Fun fact! Those gloves Vanitas wears aren't just aesthetically edgy. The "finger nails" are actually small knives so he was actively trying to rip Rolland's face off and easily could have done it if Rolland wasn't Rolland.
they were used as a form of self-defence for women. but was later made illegal. so women started resorting to hat pins. you know, a 2ft long needle perfect for stabbing.

@@yourfreindlyneigborhoodweeb In the manga there are extras where they breakdown Noe and vanitas' outfits (probably to help cosplayers) and they show his gloves. I looked them up out of curiosity and discovered their existence and a bit about the laws. I didn't go too deep in the rabbit hole and I've forgotten most of what I learned. I can't even remember in what country or time period they existed and were made illegal. But if you look for them online you can find pictures of them from museums.

Ugh, I’ve always loved the scene of Vanitas falling asleep on Noé’s back as a sign that he trusts him. Also the “if we’re together” scene earlier that episode 😭

I LOVE how you interpreted Vanitas's character, like you worded that in such a good way that makes me as someone who likes to analyse anime characters to the bone feel satisfied. I feel like Vanitas gets mischaracterized way too much, and it makes me feel kinda sad .

Your Vanitas description feels pretty solid, I also feel like he is meant to be somebody who actually doesnt have much confidence and it jsut constantly scraping by, and puts ona front to scare away the threats, as he probably doesnt really trust much after his childhood. Vanitas is basically the lost kid, who never actually found ther home and are still roaming the streets hoping to survive another day.
Vanitas is actually so insecure underneath it all I could rant for hours about this man and how he tries to prove to people that if he cant convince you hes likeable he needs to prove that hes atleast useful. Also he's literally a pretend freak if he was in a room with someone like Dazai he'd be so freaked out he'd have a whole new heap of baggage to board on to his plane of trauma
I'm a Dazai kinnie and my friend's sister is a Vanitas kinnie and that's exactly what happened when we met each other lol

That’s probably one of my favorite aspects of Jun Mochizuki’s writing, her ability to use the reader’s knowledge and understanding of tropes and knowing how to manipulate them in her work is amazing. It’s one of the larger aspects of her writing that’s present in all three of her works, and is a large tell of her storytelling.

It never ceases to amaze me how danny has full blown conversations with himself on a deep level that, i dare say, if he didn't look like the same person, it would appear there are two people talking.

The thing is, Vanitas care, like a lot. And he hates the fact that he cares and can't help it. Because caring about others has brought nothing but pain to him his entire life. So the asshole act is a way to keep others away so that 1. he doesn't hurt them and 2. they can't hurt him.

It's hilarious that you mention the "people drinking from Noe" thing cause there's an omake in the manga where Noe points it out himself and says he wishes he was doing the drinking

In the manga the chasseurs wear regular plain crosses around their neck but the anime changes it to those weird silver, rectangles. Im not sure why the change was made.
There's also a scene in the manga where Vanitas gets angry at Noé for charging in for a fight without thinking, and Noé comes to the conclusion that Vanitas is angry that Noé uses himself to protect Vanitas of his own volition instead of Vanitas using Noé. I think it adds some more context to Vanitas as a character and how he values his life, the conversation may have been moved somewhere else in the show (I don't remember).
After their cover has been blown, Vanitas ties his sash into a bow, and in the manga Noé wonders to himself, if Vanitas feels "restless" without a bow.
Noé can crush the floor because he manipulates the world formula to make himself stronger.

And there was another end credit scene at the end of episode 10 (I know these are recorded way in advance so it really doesn't matter at this point) but basically it's Lord Ruthven and Monsieur Spider discussing how Noé and Vanitas foiled their plans regarding Moreau, and that Ruthven will deal with Noé.

Definitely one of my fav things about this show is how many layers each character has, especially vanitas. And another thing that danny mentions is that this show really is amazing at turning regular tropes or things that you see often in shows into something interesting and different

I love how in the beginning Vanitas seems to be some chuuya or dazai type of character and suddenly the history advance and he becomes a really interesting and unique character

Vanitas's armor of thorns, as Danny described, is a vicious cycle. The armor works to protect him, by leaning into people hating him in order to do a good deed, but in turn, people still dislike him even when he does these things to help them because of the way he goes about doing them.
I really fucking love the weapons in the the show . They are all so quintecentually anime being so comically oversided and impractical , but make sense to used in the universe because the characters have super strength . I love how rolands double bladed sword has ecsessive abilites , like turning into two swords that can turn into bladed chain whips that can also produce electricity . I also like Jeannes giant crimson Gauntlet that not only has razor sharp claws but also shoots crimson flames.

He and Dazai share the essence, but not the structure. Dazai is also kind of a poser, but his issues on that front are less pronounced compared to Vanitas'

I'm SO glad you understood Vanitas' character. He's so much more complex than people think.
The characters in this series can be so complex and intricate. I could write a whole book just talking about Vanitas' character, personality, and trauma, and how that shapes him and his behavior. It can really be interesting to pick apart why he reacts in certain ways to certain things based on each of those aforementioned pieces of him and how those factors interact with each other; and how two sided his truth vs his facade really is. The thorn armor works well as an analogy, I think you're definitely picking up on good chunks of his character for sure. Vanitas means a lot to me as a character, just as this show overall does, and he can be such a hard character to understand- so it's cool to hear your thoughts. So glad it seems like you're enjoying the show!

you should react to TBHK or the amazing digital circus ( or ramshackle) I don’t know if TBHK is something for this channel but it’s still a really good show and the amazing digital Circus only has two episodes and danganronpa but that’s the least important one

I really love Vanitas and Noe relationship. Vanitas is there to ground Noe while our sweet vampire always reach or Vanitas humanity. It's sweet and if he really kills him in the end... It's been a long time since I've read the manga. Almost 10 years and it's not over yet. I love Jun Mochizuki's work.
