In 2017 ford put the port injection back in the 2.7 to fix the valve problem. Timed intermediate injection to keep the valves clean. A lot of oil pans leak including mine. Good vid.
The 2018 F-150 2.7L (2nd generation) has Port Fuel Injection and Direct Fuel Injection with the Port Fuel Injectors spraying primary keeping the underside of the valves clean, the carbon buildup is not a problem with the 2018 2.7L, the Direct Fuel Injectors only spray when the engine is under full throttle.
After owning a '15 2.7 for 55k+ trouble free miles, I jumped into a 2018 for 3 main reasons, port/direct injection, the 10 speed and the integrated Android Auto/Apple Carplay. The 15 was a great truck and I loved it, but having owned DI cars for over a decade, I'm well aware of their carbon build-up issues. Looking forward to many happy miles with the new limo, I mean truck.
The washing part is a result of the quality of gas , a higher quality gas will clean better as opposed to "cheaper" gas. I understand your point though. And regardless of port and direct Injection there will always be some buildup however small over time, But regular maintenance, clean oils, and "good" gas can solve most of these problems.
John R. Fuel grade and octane ratings have nothing to do with keeping the valves cleaned. On a direct injection the fuel is never sprayed onto the intake valve. Without an oil catch can, on especially a turbocharged 164CI engine. You will have significant blow by. What comes out the PCV and back into the intake manifold onto the intake valves has nothing to do with fuel, it’s oil. Blow by. Grade of fuel has nothing to do with it.
Because of the direct injection, you really should install an oil separator or " catch can" to keep all the blowby gunk from getting back into your 2.7. Very easy to install, not too expensive. May save you from having trouble down the road, especially if you plan on keeping it for awhile. I have one on my 3.5. Plenty of UA-cam videos on the subject as well as installment tutorials.
I have a "catch can" on my 2.7 for that reason as well. Although, it doesn't catch very much in 7.5k miles when I check it, which is when I change my oil filter. I also use StabL gas treatment every time I fill up to help avoid a lot of damage ethanol causes to the intake, valves, etc., and Amsoil fuel treatment every 7.5k miles as well. Praying that it all pays off.

I have a 2016 XLT with the 2.7L. This engine is great, it's crazy fast off the line. I have 115K and runs like new. Only issue I had was the common oil pan seal leak at 30K. But it was under warranty. Start-stop is annoying I always shut it off. At least you get a beefed up started and battery to support start-stop.
185k miles on my 2015 2.7L EB no issues, no warranty claims. I drive her hard too! She's a BEAST! I think Ford finally found a replacement for the 'ol reliable 289 c.i.d, just faster! lol!

Still has a little lag but definitely better than a lot of turbos ive drivin. Twin turbos are water cooled also. I like the fact that it was purposely engineered and built for twin turbos vs an adapted setup. I do use the start stop as it comes. It disables during towing and I think 4 wheel drive. Cool video bro.
Another way to disable it is just keep your climate control system to defrost only, it will disable the system without hitting the button every start up
Under the dash there is a module for trailer lights and if you unplug the bottom connector autostart stop is permanently disabled till you plug it back in and zero codes and back up camera still works vs plugging in a tester to the rear of the truck
Man! You are pretty smart! Great video! Thank you!!!! I just bought a 2018 f-150 2.7 eco boost supercrew stx. Gonna tow a 21’ toy hauler with a total of 8,700 lbs.... hopefully take videos of the journey and share with you.
@@terry92ish Here is a good IMO article explaining what we are right now. vehq.com/size-travel-trailer-f-150-pull/ GCVW is the key legal factor we are talking about, the weight of a loaded truck and the trailer. In other words, what the unit weighs if pulled onto a truck scale in total. There are numbers on the pillar at the driver's door that lets you know your limits. I don't dispute one bit my 2.7 can pull 8,000# but not legally. There are many factors involved but an F150 has its legal design limitations. Please read the article I provided above. Heaven forbid you were in an accident and way out of your weight legal limits you could be deemed at fault even if not at fault for this reason. Your insurance may not cover you and you could be in big unprotected financial legal territory. It is the weight listed on the door and perhaps tongue of the trailer combined that matter. Then if weighed and you are way over you are SOoL. There is that gray area of a chance encounter with an officer and actually being weighed but if the numbers are out of legal range you can be cited.
The ultra lightweight self lubing plastic oil pan is great as well. The GDi is great because it enables the PCV valve mist to fully coat the intake valve. The oil filter is where???????? The start stop will only fail at stop lights when the starter gives up so no worries about it not starting in the driveway.
"most wear occurs when the engine is cold" is only true if you run the motor aggressively before the engine is warmed up, otherwise it's well established that most wear occurs at maximum load (high rpm)
Just bought a new 2018 f-150 sport with a 2.7. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this engine is. I was going to get the 5.0 but I test drove it and I was sold. On the 2.7
steven ford .. so I was going to do the same thing you did. I drove the 2.7 and I was happy. Very strong engine and didnt sound nearly as bad as people said it does. HOWEVER, that was all completely out the window as me and my salesman smiled while I test drove the 3rd and final truck which was a V8.
I have a 2015 2.7 it is a very nice engine and quick pick up with the twin turbo. The only problem I had is with the engine light. I don’t know what is the evaporative emission system switching valve. Do you know what this is?
I have the 2.7 twin turbo and get around 27 on the interstate @ 70 mph on regular gas. My truck is the extended cab 2 wheel drive and I bought it for the mileage..Around town I average 19-23 mpg..I also wish the auto start/stop could be disabled especially in town driving..It is very quick on the restart , but I fear that restart when pulling across a busy intersection..My truck is only the XL model, but is the most comfortable riding vehicle (car or truck) that I have ever driven..I have many low back problems and I can handle an all day drive, only stopping for fuel..Did I say how quick this truck is..!!
Yes that will work, but it makes the lines on your backup camera disappear (assuming you have a backup camera). I just gotten into the habit of hitting the button and manually turning it off.
Just have your climate control setting set to defroster only. It Will disable the auto stop start without hitting the button every start up, plus it does a good job keeping the car to the temp you want
Looking for someone who knows about the 2016 2.7 ecoboost. My question is my radio wont come on or back up camera fuses are fine . Someone said it might have went into a deep sleep mode. Shawn have you ever heard of that . Any advice would help.
Hello. DS , I have a 2018 F-150 eco-boost 2.7l. I saw Kalifornia on the carmax report or what ever it is called for information on your truck. i bought it used in Ga. Is there anything like emissions equipment that is different from the 49 state vehicle. I worked on Harley's in the early 1990's and they had a lower profile cam for their california models according to our instructors. This is where I get the difference idea from. I hear a knowledgeable guy about these trucks. Oh, I don't or haven't gotten a repair manual or looked it up in my owners manual yet. Thanks.
2015 f150, bought onw of the first ones in my area at the end of 2014. 112,000 + on mine, runs and tows great. had a small oil leak at 4k miles from the oil supply line to the turbo. something with the sealant used. it didnt leak enough to be noticable on the dip stick. quick fix with no issues since. my auto start/stop aux pump went bad. $900 to replace. i dont know if they need replaced though because if you shut off the feature on the dash it doesnt work obviously. from my understanding the only purpose for that pump is to keep fluid pumping in the transmission while youre stopped at a red light and the truck is off. its so you dont get a hard shift right away. otherwise i dont know what would happend if you said screw it and never replaced it? the feature doesnt work when that pump goes out either. it kicks the truck back on and throws a wrench on the dash. mine is still fairly new, i had the money, so i had it replaced. otherwise its been good. it tows my 5300 lbs dry weight camper. acidentlly went past my GCVWR hauling concrete. pulled it just fine. i think its a great all around engine. sure it sucks the gas when towing, but its nice that i can also unhook and get 20-23 mpg.
Cooled exhaust manifolds mean less energy for the turbos. Integrated exhaust manifolds mean you can't do anything about the sound nor can you equalize the pulses. So much for me wanting to use this engine in a project car.
It is a great little engine. Just change the oil more frequently 3500 miles. Amsoil works great. Mobil 1 extended performance is fine if you can't get a hold of Amsoil. Don't be lazy and use Mobil 1 Annual Protection. Better to change for the turbos sake and to remove moisture for those who don't want to run catch can.
I Use Rotella Full Synthetic 5w-40 since it’s rated for the high internal temperatures of a modern Turbo-diesel engine. It has a much higher flash point than pretty much any other synthetic, the exception being Amsoil. I used to run that Amsoil 15w40 in everything. My 7.3L powerstroke, my motorcycle, my lawn mower..it’s great stuff.
@@LilPres0 Because even in the manual they are trying to sell you a sub-par product at an above premium price. Its just like replacement parts, the dealer sells an OEM part at triple the price of an aftermarket replacement which is usually twice the quality of the OEM....
I would always recommend letting it warm for a few minutes instead of just turning the key and going so your oil can get to the right places to lubricate properly
How is the highway mileage on the 2.7? Im dying to lease one. The 2019 is the most beautiful truck Ford has built. My 80 mile a day commute might mean a grizzly gas bill though. Great video!
Wouldn't cooling your exhaust cause a decrease in the exhaust velocity to spin a turbo ... In case u go big turbo.... And thinner cylinder wall might be more prone to blown head gasket when increasing boost???......
@@DS-TRUCKS ive been messing with 4 bangers for a few years... And i feel like i am ready to go up to a v6 or v8... I been looking at chevy v8 because there r plenty in the junk yard incase i blow one i can get one cheap. i just saw ur video about the twinn turbo v6..... I was just wondering how capable r those ford v6 when going for 700 to 900 hp......... Do you know any additional information on how must power the internals can hold?? Ive read the cylinders and part of the block has a diesel architecture but with thin walls how much boost still it hold until u blow the head gasket???
The newer models both have GDI as well as PFI due to the fact that older ecoboost were having really bad carbon issues on the intake manifolds " Catch Can" is a must on all F-150's. If I were to buy a new F-150, I would chose/still prefer the natural Aspirated V6/V8..
I tested both the 5.0 and the 2.7 on the day I drove off the lot with mine.. and you might call me crazy but the 2.7 just felt a lil quicker.. less lag and a quicker response.. i love my 2.7..
@@albania2107 The 2.7 makes its power at a lower rpm than the 5.0 is why twin turbo and the technology make it responsive at a low rpm the 5.0 needs high rpm aka flooring it to feel its raw power.. so the 2.7 is for sure the funner engine to drive
starter was stated to be 3 times that of a normal one, no issues. you can disable it multiple ways, switch, a trailer plug for always off, 4x4... too cold, high power draw like high heat, heated seats will keep engine on, very very light braking will keep it from shutting off. You dont notice it really.
The integration of the turbo/cylinder heads has nothing to do with it heating up quicker. Your oil cooler exchanges heat with the main coolant system which will heat up the engine oil much quicker. The design of the head is cheaper more compact. The exhaust temps are kept cooler under boost which is easier on the cats, exhaust valves and turbo seals/bearings. The DI system instead of injecting the fuel on the intake stroke it’s injected a few milliseconds Before the piston hits TDC directly in the cylinder. This has a immediate cooling effect on cylinder temps as well as allows for a leaner burn. This combined with low ignition timing allows you to run 87 octane. Knock sensors will allow for more timing if you choose to put premium in it. Under boost your AFR is what’s typical of a NA engine. You then have Port injection so smooth the engine out on cold starts and keep the intake valves clean. The CGI block is the same material as is used in their diesels for as you mentioned strength. I apologize if it sounds like I’m talking down to you that’s the opposite of my intent.
Nice video man. Appreciate u sharing details. I watched because I wanted to learn about the engine since u hear it may be in the new Bronco. It’s been a couple years since u made this video. How did the engine hold up over the years???
Great video, appreciate the tips on the 2.7. I have a 16 Edge with the same engine, have 85,000 km on mine already and haven’t had a problem except I noticed the coolant level has gone down a bit. Not sure if that’s anything to be concerned about, somebody told me that the turbos might leak, Don’t know if that’s true. It’s cool that you work for Ford, it’s been great to see them prove the eco-boost with the GT winningThe Rolex at Daytona last weekend and Lemans last year obviously. Great power from these engines.
The Ford Edge with 2.7 could have the coolant intrusion issue if you are losing it, I know this was an old response but 15-17’s had it where coolant pretty much is slowly going into cylinders. Nicely designed sporty and comfortable vehicles but that makes me nervous. When that problem gets bad enough there goes the motor.
Lol! there is no such thing as trouble free, the sad part about it is many dealers are now saying change oil every 10,000 miles! that is so wrong, its a recipe for disaster! i say change oil every 5,000 miles if your using synthetics and 3,000 miles on conventional oil, especially on Turbo vehicles. As Scotty Kilmer would say "oil is cheap Engine is Expensive" Never follow the dealer oil change interval recommended, even if you own a toyota..
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. I expect to purchase a new truck this summer or fall and the F150 with the 2.7 is currently where I'm leaning. Quick question though. My commute is 5 miles one way to work would this be a problem with the 2.7? My last vehicle I have only put 60,000 miles on in 9 plus years. Thx.
Abraham Garcia canned tunes are barely better than stock. I would get some custom tunes. SSi has tow tunes, mud/snow tunes, street/performance tunes, and race tunes. All with octane to match your area.
Well you get Max mileage and power out of an EcoBoost to be around 93. The engineered on my way. Or you can be like me. You run a tombs of your stuck running 93 which is better in the end
bobby orton If you’re trying to warm by idling it will take substantially longer and actually increase wear. A mile or two at moderate acceleration and speed will bring temps up to where they need to be. The quickest warming fluid is the coolant which also has the largest heat exchanger. This is why your engine oil and trans oil have heat exchangers coupled with the engine coolant.
Thanks for the video Sean- I had no idea my truck had water cooled internal manifolds. I like the fuel efficiency of this engine its awesome but its not near the beast my 5.7 Hemi was

My son just got a 2.7. Didn't know all of this. Thanks!
Great video. I have a 2017 Fusion Sport and it has this same exact 2.7L TT engine. This thing absolutely hauls ass lol I love it. 380 lb ft of tourque in a family sedan. I mean why not? Lol
Bro I just got my 2017 Lariat 2.7 502A (Pack) and just found out about the sport mode and all that stuff. Only had it for about 9 weeks now and man I am surprised on how this truck responds, way better than my 2001 F150 of course, drove a 2015 Tundra and wasn't all that happy with it, was eager to get back into the 2001 version, now that I have my dream truck I'm trying to learn from everyone what it can do and what I shouldn't do. Your videos help me out a bit and I would like to say Thank you for the knowledge my guy, much appreciated. 🙏🏿😇
Thanks!
On my 2016 XLT the only trouble I had was fuel pump went out driving on the highway with only 48003 miles on it. Kind of nerved me
185k miles on my 2015 2.7L EB no issues, no warranty claims. I drive her hard too! She's a BEAST! I think Ford finally found a replacement for the 'ol reliable 289 c.i.d, just faster! lol!
You got a catch can installed?
@@michaelH0000 Definitely! Use ethanol stabilizer every time I fill up and amsoil fuel treatment every 7.5k miles.

Man great video!!! I have a 2015 2.7 f150 xl ecoboost...all original parts minus a transmission rebuild at 200k same water pump thermostat, belt alternator fuel pump ..only changing out sensors ...im at 300,000 miles ..almost unheard of lol .I need to write the ford company and see if any other 2.7s are still going strong ..built FORD tough 💪
Love your video BRO! Thanks for sharing this with us F-150 Ecobeast owners/enthusiasts
Man! You are pretty smart! Great video! Thank you!!!! I just bought a 2018 f-150 2.7 eco boost supercrew stx. Gonna tow a 21’ toy hauler with a total of 8,700 lbs.... hopefully take videos of the journey and share with you.
I am sure you can do it but should you?
@@larrybe2900 if it can’t pull 8,000 then why have it the 3.5 are rated at like 12,000 I think maybe a lil more or less what are the 2.7s rated at ?
@@terry92ish
Here is a good IMO article explaining what we are right now.
vehq.com/size-travel-trailer-f-150-pull/
GCVW is the key legal factor we are talking about, the weight of a loaded truck and the trailer.
There is that gray area of a chance encounter with an officer and actually being weighed but if the numbers are out of legal range you can be cited.
just picked up a 2017 F150 XLT 2.7L ecoboost. Couldn't pass up the deal with the way pre owned prices are looking😳
I hear nothing but good things about the 2.7 Ecoboost :)
They are great engines!
Good point.
Great video man. A lot of detail I didn’t know about the 2.7 architecture.
I just got a 2020 2.7...good to know these sort of random facts! Lol. My coolant is bright lime green though. Looks like they’ve changed it again lol.
This is actually the first generation 2.7 l EcoBoost. The one that's going to be in the bronco is a little bit better.
Thank you very much..I do have the Tow package..
Tow haul mode doesn't disable this ?
The filler is beside the engine, smart, easy to replace fillers
Looking for someone who knows about the 2016 2.7 ecoboost. My question is my radio wont come on or back up camera fuses are fine . Someone said it might have went into a deep sleep mode. Shawn have you ever heard of that . Any advice would help.
Excellent Job. Thank you for your knowledge.
Thanks for watching.
Great video! Have you heard of any issues with the lifters from that start stop? Thank you.
The grille closes to help warm up the engine too.
Very informative, Sean, thanks for posting this!
Great video dude this helped me decide on buying mine
I’m glad they accounted for everything but the carbon buildup on the valves.
sealtite87 they did
It has 2 injectors per cylinder. So they start up with non direct injection and run at set intervals, so yes they did fix the carbon valve issue

Nice video sir! Very informative! Keep up the incredible job!👍
Cooled exhaust manifolds mean less energy for the turbos. Integrated exhaust manifolds mean you can't do anything about the sound nor can you equalize the pulses.
So much for me wanting to use this engine in a project car.
Regardless of octane they cool?
Hey nice video, got any info on intake valve gunk due to direct injection in these 2.7s?? Thks.
You would think that the salesman would tell you some of this stuff to try to entice you to purchase the truck. Good video Sean!
Mark Gennaro I know!... there's a lot of information on his little engine! I could do a whole nother video!
Do it! I'll be watching for sure. Of course you now have a 3.5 EB, so I guess that ain't happening...lol
CGI is used on locomotive and newer diesel engines.
Looking forward to this in the new Bronco when it arrives. Anyone installing a catch can in it?
What is a catch can?
@@jasonroman578 it’s a can that catches the oil from the turbos/intake to eliminate carbon build up
You don't need it on this engine because it has port fuel injection as well.
I like Mobile One. I dont know much about Amsoil... im going to look into it...
eddielt1sl I use fully synthetic pennzoil for my 2.7tt
I Use Rotella Full Synthetic 5w-40 since it’s rated for the high internal temperatures of a modern Turbo-diesel engine. It has a much higher flash point than pretty much any other synthetic, the exception being Amsoil. I used to run that Amsoil 15w40 in everything. My 7.3L powerstroke, my motorcycle, my lawn mower..it’s great stuff.
Why would anyone consider something other than what the manual recommends? Stop listening to your TV commercials and buy motorcraft for your ford!
@@LilPres0 Because even in the manual they are trying to sell you a sub-par product at an above premium price. Its just like replacement parts, the dealer sells an OEM part at triple the price of an aftermarket replacement which is usually twice the quality of the OEM....
I like to watch your 2.7 reviews, if I did not already have a 2018 gen2 , 3.5 I would buy one
Did the fix the plasma problem with the 5.0 ? Or does it still burn oil like a diesel?
Idk. 🤔
Does this engine need to be warmed up a couple minutes before driving? Maybe because it has turbos
Mpg is really good on it.
Wouldn't cooling your exhaust cause a decrease in the exhaust velocity to spin a turbo ... In case u go big turbo.... And thinner cylinder wall might be more prone to blown head gasket when increasing boost???......
That's a good question !

Thanks for your info I have the 3.5 eco
The newer models both have GDI as well as PFI due to the fact that older ecoboost were having really bad carbon issues on the intake manifolds " Catch Can" is a must on all F-150's.

Its pretty amazing. My buddy has one and keeps up with my Cummins no problem

Same engine thats in the new 2021 Bronco?
Yes but the second generation.
One note, on the 2 7 your engine block is cast iron composite block, not aluminum. The 6 cylinder non aspirated engine has the aluminum block.
Same block in some of the diesels
Cool features Blue Smoke on cold start
Lol maybe on yours.
Anyone had issues with start/stop ? Wondered about the toll it takes on the starter.
Tony Beaman I haven't heard of any issues with start-stop... But I know they put a heavy duty starter on vehicles equipped with it...
starter was stated to be 3 times that of a normal one, no issues. you can disable it multiple ways, switch, a trailer plug for always off, 4x4... too cold, high power draw like high heat, heated seats will keep engine on, very very light braking will keep it from shutting off. You dont notice it really.
I read that the starter was tested to 220,000 cycles. And auto start only starts a warm engine.
Gamer007 - also changing driving modes to either “Sport” or “Tow/Haul” will will disable the start/stop feature.
Make sure u pick up a oil separator canister so u won’t destroy ur engine. U will be amazed at how much oil it collects.
I love my 2.7.Good low end torque.
💯
Good video man please keep us updated on saving my money I really want a new f150 with that engine so i hope it does well

Nice video man. Appreciate u sharing details. I watched because I wanted to learn about the engine since u hear it may be in the new Bronco. It’s been a couple years since u made this video. How did the engine hold up over the years???
Good. No issues and tons of power.
Thanks for watching!
I don't agree with the idea that you can't fit turbos on a manifold. The 3.5l ecoboost has manifolds
Good info! Where did you get this info from?
I do research on Google! It's amazing how much information there is on these engines that.. it's like studying for a test!
you got the engine and the truck color that i want but i still wonder how many miles would be trouble free...
Lol! there is no such thing as trouble free, the sad part about it is many dealers are now saying change oil every 10,000 miles! that is so wrong, its a recipe for disaster! i say change oil every 5,000 miles if your using synthetics and 3,000 miles on conventional oil, especially on Turbo vehicles. As Scotty Kilmer would say "oil is cheap Engine is Expensive" Never follow the dealer oil change interval recommended, even if you own a toyota..
Cool video brother. Good info and stuff
Thx.
Shouldn't be an issue, if it's cold out just let it warm up for a few minutes.

I don’t get why people hate f150’s and Ford in general 😩
I run 91 every fill up is that ok?
Should be alright
Real world mileage for me is 24 hwy, 18 city on 93 tune. Pretty good for a 5200lb SCAB 4x4

Cool thanks, I have a canned tune from SCT right now. I get about 20 on highway but I have 33s Wrangled Duratrac tires
Abraham Garcia canned tunes are barely better than stock. I would get some custom tunes. SSi has tow tunes, mud/snow tunes, street/performance tunes, and race tunes. All with octane to match your area.
Awesome, thanks!
Can you do a video about cleaning the MAF sensors
😬 I don't know anything about the mess air flow sensor!
EcoBoost’s don’t use mass air flow sensors they’re a speed density system based on inlet temp and manifold pressure.

Where your hair shop at I need a haircut lol
Mine takes forever to warm up in ny 2018 2.7 EcoBoost
bobby orton If you’re trying to warm by idling it will take substantially longer and actually increase wear. A mile or two at moderate acceleration and speed will bring temps up to where they need to be. The quickest warming fluid is the coolant which also has the largest heat exchanger. This is why your engine oil and trans oil have heat exchangers coupled with the engine coolant.
I wait about 30seconds to a min then the rpm drop down and I start driving but I go easy until she’s warmed up
