Crazy!!! These videos of people revisiting the old systems are hilarious (and making me feel old). But I actually owned a TurboGrafx 16 handheld with TV adapter... it was SO ahead of its time! I ended up selling the thing on eBay like 10+/- years ago. Keep up the great videos! Cheers.
I have a soft spot for the TG-16, but ultimately it was a system that fell in the tail end of the 8-bit era before the 16-bit era. It makes sense to me in retrospect that I had the NES for years, I got the TG-16 before the SNES came out and it feels like a bridge, even though the PCE/TG-16 could outperform the SNES in games like shooters with large numbers of sprites with no slowdown.
Parker Holt That's great, Parker! I had a few problems rendering this one - it kept crashing my PC! I hope you enjoy the video! Any comments or feedback that you could give me is very much appreciated! Just one thing though, I'd suggest holding off and waiting until UA-cam process the full resolution, 60 frames per second version of the video!
xiaochicash it was but it was blazing fast just as fast as the Genesis 16 bit CPU! But unlike the Genesis 16 bit address bus and SNES 8 bit address bus the TurboGrafx 16 had a 21 bit address bus! So it's CPU was very comperable! Oh don't forget it had a true 16 bit GPU with 482 on screen colors! Amazingly powerful 8 bit machine!!!!!
@@kh7955 I think the biggest issue was NEC marketing was sporadic and cheesy (for example, the intro of this video). They did a poor job marketing their product and it showed. Nintendo did not need to market SNES and still did, Genesis had cool ads and was the "cool system" thanks to that. My parents got me Turbo Grafix-16 for my birthday after I begged for it for almost a year. Nintendo hurt them badly also with their "if you make games for us, you cannot make them for anyone else" policy back then, which should have been unlawful! It really was an amazing system and felt more futuristic than the SNES and Genesis in looks and the size of cartridges (not to mention it was the first with a CD-ROM attachment). The accessories were very expensive for younger gamers and the fact it only had mono sound output without an expensive $100 adapter was quite stupid and a bad oversight in an otherwise solid package. But I loved mine and still play the games with my emulators to this day!
+Grey GooTheory Should have been #1....In my book many many hours of play and just played it last month. Also Ninja Spirit should have been in top 10 for me and where was Chew Man Fu,Legendary Axe,Silent Debuggers,Veigues Tactical Gladiator. Way better to me than some listed here.
+snatcher420 Chew Man Fu sat at #46. Silent debuggers and Legendary Axe (and JJ & Jeff) nearly made the cut, until I went to record footage for them and realised that they werent anywhere near as good as I remembered them being.
+snatcher420 oh, and if you like Veigues Tactical Gladiator, please give the PC-88 Original a go. It might have stuttering scrolling, but I prefer the grittier tone of the visuals to the bright "pop-y" visuals of the TG16 / PCE version
The Turbographix is one of my favorite classic game consoles alongside the SNES and Genesis. My favorite games were Legendary Axe Splatterhouse and Bonk.
+clockworkrazor I never owned one until adult life, WAY after the system's original lifespan. Upon reflection, it was a superb machine with some extremely accomplished titles that I'm sorry I missed out on in the early 90's.
Wow, so many games that I now need to try...thanks for uploading this! You've earned yourself a subscriber :D looking forward to your list of TurboCD games!
+TheZealousBanjo Fantastic! Thanks for the sub, and I'm so pleased you've discovered some new games! Turbo CD lists will be done at some point in future, but first we've got Master System, Game Boy Color, and possibly NES too!
You're welcome! Man, I'm looking forward to getting a TG16 hopefully this holiday season (though my dream is to get a modded Duo R one day...!). I'll look forward to those lists!
Yep. Precisely why. Also, they didn’t want the religious aspects in the game either as they didn’t want to affect Christianity-loving westerners, so one of the levels was heavily edited and trimmed to remove certain aspects of it
However the batshit crazy thing is the arcade cabinet version in the U.S was spot on so something else was going on from the higher ups that caused that version to be changed. My guess is like u said when they were fucking around reprogramming it due religious aspects they said fuck it lets change some more shit so it justifies are paycheck.
Cool list... can't say I agree with the placement of most of your choices but I can't disagree with the choices themselves. Warms my heart that there are so many great games on the system even though there were less than 300 hucards released. For my money the PC/Grafx had the best quality to quantity game ratio ever.
There are a lot of "good games" on PC Engine but not much "awesome games". In comparison the Mega Drive and SNES have better libraries, sure they have more stinkers but also more standout games and more overall variety (the PC Engine hardware is quite limited to handle genres such as beat 'em ups, run 'n guns or racing games as good as what the MD/SNES can do). Also multiplats are usually better on Mega Drive/SNES than on PCE.
WOW! There are SO many INCREDIBLE games NOT on this list! No Dead Moon? No Psychosis? No DRAGON'S CURSE??? No SHOCKMAN??? Ummm...no Magical Chase? No Legendary Axe 1 OR 2? No Download? No Batman? No Time Cruise? No Twinbee? Falcon and Gunboat? Really?? C'mon man.
Awesome list and video......but i have a question! How did you capture the PC Engine footage SO cleanly? Some sort of HDMI upscaling? very impressive! Would of loved to of seen Chase HQ, MR Heli and The Ninja Warriors in the list but all well....... thanks for the video!
The best way to get crisp video recordings from actual hardware is to RGB mod your TG16 / PC Engine system (I have a modded PC Engine Duo R). This gives you the crispest source to work with, which you can run through your capture device (in my case, an Elgato Game Capture HD card recording on highest bitrate) Then load up Sony Vegas 13 or similar editing software, import and upscale from there. Chase HQ and Mr. Hell were SO close to making the list. Ninja Warriors On the other hand.....
@@Juganawt You have SCI on your list. Wouldn't it have been against your own set of rules to include Chase HQ then? It's a sequel, after all. (Then again, you also included more than one game from the Star Soldier series).
+Juganawt I think it was way better than the SNES and Genesis ports at the time. I remember when I ran into the TG16 version at a con after playing the SNES (and occasional Genesis) versions in the 90s. I was surprised. It was strictly better in every way. I think the first SF2 version on SNES to overtake it was Super. I think the reason for this was the SNES and Genesis versions were all based on the original port of the game for the SNES (World Warrior). It was good but clunky. Rather than port Champion Edition or Hyperfighting from scratch, I think they just converted the World Warrior port to the new editions (and then ported to Genesis for Champion Edition.) But the TG version felt like an entirely new port. I was watching this and was thinking "Where is Street Fighter?" And getting more frustrated the closer you got to number one. Really pleased to see it at the top. It is one of those games that truly shows what developers can do with a limited console late in its life if given a chance.
+Patricia Cross Errr, no. The PC Engine version of Street Fighter 2 is worse than both Mega Drive and SNES. The PC Engine version doesn't even run fullscreen, lacks parallax scrollings, lacks turbo options, lacks the third bonus stage... I could go on and on... Also both the PC Engine and SNES versions lack the CPS-1 combos whereas the Mega Drive version has them all. The Mega Drive version is easily the best overall but it's actually this version which should have been made from scratch cuz the Mega Drive could have handled an even better version but it was based on SNES limited assets (same for the PCE port btw) while the Mega Drive could have run the game in higher resolution, with bigger sprites and such.
@Markus Müller I "harvest" my roms individually based on what I ascertain from UA-cam mainly. If you Google "no intro roms" your first match may give you what you're after. You'll have access to entire sets or single roms as I already said. Hit me back if I can be of anymore assistance.
I’m so glad I found your top 50 videos they are approaching classic status I watched the super Nintendo and Genesis videos already so this one is going to be very interesting 💫😅 The 16 bit era was crazy amazing 🏆🛋🦍
Hi, I know it's impossible to satisfy everybody with this kind of video, but I'm surprised not to see Final Match Tennis... Have you already played it? (and I don't even like sport games) If not, you really should give it a try, the gameplay and the physic algorithm are way out of any league, still 25 years later. Cheers!
Of all the games showcased here , Salamander, Afterburner II and Outrun were the most notable games on the system. Not to say that other other games were bad at all. But those titles were very good ports on this system. I guess that's why the Turbo GrafX-16 wasn't as popular in the US as opposed to the over seas market.
+P0V3RTY09 the TG16 was a powerhouse in comparison to its peers and should have grabbed a bigger market share. The problem is, NEC's marketing department simply SUCKED and totally screwed up the sales approach for the system. Look at my intro for prime examples of it!
The PC Engine wasn't powerful enough compared to the Mega Drive/SNES nor it was well-designed enough: only one controller port, forced to buy the CD add-on cuz most of the library was released on it, no light gun support... marketing has nothing to do with all of this. And the Mega Drive was also poorly marketed in some regions, especially in Japan where it had much less exposure than the PC Engine while the PC Engine benefited of the huge PC-88/98 userbase as well as further exposure through tournaments such as Hudson' caravan stages.
I would have given Military Madness the #1 spot I played it way more than street fighter and I played SF alot. I still to this day play Military Madness on Turbo Grafx 16
I definitely would have devils crush higher up the list its one of the best pinball video games of all time I also would have put bonk higher, people bought the system for that game alone. Also where is legendary axe?it definitely should be on that list.
It is appalling how badly the marketing assholes fucked up the PC Engine in the USA. If they would have just sold the PC Engine, it would have been a huge hit and captured the market. Instead, they redesigned to case to make it much bigger and stupider looking, they rewired the game connectors , so it was incompatible with the thousand or so games already out. They rewired the controller connectors, so none of the hundred or so controllers in Japan would work. All this sabotage delayed release in the USA until after the Super NES came out. Most of the games shown here were NOT available for the TurboGrafix 16, so this is very misleading.
mrnickbig1 Even though there are slight differences between TG-16 and PCE, much like the Super Nintendo and the Super Famicom, I class them as the same hardware. You can play Japanese PCE games on a US TG-16 with the aid of a Kisado converter. Funnily enough, it's weird that it's only the Chip based games that are region locked - TG-16 CD games run on PCE CD and vice versa - no converter required (there will be a CD based list in the future, too). Unfortunately the PCE library never made it past 350 titles (the TG-16 had less than 100), but it did have over 400 cd-based games compared to the TG-16's measly 50. And yes, USA did screw up the marketing totally and utterly. Could be worse though - They didn't even bother to officially release the console here in rainy ol' England, instead forcing us to buy imported PAL modified consoles and games.
The stupid changes to the console delayed the release for YEARS! They rewired the card connectors AND the peripheral connectors. I have a PC Engine, with about 100 games that I bought 1987-1989. If NEC would have simply sold the console as is, they would have captured the US market.
+mrnickbig1 I don't know about capturing the U.S. Market, but it certainly would have gotten a fair market share (much larger than the Master System's) and would have been worthy competition to the later Genesis/Megadrive. I don't think that, even in 1987, any new competitor could rival the NES. The library was too big, the brand was too strong, and Nintendo was synonymous with video games. I just wish it had gotten a full release here. The NES wasn't so popular in the UK and Europe, and instead home computers and the Sega Master System ruled the roost. I wonder if the PCE would have changed that...
mrnickbig1 the big anti Japan feel during the 80's in the USA was still fading at that time, and people liked big bulky USA made things, I don't know if the really japanese PC-Engine design would made it any better. It was really difficult to get a share of Nintendo's market at that time, it would have needed a whole great marketing plan and a huge insvestment to success, like Sega did. NEC was focused in Japan, were they were doing it fairly well, it was Sega who needed to open to new markets.
It also looks like the games are being played with Overscan and a bit of blur or filter... the picture is a good bit sharper on my actual system. Is this just a UA-cam compression effect? I went and hooked my console up and flipped back n forth between the inputs for my computer and game console, screen for screen comparing New Adventure Island, and my actual console thru RGB does actually look a bit sharper and more colorful than the UA-cam vid here, but now this is making me want to turn the Sharpness down some as this does look very nice and smooth on here. EDIT - I have been playing with the Sharpness, Brightness and Color for the past half hour and still cannot get my picture to look as smooth as this even with Sharpness down to 0. There MUST be some sort of light filter being used here... Juganawt, can you confirm this? Would really like to get my picture looking as smooth as this.
No filters, but the system is being run through a HD upscaler and an Elgato HD capture device, so a little bit of colour and sharpness is lost, then UA-cam butchers the bitrate and a LOT of detail is lost (I record at 30mbit and UA-cam outputs it at around 5mbit at 1080p for audio and video combined) One of these days, I aim to upgrade my current El Cheap-and-Nasty-O upscaler to a FrameMeister, which would make the visuals even more true to the system's native format and remove the output lag (hopefully making me able to show more skilled play in my videos) - Infact that's one of the reasons I decided to start a Patreon campaign, as I've been recording N64 footage and it looks absolutely terrible through my current setup! Thanks for watching!
+Juganawt - No problem. lol funny how it seems like the blur from the Chinese Upconverter makes the game look more smooth... maybe my TV settings are sub-par. I am using the Retroconsoleaccessories RGB cable, so I dunno what else I could do to improve the quality. Perhaps I am expecting too much... it is an old pixelated game after all lol. Are you widening the picture at all? Because the picture looks slightly wider than the standard 4 by 3 ratio. Also looks like theres some Overscan, cutting off a slight bit of the top and bottom of the screen.
+skins4thewin no, I don't widen the picture, I do the opposite! My HD upscaler stretches the screen to 16:9 as default and, using a template, I have to re-adjust the image back to 4:3 using my video editing software, which is time consuming and, again, is another reason why I really need to get myself a FrameMeister I think! Maybe one day!
Lol well I certainly hope you get one someday, it is worth every penny! Once you have one you will hate playing without it. That being said, I don't think it needs half the features it has, I dont use 80% of what it offers. I wish I could sacrifice all of those features for a nice HQ2x or Scale2x filter. That would be Retro gaming heaven! One thing worth noting is that there is nothing wrong at all with the cheap Ebay scaler, in fact it's quite a good value. No, it doesn't give the absolute best picture quality but it does pretty darned good for as cheap as it is. There really isn't a huge leap in quality from that to the Framemeister. It does add some screen tearing though and some significant input lag which the Framemeister doesn't have an issue with. The biggest difference I think are the colors. The colors are a good bit more vibrant and detailed with the Framemeister. Picture quality wise though, the difference is only minor in my opinion.
+TheZealousBanjo There was also a sequel on the PS2, released in Japan all the way back in 2001 (imaginatively titled "Photograph Boy 2"). Check it out if you can!
Marketing screwups meant that it was a bit of a distant third place in the US, and a non-Starter in Europe. In Japan though it outsold the Megadrive (Genesis) for a couple of years.
+CryptedSky The PC Engine wasn't powerful enough compared to its rivals the Mega Drive/SNES nor it was well-designed enough: only one controller port, forced to buy the CD add-on cuz most of the library was released on it, no light gun support... marketing has nothing to do with all of this. And the Mega Drive was also poorly marketed in some regions, especially in Japan where it had much less exposure than the PC Engine while the PC Engine benefited of the huge PC-88/98 userbase as well as further exposure through tournaments such as Hudson' caravan stages.
+CryptedSky Cheers :) I think that the PC Engine tends to be overrated (just look at some other comments here...) but it's also overlooked, some games for it deserve more exposure. As for the popularity, as I explained it was very popular in Japan. The already existing and huge NEC PC-88/98 userbase helped a lot but the system was also well exposed through marketing and tournaments. Lastly, the fact that it was the first system with CD games also helped, this meant games with anime cutscenes and all, something that the japanese market has always been fond of. But the PC Engine never caught the same attention in other regions. Probably that the system's limitations were more apparent there, I notably think about the single controller port, the rather limited sound or the lack of parallax scrollings support. Also the games weren't as groundbreaking nor as original as what can be found on Mega Drive or SNES. And again the fact that most of the library was released for the CD add-on didn't help either. Also worth mentioning that the PC Engine was sold in some european countries. It was officially distributed in France and also sold in uk, spain... but it never really took off there either unlike the Mega Drive or SNES.
Bikkuriman World... looks kinda familiar but the one I was thinkin about wasn't calked that... can't remember what it was called at the moment. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? 😎
I just played a poop-m-up.... You did break one of your rules: Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier are same franchise (maybe even Gunhed belongs there). I really miss some: Galaga 88, Dragon Spirit and Kyukyoky Tiger.
These kind of videos make me wish the TG Mini's Project Phobos was already complete, to add all these games (unless they are already featured, of course :p )
I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Project Phobos, too. The PC Engine / TG16 / Core Grafx Mini has a solid library of games, but there are definitely some extra ones that I'd like to put on there to save me from pulling out my Turbo-Duo R every time I want to play them.
***** No unfortunately I don't have an Everdrive. It's something I might invest in at some point in the future as there are lots of games I'd like to play but don't yet own, but right now, if I was going to buy an Everdrive, it'd be for the Nintendo 64 - I want to make a "Top 64" list for it, but my carts were water damaged from storage, and N64 emulation is, frankly, disastrous.
Yeah, Tales from the Monster Path was considered for the list originally, but when I played it again to record footage, I'd forgotten how unfair and annoying it really was! Still kinda fun, though!
+horror36 Chan & Chan nearly made it, but upon replaying it to record footage, it wasn't as fun to play as I remember it being, so I dropped it from the list. Ninja Warriors, on the other hand, was never considered. I never really liked the arcade game, and have no idea what made the game so popular. I was given a copy of the Amiga version, and a japanese copy of the Sega Mega CD version was bundled with my Mega CD 2, and I didn't like either version. The only version I did like, was the SNES semi-remake, which was an amusing pastime....but I wouldn't consider any of the Ninja Warriors games to be among the best that any system has to offer.
Oh, and what kind of RGB mod did you do to your system? Are you streaming off a Duo-R, Duo-RX, CoreGrafx, which? I personally have an RGB modded Duo-R, but it has one of the older RGB mods that uses the older THS7314 chip instead of the superior THS7374. I really want to upgrade my RGB mod to the better chip eventually.
Like you, I have an RGB modded Duo-R with the Arcade Card. I’ve also got the Core Grafx mini pre-ordered, and am thinking about upgrading my Duo-R for a PC-Engine / TerraOnion SD combo.
@@Juganawt Eh, I've heard too many bad things about that TerraOnion Add-On. I hear it still has some minor Audio-Video issues, even after they revised the board to fix some of the major issues it had. Supposedly they are aware of the ongoing issues but refuse to revise the board again to fix them. Due to that, I may never buy one of those. I do have their Mega SD tho which is quite fantastic, although I still prefer to play on my JVC X'EYE as it's RGB & audio output are simply fantastic. Seriously, it outputs crystal clear RGB and audio. It's quite impressive.
+Dopey Donald if i remember correct they changed voice sound in super street fighter...back in street fighter 2 they make same sound effects :) , so it's correct...not a pc engine fault. this should be almost arcade perfect
The Wonder Boy / Adventure Island / Bikkuriman / Monster World / Monica / Dynastic Hero / Dragon's Curse / Saiyūki World universe is a complex and convoluted one. Technically speaking, on the PC-Engine / TG-16 platforms at least, the games have no canonical relation to each other, despite the arcade origins and ties between each title when they were labelled as "Wonder Boy". So, while the inclusion of both kinda breaks the rules, they also kinda don't - it all depends on how you look at things.
Strange... I don't remember these games looking this good on my original PC Engine Duo-R, even when using RGB Out and my Framemeister! How did you get the games to look so good?
I'd imagine things would look even better on a FrameMeister? I really want to get one as I've seen what they can do and I feel it blows my setup away - especially with Nintendo 64, which I'm struggling to record cleanly at the moment. I'm also using RGB modded Duo-R, going to one of those cheap Chinese unnamed HD upscalers, which feeds through to an Elgato HD capture device for recording to PC. Then, UA-cam does its thing and applies bitrate compression down from 30mbit source to about 5.
michael Sanseverino there’s 2 main ways to play. 1. Using a standard controller and using the I II and Run buttons as attacks, with the select button switching between punches and kicks. 2. Use a 6 button controller. Not sure if there was an arcade stick ever released for the system, but the 6 button pads are lovely.
what emulator did you use to capture the game play and where are the street fighter animations from at the end? they look better than the SF2 HD remake sprites
I used my RGB modded PC Engine Turbo Duo-R along with an Elgato HD game capture card. I found the animations on a Deviant Art page - apparently they were going to be part of a community project to turn SF3 3rd Strike into full HD. The project has since been cancelled though :(

When the TurboGrafx 16 came out, one of the reasons it didn't do good is because the rumor that went around was that it had two 8 bit CPUs working together thus 16 bit! And everyone was like that sucks! Now if they would've just told the truth and said that it had one 8 bit CPU running twice as fast as the SNES CPU, and it's CPU had a 24 bit address bus unlike the SNES 8 bit address bus! And it had not one but two 16 bit graphics processors capable of displaying 482 colors on screen vs the Sega Genesis 64 on screen! They might of did better because doesn't that make it seem just as good as the competition if not better? Back then nobody mentioned that it had two 16 bit graphics processors!!! I guess there marketing department didn't study what Sega was doing! Sega was telling everyone that there Genesis was better that the SNES because of blast processing! But Sega failed to mention that the rest of their specs were inferior to the SNES! If Sega was doing that to the SNES then NEC could've done this with Sega and said the TurboGrafx 16 had 5 times the colors on screen than the Genesis had!!! I think it all comes down to marketing and NEC failed to deliver in this department!
+skins4thewin the combo notification system wasn't integrated into the SFII games until the Super Series in December 1993. The PCE version was based on SF 2 Dash Champion Edition, with a few things taken from Hyper Fighting, and was released 6 months before the arcade version of SSF2 came out.

I'm awaiting a pc-engine in the post and you've given some good games to start buying up! What plug do you use by the way? I've been told a megadrive 2 plug works
Glad to be of service! I wouldn't trust a Megadrive PSU. The plug might fit but they could very well be different polarity and / or voltage depending on the model you have. I use the default PSU that came with my Duo-R, which is then plugged into a step down transformer to change it from 110v to 220v
+LivingRad it should do, but just double check the wattage of your transformer first to make sure it's powerful enough to cope with it. I can't remember how much juice the Duo needs, but you're probably gonna need 100w or more
What about ... Final Lap Twin ... World Court Tennis .. Volleyball ... Power Golf ... Dragon Spirit ... Dragons Curse ... Bomberman ... Boxy Boy .... R-type & Much More !

What...you really don't want to DELVE DEEP?
I imagine why spatter house in the U.S was changed was it was just a lil close to Jason and no one wanted a copyrights nightmare.
Thanks for adding the cover art for each game. Very cool.
The shoot 'em ups on tg16 were really good.
There were absolutely loads of them, too.
Pretty much a fact apart from a small few like deep blue. Good lord what a mess
Thank you for this no nonsense video. Would have liked to see some of the lower list games higher but taste differ I quest.
This is like a console between 8 and 16 bit. The turbo grafx 12.
Thank you for 60fps, it really makes a difference
+Grace Kelly thanks! I agree, and that's why, when possible, all of my videos and live streams are at 60fps.
Really dude? No Rondo of Blood? That was the most advance and highly regarded also the most expensive with incredible gameplay in the PC Engine.
zhaoyun255 it's not a PC-Engine game. It's a PC-Engine CD game. Separate lists coming for CD based games.
WOW! There are SO many INCREDIBLE games NOT on this list!
No Dead Moon?
No Psychosis?
No DRAGON'S CURSE???
No SHOCKMAN???
Ummm...no Magical Chase?
No Legendary Axe 1 OR 2?
No Download?
No Batman?
No Time Cruise?
No Twinbee?
Falcon and Gunboat? Really?? C'mon man.
Ah! There it is. 6:24 [Such a shame. I don't even see Salamander/Life Force on that list either.]

thanks
Yeah... Devil's Crush doesn't sniff Time Cruise's Jock Strap
Make your own list instead off being butthurt in the comments then
These old consoles are way better than today's consoles
Awesome list and video......but i have a question!
How did you capture the PC Engine footage SO cleanly? Some sort of HDMI upscaling? very impressive!
Would of loved to of seen Chase HQ, MR Heli and The Ninja Warriors in the list but all well.......
thanks for the video!
The best way to get crisp video recordings from actual hardware is to RGB mod your TG16 / PC Engine system (I have a modded PC Engine Duo R). This gives you the crispest source to work with, which you can run through your capture device (in my case, an Elgato Game Capture HD card recording on highest bitrate)
Then load up Sony Vegas 13 or similar editing software, import and upscale from there.
Thanks for sharing! I am planning to buy a PC-Engine. Your video inspires me which games I should buy along with the machine. :D
This console feels like it was the perfect transition between the 3rd and 4th generation of consoles !
What? No Legendary Axe!
+Alfredo Gomez Jr. Nope. To me it just wasn't legendary enough to be included. It's a solid game, but not one of my favourites.
+Juganawt I expected to see it on your list. Often called the best Turbo game. That said I wasn't too crazy about it.
But Gunboat was?
@@Juganawt Wtf? You mean to tell me you liked “Falcon” more than Legendary Ax?.... 😳
Seriously? that street fighter is running on a 8-bit CPU? That is truly amazing!!! It really plays like the arcade, not much a difference.
+redpanda416 It really was an absolutely beautiful conversion indeed!
It is one of those games that truly shows what developers can do with a limited console late in its life if given a chance.
the Snes is virtually 8bit two. Its processor is slow as hell. Both systems rely on DSP graphics chips
+Patricia Cross
Errr, no.
@@yohkom.7988 Turbo on SNES is best of all street fighter games on the 3 systems.
Thanks for making this list
haiaokuwa Thanks for watching
AWSOM list. All the ones I didn't comment on where the ones I have eather never played or herd of before. None the less cool list. 😎👍👍

@Markus Müller I apologize. I'm not sure what you mean by "everdrive packs." Perhaps you can try to explain it to me.
@Markus Müller I "harvest" my roms individually based on what I ascertain from UA-cam mainly. If you Google "no intro roms" your first match may give you what you're after. You'll have access to entire sets or single roms as I already said. Hit me back if I can be of anymore assistance.
I’m so glad I found your top 50 videos they are approaching classic status
I watched the super Nintendo and Genesis videos already so this one is going to be very interesting 💫😅
The 16 bit era was crazy amazing 🏆🛋🦍
16 bit era games are way better than majority of the PS5 games from 2023.
Never known that Kikikaikai Ninja was released for PC Engine. I thought it was SNES exclusive. Thx for including it!
Thanks for watching? nooo..thanks to you for do this great videooo!!
Great list. Non-obvious choices, and lots of interesting obscurities for me to look up.
BTW, I think you got a couple of emails.
I would put Motoroader,Ninja Warriors,Twin Cobra and Tales of Monster Path on that list, personally. But i loved Bloody Wolf.
Hi, I know it's impossible to satisfy everybody with this kind of video, but I'm surprised not to see Final Match Tennis... Have you already played it? (and I don't even like sport games)
If not, you really should give it a try, the gameplay and the physic algorithm are way out of any league, still 25 years later.
Cheers!
+Goupil System I think I've played it before. Can't remember much about it tbh.
Parasol Stars should be in the top 5! Great Channel, anyway!
+fulgenzio1973 I'm a Bubble Bobble nut, and I loved Parasol Stars...but I love other games in my top 5 a lot more.
Street Fighter. Oh the memories. AWSOME #1. 😎👍👍
1943 KAI. Looks kinda familiar.. not to sure if I played it before...it's been such a long time ago for me.😎
Best version of 1943... sadly I only have the plain 1943 on NES.
Nice video man. Good recommendations. Subscribed... 😁👌
He was talking about the NES and Master System. Those were it's peers.
Street fighter 2 was a stellar port for the PCE
Really solid list great choices
I would have given Military Madness the #1 spot I played it way more than street fighter and I played SF alot. I still to this day play Military Madness on Turbo Grafx 16
2023 still cant belive how those PC ENGINE games are considered to be way ahead of its time and at one point, also ever rivalled SEGA GENESIS.
The graphics were WAY better than anything else, at the time. It also had better sound than most systems. The PCE took Japan by storm.
mrnickbig1 the big anti Japan feel during the 80's in the USA was still fading at that time, and people liked big bulky USA made things, I don't know if the really japanese PC-Engine design would made it any better. It was really difficult to get a share of Nintendo's market at that time, it would have needed a whole great marketing plan and a huge insvestment to success, like Sega did. NEC was focused in Japan, were they were doing it fairly well, it was Sega who needed to open to new markets.
You should have found a room in this for Zipang :p
There aren’t a ton of great games for this console but there are too many good games to ignore it.
No filters, but the system is being run through a HD upscaler and an Elgato HD capture device, so a little bit of colour and sharpness is lost, then UA-cam butchers the bitrate and a LOT of detail is lost (I record at 30mbit and UA-cam outputs it at around 5mbit at 1080p for audio and video combined)
One of these days, I aim to upgrade my current El Cheap-and-Nasty-O upscaler to a FrameMeister, which would make the visuals even more true to the system's native format and remove the output lag (hopefully making me able to show more skilled play in my videos) - Infact that's one of the reasons I decided to start a Patreon campaign, as I've been recording N64 footage and it looks absolutely terrible through my current setup!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! I have been trying to find that photography game for weeks!!!!! I thought it was a Famicom game :P
+TheZealousBanjo There was also a sequel on the PS2, released in Japan all the way back in 2001 (imaginatively titled "Photograph Boy 2"). Check it out if you can!
Such a good system, I don't understand why it wasn't more popular...
Marketing screwups meant that it was a bit of a distant third place in the US, and a non-Starter in Europe. In Japan though it outsold the Megadrive (Genesis) for a couple of years.
+CryptedSky
The PC Engine wasn't powerful enough compared to its rivals the Mega Drive/SNES nor it was well-designed enough: only one controller port, forced to buy the CD add-on cuz most of the library was released on it, no light gun support... marketing has nothing to do with all of this. And the Mega Drive was also poorly marketed in some regions, especially in Japan where it had much less exposure than the PC Engine while the PC Engine benefited of the huge PC-88/98 userbase as well as further exposure through tournaments such as Hudson' caravan stages.
Thanks both of you for the explanations!
+CryptedSky
Cheers :)
I think that the PC Engine tends to be overrated (just look at some other comments here...) but it's also overlooked, some games for it deserve more exposure.
The intro is ridiculous lol
Such an underrated system
pure gold channel ❤️
Hopefully this system deserves a re-release, just like SNES mini
Great video, great list! You just forgot to include Final Match Tennis ;)
+Massimo Villa Yeah, I'd say I'd put that one above Gunboat... then again Gunboat wouldn't even make a top 50 on my list.
This is absolutely awesome

#8 @22:21 looks a lot like 'wonder boy in monster land' on the sega. Even the music and FX sound the same if memory serves
Its the same game exactly, just with a few sprite swaps.
I do believe its the best home version of the game.
Bikkuriman World... looks kinda familiar but the one I was thinkin about wasn't calked that... can't remember what it was called at the moment. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? 😎
Do you mean Wonderboy in Monsterland?
I just played a poop-m-up....
You did break one of your rules: Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier are same franchise (maybe even Gunhed belongs there).
I really miss some: Galaga 88, Dragon Spirit and Kyukyoky Tiger.
Nice port of SF2:CE. They really knew what they were doing.
These kind of videos make me wish the TG Mini's Project Phobos was already complete, to add all these games (unless they are already featured, of course :p )
I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Project Phobos, too. The PC Engine / TG16 / Core Grafx Mini has a solid library of games, but there are definitely some extra ones that I'd like to put on there to save me from pulling out my Turbo-Duo R every time I want to play them.
oh my, puzzle boy and his uberly catchy melody from hell
You get yourself an everdrive yet for the Turbo? They're awesome
***** No unfortunately I don't have an Everdrive. It's something I might invest in at some point in the future as there are lots of games I'd like to play but don't yet own, but right now, if I was going to buy an Everdrive, it'd be for the Nintendo 64 - I want to make a "Top 64" list for it, but my carts were water damaged from storage, and N64 emulation is, frankly, disastrous.
isn't very expensive. about $300 if you can find it.
Awesome video
I don't remember many games for the PC Engine. Tales from the Monster Path was one iirc
Yeah, Tales from the Monster Path was considered for the list originally, but when I played it again to record footage, I'd forgotten how unfair and annoying it really was!
Still kinda fun, though!
Nice vid.... but where was Chan & Chan (JJ & Jeff) or even Ninja Warriors??
Why do Ken and Ryu sound the same? It must be confusing if you play with a friend. :P
Y'know, I never even noticed! Ha! That's one way to shrink the game into HuCard!
+Dopey Donald if i remember correct they changed voice sound in super street fighter...back in street fighter 2 they make same sound effects :) , so it's correct...not a pc engine fault. this should be almost arcade perfect
Technically, #8 at 22:20 is the sequel to #22 at 11:50. So that kinda breaks the rules...
Blazing Lazers sounds familiar not to sure if I've played it though...😎
How do you play street fighter with 2 buttons? Was there a arcade stick
michael Sanseverino there’s 2 main ways to play.
1. Using a standard controller and using the I II and Run buttons as attacks, with the select button switching between punches and kicks.
2. Use a 6 button controller. Not sure if there was an arcade stick ever released for the system, but the 6 button pads are lovely.
What a good price for a turbo duo on eBay they are like 300 to 700. I missed out on the duo when I was new I wanted it though.
This is a great video, you should do one for the PC Engine Duo :)
Working on it. As I'm not familiar with the library, I'm playing through every single game before compiling my list. Less than 40 to go!
Thank goodness Konami released the PC Engine Mini. But....weren't games like Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier or Outrun SEGA exclusives?
Some of my favorite games left out but a great list anyways.
PC Engine was an 8-bit console that, thanks to its hardware, was able to run games with 16-bit quality.
I would exchange some of your list for others ... for example ...Life Force ...
F1 Circus... Bomberman... Batman... Dead Moon... F1 super Lap...
what emulator did you use to capture the game play
and where are the street fighter animations from at the end? they look better than the SF2 HD remake sprites
I used my RGB modded PC Engine Turbo Duo-R along with an Elgato HD game capture card.
I found the animations on a Deviant Art page - apparently they were going to be part of a community project to turn SF3 3rd Strike into full HD. The project has since been cancelled though :(
+Juganawt nooooooo, 3rd strike in HD would've been awesome. i hope it wasn't because of pressure from capcom.
It seemed they never advertised any of the good tg16 games in America. I wish we had more competing consoles again.

@nikolaikalashnikov4253 thank you
When the TurboGrafx 16 came out, one of the reasons it didn't do good is because the rumor that went around was that it had two 8 bit CPUs working together thus 16 bit!
Salamander is TOTALLY Life Force on NES
Yep. Salamander was renamed "Life Force" for the US, but kept it's original "Salamander" name in Japan and the EU.
Populus was hard to understand. Looked like you were randomly changing the map destroying what you built judt to do it again? 🤔
I'm just happy to see 50 high quality PC-Engine / TurboGrafx-16 games at 60fps!
turbo grafx 16 /pc engine was awesome back in the day.
Come on man... legendary axe, neptunia (the 1st), and Final Lap Twin. All 3 shoulda made it in the top 10
Only thing I dislike about the PC Engine version of SFII is that there are no combo notifications in the game... why this was left out is beyond me.
+skins4thewin the combo notification system wasn't integrated into the SFII games until the Super Series in December 1993. The PCE version was based on SF 2 Dash Champion Edition, with a few things taken from Hyper Fighting, and was released 6 months before the arcade version of SSF2 came out.
Ah cool, did not know that.

I wouldn't trust a Megadrive PSU. The plug might fit but they could very well be different polarity and / or voltage depending on the model you have.
I use the default PSU that came with my Duo-R, which is then plugged into a step down transformer to change it from 110v to 220v
+Juganawt ah ok I have a step down converter for a Japanese dreamcast would that work? It's a duo-r I've ordered, and I'm in the u.k as well
+LivingRad it should do, but just double check the wattage of your transformer first to make sure it's powerful enough to cope with it. I can't remember how much juice the Duo needs, but you're probably gonna need 100w or more
What about ... Final Lap Twin ... World Court Tennis .. Volleyball ... Power Golf ... Dragon Spirit ... Dragons Curse ... Bomberman ... Boxy Boy .... R-type & Much More !
Wow, why is Air Zonk so low? That's in the top 10 IMO
That opening commercial hurt my soul.
Hahaha that ending!!
