...this was all of our possessions and we thought we had it right....NOT!!! Try fitting all that on a train!!! We downsized even more really fast at each stay and we have our share of "left behinds" too. In the middle of August we let go of the 70lb monster luggage and duffle bag. It is September and we now only own 1 backpack each, a purse and another backpack. Our outfits include 3-4 shirts/blouses, 4 bottoms, 3 pair of underwear, 2 sports bras and a pair of shoes each and a pair of sandles for the Mrs. We plan to buy clothes as we need them and then leave them behind! We have subscribed to your channel and relate to your videos the most of all vloggers. We are looking forward to visiting the Balkins thanks to ya'll😊
Great video. I am closer to Brian's packing style. The major difference between him and myself is I use only backpacks, packing cubes and less camera gear. I suggest a fanny pack or sling bag with RFI blocking for antitheft in foreign countries. However, very good tips and advice.
It's funny that you should mention our differences!! We have learned a few things since shooting that video. Our video coming up this Saturday is an updated packing video for our travels to SE Asia! You may notice that our styles are much closer in this video! 😆Thank you for watching!!! Cheers!!🍻
Those carry on bags are huge. I am always amazed how big carry on is in the US Try a 7 kg total for all carry on limit. And yes my small back pack has been weighed.
We flew all through SE Asia with those restrictions using these bags and only checked our bags once, thankfully. It's hard for anyone to stay under the 7 or 8 kg 🥺
@BrianandCarrie I was curious about that as I will be traveling through SE Asia soon with their 7 kg weight limits. Thanks for the info. I'll be purchasing a bigger carry-on in the future. If I have to check my carry-on once in a while, it's still worth it.
This is inspirational - not sure I’ll get down to carryon only though as we’ll need warmer clothes and hiking gear. What do you do about contingency items (first aid essentials, travel sewing kit etc.)? Would love to see a follow up to know if there’s anything you’d add, in retrospect. 🧡
Hi, Kiara. It is an advantage for us only traveling to warm climates for sure. We should pack a first aid kit, great idea. We are heading to Southeast Asia in January so we will be doing a follow-up video in the coming months. Thank you for the kind words and for watching our channel. Safe travels. Cheers!!!🍻
Great list. Enjoyed your video! Would you make major changes to your packing list if you were planning to spend time in the north (Scandanavia, Russia, Canada, Alaska) as opposed to a Caribbean/South Pacific itinerary?
Hi, Ray!! We would most defiantly have to change the way we pack. We have found that we can make do with very little so adding warm clothes to our carry-on luggage is possible. For now, we will be chasing the sun! 😀 Thank you for watching! Cheers!!🍻
Great video. Thank you. I’m headed on my scouting trip to Portugal in September. Can you elaborate more on the fire stick extender which you spoke of? If you have a link for the site that would be great and can you tell me why you needed it and what you used it for. Thanks so much. Keep the videos coming!
Hi, Lynn. We had an Airbnb that had the TV mounted to the wall. Not a big deal but the fire stick plug-in on this particular TV was on the back and we needed the extender to get to it. The fire stick kit that you can buy comes with an extender. The link is in the video description. Thank you for watching and safe travels!!! Cheers!!!🍻
Thanks for your video. They are gold information. Could you do a video of the non-turist areas to visit in Spain, Portugal …etc. there is practically nothing online. We like to travel and visit what the locals visit.
Hi, Francisco. We are in Romania now but we can tell you that any town\city you go to has a non-tourist, local side. We love to get out to a local restaurant or pub. It is usually less expensive and authentic. We are getting a lot of suggestions on local places to eat while here in Romania and show a few in our Brasov video coming out tomorrow. Love the video idea! Thank you! 🍻 Cheers!!!🍻
Hi Brian and Carrie. I have stumbled upon your videos and love them, like so many do. My husband and are traveling for three months with carry on only as well. It’s a game changer. Carrie, did you get the Weekender bag or the mini Weekender bag? I think it’s time to advance from my basic Adidas backpack as my personal item! I clicked your link above but just want to double check! Thanks a ton!
Hi! I have the mini weekender convertible and love it. I have heard from others the customer service isn't very good with that company, I haven't needed to use it. But I do like to put that out there so you're aware 😊
I was so smug finally wearing my REI belt (purchased through your link) through security in Spain that I forgot I was wearing Birkenstocks with metal buckles. Epic security fail. 😂😂😂
Hi Sue, we have used packing cubes in the past. We found they are great to keep everything separated and organized but didn't find that they saved us any space. We will see how it works out not using them and see what we think when returning home in Nov. Thanks for watching!! Cheers!!!🍻
I like your travel slippers, can you tell us where you got them? The one item if find essential is a toilet kit, not a bath room kit, but one for going to the toilet, let me explain. In China, the toilets in bus stations and rail stations can leave a lot to be desired! They are usually squat toilets, often there is not hook on the door, the floor is wet with what I cannot imagine, and the lock on the door is missing. You DO NOT want to put your coat or bag on the wet floor! So in a small Ziploc bag I carry two "S" hooks to hang my bag and coat over the door, a portable door lock from Amazon and some toilet paper (you never know!) I would not travel without it!
We got them at a grocery store in Santorini 🤣... They were about $3 and we loved them. We since replaced them with similar ones commonly found at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Great tips on the essential bag... That is always a gray area.
Very nice! Thank you guys! We’re also using Away luggage for years and very happy with it. Are all of your clothes wrinkle-free? When you traveled with your bigger suite cases, did you take them to your seat with you or had to leave in the designated area out of site? We had to do that years ago in Italy and it kept me alarmed during the travel.
We love our away luggage so far!! Yes, all of our clothes are wrinkle-free, that would have been nice to mention in the video!!😄 When we had the large suite cases we did have to leave them in the designated area of the train. Something else that we should have mentioned in the video!!! We didn't like doing that either!! Thank you so much for watching and supporting our channel!! Cheers!!!🍻
Carrie - I was wondering if you've found you've needed a skirt or dress since downsizing? Is it outdated to think I would want one for visiting a church or attending a performance? EDIT: as a hiker, wanted to share that women can also find some great quick-dry undies and even soft bras and camis, along with clothing. If you don't have access to a washer, you can sink-wash, roll in a towel and hang dry; small items often dry in a few hours, the rest overnight. Merino wool undies and clothing is also AMAZING, even in hot weather, and best of all it doesn't retain odors and breathes much better than tech fabrics. Great brands I love: ExOfficio, Patagonia, REI, SmartWool, Ice Breaker... and even Duluth Trading has some nice wicking undies!
Hi Marijka! Those are all great suggestions, thank you... I'm going to look at some of these brands I haven't heard about. As far as needing a dress I would say no, not in the areas we've been so far. I did purchase a sundress after we got to Portugal and have loved a different option to wear. I will also be changing up my packing when we head to South East Asia and will be adding a few skirts/dresses. Mainly for the comfort and ease but also to be respectful when entering temples. Thanks for watching 😊
Great video! One question - guess you haven't been to Asia yet but lots of discount airlines there have a crazy limit of only 7 kg cabin baggage and allow only 1 bag. Guess you'll have to check in the trolley then which would cost extra as well.
We have been to SE Asia and only had to check our bags once. We also had to flying Turkish Airlines. But Ryanair we have had no problems. Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers!
@@BrianandCarrie Great! If you can figure out a packing hack within 7 kg of a single carry on bag, please let me know. I so much want to show it off to these airlines! 😛
Great video ! I did not see use of packing cubes . Is it more space with folding clothes vertically vs packing cubes. Also did you find the away luggage better than other carry on ? Thanks and safe travels !
We did use packing cubes our first time out but decided we liked folding our clothes vertically better. You can see everything in its place and we love our away luggage! Thank you for watching and supporting us! Cheers!!!🍻
Great video! But I am curious that whether you have the same packing for both cold season and summer seasons. Your video did encourage me to plan traveling full time. I am wondering whether I should still rent a storage to keep my stuff and switch my gear every 6 month. Can you share how you manage various weather conditions with traveling full time outside?
Hi, Jerry. We have cold-weather clothing stored in a family member's house for when we return home for the holidays. Other than that we try to only travel to warm destinations. We are currently in Thailand and did a more recent packing video on how we changed it up for this stretch of our travels. Thank you for watching and safe travels!! Cheers!!🍻
Hi Guys! Thanks so much for this video. I just started a 4 months trip and already start to regret bringing a check-in bag. I could already see most of the clothes will not be worn.
Thank you I love that one. What about the smaller black bag Carrie has for bathroom products, camera, etc where did you get that one from? Seems like it holds a lot for overseas travel. Coming to Europe in August for a month and my boyfriend and I have been spam watching your videos 🙂💕 TYSM! You guys rock
We Love your videos. Hey Brian do you think having a collared shirt would be useful? Also I can not find the links to buy the Away bags for your commission? Oh Carrie how do you dry your hair, do you get AirBnBs with Hair dryers?
Thank you!! I haven't needed a collared shirt for anything. If I ever find that I do I will buy one while traveling. we find that most Airbnb has hair dryers, only one time have we come across one without one. All our links are in the video description, here is the one that you are looking for. Thank you!!! AWAY Bigger Carry-On: referrals.awaytravel.com/away945738
Very helpful;! So how about ironing clothes (travel iron), do you use laundromats for washing?, do you use wallets or travel wallets or just loose currency and cards in the small purse? do you use safes for your valuables at places you stay? And I guess if you are not creating looks for your insta travel photos - it is easy go with the basics you outlined! I saw one guy on UA-cam that puts all his electronics in his carry on backpack in case they insist on checking in carry on luggage (sometimes happens) so he does not lose his expensive equipment in case luggage does not show up along with some basics to live on while waiting for his lost luggage in case that happens.
Hi Esther! Most Airbnbs have irons and we always book accommodations with a washing machine. We use cards and small currency and we will use a safe when available. We carry our electronics in our backpacks most of the time. With carry-on only we always have our valuables close by. We recently did a video on our most common questions and one on traveling safely where we go into more detail on some of your questions but that is the just of it. Thanks again!! Cheers!!!🍻
Great video... Definitely make sure to apply to be an amazon affiliate if you haven't already for the product links. I'm sure the viewers would love to make sure you get a cut of the recommendations that you so neatly organized and presented.
How much are you carrying in terms of weight? Some European airlines have reduced limits like: - Handbag / Carryon Weight: 8kg (17 lb 10 oz) Size: Length × Width × Height => 40 × 23 × 55 cm (or 15.748 x 9.055 in x 21.65 in) - Small Item Weight: 4kg (8 lb 13 oz) - Check-in Weight: 23 kg ( or 50 lb 11oz) Size (length + width + height) = 158 cm (max) (or 62 in)
Newer subscribers here... with a silly question.... but Carrie the tank you are wearing in this video do you know the brand? Wondering if it's a nicer brand that travels well or just a regular run of the mill.... lol! Great info you all put out. Cheers to enjoying life!
Great question! I always love finding easy-to-travel items, the key being they wash and hang to dry well. These are the ones I have here: amzn.to/3uJhrx6 Cheers!!
Great presentation you two! And yes, Chilon of Sparta was on to something ('less is more.'). I personally like to use packing cubes with my checked luggage. Perhaps it speaks to my nature. I found useful tips in your video just the same and, I will be using them shortly. Carrie, have you ever considered a gig with QVC? No kidding! I will be out of touch for awhile, prison, but I look forward to binge watching when I have access. We actually leave for the Amazon, not the online retailer, this next weekend and will be gone for several months. To your road ahead! Cheers and I don't know what happened to my emojis. PS: Interesting differences in unpacking styles. Carrie, I'll place everything neatly to the side. Brian, I'll give it a toss to the side. Ha-Ha!
Brad!! 😆😆 Carrie could be on QVC for sure!! We have used packing cubes in the past. We decided not to this time except for my flip-flops, which I never wear, and sundry items because I don't have a toiletry bag. We would love to hear more about your Amazon adventure someday!! Cheers and safe travels!!!🍻
Thanks again guys. Very informative. Do you have some kind of converter with the adapter you were talking about? I wouldn't want anyone to "nuke" their devices. It's 220 in Spain, not sure about Portugal.😊👍👍
Hi William! Thanks for watching. The adapter we use does let us know what voltage that we will be running with and does have a surge protector. The specific things that we would have issues with are my hair straightener and I specifically purchased one with a converter in it. Thanks for mentioning that though, it's something people do need to be aware of when traveling. Cheers 🍻
Brian and Carrie thank you so much for sharing these very useful tips and information. With regard to razors I believe you mentioned it was packed. Do you pack this in the carry on or buy at destination?
Here in Australia most of the airlines are 7kgs only carryon. I’m off to Vietnam in July & purchased the PE ticket with 15kgs carryon …….. happy days 😊
Great idea planning ahead. We are in Vietnam now and haven't had any issues with carry-on frying Air Asia and Vietnam Air. We will be flying out of Da Nang next week and see what happens. We are loving Vietnam by the way!! Thank you for watching and safe travels!! Cheers!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie yes Vietnam is great, spent 4 weeks while doing a 6 month trip through Asia just before COVID hit & loved it. Heading back for another month & staying at An Bang Beach in Hoi An. I just loved An Bang 💙 Air Asia & VA are great airlines, enjoy everything Asia has to offer guys safe travels ✈️🌎
We just returned to Da Nang after spending two days in Hoi An! Such a fun place. We will not be getting to Laos or Cambodia this year but planning on coming back in January 2024 for another tour of the region. Thank you for watching!! Cheers!!🍻
Thank you Brian & Carrie! This is very helpful video. Your videos are very inspirational. We hope to start traveling soon. We had a question about prescriptions. How do you refill them while traveling? Also what about annual medical checkups? Thanks!
Thanks, Jay and Nandita!! Well-checks outside the US are inexpensive enough to pay out-of-pocket and the medical care is up to par in most cases. As far as prescriptions go, we haven't tried to fill ours yet. This is something we will try here in Portugal and see what we need to do. This may be an out-of-pocket expense as well. My inhaler cost $45 per in the US WITH medical insurance. We will keep you posted on what we find out!! Cheers!!🍻
Love the tips! My husband and I are in need of new carryons but can’t seem to find the discount code for the Away Luggage, also checked your website store. Can you point me in the right direction?
Thank you! We no longer have a discount code for Away luggage and do not receive any type of commissions. With that being said we love our luggage, and we highly recommend it!! Cheers!!🍻
No we don't. Since we are carry on only, weight is also a big concern. So compressing and fitting more doesn't always work in our favor. But I do know many use them and love them.
Very helpful , just wondering how Brian managing without a single pair of formal party wear for the night life not even Jeans , definitely learnt how minimally we can pack and make our travel so comfortable cheers 👏
Hello! Thanks for doing this. I'm hoping to be full-time traveling within the next year, and the thought of going down to carry on only scares me. Yet everyone who travels recommends it. I have two questions after watching your video... 1) I notice you have a travel adapter, but not converter. Have you been fine so far without a converter? Also, unless I missed it, I did not see a hair dryer. Do you find most places you go have one? Or just neither of you need one? Thanks so much!
Hi Michelle! We agree that carry on is the only way to go! As far as a adapter, we haven't needed one for any of our electronics. But I did intentionally purchase a hair straightener and hairdryer that both have dual voltage. Now about the hair dryer...I carried one the first 7 months we traveled and ended up not needing it once as the Airbnbs we stayed in had one. So this 6 months traveling I decided to leave it behind. Of course now I've needed it many times (isn't that the way it goes). I have had many Airbnbs that say they have one and it either isn't there or didn't work (even though I make sure the listing says there is a blow dryer). I asked one place to provide one as it was listed in the Airbnb listing, but in the end this is such a hassle to always worry about or deal with. Needless to say, it WILL be in my bag when we return home over the holidays 😊. Cheers 🍻
Hi, Randell. We don't travel to cold climates. We leave all of our winter clothes in a suitcase back home in a family member's closet. Maybe someday when we feel adventurous we may plan a trip somewhere snowy and cold. For now, we enjoy the warm weather. 😀 Cheers!!🍻
Super useful video! One thing I did not hear mentioned was security items. For example, money belt, hidden passport carrier (where is your passport when out and about?), throw-away second wallet, travel pants with zippered pockets, and, stored separately, scans of your passports, etc.. Do you have a good way to ensure that Brian's phone and Carrie's phone back each other up so they can both always access (e.g., usernames, passwords) important travel info (B&B reservations, tickets, etc.) in case one phone dies?
Hi George. All very good questions!! We do take precautions with usernames, passwords, and scanned documents such as passports, etc. Backing up our phones is a great idea, something we didn't think of. We do lock our valuables in a safe place at our Airbnb. These questions you are asking are fantastic and got us brainstorming on how to deliver your thoughts in a short video. Thank you for your insight! Cheers!!! 🍻
@@BrianandCarrie I'm hyper aware of the phone thing because my phone died minutes after we landed in Sopporo, Japan, a few years ago at the start of our Japan adventure. All of the detailed itinerary was only on my phone, not my wife's. Big mistake. Ugh! Fortunately, I had a hard copy of places and names and was able to reconstruct what I needed but it was a stressful experience. I was using a password vault app on my phone and I had printed out a wallet size 2FA code sheet just for this eventuality. But I never tested it and ... it didn't work. Lesson learned!
Yeah, that would be a bad situation. Carrie uses the password vault app and now I do too!!🙂We haven't had any problems yet but some things are preventable. Thank you for the tips, George.
Extremely insightful. Thank you for including the links. With your plan to make two trips home a year, I am assuming you use that opportunity to switch seasonal attire…correct? Packing for winter must be a little more challenging. Another couple recommended carry extra passport pictures and financial/personal documents that may be needed in case the need arises to apply for a visa. Any thoughts on that? I suspect you have everything electronically to be printed off and you don’t expect the need. Cheers
Hi John! If we were to go to a cold location we would use our trip home to pack differently, yes, however, we do not plan on doing that anytime soon. We will be chasing the sun for as long as possible. We are working on a short video to address financial/personal documents, passports, and a few other precautions to take so stay tuned!!! Cheers!!🍻
What are your favorite travel essentials, are there any items you won' t travel without?
Thanks so much for watching and let us know if you have any questions in the comments below :)
In a bag!always!!!
Thanks for the bag tip!!

Great video!I want to have the slippers that you have! It's a great idea.thanks!God bless u both!
Thanks, Ely! We still use those slippers every day!! Thanks for watching!!

This is some great advice
Oh how refreshing to have non 22 year olds make these sort of videos! LOVE IT guys!
Congratulations, so exciting!!! Thank you so much for the compliment. We are relatively new at this so it's nice to hear!! 🙂
Cheers!!!🍻
After 30 years of travel for months at a time, i pretty much pack like you guys. A couple things, i like pockets on the outside of my bag to pull out or stuff something in it in a hurry. I tend to pack as if im going away for a week, and that covers it almost always. One point though, i always leave room for souvenir shirts or something similar, I usually bring a couple less tshirts, and use the room for the ones i buy on the road. Great video, ill be showing my girlfriend and get her packing!
Great idea on the shirts, Mark. That may be something to keep in mind! Safe travels!
Cheers!!!🍻
Definitely helpful. I lean toward the Brian type packing or even less. The quick dry material makes sooo much sense as well as layering. I dislike luggage fees. Thanks!
We hate luggage fees and I have two shirts I have yet to wear! I can pack even less next time!!!
thank you for watching!!
Cheers!!!🍻
As a person new to this lifestyle, this video is invaluable. Thanks so much!
So happy to hear it was helpful 🙂. We will be doing an updated packing video in the next month.
Cheers!!!🍻
Indeed when you roll your cloths you do not need to iron them to.😊
I loved watching Brian’s face as he watched Carrie unpack everything 😂
😂
I’m so glad you did this video! I really enjoyed it!
I was one of the scores of people that told you I wanted to see it! Of course, that was before I embarked on my 4 1/2 month trip that I’m currently on. But I will be doing this every year, so it’s always good to pick up new tips and continue to experiment with ways to downsize and pack lighter 😉👍🙌
We are so happy to hear you found the video helpful! I know for us this will be a continual learning process that will also vary based on the location we are traveling to. Enjoy your current travels 😊
Cheers🍻
Yes, Carrie that looked like a lot of clothes to me 🤣… last summer when I went overseas I brought one pair of yoga pants, one carat of black jeans, one pair of capris, one pair of long hiking pants, one pair of shorts. Only one of everything! I don’t wear tank tops at all, but I do need to wear a skirt at least once a week so I have skirts to go with my nicer tops
I love a few options - what can I say 😊. As long as it fits in my carry-on with a little room to spare, it was allowed to come along!
Thank you for this. This fellow “Hamster” really appreciates your videos.
“She believed she could, so she did” bag. Love it. ❤️👼🏼❤️
Hey fellow "Hamster" - Thanks so much for watching :) I love the saying on that bag...so fitting! I got it as a little gift while at my old job, so no better use than taking on this adventure! Thanks again for your support, we appreciate it. Cheers🍻
Brilliant video guys 👍I thought I packed light but you two are amazing. Great info and really easy to follow. Thanks 😊
Cheers!!🍻
Just love watching your videos. So refreshing and so honest. You guys seem like such nice people.
Thank you so much! ❤

Thanks, We will be traveling this summer and refuse to pay for luggage, we even joked we would have to travel using the "Jack Reacher" method of packing, but now I see we have options.
We will never check a bag again. Take less and make do!! It's just easier every step of the way! Thank you for watching and safe travels!!

Great video! I have been traveling for years but great video! Keep it simple simple simple. I am going to show this video to my wife and see if it has any positive effect after 5 years!
Thank you, Ian! We believe we could get even more simple than we already are!! Thank you for watching!!

Cheers!! 🍻
@@BrianandCarrie Have you tried any alpaca clothing? Hearing that it is better than merino and flying to Peru this fall using that as an excuse to go.
We have not but we will be in Peru next March. I will have the excuse to buy something while we are there!! 😁
@@BrianandCarrie Will try to find a shop for you and let you know what results I have there.😉
Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you for responding! Hopefully, we'll run into each other somewhere in Asia. All the best to you both!
Thats a great point, Kim. Always keep your valuables close by. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I would love to see you guys grocery shop in other countries just to see your standard purchases and an idea of the cost of food.
We did a video fairly recently in Turkey where we showed our typical day as well as our go to groceries. You may find that interesting ua-cam.com/video/g4i1tLPbVUo/v-deo.html
Thanks

Hello - looking for an update video on how the carry on luggage worked out. Did you miss carrying a flex or a medium ? How did away hold up after 6 months . Happy travels and looking forward to your next travels !
Hi, Sarak. We will be doing a new packing video within the next couple of weeks!! Thank you for watching!!
Cheers!!🍻
Excellent info, thanks again
Our pleasure! 🍻
Hi, Daniela. We thought we had it all figured out the second time out, we will now regroup and packed differently once again for Southeast Asia. 😆
Carry-on luggage is the way to go! I totally agree.
It sure is! A much easier and stress free way to travel!

Cheers!!🍻
Great video
Thank you! Thanks for watching 😊
Cheers!!!🍻
Best packing video ever!
Glad you think so Kimberly!!! 😀
Cheers!!!🍻
Thank you! 🍻
Cheers!!!🍻
HA, too funny!!! As much as we prepare for airport security one of us still get searched half the time!🙄
I once wore a lightweight pair of pants that had sparkles on the back pockets, held in place by metal studs. 🤦🏼 TSA guy laughed his head off.
Have you tried using packing cubes? I love them and they save space
Hi Sue, we have used packing cubes in the past. We found they are great to keep everything separated and organized but didn't find that they saved us any space. We will see how it works out not using them and see what we think when returning home in Nov. Thanks for watching!!
Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie Hi! Sounds great!
Thank you !
Very impressive packing! Way to pack light :)
Yes! And we haven't needed anything we left behind!! Yet!!
great video guys, super handy. I also think Less is More! btw. where from US are you from?
Hi, Karel! We are from Bellingham WA. about 100 miles north of Seattle. Thank you for watching our channel!!!
Cheers!!!🍻
That is impressive!
Thanks Dawn!! 😀
It is almost worth leaving things behind and downsizing while on the road!! Thank you for watching!!
Cheers!!🍻
Can i ask where you where you got your two bags from?
Those are the Away larger carry-on luggage. 😀
It's the Beis mini weekender 😊
We Love your videos. Hey Brian do you think having a collared shirt would be useful? Also I can not find the links to buy the Away bags for your commission? Oh Carrie how do you dry your hair, do you get AirBnBs with Hair dryers?
Thank you!! I haven't needed a collared shirt for anything. If I ever find that I do I will buy one while traveling. we find that most Airbnb has hair dryers, only one time have we come across one without one. All our links are in the video description, here is the one that you are looking for. Thank you!!!

Yes, we are in the amazon affiliate program!! Thank you for the comment and for supporting our channel!!!

@@BrianandCarrie Good to hear, just bought a waterproof phone case though it!
Very nice!!!!! Thank you so much for the support!!!!

I too will NEVER lug a large suitcase around!!! EVER!!! Good job! Monos Carry-on Plus is another good one. I'm off to buy some slippers! :)
Slippers are very important!! 😆 Thank you for watching and safe travels!!

How much are you carrying in terms of weight? Some European airlines have reduced limits like:
- Handbag / Carryon
Weight: 8kg (17 lb 10 oz)
Size: Length × Width × Height => 40 × 23 × 55 cm (or 15.748 x 9.055 in x 21.65 in)
- Small Item
Weight: 4kg (8 lb 13 oz)
- Check-in
Weight: 23 kg ( or 50 lb 11oz)
Size (length + width + height) = 158 cm (max) (or 62 in)
We haven't had our bags checked at all since we have been here. No problems at all.
Cheers!!🍻
Newer subscribers here... with a silly question.... but Carrie the tank you are wearing in this video do you know the brand? Wondering if it's a nicer brand that travels well or just a regular run of the mill.... lol!
Great info you all put out. Cheers to enjoying life!
Great question! I always love finding easy-to-travel items, the key being they wash and hang to dry well. These are the ones I have here: amzn.to/3uJhrx6
Cheers!!
I carry them on. I have been using cheap disposable razors and haven't had any problems! Thanks for watching Andy!

@@BrianandCarrie yes Vietnam is great, spent 4 weeks while doing a 6 month trip through Asia just before COVID hit & loved it. Heading back for another month & staying at An Bang Beach in Hoi An. @@BrianandCarrie PS not sure if you have done Laos but it’s worth a visit
We just returned to Da Nang after spending two days in Hoi An! Such a fun place. We will not be getting to Laos or Cambodia this year but planning on coming back in January 2024 for another tour of the region. Thank you for watching!!

@@BrianandCarrie thanks guys for the response. Cambodia is another amazing place & Dec/Jan is a great time for weather. Keep living your best lives 💙
Cheers!!🍻
Than you@@BrianandCarrie!! Really appreciate your videos with valuable information!
Thanks guys!! We really do appreciate that!!!
Cheers!!🍻
Do you ever use vacuum bags? Probably the ones that don’t require a vacuum.
Ha! My party pants are packed away back home! 😅
Cheers 🍻
Can you do a video on winter packing for cold climates?
Hi, Randell. We don't travel to cold climates. We leave all of our winter clothes in a suitcase back home in a family member's closet. Maybe someday when we feel adventurous we may plan a trip somewhere snowy and cold. For now, we enjoy the warm weather. 😀
Cheers!!🍻
Cheers!!🍻
This video just in time for me. I only like to ask you Brain is your suitcase hand luggage size ? Or just above .?
Both suitcases are the away larger carry-on. Thank you for watching!!
