  • Multimeters are one of those handy tools everyone should have in their toolbox - you can check DC and AC voltages on your projects, test the current your circuits are drawing, and even check resistance values! They're an incredibly easy tool to use too - so long as you are careful which inputs you use!

    Pfft, your PC might have bigger fans in it than that.
    You forgot something very important though. Better multimeters have 4 terminals, but cheaper ones that most people use have only 3. Only the high-current range is split out on those, the low-current ranges are not, it's via the same terminal as the voltage and resistance. What's important about that is that when you have your multimeter connected to something, i.e. you use crocodile or probe cllip, and you decide to change the measurement type, you must remember to turn the knob AWAY from the current range, rather than wiping right through it! Because on 3-terminal multimeters, if you were to wipe across the current range, the range switch will short out the test leads, you are not completely unlikely to damage your multimeter, and whatever you're testing might suffer too.

      Im gonna pin this because its a really good point: definitely be careful to disconnect leads, or at least be careful to avoid the low-impedance modes when switching so you dont blow a fuse! And always be sure to know your tools - read the manual about your device so you know the right and wrong ports to use!

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 років тому +6

      I think i know why people don't read the manuals, they get bored or distracted by the time the manual gets to the bits the person might not think of. They always start with
      * Don't throw into water
      * Don't throw into fire
      * Do not eat
      * No, don't even think about it
      * Not even licking
      * Look, we know you're hungry, but this is important!
      * OK, take a break, eat and come back later and read the rest, promise?
      They never read the rest.

      Beauty and the Bolt I tried measuring current and i connected the negative from power to a fan then used the positive to touch the wires from the power to the fan and it sparked. Is that normal?

      With the connector on the voltage circuit switching to amp measurement is definitely to be avoided .. is also exactly what I wanted to ad which is significant unless it was sponsored by manufacturers of multimeters :-).
      The "my biggest fan" was obviously a joke - if she takes that one and those of her PC (CPU,GPU,PSU, case ...) she already qualifies for having her own fan-club.

    Just needed a quick refresher course on current draw, answered it very simple, I believe this video is not for a beginner but for someone who has a little knowledge of a volt meter. It was pleasant to watch you explain the different functions but some times I had to go back and watch them again because I got distracted watching you.Thanks for making it enjoyable.

      Cheers for the video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you considered - Franaar Shining Shape Formula (do a google search)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for revealing the secret to repair your electronic devices without the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my buddy finally got amazing success with it.

    Great video. My advice is to also add a note at the bottom that has a step by step. Step 1, Step 2. It helps people like me learn a little better.

      Ooooh good luck! BTW if you aren't getting continuity on your headphone cables, sometimes you need to take a lighter to the coating in order to probe them and actually get a connection. Tinsel wire can be kind of a pain sometimes.

    This is a really cool short and crisp intro video !
    I guess another cool feature on recent low cost multimeters is NCV (No Contact Voltage) which comes with its caveats. Also, an explanation in a later video on True RMS meters and its advantages (given more multimeters have True RMS now) would be nice :)

    I'm having a real issue with finding appropriate values and for some reason, there seems to be a real dearth of service manuals for almost everything. I'm guessing that a lot of the products I'm working on had online service manuals that were removed when the manufacturer stopped supporting them. Does anyone know if there is an online single point resource with circuit board multimeter maps? Or service manuals.

    This was somewhat helpful, but I couldn't see what you were setting the multimeter to. That's one of the main reasons for watching a video like this, because every multi-meter is a bit different, and there's multiple settings in the ohms, volts, amps. And anyone who has no idea how a multimeter works, is still gonna be lost. Still have yet to find just one good video that fully explains the what, where, and why of this.
