Bradley I haven't watched one of your videos in over 3 years because I have been so busy!! Glad to see your still doing reviews on pipes and tobacco..... I subscribed again!
Welcome back!
Ahhh, Full Virginia Flake... I was largely an English smoker early on in the hobby, I just couldn't "get" Virginias at the time. Full Virginia Flake was THE Virginia that delivered the breakthrough that turned me into the Virginia fan that I am today.
Many English blends have Virginia in them. Cavendish is usually made from Virginia tobaccos, though I think I’ve heard Burley is used sometimes.
Love Samuel Gawith Full Virginia. It's up there with Perterson's English Blends as personal favourites. Full Virginia has a grassy, malty almost toffee like taste for me. I find that it has a suggestion of fruit cake in the tin. I can also pick up that citrus like flavour, particularly as the bowl smokes down.
I am currently smoking Gawith and Hoggarth's Brown Twist Sweet Rum. I have been pleasantly surprised by the taste and absence of tongue burn for what is classed as a strong tobacco. The twist has an earthy appley nose. For me, I found the twist a pleasant smoke, easy with a slight sweetness.
I bought 1 pound of it a month or two ago. Wasn’t hard at all to buy for me here in California. I got some tins from a few places and 8 oz box. I Love it in a meerschaum. Also for 1 lb almost of squadron leader. Just got 6 tins of Cabbie mix without trying. Lots do not seem to like it but I LOVE it. I really want more Saint James flake and another tin or so of 1792. Really like SG stuff.
BRILLIANT! Revisiting is one of my favorite things you do on this channel. That is truly a "unicorn" blend. Who bought all the S.G. ROPE??? I know yer watchin' this... 😂😂🍀
I have been on the look out for some rope tobacco... It sure aint easy to find.
It's one of my favourites, I still have a jarred tin from 2 years back. I'd be willing to make the statement that it's one of, if not the, most refreshing Virginia blends on the market.
I prefer Mac Baren HH Pure Virginia because it is easier to smoke. You should also check out C&D cellar series. Chenet’s Cake is really good.
I’ve got some on the way, very excited.
This was my first tobacco to smoke 3 years ago, and this is what made me appreciate what a good pipe smoking is. Fantastic stuff and it will always be my regular (that is, if I ever get a chance to buy one😅)
Had my first bowl of this while watching this video! Dried the flake out well and it has to be the smoothest Virginia ive ever had, very good! Thanks for the reviews!
Awesome video Bradley! Wish I could get my hands on some Full Virginia Flake to try it out.
It’s so good. If you get some, try to get at least two tins so you can age one. It is soooo much better if you age it at least a year
I’ve got 3 mason jars full of it. When you see it available jump on it and age it for sure! It’s really good.
@@ChrisSmith-hy7nb lucky man with 3 jars full :-)
@@jayst yep no more than that though. I’m not a tobacco horder like some assholes.
@@ChrisSmith-hy7nb I see some guys with like 20 tins of penzanse and fvf. Save some for the rest of us!!
Thanks for sharing Bradley. This is one I will be trying and reviewing.
Another great video Bradley, really enjoying your work. Thankfully here in the UK this is readily available and definitely one of my favourite smokes. The tin I have open at the moment, the flakes are all broken up! Not a single flake in one piece, I'm hoping that this isn't going to be the norm now Samuel Gawith has amalgamated with Gawith Hogarth. Still a great blend though.
I bought a tin yesterday and it's all flake. Not sure what happened with yours.
Mine was nicely formed into flakes. Maybe just an anomaly?
@@stuffandthingsyoutube this is my favourite blend and I have plenty of it stashed away. It's presentation has always been inconsistent in terms of thickness, and flake size and pieces.
I bought the bulk version when it was available circa 2014-15 and bought 7 tins of it in 2022. There is totally a vast difference in their appearance and aroma
Always happy to buy some Gawith when it is available to me. Current choice is Navy.
Excellent review Bradley. Thanks a lot. Have a great week.
Thanks, you too!
Bradley, you should try the BRIGHT CR FLAKE from Gawith Hoggart! It's incredible.. and REVOR PLUG from Gawith Hoggart
Check out that fab hair parting! Love it dude
Wishing you, your fiancee and family a blessed Christmas.
May the coming year be prosperous for you ...
filled with health, harmony, peace and Joy!
Merry Christmas!
Classic tobacco. Smoked a bowl with you. I think you're spot on with the review in every respect, except that for me Peterson Flake wins by a smidge - my favourite flake of all in fact. Cheers, J.
You do have to pay double the price but my local shop always seems to have tins available!
Mac Baren's HH Pure Virginia is my favorite pure Virginia blend. For those that have smoked both, how do they compare? Being in the U.S. I'm not likely to find any Samuel Gawith blends, but would be nice to know anyway. 😉
I have both, and while Mac HH is good, it doesn’t bring as much to the table in my opinion as the richer darker Samuel Gawith FVF. I actually prefer Orlik Golden Sliced (technically a vapr) and Capstan Blue (Orig navy cut flake) over Mac Baren HH Pure Va as well...so be sure to check those out and compare!
@@Kevin-vr4vz Thanks! Yeah my wish for HH Virginia would be a bit more richness, but it is so nice otherwise, I really like it. Just a really good straight Virginia flavor, imo. Orlik's Golden Slices is another favorite of mine, but much brighter to my tastes. It has been awhile since I smoked any Capstan blends, I remember what I smoked as being very good, but frankly my memory is a bit hazy so I need to try Capstan Blue in particular to remind my taste-bud memory of what I might be missing. And, hopefully Gawith's blends will start showing up so I can get that treat as well.
Tobaccopipes.com had some Samuel Gawith blends as of yesterday they still had Squadron Leader available. I was able to get 4 tins. Also had some others available.
My good friend Bradley... I have added it to my list.
I had the opportunity (very lucky) to buy 250gr of this tobacco, and St. James Flake too, from Tobaccopipes last october. Man!!! this is a really good stuff. I am completely sure, that this tobacco will be matured in a mason jar for a long time. This will be my "precious"
I can’t get this stuff to smoke well…Actually I really struggle to get it ignited at all. Seems nearly flame retardant even when really dried out.
Let me join the chorus of people praising the quality of the video, now that you have the new camera. The video quality before seemed just fine, but man, it's great now, and much nicer to watch.
That's really great to hear!
Short and sweet revisited. I have an unopened tin of dunhill flake from 2015 stuck in the attic. Maybe time to crack it. Or a few more years maybe?
5 years is plenty in my opinion. Longer aging of Virginias tends towards hot air I think
No better time than the present.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Crack it, stuff it, light it, enjoy it.
Merry Christmas.
Hello how are you?
You have not contemplated the option of reviewing any lakeland tobacco (Gawith hoggarth's floral aromatic style). I know they are not your style, but would it be interesting to hear your opinion about it?
Thanks!
You need to try Peterson signature flake
Ahhh..My all time favorite. I have 3 tins put away.
Trust me ! This like many other tobaccos did change. They use to be better. Something changed in the last 3 years. Even SG full Virginia flake is different. It use to be much better.
@ Vintage pipes nightmares . You are absolutely right about the change of FVF. They even changed the design on the tin. probably because the tobacco has changed so much !
Great video man! I just made my first video last night
This FVF is my only friend...
It looks like Erinmore flake if you can make a review for it
I need to smoke this one with a big ‘ol filter. It’s a nic bomb 💣 🤢
Back tracking.
