I am surprised at how little has changed since I took this journey in 1971. My traveling companion/boyfriend and I hitchhiked from Anchorage to Haines and hopped the ferry. We slept on the deck (no tent) and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life and I am pretty well-travelled , though nothing like The Endless Adventure! I was 19 and fearless and daring. Now I am a fearless and daring Grandma. (the boyfriend is long gone!)
No tent?! You're the real adventurer! 😅 That's so neat that the trip hasn't changed much. It seems like most things these days have been completely overhauled or updated...it's nice that some things stay the same.
Did this trip in the early 80s. At that time they did not allow you to put up your tent on the deck - we did one night anyway and got away with it for that night but then they cracked down. I felt like I was a chocolate chip cookie baking under those heat lamps when we were in the solarium! Felt so trapped on that boat that I never took another cruise until last April 2023 when I went to the Galapagos! I booked a suite!!
I did a trip like this from Greece to Israel in 1997! I loved camping on the deck so much. We brought our camp stoves and cooked the best meals! It's exciting to know that things like that are still possible! 🎉
@5:45 "I don't think you're allowed to set up tents back here" while there's a giant blue sign that says, "No Tents Under Solarium" hanging in the background.
We have made the trip twice, first with our fifth wheel, the second without it, and rented one in Alaska. We couldn't get a tiny expensive stateroom due to short notice either time, so based on recommendations from people we met over time, we "camped" on deck chairs under the atrium which has heaters and is quieter than in a tent. One night we slept on the floor inside the auditorium due to the weather. The trip and the food was so great that I even considered getting a job with a month on and month off with good pay. The trip is mostly very smooth, like crossing a lake, however I had to lay down a bit during the hours of open water where the ferry rocked a lot. We had beer at our chair and some foreigners had too much wine in their cooler and got loud, so it was confiscated after complaints. The map is only a portion of the Marine Highway as it also goes to Sitka, a beautiful island, and out to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Chain. We chose to get off at Haines and drove thru Yukon to Fairbanks. If in the daytime, get off at Ketchikan and take a bus tour of the incredibly rich Alaska Native culture. Beautiful trip.
I always preferred sleeping on the floor in the observation lounge. Still hard as a rock, but a lot less wind. If I had to be outside, I'd want one of the loungers under the heat lamp in the solarium. Imaging being on that boat with 250 high school kids! We did that for Southeast Music Festival and the Regional Basketball tournament.
😳 We cannot imagine that...the high schoolers would have replaced every person on that ship! Crazy! And we agree - loungers and/or indoors is the way to go for this journey 😁
Whilst I fully understand the “no sleeping in your RV” rule for safety reasons, I can’t believe that some people didn’t. If you have access every 6 hours, then catching some sleep must be possible, and if anyone hears movement inside would they not just assume it was a pet? Great video as always, but it would be good to compare and contrast your experience on the return journey with a state room in place of the tent (if budget and availability allows).
Being on the car deck without the crew present is a coast guard violation, not just a ferry rule. You can get in very big trouble. (The crew go down for the car deck calls)
I’m surprised you guy didn’t check out Downie Live’s video of his Alaska Marine Ferry trip with 2 companions. They stayed in a stateroom and went from Bellingham all the way to Whittier. Whittier has a special place in my heart because on my first day in the state in 1981 I took my 5 yr old son on the train from Anchorage to Whittier. I was a little apprehensive since I was a young Mother traveling alone with her son! The hotel staff told me to visit the local Army/Navy Surplus store, and that was excellent advice! It was one of the most rewarding adventures I ever too!🥰
It's amazing that the ferry is a 1970's vintage, as the ones we use between our main islands are only from the late 1990's, yet are already considered past their prime and will be replaced in about two years with brand new ones. They are also car and passenger ferries, but quite a bit bigger.
Oh my gosh the NZ ferries are like a luxury cruise compared to our Alaska ferries! But, it is because your ferries are privately owned and make a profit. Ours are State owned and lose money. But they are cheaper. I was in NZ for 6 months in 2016 and LOVED it! ❤😊
Apart from the lack of sleep.. what an amazing way to start your Alaska trip.. by ship.. stunning coastal scenery and wildlife. Beautiful weather to top it. Can't wait for the next vlogs.
This is an excellent adventure guys, a true adventure is never too easy or comfortable. Your channel is going from strength to strength and I’m loving it. Hope you’re enjoying it and btw hope your mum Eric is doing well. Have fun, stay safe and enjoy every minute. Much love, support and gratitude from Britain 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
Glad you're enjoying all the shenanigans we've been up to lately. The east coast has definitely had some great adventures for us. And luckily Eric's mom's hanging in there - she has good and bad days, of course, but we're so thankful for all the extra time we're getting ❤️
I found your channel a while ago and slowly working my way through the videos. Living in the UK i love watching all the adventures RV folks get up is one of my favourite things to do and a dream of mine to travel all around America and Canada one day! Just need a companion as don’t fancy doing it all solo! One day maybe but in the meantime i’ll enjoy watching along! ❤
You guys are such troopers. Always entertaining and interesting going along on these adventures with you ^_^ Hope you got some good sleep after all this! x
FYI on the lounge chairs in the solarium: they are not comfortable! Unless you have like a backpacking little blow up pad. Then they're great. But in my opinion, the best way to sleep is in a tent cot on deck. Mine has a steel tube frame, so way too heavy to blow away. Footprint is no bigger than a cot, so don't feel bad taking up a ton of space for 1 person. And, because the tent fastens to steel bars instead of just tent poles, it is very secure in the wind. It does still make some noise, so if you're very delicate sleepers like 😉, you may not like it! I just love the privacy without having to pay for a cabin. The only time I would prefer a stateroom is if I'm sick and I just really feel a need for my own personal bathroom 2 feet away from my bed. But that's just my personal opinions as someone who has been riding the ferry for about 45 years....and, I do have a house on an island! Come visit! And, I have a very cute beagle you can play with! 😅
Camped out for 3 days in Heathrow airport in 1980 ! During the D C 10 groundings ! Was great got an extra 3 days in England to do anything i wanted, went to a movie( moonraker)in piccadilly circus and walked all the things i missed on our tour !😊
Wow what a unique adventure! I love Allison with the whale beanie on! I can't imagine how sleep deprived you must have been upon arrival at Hanes. Would love to do this someday...with a stateroom!
That background you see most likely isn't Alaska if that was your first night...that is the coastline of BC...which will be a lot of your trip up there.
Thank you so much for suffering through all that so we can be informed! We needed info about the various ways to see Alaska and this was very helpful!!
Enjoy the video. I slept in the lawn chair it was by far the best I had the whole panorama on my trip and the heat lamps from the solarium kept me comfortable at night wonderful trip
So exciting! I love the video shots you got of the wildlife and just the beauty of the islands on either side of you. Thanks for the info on doing this trip. I had no idea this was available. I can't wait to see more! Thanks for bringing us along! Jane in SC, stay safe!❤🙏
Glad we could take you on a mini Alaskan cruise with us! It was so fun seeing all the whales and dolphins splashing around. And the views were incredible from start to finish. 😍 Definitely looking forward to sharing all the upcoming adventures!
I want this experience! So fun! But my goodness - I didn't comment this on the last video, but the loading system they have for cars? That's fascinatingly inefficient! Coming from someone who's grown up in a town with car ferries - that was a sight! The ships I'm used to have a movable ramp - ramp down -> cars go on. ramp up -> cars park under. With cars standing on the ramp as it moves up into place - no space lost. So the one car lift was super fascinating! I wanna do it!
I don’t remember ever seeing tents on the decks of ferry’s. Ours are short runs but in all the travel shows I missed that. I do know about tenting in unrelenting wind that would flatten the tent with some gusts. Nightmare with out sleeping. Thanks for fun adventure and heads up. Sweet dreams in your cozy home. Ahoyoy
Thanks for sharing; noise cancelling headphones seem to be a must have for tent camping on the ferry! It’s also *so* wild that pets can sleep in the vehicles onboard but people cannot! And where do they pee?!
On the floor, then you have to clean it right up. But when they actually stop you can take them off the ferry for a little bit. It’s actually a fun little adventure.
Ahh! This back lots of fond memories. Took the journey 20 years ago when I worked in Skagway for the summer. I was one of the ones sleeping on lounge chairs and I must say it was such a fun experience. If you want to do something epic, hike the Chilkoot trail on your back south. Might be too late in the season though. And go to Dawson Coty in the Yukon if you can.
Love watching your adventures and misadventures . Eva ZuBeck has video of her ferry tent camping trip to Dutch Harbor. It might be interesting to compare notes.
You guys being excited about the ferry is adorable. :) Coming from the UK, I've been on ferries multiple times since childhood to get to mainland Europe. Plus the time I took a ferry across the Baltic from Germany to Finland when I helped a firend move. So they're quite 'ordinary' for me. Though camping on deck is definitely not done here, and your views are much more epic than any I've ever seen!
Hi Eric and Allison What's going on Adventures That was one wild ride I think its better t o drive your self their and back lol just me But I get it to have the once in a life time experience wow so Proud of y'all
I feel like you not showing the food means it is really bad 😂 also i feel like they should try to retrofit capsules all over the ship and make a capsule hotel vibe as an alternative to just tent/ chair sleeping
Great episode. The scenery reminds me a little of exploring the islands off Stockholm. Your camping spot was similar to sleeping on a hill top or ridge line, lively but fine. I think the comfort of Clementine and The Black Series is making you soft! Good luck on your drive.
Hey guys, I’ve been rewatching your old vlogs, and learned you used to have two cats, Emma and Pearl. I was just curious what happened to them, I don’t think I’ve seen y’all mention them since the video I last saw them in (WE DRUGGED THEM!)
I have never seen two people complain so much on an adventure trip especially one as beautiful as the inside passage of Alaska. I raised my two boys in Juneau and set up our tent on many trips all over Southeast Alaska in all types of weather including snow. I never heard complaints from any of the campers or lounge chair travelers complain. It is a unique experience and should be enjoyed not complained about. I doubt if you two know what true adventure means.
would a bivouac tent for each person be more ideal for camping on a ship? if you're traveling by yourself or with at least one companion? to save space and weight for carry on gear and items.
Just think Allison - if you lived in one of those so beautiful and quaint houses on one of those islands - - - You'd STILL be hearing those - BLARINGINGLY LOUD - ships horns!! OUCH!!BLARINGINGLY LOUD-

I’m a 70 yr old Grandma and feel ya!
I bet the boyfriend still thinks about you.
I too have a lot of great memories from hitching .. ✌️💗

I bet that was an incredible journey! 😍 I wish we'd been able to cook meals...that would have definitely made it more delicious (and cheaper)!
@5:45 "I don't think you're allowed to set up tents back here" while there's a giant blue sign that says, "No Tents Under Solarium" hanging in the background.
I'm from Kodiak Alaska. The Tustumena Ferry is the ferry I grew up taking back and forth from Anchorage to Kodiak. Enjoy Alaska!
Homer here--Trusty Tusty.
that 'dirty" book - the milepost is one of the musts for drive through and around alaska - shows all the road, gas stations, groceries....etc
We have made the trip twice, first with our fifth wheel, the second without it, and rented one in Alaska. 7:30 why is the bar/lounge the nicest looking part of the boat? 🤣🤣🤣
I would be so paranoid that a giant gust of wind would sweep the tent (and its occupants) overboard! I wouldn't get a wink of sleep!
Ya'll have the BEST MUSIC SELECTION. Perfectly matched to you vids!!!😍😍
Whoa that is so awesome!! Alaska feels like a whole other planet. It is sooo beautiful!
Let the fun begin! And greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Gorgeous ferry ride, wow. Also, that orca toque is EPIC!

I think this was a brilliant and unique idea to a travel like this. Thank you!
I'm having a blast on this trip!!!! And I'm thinking its just getting started!! Tough roads ahead!!
This is such an interesting adventure! And remember, Eric, nobody puts Allison in the corner! 🤣🤣🙂

That’s so great you guys! Welcome to our home state when we’re back in the USA!🇺🇸
Great video. You guys are so chill. I would have been crying by night two! Well done.
The camera work and editing y'all put into your videos is top notch.
It looks like the State Room is the best.... and only way to go. If you want to actually get some sleep 😴 I bet Clementine never felt so good 🛏
I absolutely loved this! Ya’ll are true adventurers! So good!

Mucho Love From Your Friend In Michigan Tam 💜💕
I'm glad you made it safely. See you next time ⏲️ adventurers.
Congratulations you are alaskans now! 👍🏻❤🇺🇸🙏🏻
Apart from the lack of sleep.. what an amazing way to start your Alaska trip.. by ship.. stunning coastal scenery and wildlife. Beautiful weather to top it. Can't wait for the next vlogs.
The views were amazing from start to finish! And with the days still being longer up here, we were able to enjoy them even more 😍

I found it hilarious that you put the Milepost back on the shelf, not realizing that it was the valuable book you can have for exploring Alaska.
You guys are such troopers. Always entertaining and interesting going along on these adventures with you ^_^ Hope you got some good sleep after all this! x
Oh ya, we didn't turn our alarms on for two mornings after this! 😴
I am not sure why I like these videos….. but here I am.

Eric reminds me of Jim Carey. And the reason I say that, he’s naturally funny. Allison is a pretty red head that’s funny also.
It's really beautiful can't wait to see your next adventure!! Safe travels 🙏 💕
You guys are awesome, thank you fir bringing us on your adventures. Stay safe
Oh my goodness - this looks INCREDIBLE! Thanks so much for sharing this - added to my bucket list!
Lol if you guys ever have kids you both are already prepared with the dad jokes 😂
what an amazing adventure!

Yes! You didn’t mention Canada, and you were sailing up the Inside Passage.
We are just as beautiful as Alaska!🇨🇦
Great episode guys. Loved the content and how you made me, as the viewer, able to experience the details. Two thumbs up.
The people in the lounge chairs are probably saying don’t do lawnchair‘s do tent, tent is the way to go.😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much for suffering through all that so we can be informed!
We needed info about the various ways to see Alaska and this was very helpful!!
Glad our suffering could help you out! 🤣We have a lot more fun adventures coming from AK (including more fun modes of transportation) so stay tuned!
Great review of the Alaskan ferry ! Looking forward towards your Alaska adventures !
I remember sleeping on deck heading to boy scout camp. The solariums were heated from above.
Enjoy the video. I slept in the lawn chair it was by far the best I had the whole panorama on my trip and the heat lamps from the solarium kept me comfortable at night wonderful trip

Love the whale hat. I'm excited to watch your Alaska adventure.👍😊🇮🇪🇺🇸
Beautiful! I love the name Clementine for your old RV. I’ve been to 39 states and D.C.
loving this adventure already!
I love watching your Alaskan adventure...thanks for sharing!
It should be a option to stay in ur vehicle. Has to be safer than wind blowing ur tent
What's to keep the tents from just blowing over the edge? It seems pretty dangerous.
gaffer tape.
I want this experience! So fun!
But my goodness - I didn't comment this on the last video, but the loading system they have for cars? That's fascinatingly inefficient! Thank you both for the video 👍🏻
Did the inside passage last summer with NatGeo and it was amazing, really loved Haines!
So many dogs I love it. The camping on the deck may not have been the most comfortable experience but it's definitely one you guys will remember!
That is so true!
Ahh! This back lots of fond memories. Took the journey 20 years ago when I worked in Skagway for the summer. So basically kind of like San Francisco... people sleeping wherever they want.😂
Homeless people are a bit different.
Yeah the entire city and area are homeless.....I sense you are definitely a Magat
Skagway is actually the most northern port in southeast Alaska that has a road to Anchorage
The views are totally worth sleeping on the back of the boat! But I’d still be absolutely terrified 😂😂 I can’t wait to get to your Alaska videos ❤
You guys being excited about the ferry is adorable. :) Coming from the UK, I've been on ferries multiple times since childhood to get to mainland Europe. As an Australian, I still find them exciting
Hi Eric and Allison What's going on Adventures That was one wild ride I think its better t o drive your self their and back lol just me But I get it to have the once in a life time experience wow so Proud of y'all
Good night. Sleep deprived sucks . Enjoy a great night 🌙
Beautiful and informative vlog !! Thanks for sharing your experiences ❤❤ from India
Awesome trip on the Ferry,
Never knew tenting was OK.
Thanks
3 months ago,we took a ship just like that from Portsmouth to Caen, much fun...
Looking forward to this video. Allison you look very fit in your black muscle shirt. You go girl! 👍🏻❤🇺🇸🌹
another awesome video.
Always a great video👍😊💚
Very fun, informative video; thanks. We're heading from Skagway to Bellingham in August. Glad I booked a stateroom.
Now that’s an adventure!
thanks for sharing that looks so cool maybe i can convince my wife to go just stellar to watch
Love the tape for the tent. Lol. Surprised you didn’t have Gaff tape 😜 Enjoying your weekly adventures. Helped inspire me to start my journey too. 😁
I feel like you not showing the food means it is really bad 😂 also i feel like they should try to retrofit capsules all over the ship and make a capsule hotel vibe as an alternative to just tent/ chair sleeping
Great video!
Great vid. I think I’ll stick to the comfort of a cruise ship but I loved seeing your experience 😁
Great episode. The scenery reminds me a little of exploring the islands off Stockholm. Your camping spot was similar to sleeping on a hill top or ridge line, lively but fine. I think the comfort of Clementine and The Black Series is making you soft! Good luck on your drive.
Years ago we were traveling from Europe to Scandinavia by train, and they put THE ENTIRE TRAIN on a ferry ship to cross over!!!
Hey guys, I’ve been rewatching your old vlogs, and learned you used to have two cats, Emma and Pearl. I was just curious what happened to them, I don’t think I’ve seen y’all mention them since the video I last saw them in (WE DRUGGED THEM!)
I was waiting so much to see what you guys have been eating on the ship!😢❤
Exciting times a head. 🙏you got a Good nights sleep after that 3 day of hardly any .
Looking forward to your next video Safe Travels 🥰🥰
Always great to watch any of your videos and congrats on 100,000,000 views

HORRAY ,,Love your new adventure SOOooo COOL
Great journey on the ferry thanks....looks like the tent has been put away for a while 😂
If you travel to the Matanuska Valley and visit Palmer you will see the place where I grew up. Enjoy our beautiful state. Wish I was there.
would a bivouac tent for each person be more ideal for camping on a ship? if you're traveling by yourself or with at least one companion? to save space and weight for carry on gear and items.

The Endless cruse to Alaska. Just think, you get to return too. Bet you book a room next time. Maybe reserve it now?
