One of the most energetic hosts ever.Love it when he says "Right!" when the contestant solves the puzzles be it the game or the Double Play round.Gone but never forgotten.
Bob Clayton always says YES MA'AM OR YES SIR!
Narz knew how to keep it snappy, and get a laugh at the same time.
I remember that I used to be pretty good at Concentration when I watched this as a kid. Watching this now makes me realize how crappy my short-term memory has gotten. I guess I smoked a few too many joints when I was younger too. 😄
Cutie comment within the first minute by Jack Narz regarding the female contestant, along with a totally non-PC (but great) dialog thereafter! Awesome throwback. Thanks.
I MISS the old Classic Game shows like Concentration, Tic Tac Dough, and Joker's wild. I ALSO noticed that when Johnny Olson said what the prizes were, that they used The Price Is Right Music when Johnny was saying the prizes. Kind of COOL hearing Game show Music from a Certain Gameshow on a different game show too. ;)
That's because they all used the same company for the music, Score Productions.
Yep, Score Productions was used by Goodson-Todman repeatedly from the late sixties to the end of GT in the early nineties. A great music company with some very talented composers.
Score Productions is to MG-BT/MGP as the late Hal Hidey was to Barry & Enright Productions.
Best of the THEMES of Concentration.
I couldn't agree more. Mr. Narz was hosting the 1st version of "Now You See It" during this run. THAT theme was composed by Quincy Jones, so......
Music by Edd Kalehoff for Score Productions.
Atlanta: "11 Alive Newsroom" at 6, ABC News at 6:30, "Concentration" at 7 in the mid''70s. Like heaven!
In the 70s, WLKY-TV in Louisville, which at the time was an ABC affiliate, and is a CBS affiliate since 1990, carried many first-run syndicated game shows such Concentration, Dealer's Choice, Let's Make a Deal and The $128,000 Question, among others.
@@danalong1237 KHOU - CBS 11 carried it from January 1977 to September 1978 on Tuesdays.
I heard that this 1976 version of “Concentration” is on Buzzr right now. Go see it!
This is an episode from 1978, as per the Chevette.
Narz was very underrated unfortunately he left Beat the Clock and Concentration too soon. He could have lasted into the 80's if he wanted to .
He made one more game show appearance with brother Tom in a week of "Password Plus" (1982). Yeah, he could have definitely done the revivals of both his shows from the 70's.
So nice to see this show!
Why do i always love the opening slates? I don't know why?
And why am I screaming with excitement?
I can try to answer both those questions with a response of my own -- its because you're a die-hard game show fan + you don't usually get to see the opening slates unless you're at the taping as part of the audience
👧I'm more akin to the music and lights; not so much into the game itself.
Love TPIR prize music
I laughed when contestant Jack won the furniture, cause the TPIR prize cue played was "Splendido" (aka "Nothing But Furniture")
AHHHH It's Splendido!!!!!
But let's not forget 19:26, that was another Price is Right Cue.
ljthefro I remember the cue well
@@jnadle1 Starcrossed
I could use those bowling balls, I'm in a bowling league and always looking to add to my arsenal!
My mother Patricia was on Concentration in Jan of 1972. I am still searching for that one! :) My mother said my father was in the audience (and on the show). He was killed a few weeks after the show in a car crash. It would be incredible if I could see that episode :) and my mom would love to see it again after all these years :)
January 1972, the show was still on NBC daytime at 30 Rock in New York. That version unfortunately is mostly wiped out except for a handful of episodes sadly. This syndicated run of Concentration began in the fall of 1973.
Jon Grove Did your mom appear in other game shows?
SUCH a good episode! REALLY happy to have watched this!
The podiums in this game show kinda resemble old gas pumps.
Thanks for posting.
Wink, where DO you get these episodes? And would you perhaps have any episodes of the NBC version (in color and on videotape)? That would be the Holy Grail. Even if you don't, this is great because I never had a chance to see these episodes. THANKS!
Morbidly entertaining trainwreck episode! LOL
Seriously though, Jack Narz was so great. To me, he's second to Bill Cullen all-time.
Jack Narz could host anything
When the F was revealed in the 1st game and Linda didn't know it, you knew she was never going to figure it out.
Now that Buzzr can air CC, maybe they can air the Narz era of Concentration.
And they will, March 30th.
Another Jim Victory for game show fans!
Surprising to hear the 1972 tpir showcase cue at 19:26
Fun fact: with the exception of the theme and variations, ALL the music cues were from TPIR.
They recorded this at CBS studios, so I'm assuming the cart music was all there.
This series was recorded at Metromedia Square in Hollywood. Since it was a Goodson show, he just used music he already had, probably to save money.
On the 1978 episode posted "Starcrossed" is used.
Similar to "Classic Concentration", but with a 30-square mechanical board and a different bonus round format. I liked the show's use of "Price is Right" prize music cues.
In the splindedo cue, that guy really got screw-ew-ew-heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewed!
People seemed so much more respectful and courteous too each other back then.
The cars sure were ugly. lol
I now wonder, for the Double Play puzzles, if a harder puzzle (or two) would quickly be substituted, had the Chevette been the big prize. I say that, because I remember some rather "cruel" puzzles back during the early run of the Narz shows ("The Brothers Karamazov," anybody?)....
love
In the first game they got confused on the face symbol thinking it was changing but it was action (ing)! And Jack said that Linda racked up close to $6,000 in prizes between the 2 games and actually it was over $6,000!!!
Saved a bunch of money on the prize budget.
Interesting to note, Jack in his honesty, said 18:27 - we had saved a little time at the end so we could read all that and now we don't have to so I'm going to do a little song and dance, I guess". The timer guy intentionally ended the game early thinking that Linda could win, causing the plug read.
Interesting TPIR/Concentration music trades. :)
Doubly interesting given that had they *not* ended the game then, she could've continued her turn and possibly won all that loot. In fact, right before the play-off she had an expression as if the solution had just come to her. Should've invited her back.
They had to make Easy for the Double Play round. I believe if I was playing these puzzles I would lose too. Those were tough. The lady lost a lot, I feel bad. Thanks Wink.
Wow, do you think that they may have substituted the Double Play puzzles from something originally harder, because of what happened prior?
It is possible. Those puzzles were too hard.
They were frustrated we would never do that to Alex trebec lol 😆
Since the first game ended with no contestant winning, why didn't they edit that game out in post production? Regarding the quick start prizes, why not use them over again in the new game until someone wins? I heard that this version of Concentration was done on "shoestring" budget. Would it have been that expensive to re-tape the first segment until there was a winner?
I don't think it had anything to do with budget and everything to do with fairness. To replay the strikeout would have been unfair to all the other players on the show, whom only had 2 chances at the double play (regardless of what their puzzles were). This is different than a strikeout in Password, where you have to keep playing until you reach a goal and an edit would eliminate dead time on the way to a goal... here you were two and done, so whatever happened was the way it was going to be. If the rules were more like the later stages of the show in the 90s, when it was 2 out of 3, strikeouts would probably have been edited out and replayed. :)
They did not do too much editing in the 70s. That was what made game shows fun back then, because the were realistic. I love Jack Narz. He really want the contestants to win. I can tell. However he does not take any crap from no one when it is a wrong guess. That is why I love Jack Narz.

I would kinda be surprised if there were any complete show failures. Presumably, they tested the potential contestants on their ability to solve rebuses. I don't believe they would had completely incompetent players trotted out there (Those were the days when they cared about contestant quality, unlike today except for Jeopardy). I think this was just one of those very rare puzzles (Had the arrows been on the chin, it would have also made a legitimate phrase). :)
I agree Briguy
Yeah
Wow, those music cues for Double Play don't sound familiar at all... it's not like they turned up on any other G-T game shows? :)
i like this version better than the alex trebeck version
yes!!
They did not. Both players are talented. I loved the 3 call game, the bonus numbers, free looks and the WILD CARDS.
Not to spoil it but there is something VERY RARE that happens in game one.
+NEPatriot That could have gone either way if you think about it
I always wondered about that, too. Did they HAVE to let this stand? Why?
Don't like the fact that if a Wild Card matched a prize the natural match wasn't revealed, so that when it DID get revealed it wouldn't have matched anything. Bad rule that.
Consider that this version had 30 spaces instead of 25 in Trebek's version. Yes, those created orphan spaces but you had an option to pass to the other player too. So, that's the trade off.
Poor Linda ...she wiped the board with Jack but her solving skills sucked
Why does this game board make some grinding noise when a player chooses a number?
This Concentration was operated by a series of motors, so when a box was called, the motors spun the box.
It sounds cool because it's old school. Like a super fast drum roll-tap.
The original game had the same setup. The trilons sometimes got stuck, forcing Hugh Downs or Bob Clayton to flip them over themselves. Something charming about the old boards you can’t replicate with computers.
Price is Right used the same music
Narz sure looked old when he stopped dying his hair.
I’m not sure he did dye his hair. You could see it slowly going gray when he hosted Now You See It.
He was close to 60 at this point so yeah. Just because a person has grey does not mean they are old.
