  • In a significant stride towards sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, the "GreenMoor" project was officially launched on April 5 in Elsfleth, Germany.
The four-year initiative seeks to find ways to sustain dairy farming in peatland regions by reducing emissions through site-adapted management practices.
Current discussions on peatland management often revolve around complete rewetting or wet usage with paludiculture or photovoltaics. However, the "GreenMoor" project posits that even moderate elevation of water levels through partial rewetting can make a significant impact on reducing emissions.
Adapting agricultural production to climate protection requirements is essential for the continuation of the region's dairy sector.
The Hanken family farm in Ipweger Moor serves as the experimental site, dedicating approximately 7.5 hectares to the project. This initiative will compare partially rewetted test areas with reference areas, employing adapted grazing and mowing practices, as well as adjusted fertilization strategies to achieve its goals.
