    If Penny Hardaway didn't get injured, you're talking about a top 15 player of all time. If he stayed healthy and won a few rings, he'd be legit in the discussion of all time great PG's, and top 10 all time players. The man's game was for real. If you're from the generation that saw him play during these years, you won't forget how phenomenal Penny was.

    Man Penny was probably my second favorite player back then in the 90's aside from Mike. Everybody at that time were either rocking a Jordan jersey or a Penny. A lot of kids today think he was "just another scrub" from the 90's just bc they try so hard to discredit MJ's competition. But when he was healthy he was far from that. In his 4 first yrs he was already a 3x all star, 3x all-NBA (2x first team). Also came in 3rd in the MVP race in just his 3rd yr, guys like Kobe and Wade (who are both great) took about 6 yrs to be in the MVP discussion. Dude would've easily been one of the greats, if only real life sports can be like the video games where you can turn off the injuries.

      If that statement was made after 1996 it was a lie. Jordan ultimately knew that Kobe was the dude, but Kobe came along later. All I know is...both Penny and Kobe were better than LeBron’s overrated ass.
      They had better shooting ability, were stronger mentally, were not afraid of the big moments, and played both ends if the floor - even in crunch-time. They were better distributors, too. 😒😏
      LeBron is all power.

    • @DeCurtaRican
      @DeCurtaRican 4 роки тому

      Stephen May : He had that kind of ability, but he would have needed to be in the right organizational situation.
      Let’s keep it real, Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Wilt, Bird, Kobe, Shaq, TD, Hakeem, and Oscar won not because they were more skilled than Penny (or Grant hill or T-Mac). They had greater success because they had surrounding casts and organizations that took care of them.
      If not for Pippen, Harper, Kukoch, and Rodman, , Jordan might never have gotten a ring.
      Its the same with
      Magic: Kareem, Worthy, McAdoo, Wilkes, Cooper, et al.;
      Bird: McHake, DJ, Parrish, Ainge, Walton, Maxwell, et al.;
      Wilt: West, Baylor, Goodrich, et al.;
      Kobe: Shaq, E-Jones, Horry, Fisher, Fox, Odom, et al.;
      So people can laugh, but there are about 12 players who could easily have been top-10 if not for injuries or circumstances.
      KG
      Barkley
      Isiah
      David Robinson
      Penny
      Grant Hill
      T-Mac
      Dominique
      Alex English
      Bernard King
      KD (he won’t be when he retires)
      Dr. J (he’s right on the cusp anyways)

    i had this game on tape. i wouldnt call jordan totally outplaying penny.
    i remember this game so well because it was one of the games that jordan didn't play all that well. he missed a tons of shots and i remember the anxious feeling of magic beating them again in the playoff when i watched this. highlight is deceptive when it comes to the overall performance in an actual game.
    regardless. penny was great. i would never buy into the argument that kobe was more talented as a young player vs penny. my reason is that he showed very promising fundamental skill of bball that kobe didn't have in his early days ( some of those kobe actually never learn in his entire career). i watched all the games the bulls faced the magics in those years and hardaway always gave pippen a hard time on offense. pippen in 95-98 were most definitely in far better shape than he was from 99-02 as defender.
    it is unfortunate that hardaway's career was so short.

      it is true. penny in 94-97 was very mature as a play maker that can also score big if needed with full understanding of the flow of the game. unlike those ball hogs we see today who have to dribbling 20 secs before shooting or dishing it out to teammates. compared to wing players(guard/forward) that were as big or taller than jordan with enough skill and athleticism to compete against him, hardaway might be a bit lacking in jumping ability compared to drexler or wilkins but in terms of ball handling and laterally quickness he was ahead of both. no doubt he was never as strong as even the younger version of jordan but he could definitely be seen as a combo of jordan and magic at the time. i would even say that his combination of skill/iq/athleticism at that time was only matched by jordan/pip/ grant hill until kobe entered the nba( who i think was talented but not sensational like rookie jordan or mature like rookie penny).
      personally i think grant hill has a more all rounded game with a smoother handling. but penny was more clutch and had more flare when it comes to play making both great players that really could have been as accomplished as kobe/lebron or even more so.

    You can easily tell this was a harder fought, hard played game than most in this current regular season era. People say today's game is more skilled. That's absolutely false.. nba players today can display more athleticism because they aren't getting pounded, hand checked, powered up in the post, or beaten up as much driving to the lane/paint as during the pre-2000s era NBA. In today's nba, basically any hard foul is a technical or a flagrant.. back then it would have been just a normal foul.

There is a lot things that happened in between 94-96, and why as talented a team they were always got swept in the playoffs. For one Brian Hill was a terrible coach, coaching was the reason they got swept by Houston in the 95 finals. Against Bulls in the ECF they still had a crappy coach and Horace Grant got injured who would have dealt with Dennis Rodman.

    I’m a huge Jordan and Pippen fan, but Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway-
    6’7 Point Guard
    Dribble, pass, shoot, post up, explosive hops, fundamental game, willing passer to all teammates, very smooth, Air Penny(dope a** shoes) beautiful game!
    Gave Jordan and Pippen hell alot on the court. He and Grant Hill were probably the smoothest ball handlers at that time. Both had crossver dribbles even though GHill’s was nastier, ask Mj and Pip but both could take on those two individually. Bulls when healthy.......well you know the rest! Watch Penny in high school clips, college clips and then pros right here on UA-cam. Ridiculous!!!!!

      @@meg-k-waldren Penny was just as athletic as MJ, keep in mind this was his 3rd year as a pro. If Penny stayed healthy he would have prevented Jordan from getting another 3-peat for sure. The injury Penny suffered (cartilage damage on his left knee) would have crippled anyone including MJ. The sad thing is Penny's injury could have been avoided, he could have recovered from that knee injury, but management in Orlando did not take Penny's knee injury seriously. When MJ got injured in 86, Jerry Krause and Jerry Reinsdorf
      made sure MJ was fully healthy before playing again. Penny did not get that same treatment from Orlando. It was really management that broke up that Orlando squad. The difference between Orlando and Chicago was really management.

    those box stats are in Penny's favor. there were honestly many more matchups that went this way between penny and jordan than not, jordan didn't like it at all lol. and bulls had a good defense and magic's defense sucked horribly outside of shaq and penny. not to mention phil jackson as coach against a horrible magic coach. jordan had an easier time and still got lower stats in the box score, this video just shows way more jordan's plays. that is why i dislike their later matchups though.. and that is what most jordan highlight people have to resort to for their "matchup" highlights now. bottom line.. these two are legendary.. if you seriously look at it, these are probably the top two players as far as years prime of this era. kind of like the durant and lebron of the last era. who is it going to be now in the nba? anthony davis, post injury durant, and giannis? maybe james in that mix too even.
    look. like the first 2 shots by jordan in this highlight aren't even contested, and later on also, hardaway created his own chances against one of the best defensive teams of all time in these 90's bulls. and he would still outperform jordan much more of the time, when these two matched up. shit, if this team would have kept shaq they would have won more than the 3 titles shaq got in LA. and taken one more from the bulls at least! historically significant for the truth of these guys, even with no bench, in orlando. penny and shaq. and shaq was better in orlando than LA also, defensively, athletically, and with more dunks/blocks. and I live an hour outside of LA and am trained to be a Lakers fan and am, but I will contest anyone who saw that era and says otherwise.

      @@bboliver725 By the end of the 96 season, no one in the Orlando roster respected Brian Hill according to Shaq. It's pretty obvious coaching was the problem, in the 1996 playoffs against the Bulls Orlando had most of their players standing around the perimeter and just waiting for Shaq to get doubled-team so they can get a open shot. They tried to make Grant a jump shooter, when he should be near the rim trying to outbox Dennis Rodman. They weren't playing structured basketball. All Orlando needed was a coach to get them over the hump, unfortunately Shaq left and Penny got injured.

      The reality is today game is twice as easy. Nobody can stand in the paint on defense. Nobody can touch you. No hand check. No forearm on the body. Do you thinKs coring is so much higher today for no reason? Lol. Do you not see the countless videos of former players explains home has easier it is today and how MJ would average 50 today? Nobody can stop anybody today from getting to the hoop with no bigs in the paint - so your point is what?
      And if you're suggesting today's players are better, keep trying, lol. You have 3 or 4 true superstars and the rest are over inflated little guards. Jordan would shutdown anybody today at the guard or SF position.
