Ironically I watched this while I was at work. I am grateful every day I found a formula that works for me. I work seasonally so the end and start dates give so much freedom to travel. I've had some of my most youthful years to go off into jungles and bounce around on chicken buses all over the world. Freedom can come in so many forms. My question to you, just out of interest: Are you dating/marrying a man, who is also just working part-time? Because this whole topic seems very onesided sometimes. Statistics show that many many women work part-time anyways, even without children. In my country (first world western/european) the news published very recent studies showing that around 50% of part-time working women do not have children or have old enough "children" that they are effectively no caregiver anymore. This caused a slight uproar because the feminist narrative is always about equal pay, women in the workforce, women and wealth etc. But this clearly showed that even in such a developed, free country even the most educated women tend to go for more "work life balance". I am ALL FOR THIS, as a man myself i will reduce my full time work next year to just half time or even less (i saved a lot of money for this). But the double standards make a lot of people kind of angry. 1. Feminism always crying about society/work/carreers, 2. Women simply going for part time if they want to, because money is no factor to consider for them when dating. As a man, if you are broke/low status/low "purpose", dating gets a lot lot harder. So yeah, this is my problem with this whole topic.

Second, because there is no pay gap, I earned a very high income working full-time for over 25 years (even when I had a newborn baby when I was a military officer). This financial comfort allowed me to recently cut back to part time (3 days a week) while still earning a 6-figure income and having an actual work / life balance for the first time in my working life. My most recent ex-husband worked and is still working part time earning a 6-figure income. Since I am not broke, I don't want a man who is broke. I don't do double standards.

Hey Stephen, is the second of your video that I watch, I have 64, and now "Retired" and working a part time. I don't pay much attention. to young people's post, but you get me so impressed. Like your analysis of the historical circumstances of hierarchy by the age, and the analysis of the chains that hold most of the people in the actual civilization.
I have a little bit different prospective on it. You’re only free if you come from a place where you had to fight for your freedom. Without that experience to condition you, you don’t appreciate that freedom, the same way you don’t appreciate free time if you have too much of it. People born into rich families tend to have some of the highest rates of depression because they don’t have the experience of coming from a place of not having freedom and achieving it, or at least appreciating what little free time you have. And they sure as hell don’t get to experience achievement and upward mobility, which can be extremely fulfilling for a lot of people. Things actually need to be this way or I think rates of depression would sky rocket even higher than they already are. What’s actually happening is community and family is breaking down, so people have very little meaning or purpose to actually work towards or work for.
There's always some mouse willing to scrabble for a tiny bit of cheese. That makes it impossible to force the controllers to do their own dirty work. Lots of mice willing to get their hands dirty for a tiny bit of power.
I repair pianos and harps. And because I want people to call me when they need help, I learnt the job by being a nomad for 12 years and working in tons of different workshops of Europe. The hardest part is to know what you want to be. But one thing for sure, own your life.

But I would like you to do the thought exercise of designing a society… And thinking 50 years down the road… And see if you could get away without having property tax… Unless you collect your revenue from sales tax… Because you’ve got to keep the street lights on in the streets plowed… Can you let people build anything they want? On their own property… Maybe… What about health, safety and welfare…?

Absolutely workers are not free. When I was still a barber people regarded me as their rent-a-slave. People would make comments such as “why weren’t you here Sunday I had to go to Best Cuts and they ruined my hair” or “are you any good at cutting hair” or “I come here because so far you’ve always been in when I want a haircut”. I got assaulted once by a guy with a goatee who ordered a shave then got pissed off when I shaved him clean-shaven since of course he hadn’t ordered a beard trim. I later told him he needed to know that I was armed when he assaulted me because I was convinced that I had to be prepared to shoot one of the customers eventuall and that furthermore if he ever came back I was phoning his plates into the Cleveland police department with whom I’d already filed an assault report. Finally when I got old enough to retire I said screw it and closed the shop down. For one thing the customers of the elderly part time barber all acted like I couldn’t cut hair even though their wives preferred my haircuts to the old Greek’s when he was on vacation back to his ancient house in the Greek islands during the summer. The best part was the annoying Greek guy had to go find another shop to work at part time because he didn’t have the balls to buy the shop for himself. But at least as a barber you can tell people to go fuck themselves if you don’t want them to come back which of course I absolutely did on several occasions and most especially to annoying housewives who couldn’t control their little brats. If you’re dealing with the public you’re dealing with assholes.
I also cut my own hair giving myself a shadow fade with the Oster interchangeable blades #1 through #2 for the very top. But then I was a barber for 20 years. I see lots of new barber shops around though. Barber shops are among the cheapest businesses if you wanted to start your own. But you’ve got to pay for your year long apprenticeship at the barber college, which probably runs $10,000 today. @@richardscathouse
I feel in addition to your points another loss of the drive to work comes from the pay you receive isn’t meeting your cost of living needs, this degrading the incentive. Many companies make millions or billions at the expense of hard working employees only to receive peanuts while they make large salaries at the top.
Good video! Most people only look at equality of outcome and not equality of opportunity. You did a good job explaining how society as whole has increased in the hierarchy. Yes, there’s less equality but that’s at a cost of increasing everyone’s quality of life, life expectancy etc… As you mentioned modern day humans have a better quality of life than kings just a century ago. This conversation could get very political, philosophy etc… I like how you didn’t go there and stuck to facts. I think in a grand scale the different “ways of playing the game” have a trade off. More equality = less opportunity for change and vice versa, more opportunity = more inequality. One can argue that opportunity is a type of freedom. We may be modern day slaves to the working class but we have an opportunity to change classes. Ancient Roman slaves had no chance of having any other life than that of a slave. The western world may have the most inequality but it has provided the opportunity and successfully pulled more people out of poverty than anywhere else in the world. That’s something to celebrate although it is far from perfect, at least opportunities exist.

An American minimum wage worker is still not the same thing as someone living in the slums of Global South without food, electricity and access to the same opportunities (such as online payment methods) as the American minimum wage worker.
I am a gamer myself but rarely play multiplayer or online games, I had no idea about the concept of Meta game up until recently and your video reafirmed that notion for me. In simple terms, there are ways that have been useful to some, may be useful to others. Maybe the conversation is not 100% about social mobility anymore but in a deeper sense understanding more inidvidual wealth, and become freer if possible.
I believe using a debt based, fiat currency + central bank increasingly widens the gap between the rich and everyone else. Those closest to the government printer can borrow tons of money at incredibly cheap rates in order to buy up assets, resulting in asset price appreciation.

We have recent examples of hunter gatherer societies that were not so hierarchical. Most native American civilizations were pretty equal and non hierarchichal. And this is pretty recent. There are also others like the eskimos. To say that all civilizations and history contains top down structures with tiny amounts of families with inherated wealth just isn't true. You're making a logical fallacy, going forth from the assumption that the game is a zero-sum game and that there's a *fixed* amount of resources to be *distributed* . Drop that kind of thinking and you will change your life. Those at the top of the hierarchy, or "the winners", as you call them, are the ones who understand that wealth is limitless and is constantly being created. Stop believing the lie of "not enough" and stop struggling for a sliver of the "distribution". Change your mindset and realize that you can create as much wealth and freedom as you can handle.

I think you've misinterpreted what I've said. You're confusing "wealth" (what you define here as money or capital) with "resources". I would hope we can both agree there is a fixed amount of resources on earth, or at the very least that scarcity causes them to have value. We can also both agree that there is an infinite amount of wealth. Wealth is the potentially infinite "points" used to acquire finite/scarce resources. The whole point of my video is to encourage people to think about where they are in the hierarchy structure (what "points" they have and what resources they can access as a result) and determine if they are satisfied with that or not. In many cases, until a person reaches your age or older, a traditional career will not land them in a satisfactory place in the hierarchy, at least for ambitious or curious individuals. So, for those individuals, I suggest an alternative career path. One which transcends the hierarchy much faster through mindset, ambition, effort, and skill. Things which the two of you kindred spirits here have noted as core values to you. Unfortunately, I think me speaking critically of traditional career paths has instilled a clear bias inside of your mind where you interpret me as suggesting work in general is bad or that we are "crying in a corner and calling for your mom" as @dlj1285 has put it (lol). This is so far off base that it's comical. Chill out with the generational stuff and listen to what I'm actually saying.
Part of the reason why GIni has gone up is just that there's way more resources now and that one person can do the labour of several thousand could in generations previously using machines. Equality is a worthless goal, it eventually devolves into billionaires arguing about who has more yachts and supercars. Not working should not be the goal but rather having the option not to, living fulfilled and virtuously. By working you contribute to society, if you get wealthy exploiting the flaws in the system you're just becoming a parasite, how you make money matters. Even so, there’s no direct line between the Byzantine Empire and the USA. If you’ve taken the Soviet Union, for example - with all the immense flaws of that regime - you’d get a Gini of something between 0.23 to 0.29, which could suggest Soviet Socialism was among the absolute best resource distributions in history of humankind. Would communism be the answer, then? If so, why in another video you’d use footage of Stalin when talking about “populist extremists who try to impose an easy solution” instead of Hitler, Trump or Mussolini? And as a final thought: your anecdotal experience is absolutely irrelevant to justify your analysis has a strong foundation, especially being clearly a young person.

Stephen, if you are interested in the question what biological systems must do to keep existing you might find Karl Friston's Free Energy Principle (FEP) interesting. The name stems from thermodynamics of the 19th century , but in fact it is more of an information theoretical principle. I stumbled about it two years ago and it instantly blew my mind. It is extremely general (though very math loaden) and can be applied to all kinds of dynamical systems: living beings, the brain, societies, companies,… Friston, the most cited neuroscientist who ever lived, is working at UCL London. He wrote that when he was young, he wanted to became a blend of Einstein and Sherlock Holmes, and to me he seems to have reached some state like that. Though he introduced the FEP to the public already twenty years ago, it is only now, especially in the last year, that it seems to pop up everywhere (oh, I see there's a new interview with Karl Friston just 21h ago on the Machine Learning Street Talk channel), and I dare to predict this will continue to do so. Absolutely workers are not free. When I was still a barber people regarded me as their rent-a-slave. People would make comments such as “why weren’t you here Sunday I had to go to Best Cuts and they ruined my hair” or “are you any good at cutting hair” or “I come here because so far you’ve always been in when I want a haircut”. I got assaulted once by a guy with a goatee who ordered a shave then got pissed off when I shaved him clean-shaven since of course he hadn’t ordered a beard trim. I later told him he needed to know that I was armed when he assaulted me because I was convinced that I had to be prepared to shoot one of the customers eventuall and that furthermore if he ever came back I was phoning his plates into the Cleveland police department with whom I’d already filed an assault report. Finally when I got old enough to retire I said screw it and closed the shop down. For one thing the customers of the elderly part time barber all acted like I couldn’t cut hair even though their wives preferred my haircuts to the old Greek’s when he was on vacation back to his ancient house in the Greek islands during the summer. The best part was the annoying Greek guy had to go find another shop to work at part time because he didn’t have the balls to buy the shop for himself. But at least as a barber you can tell people to go fuck themselves if you don’t want them to come back which of course I absolutely did on several occasions and most especially to annoying housewives who couldn’t control their little brats. If you’re dealing with the public you’re dealing with assholes.

I also cut my own hair giving myself a shadow fade with the Oster interchangeable blades #1 through #2 for the very top. But then I was a barber for 20 years. I see lots of new barber shops around though. Barber shops are among the cheapest businesses if you wanted to start your own. But you’ve got to pay for your year long apprenticeship at the barber college, which probably runs $10,000 today. @@richardscathouse

I feel in addition to your points another loss of the drive to work comes from the pay you receive isn’t meeting your cost of living needs, this degrading the incentive. Many companies make millions or billions at the expense of hard working employees only to receive peanuts while they make large salaries at the top.
Good video! Most people only look at equality of outcome and not equality of opportunity. You did a good job explaining how society as whole has increased in the hierarchy. Yes, there’s less equality but that’s at a cost of increasing everyone’s quality of life, life expectancy etc… As you mentioned modern day humans have a better quality of life than kings just a century ago.

I think in a grand scale the different “ways of playing the game” have a trade off. More equality = less opportunity for change and vice versa, more opportunity = more inequality. One can argue that opportunity is a type of freedom. We may be modern day slaves to the working class but we have an opportunity to change classes. Ancient Roman slaves had no chance of having any other life than that of a slave. The western world may have the most inequality but it has provided the opportunity and successfully pulled more people out of poverty than anywhere else in the world. That’s something to celebrate although it is far from perfect, at least opportunities exist.

An American minimum wage worker is still not the same thing as someone living in the slums of Global South without food, electricity and access to the same opportunities (such as online payment methods) as the American minimum wage worker.

I am a gamer myself but rarely play multiplayer or online games, I had no idea about the concept of Meta game up until recently and your video reafirmed that notion for me. In simple terms, there are ways that have been useful to some, may be useful to others. Maybe the conversation is not 100% about social mobility anymore but in a deeper sense understanding more inidvidual wealth, and become freer if possible.
I believe using a debt based, fiat currency + central bank increasingly widens the gap between the rich and everyone else. Those closest to the government printer can borrow tons of money at incredibly cheap rates in order to buy up assets, resulting in asset price appreciation.

You're making a logical fallacy, going forth from the assumption that the game is a zero-sum game and that there's a *fixed* amount of resources to be *distributed* . Drop that kind of thinking and you will change your life. Those at the top of the hierarchy, or "the winners", as you call them, are the ones who understand that wealth is limitless and is constantly being created. I think you've misinterpreted what I've said. You're confusing "wealth" (what you define here as money or capital) with "resources". I would hope we can both agree there is a fixed amount of resources on earth, or at the very least that scarcity causes them to have value. We can also both agree that there is an infinite amount of wealth. Wealth is the potentially infinite "points" used to acquire finite/scarce resources.
The whole point of my video is to encourage people to think about where they are in the hierarchy structure (what "points" they have and what resources they can access as a result) and determine if they are satisfied with that or not. In many cases, until a person reaches your age or older, a traditional career will not land them in a satisfactory place in the hierarchy, at least for ambitious or curious individuals. So, for those individuals, I suggest an alternative career path. One which transcends the hierarchy much faster through mindset, ambition, effort, and skill. Things which the two of you kindred spirits here have noted as core values to you.
Unfortunately, I think me speaking critically of traditional career paths has instilled a clear bias inside of your mind where you interpret me as suggesting work in general is bad or that we are "crying in a corner and calling for your mom" as @dlj1285 has put it (lol). This is so far off base that it's comical. Chill out with the generational stuff and listen to what I'm actually saying.
Part of the reason why GIni has gone up is just that there's way more resources now and that one person can do the labour of several thousand could in generations previously using machines.
Equality is a worthless goal, it eventually devolves into billionaires arguing about who has more yachts and supercars.
Not working should not be the goal but rather having the option not to, living fulfilled and virtuously. By working you contribute to society, if you get wealthy exploiting the flaws in the system you're just becoming a parasite, how you make money matters.

Even so, there’s no direct line between the Byzantine Empire and the USA. If you’ve taken the Soviet Union, for example - with all the immense flaws of that regime - you’d get a Gini of something between 0.23 to 0.29, which could suggest Soviet Socialism was among the absolute best resource distributions in history of humankind. Would communism be the answer, then? If so, why in another video you’d use footage of Stalin when talking about “populist extremists who try to impose an easy solution” instead of Hitler, Trump or Mussolini?
And as a final thought: your anecdotal experience is absolutely irrelevant to justify your analysis has a strong foundation, especially being clearly a young person.

Stephen, if you are interested in the question what biological systems must do to keep existing you might find Karl Friston's Free Energy Principle (FEP) interesting. The name stems from thermodynamics of the 19th century , but in fact it is more of an information theoretical principle. I stumbled about it two years ago and it instantly blew my mind. It is extremely general (though very math loaden) and can be applied to all kinds of dynamical systems: living beings, the brain, societies, companies,… Friston, the most cited neuroscientist who ever lived, is working at UCL London. He wrote that when he was young, he wanted to became a blend of Einstein and Sherlock Holmes, and to me he seems to have reached some state like that. Though he introduced the FEP to the public already twenty years ago, it is only now, especially in the last year, that it seems to pop up everywhere (oh, I see there's a new interview with Karl Friston just 21h ago on the Machine Learning Street Talk channel), and I dare to predict this will continue to do so.
