So... Recently ordered and received the base game. Am hoping to run it tomorrow with the weekly BG group. It seems the marshalls are kinda untouchable by the outlaws, and wanted to implement a kinda house rule.. It goes like this: An outlaw can rob a marshal. If the outlaw wins, it's the same as any other "rob" move, and the attacked marshal loses a LP (Kinda he's an embarrassment to the law or whatnot). However, if the outlaw loses, then he's auto-arrested. It's a kinda thing that "could've" happened back in the day. The other is the same with 2 marshalls. A marshal can become an outlaw by doing an outlaw move (The rules don't seem to only specify that he becomes wanted if he's successful, however attempted robbery is still a naughty move). So, if 2 marshalls are in the same space, and the active player decides, "Ok "buckwheat (insert cowboy nick here), I'm done being a goody-two-shoes". The active marshal can attempt to rob the other marshal. Same as any robbery. If AP is successful, he loses all marshal points, and gets to space 1 on the "Wanted" track. If he loses, the inactive marshal player auto-arrests the naughty marshal, who then loses all his marshal points, goes to jail, and the sheriff goes back to the jail as per game rules. Wonder if that'd work, and then it'd mean also that the marshalls wouldn't be as untouchable. Sure, the attacking active player would have to high-tail it outta there if he was successful and robbed the inactive marshal player, because he'd be sure to try and arrest the (possibly) newly-made outlaw to the ends of the earth (map)... Asking those who've played this, because it might work... or break the game... Any advice would be appreciated. Great vid, and I also watched your nemesis one ages ago, which prompted me to buy it, and we've run it in our group twice... Brutal game that.. Brilliant.. Thanks for the vids. Keep em coming!
Interesting and honest review and i agree with a lot of your criticism.... On the other hand I think Western Legends is a game you should play with 4 or 5 players who prefer a lot of Interaction and dig this whole robbing other persons back and forth mechanism. Then it becomes a gem and to be honest right now it is my favorite beer & pretzel game. Merchants & Maurauders is significantly longer and more complex, whereas Western Legends is more a "Kennerspiel". Funny that you mention Galaxy Trucker, because we played that game a couple of days later with the same group and they liked Western Legends more, because our Flight Phase in Galaxy Trucker was incredibly boring ^^. I enyoy both games and would recommend them anytime.
Hey Sam, I assume you're taking about the "Ante Up" expansion. I took a brief look at the Kickstarter page and the rules. Nothing jumped out at me as fixing the issues I had (although I think I remember they had done something to address the strength of the "gold strategy"). Thanks for watching! - Mike
Totally agree with your comments, it`s a fun game, but has huge flaws...when I bought this game I hoped that it could be the next gen Bang! for my group, we played the card and the dice game back in the days all the time, it was really fun and I was hoping Western Legends will bring back those cool saturday night Bang! vibes, but saddly it couldn`t deliver...it was fun, but quite often we just wanted to play Bang! again instead of this :( It`s a cool concept that it`s a sandbox choose your own path game, but because of this it can be really unbalanced, players needs to adopt to each other and sometimes that`s not fun, because you can feel you are forced in situations what is a MUST for you...all in all, it`s a fun game, but not worth the price.
This is the video that convinced me to sell Western Legends a second time. I enjoy westerns, but this game felt so dry and anaemic. I then tried salvage it by devising a workable solo system when I'm gaming alone ... I got solo functioning, but it remained equally as flat. I'd have to rebuild the engine rrom the ground up, and it's not worth it. Even though Shadows of Brimstone has a pulpy and lightweight western backbone, it's still more ... fun. Fun is what Western Legends lacks. It's only interesting if I found walking through American deserts fun.
Plot Twist: you’ve been playing it all wrong all along.... lol Everything you guys mentioned I agree with even though I haven’t played the game. It’s a bit of a concern when thinking about their other games and they plan on releasing 3 more kickstarters to kick of this new year. I backed the game then backed out. Glad I made the wise decision. Open world as it’s been stated by many, it’s a hard theme to pull off but I just don’t think an open world theme is the best to board gaming without putting a limitation on the open world aspect but then it’s no longer open world in a way. It’s kind of sad as this game was supposed to really kick things off for them as one of their major releases.

Interesting review. Note that you can only initiate a heist once per turn. (so no, you can't rob the bank 3 times in a turn)
I realy enjoy watching your series and I wander why you actualy have so little views. This is quite interesting.
Does the expansion do anything to solve the issues brought up with this game?
