I love that the viola sounds like an accordion in the first few seconds! Magical.
Ridout's viola has a very shrill sound on the A string (to my ear anyway, and I'm both a violist and luthier who only makes violas) - you can hear it a tad at 10:45, but even more so at 11:02! I wish the viola was a little more even across all the strings.
The lower strings on his viola are gorgeous, a classic woody and defined sound with great depth going into an almost tenor-like voice. It's just that A string that's overbearing for me.
A great rendition of the piece though! One of my favourites. Very passionate and more musical than a lot of other versions I've heard.
