Thank you for everyone’s contributions, there’s some great insights in the comments here. A common theme that’s come up has been on the meaningful vs surface-deep conversations that are typical to reality TV and what that infers about the cast. Remember that they’re there to be entertainers, not educators, the two aren’t mutually exclusive but it’s incredibly tough to do both effectively.
It’s a fair point to say I’m probably not a typical cast member for the show, as well you may not be either, had you been put on the island, so here’s something to ponder...
I think the deeper a person is, the more likely their views are to be too subtle, contrary or alarming to society at large. The whole point of the show is to have archetypal roles being played out by the contestants. “The hero” “the maiden” “the villain” etc. When you have someone with a high degree of depth, they are, by design, less likely to slot into one of those categories, which makes them a bad TV character given the goal and required expediency of the show.

I think what sticks out to me about love island, is that to be successful on it you need a real sense of self. Which is probably why it's the typical spoilt kids, people who brought themselves up(single parent families) that do the best. The one thing I think Love Island shows is how wrongly people explain confidence to children. I can imagine that's probably what held you back when you went in. I mean, not that you looked worried or bothered, but I bet you kick yourself sometimes thinking how was I letting someone like Jon Clark lead a group of boys, that I was in lol
This is the reason I don't bother with reality TV shows. The people on them are genuine enough, but the fakery comes with what happens behind the scenes with the producers, trying to generate drama to turn it into some kind of subtle Jerry Springer type show, made for the masses who enjoy watching crap like that. I would happily watch a show like that if it was filled with intelligent people having intelligent conversations, although I can understand why that would bore most people.
Truth be told, from having watched some of your recent videos, I think you have found your calling. Your conversation with Jordan Peterson was awesome, and although he always has a lot of great wisdom, you did a great job of asking questions and making intelligent points. I subscribed after watching that.

The fact that jess got naomis original place really explains why naomi was soo obsessed with jess' men , clearly she felt entitled to them coz jess had her place

What happend why did she kill herself?
What he revealed about Jessica Hayes and Naomi; about Jess being plucked from the mock cast and replacing Naomi initially; that's incredible. Have to wonder if Naomi mugging off Jess was retaliation for her taking her spot at the start.
Mentioning Sophie Gradon towards the end and her battles following the show. Tragic foreshadowing there. Perhaps the production team should consider giving the cast more freedom in the house moving forward.

After watching this, I can finally pinpoint what bothered me about the show.
You never REALLY get to know them. You know their personality, but they never dive deep or anything
Very perceptive. You’re right. However I think this is a systemic problem of cable TV generally. Advertisement breaks and limited broadcast time means you never get to hear a long form discussion, everything is chopped down to instagrammable, youtubeable, clickbait meme-fodder because that is what the platform requires. In my opinion ITV2 does about as good of a job as is possible to portray the cast virtuously and with depth, given the communication medium. But it’s like asking for your thirst to be quenched by drinking out of a shot glass; wholly unsatisfying if you want more.

That little rant about Zoë was too perfect 😂😂 you seemed like a top guy on the show and was sad to see you go. Watching this has only enhanced my opinion of you! You and your mates seem to have a great time on these podcasts, so keep doing what you're doing!

Such an interesting perspective and i think in light of what happened to Sophie Gradon and her battle with mental health a lot of what you had to say is so refreshing to hear ..it's eerie how you pointed all of this out and then just today it was announced that she chose to end her life ..i dont think many people ever truly understand what their getting themselves in for and its truly sad

I'm glad I made it to the end of the video and heard that bit on Zoe. Your reactions to her rudeness were always so chill and nice so I'm happy to hear you say what everyone was thinking. Idk if it was the editing but it seems like she despised you for no reason. You were well-liked by everyone BUT her. It just seemed fishy and I never understood it. I get not liking someone but she went out of her way to be over the top about it. I hated that.

This was really interesting to listen to after just finishing season 1. You show a lot of respect for the people on the show while being honest about how you feel. It makes the perspective you share really nice. You seem like a real good person 👍🏼
Aiza that’s a lovely sentiment, thank you for that. 100% agreed on respect. Despite what some of the British press may have said about this podcast - I have a lot of love & respect for the guys at ITV, as well as the contestants, everyone watching should appreciate how much the production team look after the cast members under their care, very few broadcasting companies would be that bothered!

I feel like the “lock down “ is really toxic and can be a form of abuse , having him explain everything has really opened my eyes to the true love island experience and if I was in there I think I might come out with anxiety and depression..... it’s shocking

I’m surprised more people aren’t leaving the villa and ending up in a mental hospital. That sounds a bit dramatic haha I know, but I genuinely do not understand how the people in the villa can stand to be around one another in this villa for that amount of time. I know that if I was I’d be fucking clawing my eyes out haha. After two weeks in the sun with my family I want to not see their face for a while.. never mind 6-8 weeks!!!
This is literally always my thought.. there's not much to do there and it's so enclosed.. I would lose my mind!

But I feel so sorry for the likes of camilla from last year and the doctor this year.. because they both have so much to offer, are so smart and have loads to talk about.. but can’t. I am pleasantly surprised by how engaging and pleasant to watch this guy is, I know that sounds terribly prejudiced to be surprised, , but I admit that I do make assumptions about the kind of characters who put themselves forward for that kind of 24/7 close scrutiny . I imagined that they must be vain low IQ self obsessed types with no thought given at all to the invasiveness of what's ahead for them.
He is obviously intelligent and informed about the filming aspects we , the public, are interested in. I enjoyed listening to him. He has an impressive vocabulary for a young man of his generation.
Thanks for the kind words Fiona. Love Island discriminates towards people who get viewers and I don’t think anyone can blame them for that. Has there been anyone else you’ve seen from the show which has made you think twice about those assumptions? (I’m happy to be the only one but I’m interested)
@@ChrisWillx Hi there, In answer to your question I honestly haven't seen anybody else who comes across as switched on and clued up to all aspects of the show as you do. Even though they have tried with apparently educated people like Doctors, Pharmacists and Scientists etc , they still speak & act like half wits!
I am a latecomer to Love Island and haven't watched before this season on a regular basis, but I have now gone back & watched a lot of the old series and nope , you are still a very refreshing surprise! 😘
p.s. This series Ovie is probably one other who has it sussed , who is too mature and clued up also for this shows shenanigans , but who will enjoy his time there and be grateful for the exposure .
I was on a show for Channel 4 and the procedures were more or less the same as this. It's crazy how formulated and strict it can be! Quite scary actually

That was so insightful! It's reassuring to hear about behind the scenes. I was skeptical of the show as the drama feels a bit planned, with the timing and cameras already being positioned. It's also strange you never see them cooking or eating.
Eating sounds disgusting on the mics and food for lunch & dinner is provided by an on site canteen for the production team. Served in big dishes and left in a pantry for us to collect!

I love to hear Chris's perspective on Love Island now that his views have greatly evolved over the last 4 years. Hypergamy, status, should bring in a new perspective!
Just watched the whole video now of Chris talking about love island season one , and even though he felt like and problably did not act much like himself, he does not come across as that different now, apart from him being much more open now. Somehow he already seemed more intelligent than the others there, possibly not for the things he was doing, but rather for the things he was NOT doing (saying dumb things, acting shallow or hypocritical etc.... like most others were).
He's just way more interesting to listen to than the others too now I finally can hear him talk more. I can totally reconise how he was more interested in the big picture process behind a show like Love Island rather than the zoomed-in exprience itself, because he's just so much more seems like an abstract thinker than a concrete thinker like most of the others. Abstract thinkers wonder 'why ' things are the way they are, while concrete thinkers just take things as face value.
It would be interesting to know his MBTI. I'd say INTP or INTJ (introverted abstract thinking)

Interesting podcast, thanks. One thing that might have changed from your year is the voting system. Were you or others influenced as to who to pick when it came to voting off, and did you all know beforehand? This year for example, Eyal picking Hayley made no sense unless he (and the others) was advised he had to pick her. Similarly last year Kem and Amber didn't chose one another and that (conveniently) resulted in him staying. Also the order is "cleverly" set so the cliff hanger is last. How much of that is rehearsed beforehand?

At 21:16 when he says "That's not be being facetious in any way", he's only right because he's misunderstood the meaning of facetious. It essentially means making light of something when you shouldn't... he wasn't, so he's right. I'm not being facetious when I say this for the same reason :).

Hi Chris! A couple of speculative curiosity-driven questions and observations. My productivity has disappeared since I've fallen into the bottomless pit of binge-watching season 1 of Love Island last week (I've only gotten to the point where you've been kicked out so pls no more spoilers) and I'm guessing you hear this quite often but you seemed like the smartest and the most normal guy there (normie in a good way). And I was wondering, as you hinted in the podcast, that there was a pressure on you to be more like the rest, and in a sense dumb yourself down and be as much of a lad as you can be, when it seems like in reality you're more of a witty introvert. And thinking about that now, with the knowledge of what you've said here regarding purely villa-related talk being heavily encouraged, it makes me wonder how people in that setting managed to make conversations that would allow them to actually connect. And yet nonetheless it seems some of you guys really did connect and become good friends. At the same time, I could also see how a lot of people in there potentially wouldn't be up for abstract intellectual topics rather than gossip. But anyhow, I wonder what your thoughts are on this. And I wonder what you expected to get out of the experience, knowing yourself and knowing what sort of people would be there -- although perhaps I'm attributing you more knowledge and deliberation than you actually had at the time, so please do correct me here if I'm wrong. And also, if you'd be so kind to save me the google-ing, I'm curious as to what you did at Uni and why you chose to follow the career you did instead (under the assumption that your degree wasn't related to what you do now)?

What on earth did you do all day, talk about? I know you mention that a bit in the podcast, but I can't get my head around the idea of all of you just sitting in the garden all day, confined to talking only about what goes on in the villa. Does that mean you couldn't build any real connections with people, because you didn't even know if you shared the same interests? You really were never allowed to be alone? Did that mean that you sort of found one person you had a bond with, and stuck with them, even if you weren't actively talking to each other and were just sitting in a comfortable silence (or was even that not allowed). Also, what do you think might have happened to Niall? Was it something medical maybe, or a family emergency
Hi George, you could talk about your interests, but there’s a line with talking about common friends/connections/experiences that can’t be broadcast. Regarding the silences, you obviously can’t be forced to talk, but if you wanted some time alone it was pretty difficult to find!!
Regarding Niall - I’m not sure. Hopefully nothing too serious.

I want to know why Zoe was very happy you chose her and kissed you on the cheek, then on the date the next day (or so) she treated you like shit. Like she was viciously rude and you were pretty classy the whole way through. There must have been something the show didn't air that happened in between. Like you gave her chlamydia in her eye again or something.
