A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his UA-cam channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Finally, someone who lets you hear the guitar and not the same amp set with high gain and distortion.
Isn't that weird how everyone does that?! a pet peeve of mine
I think once you get passed $1000 for a guitar, you generally get a really great guitar with good parts. But, spend $200 and learn how to work on the guitar, upgrade a few things and you'll make it play and sound like a $1000 guitar.
this is right on
Agreed. All my guitars are on the inexpensive side. Most but not all cheap guitars can be brought to an acceptable state with a little work and not much $$$.
You like how you kept it clean too I'm a fan and there was no grinding out crappy distortion trying to demonstrate how cool you are. That was a great demo
Thanks so much! Always gotta hear it clean!
Thanks for demoing the Donner DST 152.Looks and sounds great. Thanks for sharing!!
I’ve got a few expensive guitars that I just love. I look at them like investments that each of my 3 sons will get. I also have a couple inexpensive guitars ( not as cheap as this one) one I just bought- the 40th anniversary Squire Telecaster . I LOVE YOU BIG TIME! I bought my sons each a strat combo like this one when they were little from Guitar Center and they were awesome. We gave them away to neighbors that had kids interested in learning but I somehow have one of the amps that came with and it’s nice. Rock on everyone and stay safe. Much love
I'm curious of your opinion of/experience with the Squier 40th Anniversary Telecaster. I bought one directly from Fender in June (black), for $599 and it looks awesome, no doubt! But it doesn't seem to sound or play significantly better than my $149 Lake Placid Blue Bullet Telecaster. Actually the 40th Anniversary's neck pickup is muddier than the Bullet's. So the 40th Ann. model is a beautiful guitar - the gold anodized hardware and the binding on the neck are eye-catching! But it's certainly not (relatively speaking) better to the tune of FOUR TIMES the price of the Bullet Tele that I bought. I am aware that no two models of the same guitar are equal and depending on what you buy, you may have a better or worse experience, even buying two identical guitars from the same retailer. How is your experience with it?
love the clean style demo instead of crunch....sounds good sean....guess i gotta get one
Sean, the keeper of secrets and the man up to every challenge, every pentatonic pattern has a pattern of the 4th, the subdominant, and a pattern of the 5th, the dominant, that can be played on top of it at the same frets and practically make the the diatonic pattern out of the pentatonic pattern just from playing the 2 patterns together. Can you make a video of this of this phenomenon and the migration to the perfect 4th and perfect pattern on the neck? I migrate using the adjacent string technique or counting frets.
I am looking forward to seeing your videos include some more topics on migration and the expanding the use of of diatonic patterns and lead playing with pattern to pattern migration.
I like how that humbucker with the cover looks on a strat. Or a tele, even.
I agree position one should be the neck pickup that's the best pickup on the strat and I love the fact that they put a chrome cover on the humbucker very classy
#facts
I love everything you do the presentation you're playing your humor your guests keep up the excellent work Sean. Some of the gems of UA-cam along with your buddy stitch
I prefer the neck pickup on any guitar I play. I agree with position 1
Great Demo
I have reviewed some Donner instruments on my channel and have always been impressed by the quality and value of their instruments.
Yeah they're good builds!
it's truly amazing if you look hard enough, you will certainly have a very reasonably priced gem on your hands!
It is amazing the difference between budget guitars now and just a few years ago. My guitars range in price from $450 to over $4K, and really - playability with a good setup - not a huge difference. Sound? Yeah, you can hear a difference. But it's honestly not thousands of dollars of difference. Will the $4K guitar have fewer issues over the long haul? It better or I'll be visiting Maryland...
Do you have a video on how to connect your instruments and amp for UA-cam recording (for noobs)? Any special software? Your setup sounds better than most. Thanks.
Amazing value!
At "Position One" at 6:45 it sounded quite similar to Dear Marie. That might be a JM song that you don't hate too much?
haha i don't hate John Mayer! I just need to check the internet fanboys sometimes
I have one it is really nice. Mine was way under $200 on sale with coupons you can land one of these for about 150.
I've wondered about the Donner line of products. Can't shake the "Donner Party" imagery when I see the name..........Anyhoo, is there a chance you could review an electronic drum kit from them? Well done, informative vid as usual, sir. Thanks
@Skippy - the strings are for flossing after you eat...
already done! ua-cam.com/video/PRDGhNFi5MU/v-deo.html
@@seandaniel23 Outstanding, thank you sir
Looks like this is a better guitar than a Harley Benton ST style, especially when you consider shipping with the HB's.
Are these Alnico pick ups? I know they're Korean made, but not sure about the magnet(s).
Is it a 9.5" fretboard radius or a 12"? Does it feel flatter than a typical fender or squier?
IMO, good pickups = good sound. All the other stuff is secondary and it depends on how nice of components you want to have and how many embellishments you want. Not to say it's not worth the extra money, but as far as sound goes, you just need good pickups.
How do you tune this baby, just got one but came with no instructions
Where the strings fairly decent straight out of the box with a get you by for a while till you can get some better strings or would you recommend going ahead and having your new pair of strings on standby
Def good enough to get you by. I always prefer elixir strings but the stock ones have been good.
Kudos on a guitar demo that didn't involve 15 minutes of playing through the dirtiest amp setting.
Anyone know the fretboard radius?
I'm kinda in the market for an SSH and this looks like an inexpensive candidate.
Didn't most guitars just inflate by at least $200? Crazy! Cheers Sean!!
Haven’t played for years but got the urge to pick up a guitar and play recently (sold all mine when we moved 😖) - thanks for the useful review and info, should be coming tomorrow. 👍
Congrats! You’re gonna love it!
How is it?
how has it been with it
@@balued9624 I ended up getting one as well after seeing so many positive reviews. I've never had an electric to compare it too but I really do just love it. It's fantastic for what I use it for anyway
@@stevem9529 Tysm :)
Is that a major unboxing or is it a minor unboxing or is it a dominant 7 unboxing or is it a maj7 unboxing I'm getting very frustrated I don't understand I kid
major 7 obviously
Is it on the light or heavy side? Thanks.
Good question. I think it's definitely right in the middle. Maybe a little heavier than I expected, but by no means would I consider it a heavy guitar.
RU now in Austin or still situated in my old hometown of Sarasota, Sean?? Just curious...........I'm now in the Dallas area......Jim C.
Still in austin for the rest of the month
I just got one of these for 70 USD delivered., Bruh, its amazing.
Donner doing it again
always bringing the heat
Perhaps you could connect with an artisan who could make a guitar out of all that CD material.
Accepting all applicants
what size strings come on it?
Pretty sure they were .10s
How does Donner compare with Harley Benton?
I've still yet to play a Harley Benton!
I would hazard a guess HB is a shade upmarket from Donner, closer to $350, $500 and more. I could be off, but HB is Budget+, I think.
Cheap guitars have come a long way and now you can get a decent instrument for a low price, which is great for beginners or people who just don't want to spend a lot.
Wonder how playable were the frets? Sharp edges? Smoothed ?
People make this topic into a deal breaker...its a easy fix..buy a small fine file or even your girlfriends nail file..tape of frets and your done in half an hour. For 200 bux you really cant expect it to be perfect.
Or just spend $30 - $50 at your friendly neighborhood luthier, ask for a setup & fret trim. It's definitely worth the time to cultivate a relationship with luthiers, music stores, etc.
@@wanab1082 I know, I was just asking. I have the specialized file. I've done it myself.
DST-152B... I mean, I'm sure there's a better way to name products, no? 😄
It looks like a good deal yes.
yeah i need to consult on the naming
I agree. Better to call it by a name. Albert, maybe. Or perhaps a made up name, like Gronk, Snurge or Scroffblister. I'd buy a Scroffblister.
The link in the description is for a different model. FYI
Hmmm... My daughter has just started learning guitar. If I asked you to compare the best guitars in the $175-$250 price range could you give an honest review? Or are you unable to because Donner gives you a lot of stuff. Can I trust your assessment?
Well the only reason you might not want to take my word for is that the Donner ones are the only one in that price range I remember playing. So I'm probably biased because they send me stuff but I really do like it. I think my favorite thing they've sent is the DST-400.
@@seandaniel23 Why do you like the DST-400 better? I see that it is currently $30 cheaper than the DST-152. What are the differences?
Is the neck a "d" shape ?
c
@@seandaniel23 Thanks. I'd like to try that out. I have a Les Paul Epiphone Pro with the humbuckers that split. I love the tones, but the d neck, I never really felt as smooth. I started on a Fener acoustic with a c & have always loved the feel. Like it was part of my arm. But the Epiphone feels less comfortable & natural. But, it sounds great. But I like that 2 single coil with the humbuckers on that 200 dollar guitar. Lots of options on that. Thanks for showing it. Great video.
Donner Dst400 is better?
i think so. both are good but the 400 is impressively good
@@seandaniel23 thanks ,saludos desde México
Ya know what bugs me about Donner? It's the name. Every time I see a Donner guitar I think of the Donner Party, the unfortunate mid-19th century folks who became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountains and ended up eating one another to survive. Is that weird of me? I spose it is.
They're trying to change the narrative :)
Sean! Your on sabbatical! Why are you posting videos and doing reviews? Aren't you supposed to be taking a break, writing and relaxing in a different city? The cheap guitar has come a long way!! Hope your taking some time for yourself there!! 8) --gary
haha i can do both :)
Face it, you're Mr. Studbucker.
i ask me why guitar presentors dont want to show at least the Switch positions in the videos!!! Thats much more important than the room furniture or haircut style of the play, even his face
can be cut, BUT NOT THE SWITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first thing you do when you learn guitar buy a guitar
I'm not a fan of "good for the money" anything. To me that translates to "if you can't afford a good guitar get this one. It's terrible but it's good for the money". Another reviewer actually said that this Donner was "perfectly usable"! Now that is a stellar review. Donner: It's better than nothing.
kevin O'Rourke
“If you can’t afford a good guitar” is a very real thing for a lot of players (or parents.)
I see what you're saying, but I think it's unfair to compare something like this to a MusicMan or something. Especially for someone starting out and unsure if they want to make a big investment in a guitar $1,000 or more, this thing would be great.
To be perfectly frank, Mr. O'Rourke, I don't think you've played a budget guitar in over ten years. I suspect you might not play at all, for even the most lackadaisical player wouldn't utter such jejeune sentiments. Any who's played in the last twenty years knows this is a Golden Age of Budget Guitars.
And I've been playing 45 years. In 1976, when you bought a cheap guitar, that's exactly what you got. Inexpensive guitars right now can be quite good. Last year, I bought a NoName Best Products six string acoustic electric with a small 10 W amp and it's what I play default at home. It's plays nicely, except as you get real high, the action isn't what it could be.
I've got a Samick Teleclone for $169 that plays and sounds great.
If you pay $1000, you get very good playability. For $2500, awesome action. For acoustics, you will definitely pay for quality builds.
You can buy a very playable acoustic for $350.
Seriously, Sean's being polite. You seem wholly unacquainted with instruments of the last decade or more.
@@JESL_TheOnlyOne You are incorrect. I have played a budget guitar recently. I just haven't found one that I like well enough to purchase. I do play, but I'm pretty average, but hey, I'm 72 yrs. old and yes, I'm lackadaisical about most things and my hands are not what they used to be. Live well and prosper John Lee.
@@KevinORourke25 My apologies, but I wasn't deprecating you, just incredulous. Seriously, almost any axe you can pick off the rack will play. It's not the old days.
Good luck.
Sort your camera angles out mate - viewers can’t see the control selection while you’re professing about them
Its super out of intonation. easy to fix with a couple little wrenches.
Cheap cheap cheap.

It is not our job as guitar players to get involved with politics and War and certainly not unboxing
fair
So now you have joined "the unboxers" eh? Is there no end to this crap?
Have you not seen previous unboxing videos by Sean (and Andrea)?
They are pros at this point...
pretty sure we've unboxed like 100 things at this point
