- In this video we are going to photograph one of Norway's most beautiful forest birds: the BLACK GROUSE. Spring here is the most wonderful time for WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY. We attempt to photograph the birds from my TRAGOPAN MONAL camouflage tent with Nikon Cameras and the Nikkor 400mm F4.5
🐺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Black Grouse are birds that hide from sight during most times of the year. They blend into the forest, are shy and seldom seen. But in spring, this is changing. The woods are full of noise, by cranes, woodpeckers, but especially the charismatic sound of the Black Grouse. Already in March the male birds are gathering on the marshes across the country to start showing of their display of feathers and song to the females. Not only do they sing loudly, but there is also hard competition for the best spot of marsh to present yourself. Here the males are clashing in fierce fighting that often end in lost feathers and scars.
On this occasion, which is my last for the season, I was glad to observe three things that I had not seen before. Snow was falling during the morning, making for beautiful lighting conditions. A pair of cranes walked over the lekking ground without scaring the Black Grouse and even mating in front of the hide. The absolute highlight, though in low light, was a female black grouse full of hormones that nearly displayed like a male: tail feathers up and chasing around other females.

Fantastic footage as usual :) I really loved the slo-mo rain/snow and also the fact that you had cranes wandering through your lek! I went to see my first lek last month and it was an amazing experience - definitely going to try and see more next year!!
