Wrong. Tag gave free watches to women and made men pay a high price for theirs. Tag lost a lot of customers with that stupid move. They're never buying a watch from them ever or again.
I like your point about watch collecting being a journey. The journey is what makes it fun and worthwhile. It’s not about how many watches you have or how much you spent on them.
Gotta say Teddy, I have followed your videos since the beginning with not so many subscribers. It is amazing to see you and your channel have grown, along with the quality and information of your videos. Wonderful.
I completely agree that you should collect watches for yourself and not for others; it may coincidently be a watch which is popular and sought after and that is still alright since that is what you want; don’t buy for investment purposes but for yourself! Thanks Teddy for reaffirming my belief!
I’d love to see you do more interviews with individual collectors. You have done a great job of appealing to the “everyday watch enthusiast” so I believe there would be great value in exploring normal collections. I’d even volunteer!
17:18 Yo, where did you get footage of that movement? That is my favorite movement in the world, but as far as I know it is not produced anymore in the smaller version.
Teddy your video on breguet has been by far my favorite. I've been reading the daniels breguet book and have been fantasizing about these watches! The history and uniqueness of the designs are awesome. Keep up the great content!
Great video, Teddy! I know nothing about watches. I just think they are neat. I love watching your videos. You are so knowledgeable and manage to refrain from sounding arrogant. Well done. Hoping to get myself a Seiko after achieving my next career milestone. Thank you for the free education!
Congrats on your wedding Teddy. I’m getting married in April of next year. Cant wait to buy the Khaki Aviation Pilot Pioneer 38mm from you guys to go with my merlot suit. Keep up the amazing work guys
I enjoy the story about choosing a watch for your wedding. We established a tradition in our family, we brought my over grandfather's pocket watch which is over 100 years old, my grandfather's scarf and my great-grandfather is Bible that he brought from Europe.
Thank You for this Teddy. I like how you answered the questions, with character and intelligence I can relate to your interest in your collecting more and more.
Actually, my watch collection consists mostly of watches that were gifts to me as commemoration of a specific life event. My first watch was from my grandfather when I achieved straight A's on my report card. I manual wind Seiko. I still have it today, though it runs about 5 minutes fast everyday. My latest watch of note is a Tissot pre-1990 Seastar that my wife's grandfather gave me as a wedding gift when I married 34 years ago. I still wear it today as my wedding band no longer fits. My dad recently handed down my great grand-father's railroad pocket watch to me. My dad had it serviced before giving it to me and it is deadly accurate. My next watch, which I am taking a l-o-n-g time looking for is my retirement watch. Thanks for your videos, Teddy. It is a great education on watch collecting, as I have never thought of my watch collection as a collection, or hobby. I'm just sentimental and hate ridding myself of things of importance to me.
Same with me. While I don’t own many watches (6 at the moment), almost all came to me as gifts or inheritances - my grandfather’s 1915 Waltham RR pocket watch, my uncle’s 1987 Rolex Datejust, 1955 IWC SS, 1966 Omega 18k Seamaster, and my dad’s 1940’s Bulova tank. I love them all, and think of the people who owned them originally whenever I put one on.
For the record, love the factory/site visits - they're a bit denser, but always find it worth it when I make the time to watch it. MBF, Longines and JLC were some faves - keep it up :)
Cartier Manufacture visit please! I know they are not the most amazing for their movements, that would go to Jaeger-LeCoultre and you have already graced us with a JLC manufacture visit. But Cartier makes the most amazing shapes for watches and somehow makes it work with such finesse it would be such a treat to witness their work.
The Swatch group can do this with their brands like WWE does it with wrestlers. You have someone be the bad guy for a while, then they are assigned the role of good guy and get a special following. In watches this is done with the lowest relative quality, lume, AR, movements, then you elevate them, sprinkle in some nod to their heritage and it becomes something special.... for a while.
I’m glad you pointed out the fact that you have to like the look of a watch first. There are some watches out there by big name brands that I’ve been tempted to buy, but I didn’t actually like what they look like. Just liked the name cache. Sometimes I have to sit back and say “would I like the look of this if it was an Invicta?” or some other random low tier brand.
I liked it too. Looks is always on 1. place. I mean that's the whole point of collecting. If someone buy watch only because of hype or investment is just pose, nothing more.
Greetings from Romania! You are an amazing and down to Earth person and watch collector! You made me understand I was always an enthusiast. I think buying a BB54 and B&M baumatic Riviera 10617 makes me one. All the best!
People rarely notice what watch I am wearing unless they are another watch person. That rare occasion happened a couple of months ago in a local shop by a random person who said of my Tudor Black Bay 58, “nice Tudor” when walking by. I concur that Tudor could join that small tier of universally known watches among the general public
I don't own a Longines but I do find them among the most handsome watches made. They might be a grail watch for me. I have a Hamilton and a PRX, unfortunately I really don't need another watch
No one NEEDS another watch. If it's something you're passionate about, you treat yourself over the years. I own a Longines and love it. My dad liked mine so much, he bought one too.
I sold my Hamilton to supplement the purchase of the Longines Legend Diver. It’s my 3rd favorite behind my grand Seiko and Breitling. I feel like Longines is the brand to move to the next level.
Before I took the deep dive into watch collecting (which was not that long ago)… “Seiko” and “Timex” were interchangeable in my mind. But after learning more about Seiko and its innovation, history, and quality, I’ve become a huge fan of it and especially Grand Seiko. I recently bought a Seiko SPS001, mostly for its historical significance, but also because I LOVE its look. Taking your advice now on which Grand Seiko to add to the collection… researching and waiting until I figure out exactly which one is the right one for me. Greatly appreciate you sharing your love of this hobby, and the great advice you have for those of us newer to this. 🍻
Speaking of heritage of watches, do you have any starter books or resources that you like that dives into the history of watch making. I'm a mechanical engineer just starting to delve into the watch world, and would love to read up on the development of movements and how we got where we are today.
For me: features, style, build quality, and price. If it is the style I want, and has the right features (size, date, material, movement, etc.), is of good quality, and I can afford it, then I will purchase. Brand is as important as these things.
Excelent video as always Teddy. I was hoping to see my question in here 😅. Here it was: If I were to purchase a statement (in your face) piece 5k or so, what would you (and you guys) recommend? I'm thinking omega ploprof, panerai, seiko tuna, etc... Thanks for the answers!
Thanks Teddy. I wanted to throw out Zodiac as well as a brand that I think will become more noticeable… they have the heritage and history that watch enthusiasts respect, couple with the fact that they are releasing limited releases that pull from and improve upon their older models. The incredible colors and classic designs of the Seawolf I think are just great. Plus the 40mm size on most of their watches wear great on every wrist size. Finally at south of 2Gs they are attainable for most collectors. 😊
I think Zodiac has major QC issues for their retail price point. I've purchased 3 Zodiac watches, still own 2 of them, and all 3 have small flaws that should not be present on a watch with a retail price of $1300+. I'm talking applied indices not aligning with the lume markers (noticeable with the naked eye from a typical viewing distance), diving bezels being misaligned by half a degree or more, and the STP 1-11 movements being a piece of ass to interact with. I love their designs and history but they need to really step it up if they want to be taken seriously outside of super niche Zodiac fans.
@@SuLu_XD that’s terrible. Not the experience I have had with Zodiac. I have the Crystal Toppers Edition Seawolf GMT. Too me, it’s a nearly flawless watch, especially at the price point. I paid about 1300 for it. No misalignment issues, no issues with loom. Can dress it up or dress it down. It’s not a “true” GMT but still does the trick. But I hear you, need to have more consistency across the board if you are having issues with yours.
The Tudor Submariner. Wish you still had that one. I’ve got about 12 watches. I’m not selling any of them. Thought about it but so glad I never did. I cycle through all of them, regardless of price I love them all. A lot of them have become seasonal for me, I’ll wear it for a month and then switch. I used to think 12 was too many but I don’t think that anymore and I’m way less concerned about “the next watch.”
I recently bought a Longines Master Collection moonphase triple date chrono. I love it. Where else can one get a column wheel chrono for the money? As for Tag, they have a tourbillon. Respect.
I saw the blue Hydroconquest GMT for the first time the other day and it was impressive. The Zulutime still has the edge I think though. The new Conquest looks quite nice too, but I really think a manual wind Master Series with deployant and curved end (not close fitted) strap is needed from them now.
Hope you will get to do a Manufacture Tour at Grand Seiko soon. I'm a huge GS fan and would love to get an inside view of their facilities. I imagine they stand up well, if not better, to many of their Swiss competitors.

Swatch has a strategy that has stratified brands into price bands. It’s a reasonable strategy, each brand in the group has to optimise for their position and price range.
I wonder if that has a lot to do with them trying to push the Mini Dolce Vita with J Law more so than the other killer enthusiast releases like the Zulu Time 39 or HydroCon GMT
@@josiah566You're assuming that Longines only caters to watch enthusiasts like you. Longines markets to the general public too. Thank you for still talking about entry level watches even after so much success. The majority of watch buyers appreciate you
Tissot Seastar 1000 (36mm) is the best watch.
