Hurst Hemi Under Glass is the name given to a series of exhibition drag racing cars campaigned by Hurst Performance between 1965 and 1975.Each wheelstander was based on the current Plymouth Barracuda for the corresponding model year. The car was so named because the fuel injected Chrysler Hemi engine was placed under the Barracuda's exceptionally large rear window. The result of the rearward weight transfer was a "wheelie" down the length of the drag strip. The Hemi Under Glass was developed by Hurst Corporation to showcase their products in the A/FX class - precursor to funny cars. In 1965, George Hurst hired Wild Bill Shrewsberry of Mansfield, OH, an accomplished drag racer who had raced for both Mickey Thompson and Jack Crissman. After helping to pioneer it into the first wheelstanding exhibition car, Shrewsberry left at the end of the season to pursue his own project. For the 1966 season, Bob Riggle, who was also from Mansfield, OH and was involved with Hurst as a mechanic and fabricator became the second driver of the Hurst Hemi Under Glass car and campaigned the cars with Hurst as the sponsor until later years when the Hurst Company was sold to Sunbeam. At that point, the car ran without the Hurst logo and was simply known as the "Hemi Under Glass." Riggle's career ended in 1975 with a devastating accident at US 30 Dragway in Gary, Indiana.Popular model kits of the car were produced in 1/32 scale by Aurora Plastics Corporation and in 1/25 scale by Model Products Corporation. A limited edition 1/18 scale diecast model of the 1966 car is currently available from Highway 61.[1]Riggle returned to exhibition racing in 1992 with a 1966 injected version of the car and a 1968 supercharged version of the car.[2] The original 1965 car was stripped for its power train and parts in 1967 for the new Barracuda chassis/body style and no longer exists.[3][4]While taping the June 26, 2016 episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Riggle, with Leno riding in the passenger seat, rolled a newly constructed '69 version of the Hemi Under Glass after turning sharply at the end of a wheelie run. Neither of the men were hurt, but the car sustained significant damage.[5] Leno was riding along to fulfill another item on his 'Bucket List.'July, 2016, Mike Mantel of New Braunfels, TX was named as the new driver of the Hemi Under Glass. Mantel took over the '68 car which has the longest performing history of any Hemi Under Glass ever constructed and becomes the third official driver in the brand's 50+ year history.[6] Mantel was only 6 years old when the Hemi Under Glass first took to the track. He has a wide range of driving experience from drag cars, road race, and movie cars. Mantel's original hometown is the city of Hawthorne, CA. - Авто та транспорт
Never seen this one built either - love the 2 tone paint job! Thanks again for cutting through the snobbery that can sometimes exist in this hobby and stifle our creativity. You proactive approach makes modelling really accessible for new builders, Thank you once again Chris!
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

Heck yeah, excellent enthusiasm and shows what fun can be had. HPI, Cranky, and RnR are true Ambassadors to the Hobby!
I'm sure all of us out here in YuoTube land would love to see a shot of your collection as a whole!
Yes.yes we would
I love it I'm turning mine into a slot car feel free to check it out
@@rustyracing6798 what a great idea to make a slot car out of a model Kit!! Very cool! 👍
I'm guessing perhaps you have your own slot car track or maybe a drag strip near by?
@@avidlisner8748 ty glad to hear that
@@rustyracing6798 can you promote your local racetrack? I mean, do you have a name for your race track that you built? I was writing this to hopefully inspire others to also build slot cars out of model cars, but not to take away from this video.
I love the smell of styrene in the morning! Great build!
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

Chris - I just came back from the store where I had this kit in my hand and then put it back - "I'll wait til Chris builds it and use the link." I came home to THIS video. What a fine build. And there is sooo much room in this kit for added detail, mods or changes. Plus, build it basic, display it, then come back later for more detail. Nice set up, Chris.
Thank you for sharing and Happy Thanksgiving...
Better grab before there gone even a real Barracuda are hard to find but Hurst Cuda Gasser model kit is must for scale model eyhuasist.
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

1st off happy thanksgiving to everyone. 2nd great build like how you used the tamia on the block and dirtied it up a bit.
"Very respectable build" Thanks Chris. Happy holidays to all.
Great job. I bought this model some time ago and just started making it. The instructions are for crap so I watched this video to help me and it worked. Thanks
Good background music makes watching the build so much more enjoyable
Great build as usual.
The '64-66 is my favorite out of all of the Barracuda body styles.
Dunno if it'll ever happen (as it'd probably require retooling) but I'd love to see Round2 rerelease "The Boss" AMT '66 Barracuda 2 in 1 that pre-dates this kit. As it could be built as a drag car but also as a stock Barracuda. That kit seems to be pretty rare now... and the AMT dealer promos of the stock Barracuda cost an arm and a leg.
Somehow I had missed this one. Great job! I love your shorter videos. Thanks!
Another Classic to add to the collection. Thanks for a great build. Gotta love those rattle cans.
Thanks for watching!
This is cool, but I wish there was a stock Barracuda kit, too. My brother used to have a 67 Barracuda when I was a kid. I loved laying in the back as a kid just watching the sky while we were going somewhere. Lol!!
Nice job there on a great old kit...I didn't have the original, I built the AMT version from 1973 and painted it plum purple...I thought it was such a cool model.
I love your approach to car modeling...just get the big can of Rustolium and go for it! (1 can = 2-3 models unlike the small Testors spray can) , no fancy airbrush, it's how I painted kits as a kid.
Thanks for watching!
Too Cool. I saw it in real life back in he day, quite spectacular and still is. Watch the video of Jay Leno when he went for a ride in the HEMI Under Glass as a passenger and something went wrong and they rolled it on the track. Bet Leno never expected an "E" Ticket ride like that and I think that was the first time it ever crashed. Another beautiful build Chris and you did it out of the box which is the proper way for this super ride. I picked several quarts and a couple of pints of Rustoleum and some additives and hardener for spraying in my airbrush. Hope it works good!
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

I was crazy for drag racing as a teen
and this was my favorite car. I know
you will bring it to life.
I have never seen a rear engined funny car, then I remembered the details you like to give in the description. Makes sense,a wheel stander, rear engine! Cool man!
I grew up down the road from a guy with one of those magic garages. Old one door two car garage, when you went in over on the other side was a 'Cuda, one of the Hurst rent-a-dragsters! Was black and white, where yours is gold. Was called the "Super Skonk" had a cool looking skunk mascot on the doors like under the mirrors. It had a 426!!! Hemi! Was the most amazing car I'd ever seen. We (neighborhood kids) would help him push it out,and he'd wash it and then fire it up for us! Just AWESOME!! Helped him pack the chute one time,so he could show us how it worked. It was spring loaded and when he pulled the handle it shot out like 5 feet! As a kid, that was one of the coolest things.
All this stuff was original from the dealer.

Wow Chris ! I love this one ! I haven't built but one dragster in my collection but want definitely want to build more after seeing this video. I built a Sox and Martin 67 Plymouth GTX. You can basically use the same methods you used in painting your Hemi Underglass. My 67 Plymouth Sox and Martin did have decals for the hood, top, and trunk areas plus Sox and Martin decals for each of the doors and sponsorship decals as well. Sadly I lost my Sox and Martin model in a house fire and I'm having a difficult time finding another one. But definitely want to build this Hemi Underglass Barracuda ! Great build, love it, keep up the good work !

Just purchased this kit as a fun project. Was looking for some pointers and a direction. You nailed it! Thanks for the video! This saved me from searching and studying 1:1 versions for the proper colors. I
build Mopars exclusively! Will be a great addition to my factory stockers! 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! What an excellent build Chris. I never seen a Hemi under glass kits before( in fact never heard of it). The paint job was outstanding. Lots of details too. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all of your viewer's. Have a great weekend all.

Thanks for these videos. I run an auto club at the high school and since we can't get together, we had a model car show. Kids and I had fun and it's great seeing the cars they are into. I think building model cars might become a normal part of our club. Your videos gave me the confidence and direction to enjoy my own model build too. Many thanks.
That is awesome! Keep doing it and make sure they know perfection is impossible and to just have fun!
Thanks for making models available to the kids!
Chris this is a Excellent kit. I built it circa 73/74 from the "Street Freaks" Mad Mackerel Relrase. Which had Rubber Tires (that's the one Disappointment in this reissue)) But not enough to deter buying it. I plan on buying 6 or so to kit bash into Semi stock 66 barracudas
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

Awesome job 👍 I just got this one haven't started it yet glad you did a video the instructions don't even show the engine going in
Thanks William!
Excellent job. The first car I built was the hemi hustler 66 barracuda which seems to be the exact kit with different wheels and decals.
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

This model looks awsome if your lucky enough to complete it right I fought with it alot, that front axle nightmare the chassis was twisted so tires weren't even had to rig it up with a piece of plastic they say it's easy build no way, I wish lol
Another great video Chris. I really enjoy the way you build models. Simple and direct. That's something a lot of us have forgotten. Your building has brought back a lot of childhood memories of building just for the enjoyment of building. Again thank you for what you do for our great hobby. Take care, Don.

There’s good video here on the UA-cam’s of the real life version of this car being rolled and totaled with Jay Leno riding shotgun
They rebuilt it.
I thought Jay was driving
The car he rolled was the later version, 68-69, and no, Jay wasn't driving, Bob was. And he was totally embarrassed. But the first thing he did when they came to a stop was make sure Jay was OK.
Outstanding work! This was one of my favorite drag racers. Thanks for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Damn. Another model that I need to add to the stash. The list keeps getting bigger, usually when I watch one of your videos.
Saw later versions of this car IRL in the late 60's and early 70's... LOVED the wheelstanders- all those sparks!! Wish there was a model of the Hell on Wheels tank.... Great build BTW- love how you build models, nice and clean, don't worry about super details, and have FUN :)
Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch the channel!
You did a spectacular job on this one!( You done "Mopar" proud !!
Nice build i have never built this kit either Chris that warm gold is a sharp color i did a 37 ford that color

@@hpiguy Yes sir same to you
Another great video,it makes me want to rush out and by a kit. I made heaps of AMT kits in the sixties always with good results even with my limited ability. The Rustoleum paint you use is available in Oz but is very expensive so I will keep on using an airbrush as I have stacks of paint at home. The gizmo with the clips you use to hold small parts looked familiar to me then I realized I had one in my cupboard with a magnifying glass on it, so it's bye bye magnifier and get ready to be covered in paint. Once again an inspiring video.
Yeah we gotta use what's available to us and airbrushes are a great tool, I have a few and use as needed.
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

Beautiful job ! ❤️👍😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for this review! I have been waiting for it, I am building a model of Richard Petty's 43 jr OUTLAWED using a 1965 Barracuda resin body from a kit made to build the Hemi Under Glass! I need this kit for the wind shield & back glass, but am donating a lot of parts from a 1969 Barracuda. That 1969 will then be built as a Hemi Under Glass using the parts from this kit! Your reviews are always so informative I play them while building!
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

I just started to build this kit I decided to watch the video. Glad I did as I was ripped off with the decals. I only got Hemi Under Glass and not the rest and Round 2 will not send replacements to Australia.
You have this edition of the kit? Or you have an old version?
@@hpiguy No I have the 2006 issue. Can I purchase after market ones from somewhere? It will look weird without the other decals.
Omg. Just seen the real one in Chicago this last Saturday and now this video wow !!! Thanks Chris

If you do build another one, you should model it the way it looked after Bob rolled it on Jay Lenos Garage. He said it was only his 2nd crash in 50 years driving the Hemi Under Glass.
LOL

Chris, great build. That box art is begging to be matted and boarded for a frame! The back glass on that model is super sweet. No real distortion, I picture a bubble back late 80s Monte Carlo. The bottom finishes the car off great!

Very nice, love the engine under glass.♥🇺🇸
Me too!
Another great review with much appreciated building tips. I have this kit in my to-do stack but want to do the injected version that I remember from my youth way back when! As was pointed out; there are a number of variations that can be built and that adds to this kit’s “fun factor”! A great kit for club builds- I have a feeling that companies such as slixx will have other version decals available soon!

Nice job! The kit is actually the old AMT Street Freak Cuda with Hurst decals and (now) rims. But, the kit bears little resemblence to the real HUG aside from the 66 body. Hopefully R2 will reissue the MPC 1969 HUG which was pretty nice.
Thanks for the nice words!

I was about to pull the trigger on this at the hobby shop the other day, but I just knew a review would be coming lol. I walked out with a Moebius 72 Ford instead, but I'll have to go back and grab one of these now. The plastic tires are kinda bleh, especially being used to Round 2's awesome pad prints, but who wouldn't want a H.U.G?
The tires turn out nice with a flat black. And the wheels push right in. You'll be surprised how nice they end up looking.
