Mike Faist as Riff - West Side Story (2021) // Winter //

- My tribute to Mike Faist's standout performance as the Jets gang leader Riff in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story (2021). What an actor, what a dancer, what a talent! No copyright infringement intended.
Disclaimer: This edit is merely my appreciation for the performance and not the character's actions.
Music: Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Winter 1 (Recomposed by Max Richter) - Фільми й анімація
He was incredible. So disappointed he didn’t even get nominated.
He really was. He will have many more acclaimed performances in the future - I'm sure of it! 😁
Robbed 😩
Agreed. Everyone was amazing but he was strongest actor in the film and the obvious nominee. I was stunned he was overlooked. He took this role and made it uniquely his. It was the first time I’ve ever been scared of Riff.
literally, who got nominated for the Oscars?
@@JeanineBruen frr. I saw this film 7 times in cinemas, and even though I loved it all so much, every time he came on screen I just felt draw to it; I couldn't rip my eyes away, no matter how much I may have wanted to. this was my first experience with west side story, and I've tried to watch other productions/the 1961 film, and riff just doesn't pop as much as he does in this film. Ive loved Mike Faist for a while now, but he really surprised my with this, riff really is scary, and you can sense the danger and apathy so so easily, even just in the way he walks and moves and tiny tone emphasis in his speech. it's honestly incredible, there's no other word to describe it
Why in the world did he not get an Oscar nomination!?!
Probably didn't have a powerful somebody hustling for him behind the scenes. Hollywood is not about talent only.
I don't get it either
I'm looking forward to seeing him in his new movie, The Challengers. It's still in production and should be good with Emmy winning Josh O'Connor and Emmy winning Zendaya, also starring.
He was AWESOME. everything he does is great.
Because they care more about politics and narratives more than talent unfortunately
An incredible moment for Riff was realizing why Tony wanted to stay away from the rumble. He sees Tony beating Bernardo like he did the first guy and he reaches out his hand for a moment as if to stop him. One of my fave moments from Mike Faist in the film! So much depth brought to the character
He also didn't give his knife to Tony in order to kill Bernardo, unlike the original Riff. It changes the character completely. At the end of the day, it looked like Riff wanted to sacrifice his life for Tony because Bernardo was so eager to give him a lesson. It’s self-defence based on prejudice on both sides. What we will never know is how Riff would have reacted had he saw Tony killing Bernardo and the Jets nearly raping Anita. I think Riff was ironically the least physically violent Jet yet the most determined one to protect his territory. This boy might have had a very disturbing back-story to give us so many layers and complex contradictory emotions throughout the movie. I think that this kid was truly was “too deep” for endorsing the role of the gang leader and toxic masculinity killed him. Just like Bernardo and Tony, who couldn't assume their identity because of their respective gangs and the social appearances of the times. The creators of West Side Story confirmed the homoerotism of the musical and the Kushner/Spielberg collaboration gave us the most powerful representation of the damages of toxic masculinity on young men
Look at him when the knife fight starts. He's TERRIFIED.
Mike Faist is gifted. As are his co-stars in his upcoming movie, The Challengers, in production now. Emmy winning Josh O'Connor and Emmy winning Zendaya are also in the film. Can hardly wait to see it when it comes out!
@@runefaustblack that scene made me sob
@@cecilebarton4283 Wow I didn’t even know about that one!
Riff has always been my favorite character. However, Mike Faist surpassed my expectations. He deserves the world.
By far the best performance in the movie.
And we get to see wonderful Mike Faist in his new movie, The Challengers. It co-stars Emmy winner Josh O'Connor and Emmy winner Zendaya. It should be fantastic.
This guy would make a great Joker in about 10 years.
Fun Fact: I actually went to an open casting call for this film in New York back in 2018 and auditioned for Riff. I didn’t get the part. But, after watching this, I’m glad I didn’t. Mike Faist absolutely nailed this role
That's interesting! Which scene did you have to read for the audition?
@@frostbite7054 I actually didn’t read a scene. The audition process was really quick. They’d basically put you in a room with 3 people behind a table and a pianist on the side. You’d them be required to sing 30 seconds of either a theater song or a song from West Side Story. I sung the first verse of “Gee Officer Krupke” since that was my favorite song in the original film and also a song that was sung by Riff. So i was assuming they’d get the point that i was auditioning for Riff. Of course, as we all know, Riff ended up not singing that song in the remake. Lol
Can hardly wait to see talented Mike Faist in the film, THE CHALLENGERS. He's so gifted, he probably plays tennis well, too!
Oh yeah, the man can do anything athletic. There are clips of him doing archery and playing softball. I can’t imagine his high school years…theater, dance classes, singing…and sports?! Probably got bad grades 😜 I am totally joking. He’s just a gifted…and humble…guy.
The fact he was snubbed at the Oscar nominations is a crime of monumental proportions!
But I have lost faith in the Academy long long time ago anyway.
Well, Mike Faist will get those accolades. He's already gotten a Bafta nod for portraying Riff. And I'm so looking forward to seeing his new movie, filming now, The Challengers. It co-stars Emmy winner Josh O'Connor and Emmy winner, Zendaya! Chances are, it will be great.
If this clip was sent to the Oscars, Mike might have gotten a nomination. Well done.
He was the absolute star of the show for me. Hope he wins the BAFTA
When I saw the part when Riff died in the new West Side Story movie. I started to cry so bad, because hes and amazing actor! I'm obsessed with him!!!!!!!
Mike is terrific---talented and charismatic and all other super things. He stands out brilliantly; he doesn't need awards; but he'll get them. Just you wait. :)
Riff. This character/ actor shined in this movie....kinda my favorite
When he says: “you’re breaking my heart… “ my heart melted for him 😭🥰
Ikr
He who have won an Oscar. He's so talented.
This Riff didn't give his knife to Tony in order to kill Bernardo, unlike the original one. It changes the character completely.
At the end of the day, it looked like Riff wanted to sacrifice his life for Tony because Bernardo was so eager to give him a lesson.
It’s self-defence based on prejudice and on both sides.
But what we will never know is how Riff would have reacted had he saw Tony killing Bernardo and the Jets nearly raping Anita.
Violence perpetuates violence, in all its forms.
This boy might have had a very disturbing back-story / internalized conflict to give us so many layers and complex emotions throughout the movie.
he is a great actor
He was excellent! Dancing, acting, I can watch him again and again and not tire of it. Deserves an Oscar.
Mike lifted Riff up to a new level. Amazing job.
He was robbed. He needs to somehow get an oscar for this movie. Idc how just as long as it happens
I've watched this so many times! I totally fell in love with Riff after watching the movie and this is a stellar tribute to him!
He was my favorite part of the movie (and there were alot of good parts in it). Every time he was on the screen, I was just entranced. Amazing movie btw.
Just realized he's one of the main actors in Challengers! He was the best part of the new West Side Story imo
"How many times have you watched this?"
Me: "Yes"
😂❤
Incredible edit! Should have been his 'for your consideration' clip.
Thank you!
I watch this on repeat, I love it so much. Riff was my favorite character. Mike Faist inspires me every day to work towards being an actress on Broadway and movies. Honestly, if I met him I would have a heart attack.😄
Thank you, and good luck pursuing your dreams! 😁
I have like, the *biggest* crush on Mike Faist. ❤❤ The music fits perfectly
He´s wonderful to watch in WSS! Can´t wait for his next movies! Thanks a lot for this vid! 😁💖
Excellent mash-up! He's an incredible actor and I was just introduced to his talents on West Side Story!!
Same, I was so late to the Mike Feist game. I've made a few trips to New York in the last 20 years and I just happened to miss Newsies and dear Evan Hansen so I didn't know Mike until West Side Story. But what a pleasant surprise.
@@neonnights3955 Not gonna lie --- he's an easy crush to have - even for an "older woman"! Thank God, he's "of age"! LOL!😉😄🤣
True. This edit is amazing. And I can hardly wait to see Mike Faist in his new project, the movie, The Challengers. His co-stars are Emmy winning Josh O'Connor and Emmy winner, Zendaya. It could be one for the ages.
@@cecilebarton4283 I am so glad you informed me about his new project! I was wondering what his next role would be! Thanks for this update!!
back to daily watches of this in the lead up to Challengers: it is still unbeaten for badassness of editing
Thanks so much! I can't wait to make an edit of him as Art.
This was beautifully made, well done.
Thank you so much 🥰
@@frostbite7054 What’s the name of the music playing in the background?
That'll be Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Winter 1 (Recomposed by Max Richter)
Thank you so much for uploading this!
Wonderful compilation, stunning performance!

Dear whoever created this, consider a career as an editor. You are real good!

iconic video, i've watched this every day for like two weeks now
Oh wow, I'm happy you like it!
He was brilliant.
Never was a casting so perfect than this…
Academy award performance!
Wow I love this
Thanks for the vid, it is brilliant and gave me chills!!
Thank you!
WE LOOOOVE HIM
Best Riff ever.
I’ve watched this edit three times in ten minutes.
I’ve watched this everyday this week I think you’ve broken me
this is the best thing ive ever seen
Mike Faist did a terrific job. He captured the role very well. I guess they traded Russ Tamblyn's spunkiness and acrobatics for Faist's acting and screen presence. It worked very well.
Mike Faist is a great actor with screen presence AND he was spunky and acrobatic in the role. Did you see him dance?
@@sieraclayton1503 Did you ever see Russ Tamblyn in the original movie? Faist was a terrific actor and dancer in his portrayal. Watch the euivalent scenes in both movies. Faist was not acrobatic. And Tamblyn was not so much a dancer or actor.
Excellent!!!! Please tell me you’ll do more WSS characters

Wow! ❤ his dancing
A very athletic yet graceful dancer 😍
AMAZING

So cool
I'd love to see a remake of Newsies with him in it! :P
ME TOO!!
THAT would be AWESOME!!
Ladies and gentlemen...you are looking at the new James Dean and if he keeps his nose clean...even Elvis Presley
Why Elvis Presley?
@@hughmills442 This kids moves haven't excited people since Elvis...Mike has the jailhouse rock vibes
And I can hardly wait to see the great Mike Faist in his new movie, The Challengers, in production now. It also stars Emmy winner Josh O'Connor and Emmy winner Zendaya. This could be amazing.
Pls do Ansel Elgort as Tony next, he was phenomenal like how Mike was as Riff.
he looks SO much like me lmao
lucky fr, i look like ansel/tony lmfao
@@bangchanIover that’s cute tho
Why did I think this was Wayne
For some reason, he chose or couldn’t do a New York accent which would’ve been more authentic to me as a native New Yorker.
not enough lens flare
stole the show
Toxic masculinity killed all the main male characters in West Side Story. Tony and Riff couldn't assume their feelings for each other in front of the other Jets and look at how it ended for them.
Shut up already, masculinity isn’t toxic.
@@martinddhyj I'm sorry, what world do you live in and how do I get there?
Oh for fucks sake. You probably find too much toxic masculinity in The Vagina Monologues.
orrrrrrr white supremacy lol? like obviously it's both but i kinda feel like you're underselling the impact of racism in this story by saying toxic masculinity is responsible for the body count when any community will have toxic men--the outcome here is specifically due to the interplay between white supremacy and class oppression first, men second
also what abt anita? i guess you could say that the toxic men in the drugstore scene forced her to deliver a lie that would almost certainly lead to tony's death but i think the more difficult truth is it was that but also the racial animus experienced by almost every character in the film, and anita is no exception. sry to double comment, this remark just strikes me as odd and tbh gender is a great lens of analysis but the 'toxic masculinity' thing that is so popular atm just misses the mark for me when like, anybodys was the only non-toxic man in this whole movie lmao...maybe it's less that masculinity is toxic and more just like cis men lolol
