Kimock is one of the great explorers. A lot of great musicians say that they're not the ones playing the music, they're just hearing it - and acting as a conduit for that music, so we can hear it too. You can actually see it in Steve's face during the sublime moments at 6m28s and especially the "Ahh!" at 6m40s. Like he himself is transfixed by the beauty that he's tapped into.
For sure. This is Kimock golden era, from 200-2005. Holmes was that secret weapon that made every show great, even when someone was having an off night, he was there to make sure you left the venue just shaking your head in awe. I was lucky to have attended half a dozen shows with him on the kit.
steve is a great guy and so is his son Miles kimock, i went to high school with miles, and steve use to jam with my parents back in the day. if you like good vibes then this is the music for you. keep it up you two i heard miles is touring with you. jam away :)
Steeeeeeve!!! 6:38 Game face officially engaged... This lineup with Mitch, Rodney and Alphonso was my first introduction to Steve Kimock in August of 2002 at Waterloo Village, Stanhope NJ. It remains my favorite lineup to this day. Hell of a show...and I've been a huge fan of the Toaster ever since. Strangely, this lineup was fairly short lived just as they were at their peak. They definitely had a chance to draw on a bigger following, but Steve has always prefered to keep things intimate anyway. Steve Kimock remains one of those hidden treasures and unique artists with a small but appreciative fan base...
Always been my favorite tune since I first heard it live around '98. Seen and heard many times since and keeps evolving in ever so sweet ways. Keep on Shining Steve!
Kimock rocks! Saw him on a live broadcast with Bob Weir on TRI. I was touched. I have finally found another guitarist that is worth listening to. There are many great technical guitarist, but Kimock supercedes them with expressiveness.
I like the tone of heavy gauge, too. But I am no Steve. I did meet him in Austin. Mid 90’s at White Rabbit. Even walked around too some other clubs with him during the break. Mushroom stew.
The sound is in the hands. Someone told me that years ago and I have come to believe it. Watching Steve play is always edifying as well as entertaining.
I am shocked this video only has barely over 4k views. I think this is Steve's best playing on youtube. If you know of any better please link them so I can listen!
When the "Little Toaster" lived in Sebastapool CA -we used to see him at the Mystic -and the San Geronimo Cultural center (for 5 bucks :) )- I even went on the Zero tour to Hawaii - He is epic and keeps evolving - I never get tired of his sweet guitar sound -
I have to admit Kimock is damn good/great. This piece reminds me a bit of a Pat Matheny, as Kimock is playing. I have to also admit this is the first I have heard of him. Great band as well. Need to hear more of his stuff!!!
Zero and Kimock-Furthur and Kimock before the fall out Rumor has it Steve was Garcia's favorite guitar player! Anyone have a bootleg of the Zero late night show at the Hilton in Eugene OR on the 8-21-93 nite Garcia came out with an incredible Jack Straw to start the 8-22-93 show the next day-he and Kimock probably jammed after that show! Earth First!
I believe it was an interview in Rolling Stone magazine that Jerry Garcia was asked who his favorite guitarist was... I believe he replied Steve Kimock without hesitation.
A lot of people misunderstand what Jerry said about kimock. Jerry named 3 of his favorite guitarists who weren't being noticed and should be more well known in an interview in the late 80s. He named kimock , Michael hedges (been listening to hedges since I was in my mother's womb, check him out immediately if you dont know his work ) and I believe the third was allan holdsworth (unbelievable fusion guitarist whose a technical virtuoso but lacks the patient and spiritual playing I look for )
I had a zero sticker on my car for many years that was a math equation. Less than 1 greater than zero I think it was, or something like that. Im pretty sure it was official merch.
I see the similarity to Metheny too, although Kimrock plays much simpler music/changes, but both like to emphasize long majory licks, which sound sweet. Hair looks kind of the same too. He has a nice touch (they both do).
The drums are a bit loud in this recording, yes? I agree with the Frisell atmosphere of his guitar. And how he freely finds his way up and down the neck is amazing.
@@Marshall_Stacks yeah listening to it 9 years later on a completely different set up, the drums seem a fine volume. excellent musicianship. Go wash your shirt.
He's Steve...not like bill or Pat in their deep, deep harmonic pallette and compositional complexity and depth...but Steve is his own special thing. I'm sure he worships frisell and methany...meaning, he knows he is light years away from their mastery of the six string
Hunter Bax, I like using heavy gauge strings and find I can use a light touch. I was fortunate to be able to hang out with Steve between sets at one of the Zero shows some 20 years gone. Quiet, but intense. Memorable.
57tele, That’s so cool. I got to hang with him during a break in a Zero show here in Austin over 20 years ago. What a night. I spend a bit of time watching these YT videos. I have probably been playing longer than Steve, but I am the one watching him after all. Thanks for your comment. P.S. are you also from PA? I am from south of Pittsburgh. Been living in TX most of this life, however.

Well said
These guys were so great together. A perfect blend of East Coast precision and West Coast imagination and color.
Trenendous - just came across this and delighted I have.
The best guitarist that not enough people know about. With instrumentation he expresses more beautiful words that most great lyyricists.
Holmes on the drums. This was this sickest Kimock combo
For sure. This is Kimock golden era, from 200-2005. Holmes was that secret weapon that made every show great, even when someone was having an off night, he was there to make sure you left the venue just shaking your head in awe. I was lucky to have attended half a dozen shows with him on the kit.
Rodney Holmes and Kimock were such a dense combo, I loved that run
Me too! See every show they played at the Mystic and around the bay area and Cali festivals.
Sometimes imperceptibly, but always, forward. Even over a span of many years. Lovers come and go...

Wick! It's Brandon in the SoHum Nation~
Miles is a sweetheart
Until ya get to know him! Then you realize … Miles is a PUNK! But fuck… he’s really good at being one so there’s that !
Steeeeeeve!!!

was Waterloo 02 the show when they lost power mid-set?
@@gregadams2 It was.

I remember Steve from Bucks County, PA in the 1970's... He played all the local dives w/the Goodman Brothers -- He was amazing then.
i lived in new hope
This can end any conversation about music
I stopped talking years ago 😊
Kimock rocks! Saw him on a live broadcast with Bob Weir on TRI. I was touched. I have finally found another guitarist that is worth listening to. There are many great technical guitarist, but Kimock supercedes them with expressiveness.
Hes using freaking 14 gauge strings on his strat.. effortlessly.. what a player.
I like the tone of heavy gauge, too. But I am no Steve. I did meet him in Austin. Mid 90’s at White Rabbit. Even walked around too some other clubs with him during the break. Mushroom stew.
I finally found someone selling this DVD and can't wait to hear it in full fidelity at last. Such a great concert from the youtube vids I've seen.
I'm reminded of the days back in San Francisco at the great American music hall. My first taste of Steve and Zero live.
Guy gives me chills
RODNEY!

Agreed! Especially when about 500 are my views!
Nothing like it!

Beautiful song❣️✊

Saw him crank this with Zero more times then I count and almost all were nuggets. Great tune
My ears adore guitars playing high notes, music seems to just glide through the air 😊
Kimock is the man!
I don't think you're the first to say that!
Man this is good!
So subtle, so beautiful...great rhythm section!
Man, that's good stuff!
Just the best!!! ✨🌞✨

I imagine you've found it by now but if not here's the Zero 8-21-93 Hilton show: archive.org/details/Zero1993-08-21.shnf .

just heard about him, he's very good
This is awesome, how I never heard about this guy before !!!!
9:30. ❤
is that Alphonso Johnson on the bass?
yossarian hunter yes
I need this DVD!
Gorgeous
This is how I started my Labor day weekend. :-)
so fucking good i think im seeing them tonight
I love Alphonso Johnson. Dank archive. So Worthy. The Moose and Rodney too!
Luv ya steve!
Yes...a tad Pat Matheny. I was trying to think of who he reminded me of.....nice!!!!!
Big fan.
EPIC
nothing like being there
As much as Jerry, he keeps making me itchy...

AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Church!

NO Betta than The Guitar Monk--Steve Kimock !
The drums are a bit loud in this recording, yes? I agree with the Frisell atmosphere of his guitar. And how he freely finds his way up and down the neck is amazing.
No. You are lucky to even hear this drummer play. Rodney!
@@Marshall_Stacks yeah listening to it 9 years later on a completely different set up, the drums seem a fine volume. excellent musicianship. Go wash your shirt.
he's got the 'it' factor for sure
I find his phrasing and tone to be more akin to Bill Frisell than Pat, but beautiful none the less.
He's Steve...not like bill or Pat in their deep, deep harmonic pallette and compositional complexity and depth...but Steve is his own special thing. I'm sure he worships frisell and methany...meaning, he knows he is light years away from their mastery of the six string
Tastey as usual......Kimock is Kimock......Rodney Holmes is one of my favorite drummers......love the SKB.
one thing learned from garcia is the importance of tone
Hunter Bax, I like using heavy gauge strings and find I can use a light touch. I was fortunate to be able to hang out with Steve between sets at one of the Zero shows some 20 years gone. Quiet, but intense. Memorable.
That tone has way more to do with his love of Roy Buchanan than anything to do with Garcia.
57tele, I am inclined to agree. Steve has his influences that endeared him to Garcia.
Clayton Kusaj Yep. I grew up with Steve and have played with him a number of times over the years. He was a Roy fanatic.
I can listen to it while I'm making a cole's law. Either everyone eats it, or not to eat at all. The strange rule.
liquid gold
cross between Pat and Eric Johnson
Nice comparison. 👍
For Hinkley. I would have played this for you.
that is maybe the greatest youtube comment ever...
' listen more than you play... '
Some Alphonso Johnson🎉
MITCH!!!!
K-Waves y'all
The Dumble helps with that tone... but Steve is THE man.
Nope, he helps the dumble! :)
And for good measure they have the same hair.
If you missed ZERO, you are a zero ! Just kidding. If you missed Zero and SKB, well.....
Lol coleslaw
That's the joke, yes. One time someone asked him online about it. He said "itsnotcoleslawitscoleslaw"
