Lookin' sharp Ryan! The Z8 is an absolute monster, I love it. Firmware 2.0 takes it to another level, it's a massive update. Best camera I've ever owned by miles. It's currently on sale... just sayin' 😏 Looking forward to more Z8 / vids, love tagging along on live sessions like you showed here.
My Z8 turned up today. I know have the Z9 that I will use specifically for my sports work and the Z8 for my portrait work. The Z9 is a bit heavy for my 60 year old self to hold at an all day shooting session.
Yeah i held off on the z9 because it was just a bit too much camera for me but the z8 will be perfect.. i just cant wait until the z6iii is released so i can have a great video camera for youtube.. i need 10 bit and i have been thinking about just buying a zf to hold me over
It's a great camera, yes. Make a checklist for settings adjustments you want to make from defaults. Go to the web-based reference guide and copy the table of menu items with their default values. It may be some 600 entries long ... If you get one lent to you from Nikon, set it to factory defaults and then apply your own personalisations. Image qualities - pixel size, aspect ratio, colour space, B&W, RAW, JPEG Card slot assignment (e.g. RAW to CFeB and JPEG to SD-UHS-II, but note that you still need to set e.g. RAW + JPEG elsewhere). And if you place only one card, check what happens. "Recognition AI AF" comes in different menu places and you probably want to customise e.g. back-button focus (AF-ON) for 3D tracking. The 3D tracking is phenomenal and makes recomposing very easy. I want my normal eVF setting to give me brightness relative to correct exposure. That means the eVF is dark when I am underexposed. Make sure to set the option that stops this as soon as you place a flash (trigger) on your camera, or your viewfinder will be black. WB - I never use Auto WB. WB to the raw file is just a number in the meta data and another number does not change the actual RAW image data. The WB number tells LrC or C1 how to open the raw file, nothing more. In my country I have it to "Cloudy" all the time and that gives a good starting point for flash as well. In case you shoot JPEG (too) you need to do better than this. Auto WB can be fooled by dominant colours in the subject. Clock - I set my camera to UTC - Universal Time Coordinated (today's Greenwich Mean Time). If you work in different time zones then this is the best way to determine shot order in time, later on. Memory Banks for Settings - the camera supports (4 IIRC) memory banks to store settings, so you could have one for sports, another for portrait in ambient light or portrait in studio. You can rename these, rather than 1,2,3,4 or A,B,C,D. You may want to look into how the camera deals with ISO. I (almost) never shoot Auto ISO. Note that the camera has "fixed ISO" internally with two amplification levels in the sensor (low and high). The switch point is near ISO 400 and so at ISO 400 you are at about the noise level of ISO 100, while, say, ISO 380 is worse. At ISO 1,600 the camera still performs incredibly good, and above. Save your settings to card and you can import them to your other camera. Cards - make sure you have cards that do not slow the camera down. I use Delkin 1TB "Gen 4" cards that are very fast but also can be used many, many times (30,000 P/E - program/erase - cycles). If you shoot high volumes you may want the fastest card reader there is, say at Thunderbolt (TB) 3 or 4 if your computer has that (Sonnet have a dual CFeB slot reader on TB - I use it, it is the fastest out there, but not elegant in its use in Windows because in startup it only mounts when there is a card in the reader).
@@RyanTroy am a portratist, before now I was shooting the 105 1.4e but it's up for sale now, since the arrival of the 85. The 85 and the 200mm f2 are my go to lenses for portraits, interestingly I just acquired the viltrox 75 mm 1.2 and this third wheel of a lens is throwing spanner into the duopoly of the 200 and the 85. I can tell you that after tests, the viltrox is sharper than the 85. I was surprised but it is what it is.
@@RyanTroyman get the 105mm 1.4 from Nikon. I have yet to see it left behind by any portrait lens. That’s why these 85 to 135s don’t excite me. That 85 is worth the money I dont doubt that but for the price you could grab a 200mm f2. That is if you don’t mine the size.
When it comes to the Nikon Z line i would love the Nikon Z5 and the future Nikon Z5 Mark 2. I must admit I still want a great second hand Nikon D750 and a Nikon D780 to go with my two Nikon D5500's and my future Nikon D5600
Hopefully I'm not fired for focusing too much on Michelle the lovely model LOL. That 85 1.2 is dreamy bro! What did you think of that 50 1.2 though? That lens never leaves my camera bro. Great work. I had a great time working with the both of you.
All the footage you got was great I actually just bought the weebill 3s so I can put heavier lenses on it. I really love the 85 1.2 but I’m happy with my 50mm 1.8 both are above my budget but if Nikon wants to giveeeee me them I won’t complain lol
Man that's fire! 🔥 Really nice Ryan! If I may ask you a question cause I seem to struggle in a certain aspect. What is your preferred way to post to instagram? Do you export at 1080x1350? Also any tips on sharpning for instagram? I find your posts are so on point. Trying to up my game. Much appreciated Ryan
@@Ryanphotos1 actually I just watched that and I do it slightly different . I set it to jpeg now and keep the quality to the max and adjust the size until I have a 2mb file. It shows you the file size on the left. I’m sorry for the confusion
So glad you to get your hands on the newer camera. Now you see what it does versus that z7ii (which I loved). But Nikon brought it as far as they could and it ain’t the z9/8/ or zf. Focusing is drive. By the processor and that one in the z7/z7ii is slow.
Listennnnnn someone pointed it out to me at the conference and I was like "oh i forgot to take it off" but when i got the suit i was like oh i guess this is suppose to be there... i was so embarrassed lol.

That boy went to WPPI and racked up on content! Nice!
😎😎😎 i got 3 more videos on the way.. You know we "C.O.E." Gang Gang!
So good. The results are just so good. Color, focus - all of the shots are just so good.

Great video. As a portrait photographer I think you’re going to love this camera. I have my copy and I’m going to use it as my go to camera.
