Yes yes yes! Thank you for bringing attention to this. As a holistic farrier who advocates for forage diets I often hear "performance horses need grain to do their jobs" or "forage diets only work for pasture puff horses". It's so refreshing for someone at the elite performance level to speak up about the damage that we inadvertently do to our horses by feeding them products with so many harmful additives.

LOVE this video!!! I switched to forage only feed several years ago. I can honestly say it's the best thing I have ever done for my horses. So many people think I'm crazy. Having someone like you out there competing at such a top level feeding a forage diet maybe more people will listen. 🤠🐴

Constant hay is the key. They say you should put the hay in all corners of a stall for stalled horses. It keeps them moving and chewing evenly from left to right and right to left

Yes yes yes! As a trained chef and herbalist and a goat owner you are spot on! When I took grain away from my goats and just went to forage, my parasite load dropped drastically and less gut issues. Same with people. Junk in, junk out!! Brave of you to speak the truth!!!

I love this video!! You knocked it out of the park! If we wouldn’t eat pre packaged crap filled with glyphosate and inflammatory oils..why would we feed it to our beloved animals! We’ve even done this with our cats. Kibble was created out of convenience and unfortunately it’s caused, cancer, reproductive issues, shorter life spans and inflammation in our cats&dogs as well. Great job!

Having been a hay producer, I believe you said you may test your hay. In my opinion since you are feeding only hay that is the first thing you want to test. I always provided a hay analysis. Every field is different. It will tell you about nitrates, digestablity, protiens etc. Just something to consider in your research and feeding program. I enjoy your channel !!!!

This is so refreshing! I love that the people I admire are always evolving and growing. We haven't fed grains to our horses in a very long time, we always do hay (we don't have the resources to get all the kinds but our horses are still doing great) I give out a mineral blend every few days and we put something called EMs (I forget the full name) in their water every day, it's just a fermented brew that we make from molasses, water and an EM starter, we've been using it for about 20 years now and have never had an issue with worms or any other fungus infection, it's great for gut bacteria and the horses absolutely love it, my horse won't drink water without it, I highly recommend!

Another thing, when we have a bad crop of alfalfa (it gets rained on etc.) We sell it and they make it into alfalfa cubes. Think about that when you are buying cubes.

Fascinating information. I had a friend that was a compounding pharmacist back in the early 2000's. He showed me data from Europe where canola oil was considered an industrial weight oil for machinery and banned as a food substance over there. He also spoke against soy in the diet. He spent countless hours doing research to verify what he said. Turned out that soy is a huge no no for people who have or had thyroid cancer. Spinach and almonds are very high in oxalate which form a type of kidney stone. Food and suppliments are just as you have said, not a panacea. Thank you for this video, what we put in our bodies and our animals is a dynamic process.

Great info! I've been eating organic for 15 years to turn my health around. My horses get a mix pasture grass and different grass bales to supplement in the winter. I hear you load and clear on mixing grasses. Myself alfalfa was designed and made for for cattle as my Dad sold farm equipment for 30 years. Last time I fed alfalfa grass mix and my horses colic so I ex out alfalfa completely. So glad you are spreading this information. Love those hay bags as well. Also having different types of hay for them is also I find so important, we have here meadow, Timothy and alfalfa. Thank you, thank you! I cannot agree more with ALL of what you said. I've been feeding my wild-caught Mustang, keeping her as close to her natural habitat, for the almost 15yrs I've owned her. Wild horses sure don't eat grains. Most of them look fabulous... and because they know where to get their minerals, in addition to the forage they eat. I feed Standlee timothy pellets, soaked, and add Big Sky Minerals on top. My mare has always done fabulous, but I would love to get a mineral analysis done on her. Thanks!

After doing our own research and talking to our vet we use the Redmond rock salt for our cattle and horses. Plus, Our horses are mainly forage only as well, except when we have visitors they like to give them a "treat" aka corn for the bin. And we feed our cattle forage and/or they graze there own forage. Extremely little grain (except for when fatting up to butcher the last x amount of days or out grazing corn stalks). We live in South Dakota, where there is a lot of snow and freezing cold! Our forage feeds has been working great of us for 4 years, we won't go back!

I 100% agree with you on the forage feeding!!
I did the same with my Horses for 35+ yrs and my horses never had colic or foundered!
If they needed any extra weight I added some plain rolled oats!
    Why?
Because in the wild they can find and forage oats to fatten up before winter.
I too broke my neck in a horse accident when I was 15, I only had to get a halo brace and wasn't as bad as your accident.
Your doing a great job and ignore the naysayers!

Great information!! I’m in a Australia and we feed 5x4 round bales of hay 24/7 in slow feeding hay net. I only give a bucket of feed after they’ve worked. It’s basically only beet pulp to be able to mix in and a vitamin/mineral mix for my local area. Plus salt. Keep it basic. If horses need energy/weight/topline add some alfalfa hay and they should be looking amazing. We also feed alfalfa while we tack up, this neutralises stomach acids to help prevent ulcers.

For pastures should do soil testing to see minerals in soil, forages can only provide the minerals they take up from the soil.

  • @sweetpeasandyarrowaranchdi8327

We raise cattle and grow alfalfa. We have been feeding our Mama's pure alfalfa and pasture, with salt/trace mineral. Always 0 calving problems and healthy babies. In this drought, we had to switch to a grain hay and supplement with protein tubs. Last year was the first time we had health issues and calves getting stuck. And the health issues were due to lack of certain vitamins and minerals. I'm a firm believer in high quality mixes of forage to keep our animals healthy.

EXCELLENT video!! I work for Silver Lining Herbs and we get calls daily from wonderful people who have horses (and dogs!) that are struggling with Metabolic/IR issues. Molasses is a by-product and really only added to enhance the palatability of feed, not to mention that it also feeds the bad bacteria in an existing ulcer or lesion. And, yes, many pelleted feeds and other supplements on the market still contain molasses, so I always encourage folks to become avid label readers! I have fed hygain showtorque for years. I had a horse that colic’d constantly. A rep from hygain which is in Australia, happened to be at my feed store. He gave me some of this feed to try. My horse never colic’d again. It’s all natural, grain free. I feed a very small amount with free choice hay that is a mix of tift 85 and alfalfa. A Free choice salt block and one ounce of Comega oul per day and my horses have never been healthier. A mainly forage diet is the best, but a horses diet is dependent on the region they’re originally from. ie my quarter horse comes from Montana. She now lives in Georgia. Water, grass, weather…it all plays a big part in dietary needs.

So the research I've read indicates that enteroliths in horses are primarily formed in horses on an all alfalfa diet. Changing to a mixed forage diet is one of the suggested solutions. One thing I would be concerned about would be balancing the essential nutrients that are not found in hay.

Thank you so much for this info. I have been thinking about going to a forage diet for my horses but was skeptical. This was very informative and gave me more things to research and try out.

Yes vegetable oils are super high omega 6 which causes inflammation in the body. It saddened me to see someone in my barn feeding that to their horse as a cheap weight gain ‘supplement’.

I just have pleasure horses, but I stopped feeding any grain or senior feed, they have Timothy hay and some alfalfa available all day plus pasture, my mares are 22, and 25, they didn't lose any weight this winter, I do give them 2 ounces of Smart Earth Camelina oil, and have noticed a huge difference with their skin, coats, joints and mood.

I've had horses for 44 years and have always done forage only.

Love this. We all need to do better! My gelding only gets pelleted supplements as our forage and soil within a 3-4 hour radius is all deficient in certain vitamins that can cause neuro issues so its something we need to watch out for

Makes sense. Feed a horse what they've been eating for centuries. A foragers they would pick and choose different types of feed while roaming all day.
