The criticality alarm, as I understand it, essentially means: run very fast and dont stop, get away as fast as possible. Ionizing radiation release has occurred. Ironic that the scariest sounding one is not this, but the Sellafield Emergency alarm, but perhaps there are good reasons for that.

I suspect it's designed to carry over a long distance: a low pitched droning sound will travel further than a high pitched one.

@@piratecaribou4337 when a large enough quantity of radioactive material accumulates, it will "go critical", meaning vast amounts of gamma radiation will be given off. Walls are no protection, it will go right through most materials, and has caused deaths in the past. So you need to GTFO and hope to god you don't run past the area where it occurred on the way out.
An odd thing about this alarm - it was tested monthly, so we were all used to the sound, but it went off one day unexpectedly. It took me a good few seconds before I realised which alarm it actually was, lol!

criticality is when the chain reaction of the nuclear power somehow reached the dangerous point. The point where the reaction is self sustaining and is very harmful. Its the reaction they look for in nuclear bombs

@@imnotaracistokayit’s ironic that the emergency alarm is scarier than the criticality alarm, since when you hear the criticality alarm it just means to stop what you’re doing and run out of the building because there is a lethal amount of ionizing radiation in the area.

I've been trying to figure out the emergency alarm on the guitar. It appears to be a C# minor that bends down into either a C major or a C augmented (it kind of sounds like the top note just goes "flat" to sound spooky). Going down to a C augmented would be like a i-V (minor 1 to major five) cadence, especially if you added the G# in underneath (It's like a i-V cadence that you would get from a melodic minor). It's honestly one of "THE" neoclassical metal chord progressions, so it's a good fit for an alarm that indicates a nuclear emergency that will affect offsite citizens...

I haven’t done the research to know but my guess is, this was long before the modern internet and thus, youtube etc. For people visiting the site, be they contractors or tourists or what have you, it was necessary for them to be able to hear these sounds ahead of time.

I wad talking to my son recently about Sellafield and where I went afterwards (Magnox) and he asked how could I work around so much stuff that could so easily kill you. I laughed and told him that there were 5 types of people in that place; the mad, the nihilist, the money guy, the gives no fu*ks and the old timer, who doesn't give a damn about meeting his end in a radiological disaster. They were the ones I'm sure would end up dropping a rollie into a flammable sump and sending us into orbit 🤣
