    I love my Fuji XS-10! Autofocus tracking works great with photos. If they added that to the video it would be incredible. Fuji does need to step up their auto focus game. It’s average, but the image quality is excellent. I’m hoping they could match Sony’s autofocus someday.

  • @no2475

    About a year and a half ago I was in the market for my first 'real' camera. Got super close to buying an a6400 that I found at a banger price but I wanted to hold the camera in my hand first before dropping the money. Went to a local store to see if they have any on display and found an a6100. I have to say I was not a fan of the way it looked and felt in person. Bought an X-S10 a few weeks later instead even though it cost me a few hundreds more than the a6400 would have. No regrets, love this camera.
    Ultimately it comes down to what you want out of your camera. The unlimited recording time on the Sony for example is an awesome feature, but I barely ever shoot video so it's not very important to me. I will admit thought I do wish the Fuji had at least comparable face tracking to the Sony. Sometimes it can be a real pain to use.

    When it comes to image quality, it should be mentioned that Sony *still* uses their super weird raw compression on their APS-C cameras that shows artifacts on contrasting edges when shadows and highlights are pushed. This is not just a test chart issue - I have seen it in real life photos I took with Sony cameras, where the edges of tree trunks and pant legs get all pixelated where other raw images might just show a bit of halo-ing.

    • @Kai-P
      @Kai-P 3 роки тому +1

      True, but probably at least as important that they use different ISO standards. Sony ISO 6400 is not the same as Fuji ISO 6400, so comparing it without looking at exposure is always flawed.

    • @problemat1que
      @problemat1que 3 роки тому

      @@Kai-P Lossy compression is lossy compression, no matter what the ISO is. Fujifilm raws are compressed lossless, so you'll never see those artefacts with their bodies.

    • @Kai-P
      @Kai-P 3 роки тому

      @@problemat1que I didn't mean they are related, just that both can be factors of image quality. Btw: Fujifilm has lossless compressed as an option, but also uncompressed and lossy compressed. Not sure how the lossy compares and the space saving is minor, so probably nobody should use it (you probably know, just if someone reads it and wonders).

    I just so happen to be comparing both in 2022 for vlogging/video webinars, years after the A6400 came out (and nearly a year after this original post), as I'm going to be doing 'stable' (mounted) videos and webinars, but also want a camera I can go out and shoot with. I can get a similar A6400 package right now for a few hundred less. Thanks, this is one of the best tech reviews I've seen. I got more out of this than either of these as a single product review... still don't know which to buy though :) I like the A6400's autofocus and unlimited recording as I may be making some videos over 30 minutes- though guess I could just record to my computer with X-S10?

    IBIS really deserves its own category. Having IBIS at this price point is really impressive. And I say that as a former A6400 owner.
    Honestly this is a tough choice. The X-S10 has IBIS and better handling, while the Sony has magic autofocus and weather-sealing. As a left-eyed person I would choose against the rangefinder, but for righties it's a tossup.

    Good video! The one thing that is often forgotten in these reviews are that the Sony don't have a recording limit for video. I am currently looking for a camera to use for travel and as a second body for events. As a camera, I prefer the XS-10, but at times I need my second body to shoot event videos on a tripod, and then the 30 minutes recording limit on the Fuji is a deal breaker. So the a6400 or a6600 are basically the only options even though they feel overpriced for what they deliver in 2021.

      The A6400 will overheat in 10-15 minutes anyway. The X-S10 is known to keep going forever when recording externally, or restarting every 30m. Besides, once the EU tax clause is lifted in july, Fuji will probably just Firmware update the limit away like they always do

When you see simplicity and user care in the logical environment of fujifilm software, you will be miles away from Sony. The only if on the fuji side is when in low light, but if it's stronger only you compare it with Sony's fullframe A7 series.

    I think there should be a category for ease of processing RAWs. I could never get on board with Fuji as my only camera because the X-Trans filter destroys landscapes unless you use a specific work flow and software. Not having access to DxO's Deep Prime alone should be one negative point for Fuji.

      Xtrans is a gimmick. Offers no advantage over bayer, and only disadvantages. Any detail that falls within those 2x2 blocks of green pixels, is basically invisible to the sensor. That's why it does soo poorly on landscape and turns it into mush....it literally can't see the detail. It's the camera equivalent of color blindness.

    UA-cam put this in my suggested list for no apparent reason, but it has been over a year since I saw it before, so I decided to watch it again. In general "it stands up well" over time. I did realize that it was missing some points that I felt were important for video. The Sony Picture Profiles are particularly useful for integrating the a6400 into a Semi-Pro/Pro video environment. This is especially true for people who work with Sony's real video cameras (FX6 and above) but to a lesser extent with other "real video" cameras. Though on the other hand, the Picture Profiles on the a6400 are limited to 8-bit implementations, which makes them less useful than they might be. And that, I think is what you missed for the Fuji. If I remember correctly, it has 10-bit out the HDMI port, which is also a big deal for integrating into a Semi-Pro/Pro environment. And these environments are huge for video. Still photographers can work solo, but in the video world, "successful" Pro work is general done in groups. Anyway, it was fun to see it again. I should add that for 4K video, I now use a Sony a6400, a Lumix G85 and a Sony FDR-AX53.

    Hi, can you please guide me about which camera will be best for capturing makeup shots and portraits, mostly indoors? Fuji XS10 or sony5100 ? I actually want good results but have budget constraint too.

    I think that a Canadian talking about the price of the a6400 and the X-S10 being in the same price category so they shouldn't bring up the A6600 is hilarious (Edit: Mentioned around 6:40). Right now (March 6-2021), the a6600 with the kit lens is technically $50 less than X-S10 with the kit lens. If we are talking about the a6400 with a kit lens it is actually $600 CAD less expensive right now ($1300 CAD vs. $1900 CAD).

      Based on their competition, not overall. Go to the comparison chart in either review's Conclusion page and see which cameras are in the same category (hint: they're in separate categories).

    It should be a win for Sony in terms of lenses. Yes they have a lot of lenses but Fuji lenses are very expensive. I mean example like the Sigma 16mm vs Fuji 16mm both at f1.4, probably same image quality but the Fuji lens is more than double the price.

    I think A6600 vs X-S10 would have been a more interesting comparison, considering the A6600's more comparable grip, and the inclusion of IBIS. Yes they're different prices, but it would have been interesting to see if the A6600 justifies it's price premium.

    • @Vinterloft
      @Vinterloft 3 роки тому +5

      A6600 vs. Fuji X-S10 is basically "pick the one you like more, and will work out cheaper with the lenses you want". For me the X-S10 makes more sense just because it's faster, has no noticeable rolling shutter and never overheats when filming 4K30.

    • @mvhan911

      IBIS in 6600 is in all Test not better that OSS of the kit lens 16-50. It is the least effective IBIS and more disappointing

    The Fuji is a better camera but I would go with the a7c over both for the battle of a small camera, but only if u can find a used one so the price isn't so high.

      This does bring up another point: the A6400 has a full frame upgrade path. I can use my full frame ( 16-35GM, 24-70GM ) lenses on the A6400. I also like the fact that Sony has ( more or less ) standardized it's batteries. My A6400 and A7Rii use the same battery and the A6600 uses the same battery as the newer full frame cameras.

    It feels weird talking about minor differences between APS-C bodies. None of it is enough to switch lens ecosystems. Are Fuji lenses really good enough to call it a tie? My favorite lens is the $400 Sigma 16mm f/1.4, and Fuji's 16mm f/1.4 is $999. I guess I feel like the Fuji is better for non-nerds, but those aren't the people watching DPReview videos 😄
